    In the next lightning flash one can catch how Xie Lian braces for the thunder, as though it's not the sky about to split apart but a blade about to pierce him — and then everything happens almost simultaneously.

    Hua Cheng lowers himself to the floor beside him, extending his palm; in Xie Lian's eyes a flash of recognition; with all the speed available to a martial god, Xie Lian lunges toward the only place his fear-flooded mind considers safe, and goes still there, curling to make himself as small as possible. (to be hidden entirely, to burrow into this safety, to hide from everything all at once)

    When he flies into Hua Cheng's arms, the ghost forces himself not to freeze — mentally wrenching his jaw in a desperate soundless cry — but holds him, breathing in ragged pulls, shuddering at every too-sharp gust of wind, holds him and covers him with his arms, lips touching the disheveled crown of his head. Breathe in, then out, make the dead heart beat in a slow, calm rhythm, and make the lungs expand and fall; pretend to be alive, so that the living body catches onto this imitation of life and follows.
