It's too much and not enough. The way Fern seems so desperate, it nearly intoxicates Stark. He knows he's not the smartest, but at least this, he can figure out. She needs him. As insane as it is to see such a pious, sweet girl like this.

Fern flushes and looks down again. Normally she doesn’t do things like this; she always thinks before she speaks or acts. But she supposes the thought that he was that afraid to be near her, that he really thinks he could hurt her, that he might subsequently avoid her, bothered her so much that she stopped thinking for a moment.
“I just meant…you won’t hurt me,” she assures, raising her head to meet his gaze.
