“What’s wrong?” the Doctor asked, turning to face his companion. Jamie twisted with his body, of course, since he was so clearly using whatever patch of skin lay exposed as a living, breathing ice pack. He didn’t mind, really. It even made him smile a little.
After a moment passed and neither of them were any closer to figuring out the other’s thoughts, Jamie sighed and sat up, pulling himself away from the Doctor. “Something’s wrong with this place.”
The Doctor attempts to have a relaxing time with Jamie in a supposedly peaceful time period and place on Earth. Jamie, however, has something weighing on his mind.

Still refusing to look Polly in the eyes, with a brief moment of silence in between their exchanged pleasantries and the question that would have absolutely knocked her off her feet had she been standing, “How do ye know if ye love someone?”
During her time travelling through time and space with Ben, the Doctor, and, although he was a markedly later addition, Jamie, Polly has become quite well acquainted with the way things function between the four of them. Despite being a team, they quite easily divided into seperate duos if the moment required it; her with Ben and the Doctor with Jamie. She'd never really thought about the comparisons that might be able to be drawn before.

His regeneration had truly felt like a death, this time. The death of everything old and homely, familiar, and now all that was left was the unnatural. Truly, an alien in the shape of a human, a man. Someone that would stand tall and proud, when he could hardly hold his head up to look at anything other than the floor.
The calm after the storm is, usually, something pleasing. This time, however, he could barely find it within himself to feel relieved. With a sacrifice that great, only to spare himself, who could?

That night the man’s face was clearer. His eyes were a vague grey-blue and his hair was short and black, but when Jamie tried to get a closer look it all became unclear again, as if the man were some sort of impressionist painting.
Jamie didn’t even know what an impressionist painting was.
It is no secret that Time Lords aren't the most knowledgeable as to how alien minds work, and humans are no exception. Jamie's mind, just like any other human's, is plastic and malleable, and it refuses to leave his friends behind.

Oleanders grew in all but the coldest of climates. They were gorgeous and hardy, and every single petal was filled with poison, just waiting to be bitten into by an unknowing victim. Yet there he was, sat right next to one, his teeth unbearably close to sinking in. It really was tragic, just how beautiful of a flower he was.
