Best of Me

Summary:

“Hyung,” he said, carding a hand up through Seokjin’s hair—black again, now—and leaning his own head in briefly. “Relax. This is supposed to be fun.”

Seokjin glanced at him. “I know,” he murmured. “But everyone is looking at us.”

Seokjin wasn’t wrong, of course, about the staring. It was date night. And Jeongguk had suggested the club because he wanted to dress up and he wanted to dance. It wasn’t his fault that people noticed when he and Seokjin stepped through the door.

Takes place a few years after "East of the Sun," but can be read as a stand-alone.

Notes:

YOU GUYS! Oh my gosh hi! Hello! *waves enthusiastically, hugs everyone* I missed you all! I apologize for being extremely MIA. I've been busting ass on my dissertation (I just wrote half of my first chapter in the last two months), and I've been really hesitant to interrupt the momentum I have going with writing unrelated to my diss.

I've been piecing this story together since early January. I'm really happy with it. It takes place roughly three years after East of the Sun and roughly a year after Hurt Locker. Despite that, I'm pretty sure you can enjoy this as a stand-alone if you accept that the parameters of this universe are well-established at this point.

Enjoy!

Work Text:

Seokjin was sulking.

His lips had turned down in what was, quite frankly, an adorable, kissable pout, and his nose scrunched a little, just the tiniest bit. Jeongguk was sure it wouldn’t be noticeable to anyone else, but to him… Well, there weren’t many of Seokjin’s expressions that Jeongguk didn’t recognize. He had committed the majority of them to memory when he was only a child.

“Hyung,” he said, carding a hand up through Seokjin’s hair—black again, now—and leaning his own head in briefly. “Relax. This is supposed to be fun.”

Seokjin glanced at him. “I know,” he murmured. “But everyone is looking at us.”

Jeongguk blinked in surprise. “Are you saying you don’t like the attention?”

Seokjin bit his lower lip. “I don’t know,” he said. “Maybe.”

Seokjin wasn’t wrong, of course, about the staring. It was date night. And Jeongguk had suggested the club because he wanted to dress up and he wanted to dance. It wasn’t his fault that people noticed when he and Seokjin stepped through the door. And especially Seokjin, who had chosen a silk top of the palest gold, and who was glimmering like some sort of ethereal being under the lights of the club’s many chandeliers.

Seokjin was beautiful. And he smelled like an omega. And there was no mistaking that Jeongguk was an alpha. Of course they were getting looks.

Jeongguk half-turned, taking one of Seokjin’s hands. “Then don’t look at them,” he said, smiling. “Look at me.”

Finally Seokjin cracked a smile. His head tilted and he eyed Jeongguk sideways. “I’m always looking at you,” he said, quietly enough that Jeongguk couldn’t hear him over the thrumming music.

But Jeongguk knew the shape of Seokjin’s lips, and he had learned to read them long ago.

He smirked. “Good,” he said, “as you should.”

Seokjin rolled his eyes. He was lazily swirling a drink in the hand that Jeongguk wasn’t holding, and the liquid and ice cubes within caught the light and sparkled.

“Dance with me,” said Jeongguk, pushing his own empty glass away.

Seokjin hesitated, biting his lip again. It was starting to flush red from where he was worrying the delicate skin with his teeth. “I don’t know, Jeongguk,” he said, gazing warily at the crowded dance floor.

“Come on, hyung,” Jeongguk whined, pleading. He urged Seokjin to set his drink down and tugged on his hands. When the elder still didn’t move, Jeongguk leaned in, nosing playfully at his neck. He slid one thigh between Seokjin’s and his eyelids fluttered at the small hitch he heard in Seokjin’s breathing. “Please? Dance with me, hyung.”

“Fine,” Seokjin grumbled, and Jeongguk didn’t wait around before pulling Seokjin out to the dance floor.

There were a lot of smells on the dance floor; lots of alphas, lots of betas, several omegas. Jeongguk could smell all of them. But Seokjin stood out the clearest, like rain and summer vines and ice cream. Seokjin always stood out the clearest.

Jeongguk’s hips were moving before they had even settled in place, the music calling him, his body already responding. Seokjin shuffled awkwardly, still glancing furtively around and wincing at the crowd of bodies, so Jeongguk moved him, pulling him flush, and gripped the back of his neck over his bond bite.

Seokjin relaxed almost immediately. His breath eased out and he smiled just the tiniest bit. Jeongguk wasn’t entirely sure why Seokjin was so nervous; this wasn’t exactly their first date, or their first time out dancing. But he had years of practice at reading Seokjin, and years of practice calming him down.

