“As awesome as ever, Baji-san!” 16 year old Chifuyu beamed, looking brighter than the sun that was setting itself, his eyes gleaming with admiration as he watched Baji let go of the unconscious guy in the older’s hand.
Baji didn’t pay attention to Chifuyu’s compliment, simply humming to let the younger know that he heard what Chifuyu had said.
If he stared at Chifuyu any longer, he might actually lose his composure and just combust in front of his ex-vice captain.
Which, was something Baji would like to avoid doing.
It would’ve been embarrassing if that happened.
Baji scowled a little when he noticed Chifuyu’s face that was covered with more injuries than usual, reminding him that Chifuyu had been trying to fight all these people off by himself.
“They said they wanted to kill you! I can’t just stand back! I’m here to protect you, after all!” Chifuyu said when Baji had confronted the younger as to ‘why Chifuyu didn’t ask him for help’.
This had happened a few times already; gangs Toman once defeated aiming to get revenge by beating the members up one by one.
Chifuyu was known to not get involved in petty fights anymore now that Toman was disbanded when the blonde was 14.
So they started using Baji’s name to rile Chifuyu up.
Obviously, it worked.
Sure, Baji was touched and all, but he rather Chifuyu didn’t get into these meaningless fights and got his cute- his decent face ruined.
Approaching the younger who had started rambling about how cool Baji had looked, the blonde instantly stopped talking when Baji tilted Chifuyu’s chin, examining Chifuyu’s face for any particular major injuries.
He was definitely not using it as an excuse to stare-
“Stop getting into these useless fights. I thought we both agreed to stop beating people up for meaningless reasons?” Baji murmured, raising an eyebrow.
“But they were saying-”
“And I’m here to tell you that they’re just riling you up.” Baji sighed, taking in a deep breath before ruffling Chifuyu’s hair, letting his fingers linger longer than usual.
He prayed Chifuyu didn’t notice how Baji just really want to comb his fingers through the Chifuyu’s hair-
By the time the two had started walking back home, Baji’s head was filled with thoughts, discreetly glancing at Chifuyu’s hand that kept on bumping into his as they walked side by side.
The ravenette remembered Kazutora’s words when the other had caught Baji staring at Chifuyu unconsciously, the bi-coloured male immediately grinning in mischief when he noticed.
“You should try dropping hints, Baji. Pretty sure the guy likes you too..”
Everyone wondered why Baji had thrown curses and chased Kazutora that day, looking a little bit embarrassed.
At least Chifuyu was too engrossed in his conversation with Souya to notice.
Thinking back, Baji wondered if he should try his luck…
“Fuyu.” Baji spoked, instantly receiving a ‘yeah’ as a response.
Crap.
He didn’t really think of anything to say.
Uhh…
“Wanna get some peyoung yakisoba?” Baji ended up saying, feeling dumb.
Lucky enough, Chifuyu didn’t seem to notice Baji’s nervousness, the younger immediately agreeing to Baji’s suggestion as the duo made their way to Baji’s apartment.
No rush , Baji convinced himself.
He still had a lot of time, after all.
🌸 1 🌸
It was Valentine’s Day when Baji realised that he didn’t actually have all the time in the world.
For some reason, on that day, Chifuyu told Baji to head off home first, the younger saying he had something else to do.
“It’ll be short!” was what the blonde had said.
Which was why Baji started worrying when the latter hadn’t arrived at their apartment complex even after an hour.
Baji paced back and forth at the stairs to their apartment complex, glancing at the entrance of the apartment building every one minute.
Where is he where is he where-
“Oh! Baji-kun! What are you doing here pacing back and forth?” A neighbour of Baji’s greeted, a smile on her slightly old face.
Remembering she was a friend of his mother’s, Baji went and took the groceries bags out of the lady’s hands, brushing it off as ‘it was nothing’ as the two of them walked to the fifth floor together.
“Something’s worrying you?” she asked, a warm smile on her lips.
“Ah… it’s nothing, really. I’m just waiting for someone. He was… running a little bit late today.” Baji answered, itching to just go back and wait for-
“Your boyfriend, is it? I remembered your mother told me that you keep on denying your feelings for the other boy. Doesn’t he live on the second floor?”
It was honestly inevitable when Baji had choked on air, coughing violently as the lady patted his back, asking if he’s okay.
Obviously he wasn’t?!
