The stories I'm proudest of, I guess. Still so new to writing fiction, I'm surprised if I like any of it, but these are the stories I like the best, at the moment. This is a place to share those stories with a little additional commentary on why they're faves.

I've been a fan of fanvids since the 1990s and enjoying watching and sharing them. More recently I started putting together themed playlists and sometimes sharing them with others as vid shows. Most of them aren't on here yet, but the ones I manage to post will be in this series.

An all-time favorite series that I reread every so often when I want to laugh.

The premise sounds ridiculous—Steve and Sam move to a neighborhood during their search for Bucky Barnes and some math teacher who dresses like Ned Flanders lives next door to them (and is secretly Bucky).

The rare story (and sequels) that makes me laugh out loud no matter how often I reread it, but it's also a really sweet story too. Bucky and Steve are great in this, but so are Sam and Nat and others.

If after all that Steve brought up his insane conviction that their math teacher neighbor was Bucky, Sam would have him committed, probably. At the very least there’d be an embarrassing Avengers intervention, and Steve might even deserve it. It was crazy to think they’d moved in next to Bucky, who was inexplicably undercover as a math teacher. But was it any crazier than what had already happened? When the Winter Soldier’s mask had come off in DC, revealing Bucky’s beloved face, Steve’s world had stopped. Old suspicions and fears had rearranged themselves to present a new reality, one in which Bucky had survived, albeit at a horrible cost. Plus, there were aliens and gods and vast government conspiracies. Compared to all that, moving in next to a bafflingly mustachioed and undercover Bucky was downright pedestrian.

Jack Murphy was probably just a guy who bore a passing resemblance to Bucky, a resemblance that Steve’s desperate hope seized on like a drowning man grasping for a life vest. But if he wasn’t—well, Steve would do a little investigating, see what he could find out.

    Work/Series Summary:

Post-CATWS AU where Bucky goes undercover as a math teacher while he's on the run.

    Series Notes:

    For ease of reference:

"they're gonna send us to prison for jerks" is the first and main fic.

"we miss being ruffians" is where I stuck a lot of time-stamps to the series, which got much longer than intended! Below is a short breakdown of each chapter/fic within the "we miss being ruffians", with ratings noted if they're above T:

"when I figure out where I'm going": a Marvel Trumps Hate fill. Bucky takes his students and Steve on a field trip to the Stark Expo.

“Hey Steve, this is Jack Murphy, our other neighbor. Jack, this is Steve.” Steve looked at Sam a little wildly, expecting to see—he didn’t even know, but some reaction other than Sam’s usual easy friendliness. And there was something there, but it was just the twitch of Sam’s mouth that said he found something hilarious and he was trying not to show it. Was this Sam’s idea of a joke, or a prank? Because this guy—behind the glasses and mustache, Steve could have sworn—well, he looked like Bucky.

Assorted mostly self-contained snippets post-they're gonna send us to prison for jerks, aka an excuse to write whatever self-indulgent nonsense I feel like about undercover as a (formerly mustached) math teacher Bucky Barnes.

“Steve, it’s an emergency,” said Bucky the moment Steve picked up.

“What? Is HYDRA there? Are you in danger? How many hostiles are there? I’ll be there in four minutes, just hang tight—”

“Not that kind of emergency! Tim broke half of his limbs, so I’m out a chaperone for the Stark Expo trip, and none of the other parents or Liesel can come either. If I can’t find someone, the whole trip is gonna get canceled!”

Steve sighed explosively and a dull clunking sound came over the phone line, the telltale sound of the shield dropping to the floor. “Oh my god, you can’t just say it’s an emergency like that—“

When Bucky's mathletes win a spot at the Stark Industries Mathematics and Technology Challenge for Youths, it's up to Bucky to get them to the Stark Expo. That means fundraising, a road trip with six teenagers, coaching them through the competition, and also saving them from Doombots without blowing his and Steve's covers.

Fine Gordon/Wayne story told from Gordon's POV.

Batman swoops in and takes Gordon away from his home (where he's now living alone) just as a bunch of mob thugs show up. The chase is on with Batman on his bike and Gordon on the back of it in his pajamas.

I've seen plenty of stories where for one reason or another Gordon ends up staying with Bruce Wayne at his fancy condo, but I like how the reveal of Batman's identity is handled early in this story (as they flee the thugs). Alfred is awesome, as ever. Lots of things work well, I like how Gordon takes a great many things in stride (as he would IMHO) including when folks start making assumptions about his relationship with Bruce Wayne.

