The Gold's Gold

Summary:

They sign the papers, Wilbur drags Tommy into a dizzying kiss that tells the story of a year and a half of love, and when it's done Tommy feels exactly the same and entirely changed all at once.

"Thomas Gold," Wilbur says with reverence, and Tommy thinks he'll never get tired of hearing his new name, "I love you."

Tommy grins, "Till death do us fucking part."

"Till death do us fucking part," Will agrees, and they walk out hand in hand.

----

Or, after a year and a half of dating, Tommy and Wilbur get married. The only problem is now they have to tell all their friends.

Notes:

This is a rather impulsive one shot of engaged/married Tombur that was running around my head that I thought I'd share since there is far too little established relationship Tombur out there.

Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tommy's not a fan of jewelry, but recently he's made an exception for one particular piece: A delicate, unobtrusive, and well polished gold ring with a few white gems embedded into the metal sized perfectly to Tommy's left ring finger.

No more than a week old.

He remembers when Wilbur slipped it onto his hand, bringing it up to his lips to bless a kiss to the now decorated finger like it was an hour ago. Tommy had rolled his eyes and Wilbur had laughed and they had kissed until they were dizzy because fucking hell that wasn't his boyfriend anymore that was his fiancee .

Tommy feels a rush of residual giddy happiness bring a smile to his face. He moves to twist the ring around his finger as he thinks, a habit he's already picked up, and feels the joy dampen when he remembers it's not on his finger, it's on a necklace hidden below his shirt because they're filming today and despite how much Tommy wants to shout to the world and kiss Wilbur on rooftops he can't.

Because no one knows.

They've been together for two and a half years--known each other for five. Tommy's 20, Wilbur's nearly 28, and they're still playing the part of best friends for all the world to see.

He takes a deep breath and raises his hand to press against where the ring is resting on his chest, and he catches Wilbur watching him with a bittersweet smile. He sees Wilbur touch his chest and reminds himself that this is all he needs.

Tommy doesn't need the world to know he loves Wilbur, he just needs Wilbur to know, and that's enough.

They film the vlog, and by the end Tommy feels like he's run a marathon. He'd spent the entire video paranoid. What if I say something? What if the ring falls out? What if someone notices? What if--

"Toms," Wilbur had said in a moment of down time when the cameras weren't pointed at them, squeezing his shoulder a bit. He hadn't needed to say any more, the fond, encouraging look conveying all Wilbur could have wanted to say.

It had grounded Tommy enough to make a half decent video, but nowhere near enough to stop him from collapsing onto the couch the second they make it back to their home.

Wilbur collapses right next to him, and like clockwork they drift into each other's orbits, leaning and tangling hands and tilting heads until they find a comfortable, steady space to share.

"Didn't realize how much harder it would be," Tommy says after he's had a chance to recharge.

"I'm sorry," Wilbur says and Tommy scoffs.

"Not your fault big man, we agreed to keep it quiet together . It's shitty, but we chose it as a unit."

Wilbur hums in mild agreement. This is an argument they've had more than once.

"I love you," Tommy turns his head and Wilbur meets him in a brief, relaxed kiss.

"Yeah?" Wilbur grins, and Tommy grins back.

"Yeah, fiancee."

A pleased flush paints Wilbur's face and he holds Tommy tighter again, "I love you, too, and I want to marry you no matter what it takes."

The ferocity in Wilbur's voice surprises him and he blinks up at the man who doesn't soften, only looks down at Tommy with those determined eyes that Tommy had fallen in love with.

"What I mean," Wilbur clarifies, "is that I'm not going to let anything or anyone--our friends, our audiences, the band--come between the promise I made to you when I gave you that ring."

Tommy wonders how he got so lucky as he looks into the eyes of a man who loves him completely.

"You better fucking not," Tommy says, and Wilbur laughs.

After that they turn on something to watch and lay together until Tommy finally breaks the silence again.