“Mom said Chifuyu’s my boyfriend?!” Baji asked, struggling to stop himself from blushing and acting like a highschool girl with her crush.
“Well, no. But most of us just assumed-”
‘Most of us’?!
That just meant that his mother had been spreading this… odd fake news to more than three people already!
Reaching the lady’s door, Baji inhaled sharply before he asked, hesitantly,
He honestly didn’t know if he wanted to find out or not.
“You said ‘most of us’ just now. So uhh… how many people exactly knows?”
“Not that many! You don’t have to worry! Just the whole apartment complex. We do occasionally have hangouts between us moms so-”
Didn’t that just mean that everyone around him knew?!
“Oh! Speak of the devil…”
“Baji-san!”
Baji never turned his head so fast-
Placing the groceries bags carefully in front of the lady’s door, Baji instantly went to Chifuyu, struggling to cover his worry as he inspected Chifuyu for any injuries.
Just in case.
“Why took you so long?! Did someone try to rile you up again? Why didn’t you text me?” The questions slipped past Baji’s lips, too worried to filter his thoughts.
Worry Baji was definitely not something you see any day.
Chifuyu blinked a few times, reminding Baji how out of character he acted.
Clearing his throat, Baji made some distance between him and the blonde, composing himself as he rephrased his questions,
“What took you so long?” Baji asked, internally sighing in relief when he confirmed Chifuyu was not hurt anywhere.
It was honestly funny thinking like that, since Chifuyu could definitely defend himself and the guy’s literally his ex-vice captain.
But Baji’s still worried anyway.
Who’s going to protect Chifuyu if the guy protects Baji?
“Sorry, Baji-san. But my hands were quite full. Managed to walk faster after putting all the chocolates inside this paper bag I’ve just bought.” Chifuyu explained, scratching the back of his neck bashfully.
Hold up-
“Chocolates?” Baji asked, noticing the full-looking paper bag that Chifuyu was holding.
That better not be what Baji thought it was-
“Yup! Chocolates!” Chifuyu beamed, looking bright as he opened the paper bag and showed what’s inside to Baji, gushing how it felt like he’s a main character in a shoujo manga.
Chocolates…
…and are those love letters?!
Since when did Chifuyu get so popular?!
“I don’t think I can finish them all… so let’s share them!” Chifuyu offered, already taking a chocolate candy and eating it, relishing it as he hummed in delight.
Baji could literally feel the disbelief gaze from the lady he had helped on the back of his head.
“Chifuyu-kun? Have you at least rejected them properly?” The lady asked, saying things along the line ‘you already have a boyfriend!’.
How in the world Baji should explain-
“Well, yeah, I did reject them. I would rather spend time with Baji-san anyway.” Chifuyu smiled, the lady returning the smile in endearment, saying ‘young love’ before finally excusing herself.
…
At least Chifuyu didn’t notice the lady’s implication-
“Why did she say I have a boyfriend?”
-anddd Baji jinxed it.
God Baji jinxed it badly.
Quick quick thought of a lie-
“Maybe because you do.”
God dammit! That’s one horrible lie you came up with, Baji Keisuke!
“I do?” Chifuyu asked, head tilted in confusion.
The sunset illuminating Chifuyu’s already pretty features was not helping Baji to think of another decent lie.
“I guess she got confused cuz I said ‘you’re my bf’.”
Wow.
An actually decent lie.
Baji’s heart panicked a little when he noticed Chifuyu’s face suddenly went beet red.
“I-I-I’m your bf??” Chifuyu inquired, confused and flustered.
Uhhh what the fuck should Baji do-
“You meant ‘best friends’, right?” Chifuyu asked again.
..
….
……
Should he-
“Of course you mean ‘best friends’! I thought it was something else!” Chifuyu came to a conclusion himself, averting his gaze away from Baji, his cheeks now flushed due to embarrassment.
Nooo
Wait- you’re absolutely right-
“I- thank you for uhh… calling me your uhh… ‘bf’! I really… I’ll cherish it!” Chifuyu stammered before pushing the paper bag with his chocolates towards Baji’s chest and said he had to go feed his fish in a rush.
Since when did Chifuyu has a fish-
“I think you meant Peke J!” Baji called out, staring helplessly as Chifuyu almost tripped on air as he said, “No! I do, have a fish! It’s imaginary!”
And like that, Baji was left alone with a bag of chocolates and love letters for Chifuyu.
