It continues this way, the sucrose niceties, the reaching flames, the bubble and toil. You breathe for the slick of steel on steel, the click of her boots on cobble, the stew of her iris and the black boiling kettle of her pupil, how it draws in, feline, when you slip her a bottle of rat poison for the cellar, how it spreads out, thick, when your gloved hands brush. You have picked apart, under waking light and inside many a dream, the detailed geography of her face: the valleys of innocent dimples and the cliffedge of the sharpened jaw; the knit of those careful brows whenever the saddle slips; that retreat of the lip and the following flash of a snarl, stormdrawn enamel, an absent and most delightfully feral threat.
Through the eyes of an outsider, you are two young women exchanging pleasantries in the street. Up close, you are playing a very long game of chess.

they’re working steadily through the wine, joking and laughing together on the sofa when aziraphale, downy and heathersoft, wipes his eyes and sighs:
‘oh, crowley, whatever do you want from me?’
now, that’s quite a big question, especially for one so spectacularly drunk, so crowley cannot quite answer it in that moment. probably, he laughs it off, maybe he makes a flirtatious comment, but he doesn’t answer it.
later, though, he does, to his bedroom ceiling, to his lonely apartment, to himself. he lies down, shuts his eyes and answers.
