“That makes sense.” Alice had something similar. You did always excel at minor mendings. It hadn’t been much comfort at the time. Quentin hadn’t thought there was much left of his ego to bruise, but being handed a discipline so thoroughly unimpressive had left a mark. But Eliot is looking at him now, eyes soft and shining, like Quentin just handed him something precious. “You’re always trying to fix things.”

There was nothing very special about the flowers, not appearance-wise anyways. They were beautiful certainly. Dark pink flowers that weren’t quite poppies. Spikes of blue that could be mistaken for lavender or bluebells from a distance. At a glance, they wouldn’t seem worth all the trouble Quentin had gone through to get them. They certainly didn’t seem worth all the trouble it was taking to keep the damn things alive.

He certainly wasn’t going to air out his series of failed relationships – stemming from his abandonment issues and the fact it took him nineteen years to realize he couldn’t connect with any of his dates because he was going after the completely wrong gender – in front of a complete stranger and a group of children. He definitely didn’t want to be discussing this in front of Eddie. He’d put too much effort into hiding the crush that had steadily developed over the summer before it could ruin their friendship. But any hope of avoiding that had clearly died the moment Steve stepped through Madame Loretta’s gaudy curtain beads.