…
He should’ve been more straightforward-
Kazutora and Mikey instantly ’disowned’ Baji when the ravenette had told them what had taken place that evening.
“Useless. Pathetic.” -Kazutora
“Are you sure you’re 17? You just made a 7 year old kid’s mistake.” -Mikey
They really didn’t have to rub salt on the poor ravenette’s wounds.
🌸 2 🌸
Baji decided he’ll try to… uhh… drop hints.
The amount of people who started paying attention to Chifuyu was honestly making Baji self-conscious.
Sure, Baji knew Chifuyu obviously liked him; platonically or romantically(?).
He sure hoped it was the later-
“Baji-san!”
The familiar voice napped Baji out of his daze, the ravenette who was leaning against the wall and mindlessly scrolling through his phone immediately pocketing his phone, turning to the source of voice.
Chifuyu grinned, carefully slipping through the crowd with a box of popcorn and-
“One coke only?” Baji asked, confused as he gingerly grabbed Chifuyu’s wrist and pulled the younger towards him when it was getting more crowded.
The blond could’ve been swept away by the ‘current’ if Baji hadn’t grabbed Chifuyu’s wrist on time.
“Uhh… yeah… It was actually the last coke. It sold out pretty fast today. Maybe because the new movie we’re gonna watch now is actually quite anticipated?” Chifuyu answered, eyes lighting up when he noticed they could enter the cinema already.
Right, they were gonna watch the movies.
But not in Chifuyu’s living room this time.
Baji had, bravely, asked Chifuyu out on a date.
…
In his dreams-
The one who had suggested Baji to ask the younger to go on a date was Kazutora, a pretty normal suggestion from the kinda twisted guy.
“Is that how you say thank you now? By calling me twisted?” Kazutora rolled his eyes, smacking the back of Baji’s head.
So, yesterday, Baji tried asking the blonde out on a date.
It went like this in short.
“Wanna hangout at the cinema tomorrow?”
“Cinema? That’s rare coming from you. But sure, Baji-san!”
…
Spot the mistake-
Baji was supposed to say ‘wanna go on a date to the cinema with me?’! Not ‘wanna hangout at the cinema.’!
Chifuyu probably thought of it as just a hangout!
Honestly, Baji blamed Chifuyu for looking so huggable yesterday, eyes droopy as the two of them were re-watching a movie they’ve watched plenty of times already.
The movie was honestly just an excuse for Baji to hangout at Chifuyu’s.
But the regret Baji felt was gone a long time ago, his head now clouded with another distracting fact.
“Quick, Baji-san! Let’s enter the cinema already! I’m tired of standing around and being pushed around by the crowd!” Chifuyu urged, handing the box of popcorn to Baji before tugging on Baji’s sleeve and dragging the older into the cinema, Chifuyu’s other hand occupied with their only coke.
For a moment there, Baji short-circuited.
Since Chifuyu was leading the way, Baji took the time to stare at Chifuyu, feeling his heart thumping slightly quicker when he stared at Chifuyu in the baggy sweater.
Baji’s, baggy sweater.
Apparently, the younger was running late, so he just grabbed a random sweater and put it on, too in a rush to notice.
When Chifuyu had met Baji at the steps, it was then the blonde finally noticed.
“Is that mine?”
“…ah… sorry, Baji-san! I was running late- lemme just change-”
“Don't have to. Let’s just get going.”
It took all of Baji’s strength to act like he’s unbothered-
Since Chifuyu’s place was like a second home for Baji, the ravenette had brought extra clothes to Chifuyu’s place.
Who knew it’ll lead to this instead?
Baji wished he could just take a picture-
“That’s our seat, Baji-san.” Chifuyu whispered, keeping his voice down as the movie was about to start soon.
Mumbling whispers of sorry, Chifuyu led the way, grinning as he plopped on the seat at the centre of the cinema.
“Sit here, Baji-san.” Chifuyu said, patting the seat beside him.
Baji complied, of course.
He would’ve just stood there like an idiot and stared at Chifuyu if it wasn’t for Chifuyu patting the empty seat.
“I’ve been waiting for the second movie for sooo long! Can’t believe I get to watch it at the cinema with you!” Chifuyu hummed, literally vibrating in excitement on his seat.
Baji recalled the first movie, instantly remembering it was about an exchange student from Canada bumping into a skateboarding-enthusiast.
