Summary
Varian has been a man of science for as long as he can remember. Even after everything magical that’s happened to him in the past 5 or so years, he’s held strong to his hypothesis. Magic is just what science hasn’t explained yet. An unexamined variable that needs to be tested and dissected.
Similarly to magic, love is another unexplainable variable, but one everyone around him seems to be… permanently fixated on. Don’t get him wrong, Varian does love his father; he loves his totally-not-basically siblings Rapunzel and Eugene, and he most certainly loves alchemy. But in terms of romance? It hardly makes any sense. No matter how many times he tries to understand what it means to love somebody, romance is just… illogical.
But Varian is quite fine with his feelings about romance. Still, when a needlessly petty blond catches his attention on his quest to solve the mystery of his mother and discover himself, he’s forced to reconsider his feelings about both romance and magic, which are, in this case, one and the same.
OR: Varian and the Seven Kingdoms, except he has Hanahaki disease (a.k.a “Hearts Blume”), and he really doesn’t want to come to terms with what this might mean for him.