“Don’t look at anyone else,” said Jeongguk, leaning up to ghost the words along Seokjin’s ear. “Just watch me.”

When he pulled back, Seokjin’s smile had bloomed. “Like the first time, right?”

Jeongguk let his hands smooth down Seokjin’s sides to settle at his waist. “Yeah, like the first time.”

Seokjin was sitting cross-legged on the couch. His laptop was balanced precariously on one knee, and sheets of paper covered the cushions around him. He was wearing the perfectly round reading glasses that he insisted he didn’t need, and only kept around because, aside from actually needing them, he enjoyed fawning them off to Jeongguk and then exclaiming at how cute he looked wearing them.

“What are you doing?” asked Jeongguk, leaning over the back of couch.

Seokjin startled, paper shifting around him as he jumped.

“Don’t do that,” he groaned, rubbing his heart. “That whole sneaking up on me thing.”

Jeongguk laughed. He leaned over further and planted a kiss on Seokjin’s cheek. “It’s impossible for me to sneak up on you, hyung. You know this.”

Seokjin grumbled indistinctly, not answering, because Jeongguk was right. They couldn’t sneak up on each other, not with the bond. Seokjin was always at least marginally aware of where Jeongguk was. Still, Jeongguk had a habit of moving quietly, and appearing suddenly. Especially when Seokjin was wrapped up in something—as he was now—it didn’t take much to surprise him.

Jeongguk nodded toward the laptop and the papers again. “What are you working on?”

Seokjin shifted the papers around and then patted the space next to him, so Jeongguk vaulted over the back of the couch and landed next to him, settling down and leaning his head on the elder’s shoulder to peer at his computer.

“I’m almost done with my application,” Seokjin told him.

“For that restaurant you’ve been thinking about?” asked Jeongguk, perking up.

“Hmmm,” hummed Seokjin. “Yeah. They’re hiring a sous-chef.”

“Hyung, that’s great!” said Jeongguk, squeezing his side a little. “We should do something to celebrate when you finish.” Jeongguk tapped his bottom lip. His breath puffed against Seokjin’s neck. “We should go dancing!”

Seokjin’s fingers slipped on the keyboard. He turned slightly, eyes wide. “What?” he asked. “Dancing?”

“Yeah!” Jeongguk replied, nodding eagerly. “It’ll be fun! Namjoon and Taehyung went last week. Even Namjoon said it was fun, hyung. Let’s go!”

“Namjoon and Taehyung went dancing?” asked Seokjin blankly. “Namjoon?”

Jeongguk’s head continued to bob. “Yes, hyung, Namjoon. And he was actually pretty good at it, according to Taehyung, so…” He leapt to his feet and held out his hand.

“Namjoon was good at it,” Seokjin repeated. He eyed Jeongguk’s outstretched hand. “What is this for?”

Jeongguk sighed impatiently but rolled his eyes with a smile. “To dance, hyung. Let’s dance.”

Seokjin took Jeongguk’s hand but didn’t rise from the couch. “But we’re in our living room.”

“It’s a pretty simple concept, hyung,” Jeongguk told him, tugging on his hand. Seokjin rose slowly and blinked wide eyes as Jeongguk pulled him flush. He let one hand rest on Seokjin’s waist, fingers curling, and wrapped the other around the back of his neck. He leaned in and nipped at Seokjin’s lower lip. “You. Me. Dancing.”

Seokjin’s lips were slightly parted now, his pupils a little blown. “But there’s no music,” he breathed.

Jeongguk smiled. He fished his phone out of his back pocket, pulled up a playlist, and then tossed his phone on the couch. Low, dulcet jazz tones filled the room, and before Seokjin could voice another protest, Jeongguk twirled him around and urged his hands up.

“Hold onto my shoulders, hyung,” said Jeongguk with a crooked grin. “I know you like doing that.”

“Cheeky,” Seokjin retorted, but did as told.

Seokjin’s eyes darted around as they began dancing, swaying gently from side to side.

“Look at me,” said Jeongguk, and it wasn’t an Alpha Order, but he put some weight behind it. Seokjin’s eyes snapped up immediately, and he shivered at the sudden release of alpha pheromones. Jeongguk leaned in and kissed him slowly, to the beat of the music. When he pulled away, Seokjin was flushed and breathless and beautiful.

“It’s just us, hyung,” he murmured against the omega’s lips. “Dance with me.”

