“You were watching us last night,” the girl observed, and the boy lifted his gaze to look first at her, then at Eddie. A confused frown seemed to be permanently branded onto his face, mixed with a squint that screamed of a headache. No wonder, Eddie mused, getting a closer look at his bruises. He was probably concussed, should have stayed in bed. So naturally that it seemed like nothing else could have happened at that moment, the two reached out for one another and tangled their fingers together. Eerie, Eddie thought with a shudder, but also strangely endearing.
“Not much else to do around here,” he answered her statement somewhat belatedly with a shrug of his shoulder.
Or, ever since Eddie was admitted to this psych ward, he has been dying of boredom.

As he studied Steve, he noticed something was different. Something about him had changed. Whether it was maturity, he couldn’t tell—but things weren’t as he remembered. For one, he looked worn out, like life had finally caught up to him. The confident sparkle in his eyes was no longer there—instead, it was replaced with something else. Something darker. Hurt. That alone was easy enough for Jonathan to identify.
Even though his instincts screamed at him to pull away—something else, something he couldn’t suppress—urged him to stay. Jonathan couldn’t decipher what it was. Desperation, empathy, or perhaps a sense of longing. Because when the two of them made eye contact, Jonathan found that outwardly, they were no different.
