Shenzhou, by all accounts, is a peaceful realm. The court rules over the common people, the jianghu takes care of itself, and the absence of any world-rending events is simply a matter of course.
For only a select few, it’s almost too quiet, like a sunny day where there should have been a storm, like there’s something missing, a little tear in a sleeve that gets larger and larger as time passes and nothing is done to repair it.

Summary
It feels like a lifetime before Shin pushes Saint away, a sudden, violent movement, and Tew catches his breath. Shin wipes something off his face (tears? Were those tears?) and stalks away from Saint, past the rest of the class, and straight out of the auditorium; no one stops him. His face is stony, pale, but Tew can see devastation in his large dark eyes, like nothing he’s ever seen before on Shin.

He rides through most nights as well, but when his horse needs to rest, he meditates, sinking into dreams full of Xiao Jiu’s laughter, Ying Lei’s whining and Zhao Yuanzhou’s snarking commentary. When he wakes, there are tear tracks on his cheeks.

He doesn’t want to imagine what depravity lurks in Luo Binghe’s mind. He inclines his head, skin itching at the contact with Luo Binghe, and waits.
When Shen Qingqiu's life is in his hands, Luo Binghe asks for something Shen Qingqiu thought he'd given away long ago-- his loyalty.