“You think those two will end up together?” Baji asked, glancing at the younger who reached his hand out for the box of popcorn.
“Well, I don’t know. The story didn’t really focus on their relationship. So I’m not sure… it’ll be cool if they did though.” Chifuyu said, munching some popcorn as Baji had placed the box of popcorn between them.
Eventually, after a few ads, the movie started.
It’s hard to focus on the story when Baji was distracted by the blonde that was sitting beside him.
Chifuyu sat cross-legged during the whole movie, trying his best to not just fawn or squeal loudly as they’re in the cinema after all.
It was a miracle Baji could actually remember the plot with the way he spent more of his time staring at Chifuyu rather than watching the movie itself.
After almost two hours, the credits started rolling in, most people just left while Chifuyu told Baji to just relax for a few more minutes.
“Maybe there’s a bonus scene by the end! Just to be sure.” Chifuyu had said, beaming.
Who was Baji to destroy Chifuyu’s fun?
By the time the credits ended, there’s only a few people left in the cinema, waiting.
Surprisingly, there was, a bonus scene.
Apparently, the two main characters did end up together, but it was only implied through a conversation between their mothers.
Sure, Baji asked Chifuyu if the two would end up together or not.
But he’s still surprised, since both of them were guys and… same-sex relationships weren’t really common.
“Baji-san! They actually did end up together!” Chifuyu cheered, shaking Baji’s shoulders before standing up and jumping in place in glee.
“Did you foresee it?! I mean, I don’t, like, ship them as hard as everyone else but I’m kinda glad they did end up together!” Chifuyu grinned, Baji’s own cheeks muscles hurting as he watched the younger smile wider and wider.
“Well, I guess their dynamic just fits each other.” Baji shrugged, standing up and sipping the coke as he signalled for Chifuyu to grab the empty box of popcorn to throw it into a nearby trash can.
The two walked side by side, Chifuyu rambling about how amazing the movie was while Baji listened.
“Ah~ Thirsty…” Chifuyu sighed, glancing at Baji before he asked for the coke.
Oh.
Right.
Baji literally hogged the coke during the whole movie-
“Ah, sorry. Here.” Baji handed Chifuyu the coke, the younger stared at the straw for a few moments before taking a sip and handing it back to Baji, cheeks flushed.
Huh?
…
Did Baji chew on the straw unconsciously and made Chifuyu disgusted or something-
“Let’s just… go back home! I wanna scroll through Twitter to see the others’ reactions.” Chifuyu stammered, his cheeks warming up before walking ahead, bumping into someone before apologising rapidly and resumed walking.
???
Baji didn’t question why Chifuyu had said he wanted to scroll through Twitter at home when the blonde obviously had his phone with him.
It’s odd, but Baji’ll let it go.
After Chifuyu had somewhat calmed down and walked slower, Baji finally caught up with the younger, glancing and noticed that Chifuyu was not blushing that hard anymore.
“Na… Baji-san.” Chifuyu suddenly said.
“Hm?”
Chifuyu looked like he contemplated for a moment before he asked,
“You… still… wanna be my… uhh… friend, right?” His voice was like a whisper, but Baji heard it loud and clear.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I?” Baji immediately answered, tilting his head in slight confusion as he stared at the younger.
He couldn’t get enough of the sight of Chifuyu in his sweater-
“Well… I guess… I don’t know. You’ve been… acting differently around me?” Chifuyu voiced out his thoughts, looking insecure and hesitant.
“How so?” Baji asked, sipping the coke only to scowl when he noticed it was already finished.
“Well, for example, uhh…” Chifuyu started playing with his sweater paws as he started talking.
Baji found it really hard to focus when Chifuyu did that-
“Like, you don’t… uhh… wrapped your arm around my shoulder anymore… and you don’t… uhh… look at me… anymore? Umm not like- uhh…” Chifuyu trailed off, cheeks turning rosy as his stammers were getting harder to understand.
…
Of course Chifuyu would notice-
Baji stopped wrapping his arm around Chifuyu’s shoulders because his heart would start beating wildly if they stood really close-
The ravenette also didn’t really look at the younger when the younger looked at him anymore because Baji knew he might end up staring into Chifuyu’s eyes and mesmerised-
How exactly would he explain why?!