The tension eased out of Seokjin slowly, but finally his arms settled more comfortably on Jeongguk’s shoulders. They weren’t doing much, not really. Just swaying. But one of Jeongguk’s hands was at his waist and the other was at his neck, and it was doing something to the omega in Seokjin, something slow and a little sultry. Without really thinking about it he leaned forward even further into Jeongguk’s space, nosing at the hollow at the base of his throat.

“You smell so good, Jeonggukie,” he murmured, his voice a low slur.

Jeongguk tipped his head up and kissed him again. His hips rotated slowly, and he urged Seokjin to mimic his movements.

It wasn’t hard, after that. Jeongguk danced and Seokjin danced with him, loose-limbed and more graceful than he realized. Jeongguk slid his hands over Seokjin’s shoulders, up and down his back, around the curve of his ass.

“You know what they say about men who can dance, hyung,” he whispered, relishing Seokjin’s small groan as he dipped his fingers just below the waistband of his jeans.

“No,” said Seokjin, a tad breathlessly. “I don’t think I do.”

Jeongguk smiled and hitched one of Seokjin’s legs up around his hips. “I guess I’ll just have to show you then, hyung.”

“Oh, god, yes please,” gasped Seokjin.

Seokjin was a natural, even if he refused to believe it. In less than a minute he was moving against Jeongguk easily, his smile lazy and his eyelids lowered, skin glimmering under the lights. He was hypnotic, and Jeongguk was charmed. The music was loud and thrumming, the bass so intense Jeongguk could feel his body vibrating. Around them, the crowds of dancers were jumping and moving with quick, frenetic energy.

But Jeongguk kept the pace of their dancing slow. The music blared, and Jeongguk countered it by grinding his hips slowly against Seokjin’s. It wouldn’t have worked for anyone else, going against the beat of the music.

But it worked for Jeongguk.

Without seeming to realize what they were doing, the other club goers had cleared space on the dance floor around them, so that Jeongguk and Seokjin danced in their own little bubble. Seokjin was stunning, moving his body languidly against Jeongguk’s, lithe, feline in the way he arched his back under Jeongguk’s hands.

“Hyung,” Jeongguk hissed quietly, bringing his forehead to Seokjin’s, dipping in quickly to steal a biting kiss.

If Seokjin’s anxiety was gone now, Jeongguk wasn’t going to question it.

The song changed, the tempo slowing down, going deep and seductive, and Jeongguk ran a hand down the outside of one of Seokjin’s thighs, watched his eyelashes flutter, sucked the gasp off his lips as he gripped behind Seokjin’s long, pretty leg and hoisted it up.

But Seokjin, apparently, wasn’t going to let Jeongguk have all of the fun. When Jeongguk released his leg he leaned in teasingly, just shy of a kiss, and then dropped low, his hips swirling, dragging blunt nails down Jeongguk’s chest, nosing at his belt buckle before he rocked back up again, his eyes narrow and his lips parted.

Jeongguk stared, rendered speechless.

Seokjin danced forward. “What?” he asked, his voice a little teasing, a little challenging, but all Jeongguk could do was gape at him.

He swallowed convulsively as Seokjin turned in his arms, so that they were back to front, Seokjin’s glorious ass pressed into Jeongguk’s hips. They rocked together and Jeongguk fought not to close his eyes against the sensations Seokjin was evoking in him. He splayed the fingers of one hand over the flat plane of Seokjin’s belly and brought the other up to Seokjin’s hair, tugging gently so that Seokjin was forced to lean his head back on Jeongguk’s shoulder.

“This isn’t so bad,” Jeongguk whispered, leaning down to lick along the shell of Seokjin’s ear.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Seokjin smile.

“Not so bad,” Seokjin said back, the glint of teeth in his smile belying how much of an understatement that was.

Jeongguk couldn’t seem to stop nosing along Seokjin’s neck, even though they were in public. But it wasn’t like they were the only ones affected by the music and the atmosphere, and they were bonded, so Jeongguk didn’t really care. Seokjin seemed to like it. He encouraged Jeongguk with little gasps and purrs, and looked more and more blissed out with each song.

Jeongguk could feel sweat dripping down the side of his face when they finally paused for a drink, five songs later. Seokjin asked for water, and the bartender looked a little dazed as he got it for him.

“This was a good idea,” Seokjin finally said, bumping Jeongguk’s shoulder with his own. “I’m glad we came.”

Jeongguk grinned. “Yeah?”

Seokjin nodded. “I didn’t think I would have fun, but,” he shrugged a little. “This is nice.”

