Summary
It was every seaman's duty to keep himself clean and in good health, for his crewmates' sake as well as his own. Only Jopson, however, had the special privilege of being inspected by the captain. They observed this ritual every Sunday evening, and it was right and good that it should be on the Sabbath day, what with cleanliness being next to godliness and all.
With far too many opportunities to let his mind wander, Jopson entertains himself with a fantasy of ownership and control.

Summary
Francis, when he comes ‘round, is better than the best parts of all his mother’s previous boyfriends combined. He’s a drinker beyond excess but not an addict like her or her usual go-to— which is a nice change. He even worked at a good uni until he got caught drinking on the job a few years back and while he’s bitter about his new professorship being at a Furthering Education College, they don’t care about his drinking so long as he can do his lectures and keep the class graded so it suits his life surprisingly well— if he can look past his pride.
Privately, Thomas doesn’t think that Francis has ever once looked past his pride but he’s plenty willing to let that slide because Francis owns a nice little place in Hither Green and after six months he invites them to come live there with him.

Summary
When the days darken, a man's mood might darken as well. Everything becomes a matter of perspective, and from Jopson's perspective, nothing is more important than assuring that the captain's needs are met.
Unfortunately for everyone, his most pressing need is a finite resource.

Summary
Thomas knows well that it is not strategy or sailing that Captain Ross would know. He had shut enough doors, washed enough sheets, and pretended not to hear enough things, to know exactly what it was that Francis Crozier missed in Sir James Clark Ross. And so he finds he does know what to do after all.
Extracurricular duties are not always appreciated. Thomas Jopson attempts them anyways.