“It’s… uhh… probably because I can’t stop staring at you if we make eye contact.” Baji murmured, stopping himself from turning to Chifuyu because he just didn’t want to see Chifuyu’s reaction-
“Staring…?” Chifuyu asked, tilting his head in slight confusion.
Uhhh
UHHH-
“Is there something on my face? Is it acne- Why didn’t you tell me sooner, Baji-san?!” Chifuyu suddenly started panicking, started rambling as he hid his face in his- Baji’s , sweater.
Adorable, really, but-
“Oh! Look at the time! I definitely have a goldfish to feed!” Chifuyu literally announced in a rush, started sprinting away and just waved.
“You don’t have a goldfish though?!”
“It’s imaginary , Baji-san! I still have to feed it!”
…
A total failure, really.
“I think this one is on Chifuyu, dude. Didn’t he know his face is fucking flawless? Anyway, better luck next time.” -Kazutora
🌸 3 🌸
Sooo…
Baji decided to seek help from Draken.
Since, well, the guy looked like he could help him. In some way.
“Have you tried taking him out on a date?” Draken asked, the two of them hanging out at the playground all of them were supposed to meet for the evening.
Baji shuddered at the thought of his and Chifuyu’s first ‘date’.
“…sort of?” Baji ended up answering.
Draken raised an eyebrow at Baji when the ravenette didn’t sound so sure.
“How about going on a date that you both would enjoy? Sure, you guys… go to the movies, was it? How about… going to a cat cafe? Since both of you like cats.” Draken suggested.
Baji perked up at that.
That’s actually a good idea.
The cats could distract Baji from being too tense and just be himself, in other words actually enjoying his time with Chifuyu!
Seeing Baji’ positive reaction, Draken grinned, telling Baji about a new cat cafe that had just opened recently.
“He’ll definitely like it. Both of you, would definitely like it.” Draken said, turning away from Baji when Mikey and Chifuyu finally arrived, followed by Taekimichi and Hinata.
The six of them chatted the whole evening, about the most random things.
Baji took the time to think of how to invite the younger to the cat cafe, thinking of inviting him as soon as they’re done hanging out.
He was in the middle of planning his sentence when he realised they’ve started to go home already.
“Talk to you guys later!” Mikey grinned, dragging Draken with him.
Takemichi and Hinata went away too, both planning to walk around for a bit.
That left Chifuyu and Baji alone by the swings.
The younger was still sitting on one of the swings, going back and forth slowly as silence engulfed them.
…
“Sooo, Fuyu.” Baji started, taking a seat on the other swing and discreetly staring at Chifuyu, the sunset doing its job by illuminating Chifuyu’s features just right.
“Yeah?” Chifuyu asked, turning to Baji and grinning.
Okay, okay, you can do it.
Just say ‘Let’s go on a date.’, it’s very easy and simple, really.
“Wanna go on a date.”
…
Baji finally said it-!
“…you mean… you wanna go on a date?” Chifuyu asked, looking a little disheartened as the blonde unconsciously pouted.
What?
Huh?
“Yeah yeah. Do you?” Baji asked, eager.
Aside from Chifuyu’s small pout, he looked like he wouldn’t mind.
Great!
“There’s a newly opened cat cafe recently. Wanna check it out together?” Baji asked, elated he finally managed to get his points across-
“Well… I guess Kazutora-kun would definitely like a cat cafe… good luck… I guess…”
…
What’s up with that solemn voice-
WAIT-
“Kazutora? What does he have anything to do with this?” Baji asked, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“You said you wanna go on a date. I just assumed you’re gonna go on a date with Kazutora-kun?” Chifuyu asked back, as if it was obvious.
It wasn’t.
“Oh! Or is it Draken-kun? Since you got here earlier with Draken-kun. You guys were probably- oh I’m sorry for just assuming things!”
“Fuyu-”
“Obviously you meant Kazutora-kun! Sorry, my bad.”
“Fuyu. Listen-”
“Ah! I think dust got into my eyes! That’s just my goldfish calling for me to feed him!”
“Fuyu-?!”
“I’ll be off now! Bye! Good luck with your date!”
Anddd then Chifuyu went, sprinting away.
…
Devastated, Baji went straight home that night.
Baji went to Chifuyu’s place that night and knocked, but the younger didn’t answer the door, simply messaged Baji saying he didn’t feel well.
…
Baji hoped his gut feeling about Chifuyu crying was true.