Warmth filled Jeongguk. He ducked his head, smiling, the alpha in him glowing and pleased that he could make Seokjin happy.

“It is nice,” Jeongguk said. “We should do this more often.”

Seokjin looked like he agreed, and opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by an alpha suddenly appearing behind them.

“Seokjin?”

Jeongguk started to turn around curiously, but Seokjin instantly froze. Jeongguk took in his sudden rigid posture, the way his cheeks had paled, his fingers clenching around his glass, and turned to the newcomer with narrowed eyes.

The alpha was just slightly shorter than both Jeongguk and Seokjin, but stocky, with the type of bulging muscles that said he liked spending time at the gym. Jeongguk sized him up dismissively, not at all concerned about this newcomer’s appearance. Very few alphas were stronger than Jeongguk, no matter what their muscles looked like.

“Seokjin, is that you?” asked the alpha, ignoring Jeongguk.

Seokjin turned around. His face was a mask, smooth and expressionless. His eyes were shuttered. Immediately Jeongguk felt sixteen years old again, recognizing Seokjin’s expression, or lack thereof, from the better part of the year that he had spent completely avoiding Jeongguk.

“Hello,” said Seokjin blankly.

The alpha’s nostrils flared and his eyes cut toward Jeongguk. “You’re bonded,” he said, and Jeongguk didn’t think he was imagining the hostility present in the alpha’s gaze and posture. His eyes were glued to Jeongguk’s neck, right at the spot where Seokjin’s bonding bite had turned to a silvery scar.

“Yes,” said Seokjin. He made no move to touch Jeongguk, but his shoulders relaxed marginally at the reminder that his alpha was next to him.

Jeongguk, on the other, had no hesitation about using his height to loom over this new alpha, not liking his tone or his gaze. Jeongguk normally didn’t like posturing, nor did he feel the need to do it. But it was obvious that Seokjin was uncomfortable, and that was unacceptable to Jeongguk. The other alpha didn’t back down, but his eyes were wary. Obviously Seokjin knew this alpha. Jeongguk was the only unknown factor, and he used that by snarling low in his throat, watching with a sort of vicious satisfaction as the stranger shuffled back a little.

The new alpha tried to hide his reluctance for confrontation by sniffing in Jeongguk’s direction, eyeing him up and down. “He’s a little young for you, isn’t he?” he asked, eyes moving back toward Seokjin.

Seokjin tensed up all over again, and Jeongguk knew suddenly, without having to be told, who this alpha was. He still remembered holding Seokjin as he cried. He remembered Seokjin’s fear, how unfair it was that he had to switch economics classes back in college because of some ass of an alpha who wouldn’t leave him alone.

Jeongguk remembered sitting on the couch, on a night when Seokjin drank too much, and cried too quietly.

“He grabbed me,” said Seokjin finally, after a long stretch of silent crying. “He grabbed me in class and pulled me down on his lap and told me that he was my assigned seat, now. It’s mostly alphas in that class, you know. They laughed.”

Jeongguk bit back a growl, but he remembered, and he could see it now. He could see it in the alpha’s eyes, the possessive desire not for Seokjin as a person, but for such a beautiful omega. It was the type of want that caused desperation, that made this alpha suddenly dangerous, and made Jeongguk suddenly unsure of the best course of action to take.

Seokjin gently touched Jeongguk’s arm. “Jeongguk is my alpha,” he said. His voice sounded steadier now. His hand was solid and warm on Jeongguk’s arm. “And you’re not worth my time.”

His hand slipped down to Jeongguk’s wrist and he tugged, pulling Jeongguk back out onto the dance floor. He wrapped his arms around Jeongguk’s neck and leaned in, nosing behind his ear.

“Calm down,” he said soothingly, and Jeongguk realized for the first time that he was shaking.

He breathed noisily out of his mouth and inhaled harshly, shaking his head. “Sorry,” he murmured. He was sure that Seokjin couldn’t hear it over the music, but the elder smiled anyway.

“Don’t be sorry,” he said. He leaned in and brushed his nose against Jeongguk’s. “It’s not worth going into a rage over.”

Jeongguk blinked quickly. “He hurt you.”

Seokjin shook his head. “A long time ago,” he admitted. “But I have you now. I’m better now. He’s not worth it.”

Jeongguk took a deep breath. “Okay,” he mouthed. “Okay.”

The song playing was a slow one, and so they swayed back and forth in each other’s arms, and Jeongguk tried to calm down, but he could feel the tremors moving through his body despite Seokjin’s soothing smile.

