Our Playing Ground

Summary:

Uraraka tries to spar with Midoriya, but Bakugou interrupts and shows him what a real fight is like.

Notes:

Day 3: Rematch

Heyo! This is a different approach to the prompt; I wanted to get more in depth of the actual Kacchako sparring scene, but with my limited knowledge on fight scenes, I had to cut it off right there. I also didn't want to drag the chapter on and make the word count much longer than the previous works. I still hope you still like it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Deku, do you think you could train with me?” a sienna-haired girl called out to Midoriya, was walking away from the rest of the class after Aizawa had instructed them that it was a quirk-honing day. He said they had to push the upper limits of their quirks,

Midoriya, who was about to claim a corner to practice his shoot style, turned around at the unexpected request from his female friend. He wore a surprised expression, earning a confused look from the petite girl.

“Deku? Did you freeze up on me?” Uraraka inquired as she stopped right in front of his figure and waved a hand toward his face, slightly tilting her head to the left.

Snapping out of his daze, Midoriya hesitantly replied, “Uh, su-sure, Uraraka!”

The two walked toward an isolated area and did some stretching before sparring with each other. Before the two started, Uraraka pleaded, “Don’t go easy on me just because I’m your friend or classmate or whatever. Please, Deku.”

Knowing Midoriya, Uraraka knew that he would go easy on her just like everyone else. Even if he was aiming to be the number one hero, he would never fail to hesitate fighting his friend or classmates

Midoriya nodded and said nothing more, “Come at me, Uraraka!”

Uraraka charged toward Midoriya, and she pressed the pads of her fingers together, aiming high and trying to float him from the get-go. However, he side sidestepped just before she was able to lay a hand on him. Expecting that sort of reaction, she grabbed onto his arm and put him into a headlock. He struggled, but she could tell that he wasn’t fighting back. Ugh I should’ve known this was going to happen.

Activating One for All while her guard was down, Midoriya took this moment to break himself out of the lock and create some distance between the girl. Because her quirk was close-combat, it was the wisest decision without having to fight her.

Midoriya didn’t want to fight Uraraka, and he never intended to ever, but seeing the tint of challenge behind her auburn orbs made him think that maybe, just maybe he would be able to fight her, but now that he was actually doing it, it was much harder than he thought. He just couldn’t break out of the pure boy character and actually take her seriously for once. And he felt horrible for that.

Uraraka gave a disappointed look, because she knew damn well that Midoriya was clearly hesitating. She wouldn’t say it out loud, but she was mad that he wasn’t giving it his all. It was like he put all his will power into anything except when fighting her. Does he really see me as a weak girl like everyone else, or what?

It’s not that Midoriya thought she was weak, but rather, he was too infatuated with her that he couldn’t possibly hurt a fly on his classmate and crush. That would only continue to give off the wrong idea.

Uraraka continued to push him to fight back by throwing a couple of punches only to be dodged by his evasive maneuvers. She charged toward him and threw him on the ground right before body slamming him. Not wanting to continue this pathetic fight any longer, she stood up and held her hand out to help him up before she reprimanded him for going exactly against her request.

Unbeknownst to the two, the Baku-squad was watching from afar, observing the sparring that was happening between the two friends.

“Why was Midoriya holding back?” Ashido asked the group.

“It’s Uraraka. The nicest girl in the class. The angel of the bunch. She’s too sweet to get blood on her hands,” Kaminari stated, with Sero nodding in agreement. Of course, they meant this with pure intentions, not realizing how offensive it may be toward the girl. Little did they know how much it irked Bakugou. He gave a little growl in disagreement.

Kirishima chimed in, “Come on guys, Uraraka wouldn’t be happy to hear those wor—” he started, but stopped himself once he saw the scene that unfolded before his eyes.

Bakugou, with steam practically coming out of his ears from anger, stomped toward Uraraka and Midoriya. He crossed his arms and gave a prominent scowl. Midoriya shrunk at the sight of his former friend.

“Oy, Deku! The fuck do you think you’re doing?” Bakugou wasn’t one to hold back when calling someone out, “You two look like you’re playing fucking Patty Cake!”

“Kacchan, no, I-we were just—”

“Save it, shitty nerd. Let me show you how to actually fucking fight,” he said as he pulled Uraraka by the wrist and led her with him, so they could duel.

Her eyes widened at the fact that Bakugou, of all people, was hauling her.

Uraraka was baffled.

Uraraka was astonished.

Uraraka was grateful.

Because she knew where he was getting at. Even if she and the class hot-head didn’t talk at all, and even though he lashed out at literally everyone for the most trivial of reasons, he was still here, willing to fight with her. Despite if it was to prove a point or whatever, or if he really just wanted to beat the shit out of her, she knew that she would get a good fight out of him. Because he never held back with these kinds of things. If he didn’t hold back at the Sports Festival, no way in hell would he hold back now. That wasn’t the “Bakugou” way of doing things. They had both given it their all, pouring all of their hard work and passion and effort and strength into one single fight. Like it was a fight to the death. And the best part—he had treated her like an equal. She was sure he wouldn’t fail to do so this time around. Uraraka smiled at the thought.

“The fuck are you smiling for, round-face?” Bakugou said, bringing Uraraka back into reality.

“Nothing you need to worry about, Bakugou.”

“Tch.”

“Thanks,” Uraraka muttered under her breath, so only she could hear it.

“Stop muttering to yourself, and give me a real fight, Uraraka,” Bakugou cut straight to the chase.

A spark illuminated in her eyes, a determination that hadn’t been there when she fought Midoriya, because she fought Bakugou before, and she knew what she was signing up for. That alone made her feel whole. He made her feel validated while on the same playing ground, and that was enough to restore her drive and strengthen her resolve.

Notes:

Bakugou? Treating someone as an equal? Acknowledging their strength? What a great concept.

Also, I've been seeing the dark side of the fandom call Uraraka weak so much that it's unreal. Do y'all forget that she literally got third place in the UA entrance exam? Just putting that out there. Y'all stay SLEEPING on my girl.

Just going to discreetly drop my Instagram here

Lastly, thank you all SO SO SO much for leaving kudos on the previous works! I really appreciate it, and it keeps me going. <3