“… sorry, man. I tried.” -Draken
🌸 4 🌸
Mitsuya.
Mitsuya should know how to properly ask someone out on a date.
The guy himself was dating, after all.
“From your whole story, I think all you gotta do is work on your way of asking him out. Try making your intention clear.” Mitsuya had advised, the male sighing when Hakkai suddenly barged in and demanded his attention.
That was basically the only advice he got.
…
How exactly was Baji gonna do this?
Baji perked up when his phone lighted up and notifications popped up, the ravenette checking it and immediately grinning from ear to ear when he read the messages.
“Wanna go to the cat cafe you mentioned a few days ago, Baji-san?” -Fuyu
“Not that it has anything to do with ur date and Kazutora-kun or anything.” -Fuyu
Baji scoffed.
“We didn’t go on the date.” -Baji
“Nice!” -Fuyu
“Uhh srry. Autocorrect. I said ‘Nooo!’ actually.” -Fuyu
“I don’t even wanna date him.” -Baji
“Σ(゚д゚lll)” -Fuyu
“Then who were you talking abt yesterday?” -Fuyu
…
Baji can’t believe this guy-
Baji left Chifuyu on read after that, simply making his way to the cat cafe, not walking in a rush nor too slow. Simply enjoying the light breeze of the evening.
Before he knew it, he was already standing in front of the cat cafe where he was supposed to meet Chifuyu.
It only took one glance for Baji to find Chifuyu.
The blonde was already inside, sitting cross legged as he was covered with cats: a black cat on his lap, a white-orange kitten on his head and an orange cat on one of his shoulders.
Baji took a picture first of Chifuyu first before entering the cafe, receiving words like ‘welcome’ from the employees there.
Baji made his way to Chifuyu, crouching down in front of Chifuyu before taking the white-orange kitten on Chifuyu’s head into his arms, smiling in endearment as he watched the cat stretched and napped.
“He’s cute, isn’t he? He instantly climbed up my lap to my head as soon as I sat down!” Chifuyu said, looking excited and happy.
The laughs that tumbled out of the blonde’s lips when the blonde cat on his shoulder started licking his cheek literally made Baji swooned .
Ah…
Cat cafes were definitely something Baji will make as another favourite place for the two of them.
The ravenette reached out and ruffled Chifuyu’s hair, the younger immediately leaning into the touch and humming, looking like a cat himself.
“Cute.” Baji let it slip past his tongue.
The younger tensed at that, cheeks rosy as he blinked a few times.
“A-ah… the cats here are definitely cute.” Chifuyu said, pulling himself away from Baji’s touch and went to hide his face on the black cat in his lap instead.
…
Baji might actually have a hard time trying to work things out.
The whole day, Baji kept on dropping compliments like ‘cute’, ‘soft’ and things along the line, most of them directed at Chifuyu.
Sadly enough, Chifuyu didn’t seem to realise all those compliments were for him, instead simply agreeing with Baji.
…
At least Baji got to see Chifuyu flush every time Baji said a compliment…
Baji wondered what Chifuyu would look like if he just accepted the compliments for himself.
Would Baji get to see a redder Chifuyu?
Either way, the two of them walked back home together that night, Baji managing to actually compliment Chifuyu and Chifuyu finally realising all those compliments Baji had said at the cat cafe were actually for the blonde.
Baji regretted not taking a picture of flushed Chifuyu under the moonlight.
In other words, at least today’s plan was failed successfully.
“I don’t think I can be… uhh… straight with Chifuyu. No pun intended.” -Baji
🌸 5 🌸
Baji’s gonna used his most effective move.
…
His mother-
“So you’re finally growing balls to ask Chifuyu-kun out? Good. Marvellous. I’ve been waiting my whole life for you guys to get together!” Baji’s mother had cheered, even going as far as wanting to celebrate.
“Well… we’re not even together yet…”
“That’ll change soon, dear.”
And that’s how Baji ended up saying ‘wanna dine out tonight?’ to Chifuyu.
Baji’s mother said to try and relay his feelings to Chifuyu over dinner, preferably at a quiet place where there’s only the two of them.
Thus, why Baji found him and Chifuyu sitting at the steps of their apartment at midnight.
…
Okay, maybe Baji misunderstood something but-
Baji snapped out of his thoughts when he heard someone going down the stairs, Baji getting ready his box of peyoung yakisoba to be shared with Chifuyu when the ravenette noticed Chifuyu also brought a box of peyoung yakisoba.
