whumptober 2026 day 18: suicide attempt
The box is nondescript, identical to all the other storage boxes except for the blunt ‘Life-Ending Measures’ label printed across the top. Inside are three smaller boxes, each with names engraved into the metal.
ИЛЮХИНА — Ilyukhina.
姚 — Yáo.
The last one catches Grace off-guard. He’s expecting it to belong to DuBois, but DuBois’ chosen method had been nitrogen poisoning, and all the nitrogen had been stored with the rest of the chemical resources in the lab. Grace’s access to it had been the only reason he was able to wipe out both Taumoeba leaks in time.
DuBois wouldn’t have needed anything else; no final lethal dose like Ilyukhina or bullets like Yáo.
But there are three boxes here. And on the third, etched in neat letters, is Grace.

Summary
Before Rocky is ready, Grace points the cylinder at him. “How do you say Grace in your language?” it asks.
Well, you don’t. You don’t say Grace in any language on Erid. Eridian language simply does not have the sounds to say Grace. Without knowing what Grace represents in this alien language other than a squishy sack of liquid and organs, Rocky cannot say Grace in Eridian, just like Grace cannot say Rocky’s Eridian name and just gave him a different one. Did Grace want him to come up with a name for it? Just like that?
That's a lot of pressure. Too much pressure! Rocky can't help but to blurt the first thing that comes to mind.

Grace broke down, crying tears of joy. He was going to live. They were going to save the planets, and if his soulmate survived whatever stupid stunts they were pulling, they would live too. Because Earth would be fine, and Grace would get to go home and meet them.
Whatever happened to Mark’s soulmate was something amazing. He cradled the feeling close, tried to sear it into his memory and let it warm him. His existence on Mars boiled town to being cold and lonely; and this feeling coming from his soulmate filled every broken and freezing crevice inside of him. He needed to survive. He needed to go home and find them. They were waiting. They wanted him just as keenly. He didn’t know how, but he knew it.
