Last Will & Testament

Summary:

Three years after The Fall of Sin, Spira becomes embroiled in the Beckoning Pandemic.

Souls of the deceased are returning to their loved ones, lured by the grief and suffering their memory begets while the imbalanced Farplane overflows with hundreds upon thousands of Zanarkand Fayth. United by an ancient terror once more, Yuna joins Baralai alongside their family and friends in his campaign to seal the temples, healing the planetary wounds wrought by Shuyin's ruined machinations— if only to protect Tidus's existence.

[An in-depth novelization of the audio drama FFX -Will- with references to FFX-2.5: The Price of Eternity.]

Arc I: The Shadow of Sin. Chapters 16/20.

Notes:

The first arc, which encompasses the entirety of the -Will- audio drama, will probably span 13 chapters. After that, I will approach the multiple emerging conflicts such as the Yevoner hunters (which I will transition into calling them Faythless, because it sounds cooler), The Beckoning, the mastermind behind Sin, etc. I've got a lot in store for this fic, and I want to finish it before the actual game ever comes out in my old age. XD

Explores the latest canon published in the companion novel FFX-2.5: The Price of Eternity, and features additional lore from FFX-2: International + Last Mission, Fiend Tales, and Iutycyr Tower.

Chapter Text

"Strike me down."

"Extinguish me." "End it here."

"Please… Defeat me." "Soon... Eternal rest." "Take my life."

"Thus I atone." "Stop the suffering."

"Gotta say goodbye."

"Don't cry."

A lone pyrefly descends upon a ruinous, desolate landscape.

Aurora borealis guides its tumultuous journey across the emerald-gold plains, from the snowy mountain tops to the sea of stars, lured by the song of wailing pyreflies amidst nebulous clouds. It hovers close above ground now, illuminating a broken bridge submerged in murky waters as ripples form along the shallow surface.

Zanarkand. The pyrefly shimmers, clinging to that singular, propulsive thought, anchored by emotions not of its own.

Anguish and grief, hatred and resolve—

"I hate you, Dad."

"—You're gonna cry. You always cry. See? You're cryin’."

"Everyone! This is the last time we fight together, okay? What I'm trying to say is... After we beat Yu Yevon, I'll... disappear! I know it's selfish... but this is my story!"

—and inner peace.

Hope and happiness, love and acceptance.

Voices sing the Hymn of the Fayth. Aeons fade into the aether. A young woman dances atop the zenith of a twilit sky, marking the end of a long and beautiful dream wrought with death and destruction. She runs through open arms to embrace the cold, empty air; he runs on spectral feet to fall through golden clouds; and the pulsating pyrefly finally coalesces, reaching out for his father's outstretched hand.

A phantom hand obscures the light of the crescent moon overhead.

Ebon robes and elaborate scarves manifest from the collective memory of lingering, ancient souls. The Unsent blinks, gazing up at a starry cloud sky, wisps of platinum-white hair shrouding his azure eyes.

"...Tidus."
