Summary
Her mother was gentle, wide-smiled, freckles scattered like constellations across her skin. In appearance, there were hardly any Korean traits; what gave her away, above all, was her last name. She never insisted on teaching her daughter what she herself had lived through in her childhood on Latin lands. As a result, Brazilian culture never truly captivated Zoey — not the music, not the slang, not the feverish rhythm. But one tradition survived the Atlantic crossing, passed on through her mother’s warm, laughing voice:
“The first slice of cake goes to the most special person at the table.”
— Zoey's birthday :)

Summary
Rumi gives them a shrug and says, “It would be nice to go back. I mean—I don’t remember much, but I was there with family, and it was…” Her hesitation makes both of her girls look over, concerned and ready to listen. Their looks make her feel like an anchor being pulled back to a ship.
“Being there made me happy,” Rumi finishes.
And it would be so nice to have it again with the family who make her just as happy.
Or, the girls go to Jeju Island for a vacation, and Rumi learns just how comfortable she is with the company she keeps.

Summary
It’s Rumi’s turn to frown, though she doesn’t let the expression stay on her face too long. There was a learning curve when she first started escorting souls on her own; maybe this is just the prelude to unlocking a new skill.
“Let me start over,” she placates, “I think I’m a little out of rhythm. I help guide souls like you to the world beyond. My name is Rumi, and I’m usually a lot better at this.”
“I’m Zoey,” Zoey smiles. “I think you’re doing great! But I’m definitely not dead.”
//
Rumi is the latest in a long line of Shepherds, spiritual chaperones who are tasked with guiding wandering souls toward their homes in the afterlife. Up late studying one night, she feels the usual call of a soul, except this one insists she's not actually dead. While Rumi is trying to figure out how to solve that problem, another soul emerges, which Rumi has been told is impossible. And there's something special about these two that makes Rumi want to keep them.....

Summary
They may have some actual competition now, but she meant what she told Zoey earlier. They don’t need to worry about the money.
The backroom door finally swings open—
“Holy shit,” Zoey breathes out.
—and all Rumi sees is pink.
(They don’t need to worry about the money. But they might need to worry about something else.)
Pink like summer hydrangeas; vibrant flowerets bunched and bountiful. Pink like a sea of muhly flooding a field; dreamy as the strands sway, as they flow like currents. Pink like hibiscus syriacus, like the heart of mugunghwa.
“Sorry about the wait,” the heart says, “I’m still getting settled around here.”
