Zuko, ruling Lord of the Fire Nation, has spent the last thirteen years attempting to remedy a hundred years’ worth of atrocities. But nearing thirty without a Fire Lady or an Heir Apparent has left Zuko politically vulnerable.
Toph, future Countess of Beifong, has spent the last thirteen years trying to build a legacy of her own. After her breakup with Satoru, she’s been rejecting persistent marriage offers while running her academy and struggling to establish a metalbending security force. But turning twenty-five without a husband or political backing has left Toph socially vulnerable.
A fake courtship should solve all their problems. It will give Zuko a break from court pressure, a chance to organically find a Fire Lady through a love match, and deter opposing factions. It will give Toph a break from familial pressure, a powerful tool to advance her academic and career goals, and deter suitors. Everything will be practical, temporary, and completely false.
However, neither Toph nor Zuko have ever been any good at doing what they’re supposed to.
