Most people like her didn’t live so close to the sea.
She didn’t know if it was the same elsewhere, but here, the sea called. Those who could hear it moved to midtown, cloaked in the solid stone hewn from cliffside far above the seaspray. Every year, a few of the sea-called went over the cliffs. Every year, a few more of the sea-called moved away. Outside this place, she’d heard, water was water and nothing more. Salt tasted bitter, not sweet.
