I had a ring in my pocket. A real-life, custom-designed, thousands-of-dollars engagement ring in my pocket. And soon, very soon, I was going to use it.
You see, this has been an extremely long time coming. Truthfully, I’d had a tentative plan to propose to Annabeth since I was sixteen, if not before that. In hindsight, I think I knew she was the woman I wanted to marry from the moment she kissed me and we got involuntarily thrown into the canoe lake. She was smart and funny and compassionate and beautiful and the kind of person you dream of marrying as a little kid.
However, Annabeth is also scary and a genius. So planning a proposal that surprises her felt like a Herculean task.
