He always tried his best to ignore rumours and whispers, all too aware of how misleading they could be, how each person in the chain of gossip tinges a story with their own biases and judgements. He couldn’t remember if someone had ever explicitly claimed that the Warrior had something specific, but when he met her for the first time, he realised that in his head, he had mistakenly assumed her dæmon was one of those classically heroic types—the ideals you saw in story books: a lion, or a stag, perhaps a wolf.

a means of gaining or preventing entrance, possession, or control.Y’Shtola would not pretend to understand Kana’s relationship with Azem, outside of the bare facts. It is not something she could begin to empathise with herself. She does not know if she had an unsundered self somewhere in that far flung past, and while she couldn’t deny being curious, ultimately, it did not matter. There is far too much to contend with already in the present to start worrying about what her soul might have been doing some millennia ago.
That is easier for Y’Shtola to say, though, when she isn’t being dogged by her predecessor’s legacy at every step.

“G’raha Tia,” she says, rolling every syllable of his name on her tongue like one would taste wine, slow and deliberate. “A pleasure, then.”
She offers him her hand. Slender, elegant fingers peek out of her half glove, a writer’s callus prominent on her middle finger. G’raha beams, as radiant as the sunlight cast over the crystals surrounding them, and takes it.
Much later, as he looked back and realized he had not fallen in love, but slowly and surely descended into it, he’d be able to point out the smile she offered him that day as the first step down.
Through (a hundred and) five years apart, G'raha Tia and the Warrior of Light find that happy endings do not come without sacrifice.