“Do you want to go?” asked Seokjin, before the song was even finished playing.

Jeongguk felt bad, didn’t want to ruin what had been a fun night, but he nodded.

Seokjin’s gaze was understanding. “Okay, let’s go.” He led them off the dance floor, weaving easily between bodies, and headed for the door.

Jeongguk pulled back. “Bathroom,” he said, gesturing. “I’ll be right back.”

Seokjin eyed the dark hallway that housed the toilets and nodded. “Okay, I’ll wait at the bar.”

Jeongguk slipped away, taking deep breaths through his nose as he headed toward the bathrooms. Inside, he splashed cold water on his face and stared at his reflection in the mirror. He washed his hands slowly and thought consciously about controlling the rage that he could still feel frothing inside him.

But on the way back out of the bathroom, he caught the scent of the other alpha, and red bled into his vision.

“You again,” said the alpha unhappily, opening the bathroom door just a moment before Jeongguk reached it himself.

It was as if Jeongguk lost control of his own body. He had the alpha out in the hallway and pressed against the wall before he even knew what he was doing, one strong arm pushed into his sternum, and a knee hard between his legs, making the alpha squeak in a manner that was not altogether dignified.

For a moment the other alpha tried to fight off Jeongguk’s hold. He flexed his muscles, growled low in his throat, and pushed against Jeongguk’s arm. But it was no use. Jeongguk had practically been raised by Yoongi, who had taught Jeongguk everything he knew about being an alpha. There simply was no way another alpha could overpower him.

“Don’t ever speak to Seokjin again,” said Jeongguk lowly, when he was sure he had the alpha’s attention. “Don’t even think about him.”

The alpha snapped his teeth. He obviously wanted to say something, so Jeongguk pressed him harder against the wall.

“You aren’t worthy of being an alpha,” he said. He laughed slightly, finally seeing what Seokjin had seen all along. “And Seokjin was right. You aren’t worth my time.”

He turned to walk away, but the alpha reached a hand out, gripping his shoulder.

“I should have known he would pick someone like you,” the alpha hissed. “He never could take care of himself. Of course he would need a kid like you to—”

Later, Jeongguk would deny that his emotions had gotten the best of him.

But that wouldn’t explain why he turned around and punched the other alpha square in the jaw, so hard his knuckles audibly cracked. The alpha dropped instantly, probably more out of surprise than anything else. Jeongguk stood over him as he clutched his jaw, breathing hard, and thought about Yoongi, and Taehyung, and how the three of them all harbored something dark and ferocious inside them, something that came out sometimes no matter how hard they fought against it.

He thought about how easy it would be to keep going, to kick this alpha while he was down.

In the end he just scoffed, shook out his hands, and walked away.

Seokjin was leaning against the wall just inside the hallway, head tilted lazily, quietly observing. Jeongguk’s shoulders drooped as he approached, but Seokjin didn’t look mad.

Seokjin eyed the fallen alpha before looking at Jeongguk.

“Violence is never the answer, darling,” he drawled, but his lips twitched at the corners.

Jeongguk shrugged, but even he was starting to smile now. “He deserved it,” said Jeongguk.

Seokjin laughed. “Always the knight in shining armor, eh Jeonggukie?” he said. He reached out and grasped Jeongguk’s hand. “Take me home, hero.”

Jeongguk raised Seokjin’s hand to his lips and brushed a kiss along his knuckles. He nodded. “Let’s go.”

Seokjin kissed his neck in the backseat of the taxi.

Jeongguk’s hand was starting to throb, but the feeling of Seokjin’s lips on his skin, brushing along the sensitive slope of his jaw, trailing down from his ear, took his mind off of the pain.

“You don’t need to punch people out for me, you know,” Seokjin whispered. He trailed a hand down Jeongguk’s chest and nipped at his silvery bond bite.

“I know,” said Jeongguk, trying to control his breathing. “I know I don’t.”

“He was baiting you,” said Seokjin, his voice lightly teasing.

“Yeah, well,” Jeongguk grumbled. “I fell for it. But so what? He hurt you.”

Seokjin didn’t say anything else, just grasped Jeongguk’s chin and turned his head so that he could kiss him for real, on the lips. Jeongguk let him, just for a moment, and then pulled away.

“We’re almost home, hyung,” he said, suddenly shy, glancing toward the front of the taxi.

“Are you sure seeing me beat up another guy didn’t turn you on?” asked Jeongguk once they were home and Seokjin had crowded him against a wall, still kissing his neck.