“Baji-san! I made some peyoung yakisoba! We can share it tonight-”
…
Ah…
“I guess we won’t… share?” Chifuyu chuckled, taking a seat on the steps beside Baji and opening the box of peyoung yakisoba he prepared.
…
“I wanna eat yours.” Baji suddenly said, not even giving Chifuyu time to respond as he took Chifuyu’s box and handed his box to the taken aback blonde.
Immediately, Baji started digging in, smiling a little at the familiar taste.
Chifuyu’s peyoung yakisoba was definitely his favourite after his mother’s.
Baji raised an eyebrow when Chifuyu stared at him with a grin.
“What ya looking at?” Baji asked, munching.
Chifuyu’s grin widened, the blonde laughing a little as he said, “Looking at you. Duh.
You look like you’re really enjoying the peyoung yakisoba I made.”
The ravenette had to turn away when Chifuyu flashed a bright smile, Baji acting as if he’s eating when he was really just internally screaming in panic.
Chifuyu started eating Baji’s peyoung yakisoba after that, humming in delight.
“Did you make this yourself? Usually you would just ask your mom to make it when we eat together.” Chifuyu asked, smiling cheekily when Baji stuttered out a small ‘yeah’ before clearing his throat in embarrassment.
He was not , supposed to stutter.
“Why did you suddenly want to… ‘dine out’?” Chifuyu asked, laughing a little when Baji narrowed his eyes at the blonde.
“Don’t you dare tease me! Shouldn't you be encouraging me to use these… complicated words?” Baji scowled, munching on the last bits of Chifuyu’s peyoung yakisoba before closing the box.
“Well, personally, don’t people use the word ‘dine out’ to like, I don’t know, ask someone out on a date over dinner?” Chifuyu teased, too busy laughing to notice Baji literally stopped breathing for a few seconds.
Uhh…
“Whatever.” Baji frowned, looking away and stared at the sky to distract himself from his own thoughts.
…
“You’re doing it again.” Chifuyu suddenly said, voice sounding solemn.
“Do what?”
“You know… acting… different? Distant?” Chifuyu said, vaguely gesturing at nothing in particular.
Distant?
“How so?” Baji asked, now looking at Chifuyu.
The blonde pursed his lips, thinking for a while before he spoke again,
“Well, you… you always look like you’re thinking hard about something. I’m pretty sure you’re not the type to think of school or stuff related to it in your free time. Toman is already disbanded so you don’t have a reason to think about it. Your friends are also safe and happy. So… I couldn’t really guess what you’re thinking about.”
Chifuyu played with his fingers for a few moments before making eye contact with Baji, the latter feeling his heart skip a beat when Chifuyu’s sea-green eyes met his.
“What exactly are you thinking about, Baji-san?” Chifuyu finally ended his question, eyes looking determined to get an answer.
Looking at Chifuyu being so determined to unravel Baji’s thoughts was honestly endearing.
Chifuyu looked taken aback when Baji suddenly laughed, sounding free and less on edge than the past few days.
“What’s so funny?” Chifuyu asked, pouting a little.
“Just… thank you for being my best friend.” Baji smiled, smiling even wider when he noticed Chifuyu’s face had gone red.
“N-no problem! I… uhh… I’ll be anything you want me to.” Chifuyu stammered out, not daring to look Baji in the eyes anymore.
Sure you will.
“Would be cool if you can be my boyfriend too.”
…
Huh?
Baji literally froze after the sentence left his lips, not realising he had accidentally switched his thoughts with what he was supposed to say.
Uhh-
“Well, don’t we all have boyfriends?”
…
WHAT-
“I mean, ya know… you meant kboyfriends! with a space, right? As in, ‘boy’ and ‘friends’, right?” Chifuyu said, looking like he’s convincing himself.
…
This was friend zoning in a whole other level-
“Ah! I actually want to see your Mom! I bought a little something for her since her birthday’s coming up! Let’s go see your mom.” Chifuyu grinned, closing Baji’s box as he excused himself to take said gift from his apartment.
…
Baji decided he’ll give up for the night.
“Hmm… just stay strong, hon. I’ll tell you something that’ll definitely help! One day!” -Mom
“…for someone who likes to read shoujo mangas, Chifuyu-kun sure is kinda slow at picking up hints.” -Mom
🌸 +1 🌸
Riding his bike when it’s midnight was definitely the best feeling ever.
