His mouth was dry, tasting of sand as he dragged his exhausted and bruised body on heavy steps across the parched ground beneath the sun beating mercilessly down on his sweat-drenched back, with no idea where his shuffling steps were taking him - deeper into the barren hostile wasteland of the enemy or towards a life-saving oasis, he couldn’t tell.
All he knew was that if he stopped moving and sat down to rest, like his aching and weary body demanded, he would not get up again and let the rolling desert wind bury him in the scorching sand.
His memories were gone but he had to keep moving.
In the distance, where the hot air flickered at the foothill of a ragged mountain ridge rising into the cloudless blue sky, he spotted a blurred shape heading towards his position. At first Avad thought it to be a mirage fooling his delirious mind and filling him with false hope, but the hallucination had been following him for a while like a shadow he couldn’t shake, keeping its distance but watching him from a safe distance, like a curious spectator to his inevitable demise.

There was no way out. No one who had descended down these stairs had ever seen daylight again, for however desolate the ancient cavernous structure deep under the earth may seem at first glance… it was not.

“Uh,” he says, looking up from his screen and feeling his ears go hot, realizing for the first time that this habit of his hasn’t actually come up before until this exact moment.
“What?” Rozanov asks, sounding more amused than anything else. “You are one of the people who does Instagram for food now?”
“No,” Shane says, stalling between answering and finishing his Snap so he can send it to Melissa, “one sec.” He finishes typing out 'Tuna melt. Chips. Pickles. It smells really good. Swiss cheese, I think.' before he looks back to Rozanov, putting his phone facedown on the coffee table. “Just sending it to someone on the staff. She likes knowing what I’m eating.”
He doesn’t know if Melissa likes knowing what he’s eating, per se, but she also seems pleased when he talks about enjoying food for things beyond how many grams of protein it has in it.
“Ah,” Rozanov says, in a tone Shane can’t quite read. “You always send her your food then, this girl?”
(shane has a habit of sending his team's dietitian his meals for approval) (the problem with this habit? he forgets to tell ilya exactly what it is that melissa does) (how the tuna meltdown is AVERTED through the power of miscommunication)

“This hot tub has not been well maintained,” Rozanov complained as they stood on the deck, staring at the built-in hot tub, big enough to fit 8 people.
“So, you can replace it,” Shane replied patiently.
“I will be too busy to replace the hot tub. Then I will have a long day, and I will decide to have a soak in my rancid hot tub, and then I will catch diphtheria and die.” Rozanov looked at Shane, accusatory. “You want me to die?”
Shane looked down. The hot tub looked no more or less rancid than any other hot tub. “I don’t think you can get diphtheria from a dirty hot tub.”
“You are doctor now?” Rozanov asked, and Shane stayed silent.
Shane Hollander is a realtor who works with the Ottawa Centaurs to find properties for new players.