Seokjin glanced up and blew hair out of his eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous,” he said, but his cheeks were flushed and he was smiling. “As soon as you punched him I pictured you fighting for real, the way alphas used to, before silly things like civilization stopped them.”

Jeongguk raised an eyebrow, but he also instantly responded to Seokjin’s words by posturing just a little. Seokjin smelled heavenly. His scent was thick with arousal.

“It was a biological response,” Seokjin argued. “I couldn’t help it.”

“I didn’t say anything, hyung,” Jeongguk laughed, only quieting when Seokjin hit his arm. “How did alphas used to fight?”

Seokjin smirked as he slowly began unbuttoning Jeongguk’s filmy black dress shirt. “Well, naked, for one,” he answered. “And usually to the death.”

He got the last button unhooked and Jeongguk’s shirt slid right off his shoulders.

“A smart omega accepts nothing less than the best,” said Seokjin quietly.

Jeongguk fingered Seokjin’s gold shirt. Fought the urge to rip it right off of him.

“And what about you, hyung?”

“I’m extra picky,” said Seokjin, smiling. “But you’re extra good.”

Jeongguk reached for him, and he wasn’t sure if he lifted or if Seokjin jumped, but somehow Seokjin’s legs ended up around his hips, and Jeongguk kicked the door the bedroom open and tossed Seokjin on the bed.

The fight must’ve done something for Jeongguk too, because he felt wild suddenly, the rage that had only minutes ago been curling in his stomach morphing into a burning heat, working up through his limbs, making him shake for a different reason. He peeled Seokjin out of his clothes and marveled, for the millionth time, at his beauty.

He wondered how many alphas would have fought to the death for an omega like Seokjin.

“Do you think I would win in a real fight?” asked Jeongguk, trailing his fingers down the long line of Seokjin’s body. “In a fight for you?”

Seokjin’s grin had an edge of teeth to it. “You are the best,” he said in answer, and then tugged so hard at Jeongguk’s belt the buckle almost broke.

Jeongguk took Seokjin from behind, slowly, curled over his arched back and mouthing hotly at his neck. Seokjin groaned and moaned and hissed and begged, until Jeongguk felt like he was unraveling to all of those sounds, until his knot formed—even without the impetus of Seokjin’s heat—and he and Seokjin were tied so tightly together that they could do little more than rock gently.

Jeongguk almost shook right out of his skin when Seokjin’s body clenched around him, tightening vice-like. Seokjin gasped his name as his orgasm hit, and Jeongguk followed him, trembling, into an explosion of pure light.

“Hyung,” said Jeongguk, several minutes later, once they were nestled back to front on their sides, waiting for Jeongguk’s knot to go down. “Why didn’t you think it would be fun? At the club. You said you thought you wouldn’t have fun.”

“Oh,” said Seokjin, laughing sleepily. “It’s not a big deal. I’ve just been feeling a little old recently, I guess. And I was worried that the club was going to be entirely full of young, spry people, and that I would stand out.”

“Hyung,” Jeongguk grumbled. He rubbed his palms in soothing circles over Seokjin’s belly. Seokjin always stood out, but only ever for good reasons.

“It’s fine,” said Seokjin. “I know what you’re thinking. Twenty-five isn’t old. I think it’s just the pressure of finally applying for real, grown-up jobs, you know? And you’re still in college. For as much as I’ve accepted it, sometimes our age difference still smacks me in the face. I worry, even if I know I shouldn’t.”

Jeongguk buried his face in the back curve of Seokjin’s neck. “And then that alpha, he said I was too young for you.”

“Yeah,” Seokjin said. “I was finally having fun, and then it was like my worst fears were facing me all at once. But I don’t know, Jeongguk. Turning around and seeing him there, for the first time none of it bothered me. I didn’t feel too old or not good enough for you. I think I just finally realized what a bully that alpha is. He’s small, inside and out, and way more afraid of me than I am of him.”

“And not worth your time,” finished Jeongguk.

“Not at all,” said Seokjin.

They both moaned quietly and shifted a little as Jeongguk’s knot finally went down enough for Seokjin to turn in his arms, so that they could face one another.

“Thank you, though,” said Seokjin. His eyelids were starting to droop, but he still leaned in and pecked Jeongguk’s lips.

“For what?” mumbled Jeongguk, also feeling slumber’s swift descent.

“For punching him,” answered Seokjin.

Jeongguk smiled. He brushed his nose against Seokjin’s. “Only the best for you, babe.”