We have to go,” Batman murmured in his harsh voice. “Now.”

Gordon stood up and gazed helplessly around at the shadowy gloom. “Just let me get dressed.”

    “No time.”

“I can’t go gallivanting about Gotham in my pajamas,” he protested in an indignant whisper.

    “Sure you can.”

Suddenly he was aware of the dark shape looming over his shoulder, and oddly, the faint scent of cologne. He’d never really thought before about the fact that there was a man beneath the suit. “Come, now,” Batman whispered urgently, and Gordon heard the warped floorboard outside the bedroom door creak. Gordon’s heart hammered. They’d been talking about getting the floorboards fixed for years, never did manage to find the money. There was always something more important to budget for. Jimmy’s piano lessons. Babs was going to need braces soon.

    Bookmarker's Notes

One of my favorite post-Dark Knight Rises stories (so far). Wherein Bruce shows up three months later on Jim's couch and tells Jim about his new alias and Jim takes Bruce away to a cabin. I love the domesticity of it, seeing these two men learn to be around each other and learn to (possibly) be retired and maybe learn to be away from Gotham. Together.

He wandered into the bedroom and threw some clothes into a duffel bag, emerging to find Bruce still lying on his couch.

"Where are you going?" Bruce said.

"'Evan Macintosh' and I are going up north. I've got a little lake camp there, used to be my grandparents'." He had promised Barbara years ago he'd spend more time there with the family. He'd been there once in the last decade. He nudged the man on his couch with his duffel bag. "You're welcome to come along too, though."

After a moment Bruce sat up. He nodded and stood--favoring one leg, Jim noticed, and with the deliberate movements of a man long-used to pain.

Jim tossed the car keys at him. "It's about a seven hour drive. You want to take the first leg?"

Bruce looked down at the car keys, then lobbed them back. "Evan Macintosh hates city driving," he said.

"Yeah, well, Bruce Wayne wasn't any great shakes either," Jim said as he pulled open the front door and headed down the steps. "Running red lights, crashing Lamborghinis."

"You remember." Bruce's voice was pleased; Jim turned around to look at him but his face was in shadow and Jim couldn't see his expression.

"He wasn't the most forgettable person."

Truly a classic Superbat fic. Wherein Batman thinks Clark Kent has a close relationship with Superman and offers an interview with Batman to Clark in exchange for information on Superman. This has both Clark and Bruce POVs (though more from Clark). They're fascinated by each other. I love the reveal in this so much, but also the way Bruce and Clark can't resist actually talking to each other.

Kent's eyebrows went up. "Some people would say that so-called torture is necessary to keep the streets safe."

"Well, I'm not one of them," Batman retorted. "Torture generally yields poor intel. Pragmatics aside, I find it distasteful. I'm not saying I'm gentle with criminals, and I'm sure Superman would disapprove of my techniques at times, but cold-blooded torture is monstrous." He stopped the flow of angry words abruptly and glared at Kent. "We're here to talk about Superman," he growled. The man had a gift for diversion.

Kent's smile was offensively cherubic. "But you're so much more interesting," he said.

"More interesting that a flying super-strong alien who shoots lasers out of his eyes? I sincerely doubt that."

"You'd be surprised," Kent muttered, looking down at his notebook, and Bruce made a mental note: friction between the two?

    Bookmarker's Notes

An all-time favorite wherein Clark Kent visits Gotham after the events of The Dark Knight because he doesn't think Batman did what they say he did. Alfred is put in an awkward position when he learns Clark Kent is Superman and swears to not reveal Clark's secret to anyone. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne is blocking the stories Clark wants to tell to try to prove Batman's innocence.

I love how this all plays out so much, not sure how many times I've read this one.

"And I tell you, Mr. Kent, that you will never understand him until you trust him." Alfred's face was both concerned and stern. "You are going to have to make a leap of faith. Only then will the two of you--" He broke off and walked for a few steps, his gaze distant. "I believe you two could...be something for each other that no one else can," he said eventually.

Clark snorted, which made Alfred look at him reprovingly. "I don't think he needs a Kansas farm boy for a friend. Or an alien superhero, for that matter."

Alfred's feet grated on the gravel as he stopped suddenly, turning to glare at Clark. "Begging your pardon, sir, you know nothing at all about what Bruce Wayne needs. And until you can bring yourself to trust him, Mr. Kent, despite all your powers and abilities you will be lost in the darkness, unable to be what he needs."