“Oi! Baji-san- slow down!” 18 year old Chifuyu, who sat behind Baji, scolded lightly, his arms around Baji’s waist wrapping tighter.
“Live a little, Fuyu! It’s midnight! No one’s around!” Baji grinned, fangs peeking out of his grin.
Chifuyu made a complaining noise from the back of his throat, burying his face in the crook of Baji’s neck instead.
Hm…
Baji definitely liked nights like these.
Stopping at a nearby playground, Baji hopped off, making his way to the swings there before plopping on one of them, sighing.
The blonde immediately followed after Baji, taking a seat on the swing beside Baji and sighing too.
“Midnight breeze is the best.” Chifuyu hummed, staring up at the sky and just… enjoying the breeze.
2 years had passed since Baji’s attempts to… uhh… ‘get together’ with Chifuyu.
Baji decided he’ll just let go of his feelings after his last try.
The ravenette didn’t even try to hide his thoughts anymore; sometimes saying it out loud while the younger gaped, too surprised to give a response. Other times, Baji only had to stare and stay silent and Chifuyu would know Baji was thinking about something .
It was always satisfying to see Chifuyu start rambling in embarrassment before he excused himself with the same old goldfish excuse.
And just like those times Baji suddenly sputtered nonsense, this night was no different.
“I really like you.”
Sure, it was usual for Baji to tease and just voiced out his random thoughts and compliments about the younger.
Maybe it was because of the silence? The timing? The stars?
Baji didn’t know why he suddenly admitted it.
Baji watched as Chifuyu froze, cheeks turning rosy as the younger turned to Baji, blinking as if he’s waiting for Baji to say ‘sike’ or ‘just kidding’.
Though Baji didn’t feel like joking and running away from facts today.
When a few minutes had passed and Baji still haven’t said anything, Chifuyu asked a dumb question.
“Like? As in, platonically or-?”
“I said what I said, dumbass.”
…
Chifuyu stared at Baji as if Baji’s gonna disappear if Chifuyu blinked-
“Is this a dream?” Chifuyu asked another dumb question.
Seriously-
“Aren’t you supposed to be smarter than me?” Baji deadpanned, suddenly standing up without really thinking, just letting his actions do their thing, and went to pull Chifuyu up off the swing before-
-before wrapping an arm around Chifuyu’s waist and his other hand tilting Chifuyu’s chin and-
-and-
Oh god they’re kissing-
By the time they were separated from each other, Baji finally processed what he had done, blinking a few times as he stared at Chifuyu’s red lips and glassy eyes.
…
Baji couldn’t believe he did that-
“Uhhh what did this mean?” Chifuyu asked all of a sudden, hands gripping the front of Baji’s shirt as he hid his face in the older’s chest.
…
“I guess we’re boyfriends now.” Baji shrugged, grinning a little when he felt Chifuyu squeezed his shirt.
“Ya know, as in ‘boyfriends’ with a space?”
Baji instantly tightened his arms around Chifuyu’s waist when he felt the blonde froze in his arms, even having the audacity to laugh.
“Joking, joking! I was joking!” Baji laughed, smiling in endearment when he felt Chifuyu punched his chest weakly.
“It was not funny.”
“You know what’s funny? Your excuses when you panicked as soon as I tried to make a move on you.”
Watching Chifuyu flushed in embarrassment had never been so satisfying-
“You- I- it’s your fault for dropping ’bombs‘ out of nowhere! Besides, you weren’t… uhh… straightforward at all! I thought you were joking… or something…” Chifuyu tried defending himself.
But really though. It was the guy’s fault for keeping on running away everytime Baji tried to drop hints.
“Was I looking nervous, not giving you any hints?” Baji asked, tilting Chifuyu’s head and pinching one of Chifuyu’s rosy cheeks.
Chifuyu looked offended at that for some reason.
“You didn’t look nervous at all!” Chifuyu deadpanned.
What?
“But I’m pretty sure I’m always tense around you during those times though?” Baji murmured, tilting his head in confusion.
“Actually, you looked moody. Like, super moody.”
They ended up talking about their misunderstandings for hours after that, back on the swings, but this time with their fingers intertwined.
Baji went home that morning looking like the happiest man alive.
“Should've just acted like myself right from the start.” -Baji Keisuke
