Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice.
He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.
Impact.
The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

Summary
“We do not say anything about the Hollander situation,” LeClaire tells them even though it sounds like he’s already resigned to what he knows is going to happen.
After all, Roz gets extremely mad whenever it’s brought up. Not that Cliff can blame him, he’s pretty sure that Roz liked Hollander before this (wouldn’t chirp him half as much if he didn’t). Finding out that he’s such a bastard must sting.
Not to mention that Roz does not mess around with people that disrespect girls. Or women. Or kids. Or dogs. Or the elderly (excluding Scott Hunter). Or really anyone, if it’s for petty stupid reasons.
“Of course,” Cliff agrees for both of them since Roz is still too busy texting someone.
It’s apparently not good enough for LeClaire because he asks, “Roz?”
“Just one second,” he answers without raising his eyes from his phone or stopping his typing. “Need to get my Jane to agree with something. She’s very stubborn.”
Or. My take on the 'their text leak and now everybody thinks that Shane is an abusive bastard' premise. Featuring Ilya giving a presser, Marly realizing in real time who 'Jane' is and the internet reacting to the craziness.

Summary
“Birds living outside moved away. Went south, because you annoy them with your moaning every morning. They got sick of it.” Ilya’s words are breathy with laughter. Shane, still looking up at him, can see the exact moment the idea pops into his head.
Ilya pulls his hand away from Shane’s face and takes a small step back. It finally feels like Shane has a bit of space to breathe and try to collect himself-
Ilya drops onto his knees, lips parted with panting breath and eyes wide and shiny with admiration. Shane swears that he feels his heart stop in his chest.
He’s seen Ilya on his knees plenty of times, but this time it feels different. There’s an unspoken energy that has shifted between the two men, it’s just that Shane has absolutely no brainpower left to figure it out. It feels like a hand has just clamped down on his throat and his dick is aching at the sight of Ilya like this.
“In my mouth first, please.”

Summary
Shanks didn't expect this to happen so close to losing their parents, but he guessed that it wasn't that surprising given the change in environment and the loss of their parents. As well as the impact this had on his younger siblings, now wards, Ace, Sabo and Luffy.
The only good thing to come out of this mess was meeting the father of Luffy's best friend Zoro, and the way he now had a person to vent to and to talk to, when being a single parent became a little too much.