"I've been thinking."

"Mm, a dangerous thing," Wilbur says.

"Shut up," Tommy's smile doesn't last long as he sobers for the rest of his thought.

"I know we were thinking we'd tell everyone before we, y'know, got married," Tommy pauses, "But what if we didn't?"

Wilbur frowns, "Like eloped?"

"Kind of," Tommy furrows his brow, "We can still have the ceremony and shit when everyone's in the know, but we'd get the certificate just you and me."

Wilbur is quiet for a while, and it makes Tommy fidget in his arms.

"I'm not saying I'm against it," Wilbur begins cautiously, "But why?"

Tommy hums, picking at the edge of Wilbur's sweaters, "There's going to be people who don't like it."

"Yes," Wilbur says, a sad sort of resignation in his voice.

"There's going to be people who don't like it at the wedding ," Tommy clarifies, "There's no way we weed out everyone, and I--"

"Don't want them to ruin it," Wilbur finishes, and Tommy nods.

"This is ours," He says firmly, "No one else gets to say if we have it or not, and I just thought that maybe the best way to show that is to actually do it ourselves. They can celebrate with us, but they don't get to choose this."

"Okay."

Tommy blinks in surprise, "What?"

Wilbur shrugs, "Okay. You're right. Why the hell not? Philza Minecraft might kill us, and your mum definitely will, but hey," He grins, "When have we shied away from a little risky living?"

"Cool," Tommy says, still looking mildly stunned that it was that easy.

"Cool," Wilbur echoes, more amused.

They watch the rest of the film, and Tommy pulls out his phone, studying something on the screen as Wilbur puts the popcorn bowl in the sink. When he turns back Tommy looks either nervous or excited (Wilbur's not too sure there's a difference between the two).

"What?"

"What about tomorrow morning?"

Wilbur laughs and Tommy laughs too, and he pulls his fiancee into another kiss, this time fighting to press their lips together through smiles.

"Alright. Tomorrow."

----

They sign the papers, Wilbur drags Tommy into a dizzying kiss that tells the story of a year and a half of love, and when it's done Tommy feels exactly the same and entirely changed all at once.

"Thomas Gold," Wilbur says with reverence, and Tommy thinks he'll never get tired of hearing his new name, "I love you."

Tommy grins, "Till death do us fucking part."

"Till death do us fucking part," Will agrees, and they walk out hand in hand.

----

Wilbur carries Tommy through their front door, bridal style. Tommy complains loudly, but if the hint of a smile on his face is any indication, he likes it as much as Wilbur does.

He likes it even more when Wilbur continues to carry him the short distance to their bedroom, drops him on the bed with a laugh, and fucks him like this is the last time he'll ever get the chance.

"Y'know, this is the start of a life long partnership," Tommy huffs afterwards, boneless and a bit out of breath, "You could have taken it slow."

Wilbur laughs, but he's as exhausted as Tommy, flat on his back looking equally fucked out.

"Fuck slow. It doesn't matter how many years we get. I'll always want more," He drops his head to the side to look at Tommy who's already watching him with blue eyes full of fondness, "I think I could live a dozen lifetimes with you and never get tired of those eyes."

Tommy rolls said eyes, and his cheeks flush.

"Shut up," He huffs, "Fuckin sap."

"We got married today," Wilbur argues, grinning, "If I get to be a sap on any day it's today."

That shuts Tommy up for a few minutes, the both of them basking in the afterglow.

"Will?"

"Mhm?"

"Say it again," Tommy asks softly.

Will tilts his head, "Say what?"

"My name," Tommy almost sounds shy as he requests it, but Wilbur drags him into his arms and presses a kiss to his hair.

"Which one?" Wilbur muses, "Mr. Gold? Thomas Gold? Tom Gold? Tommy Gold?--"

Tommy tucks his face into Wilbur's shoulder and makes an embarrassed sound.

Will stops with a chuckle, and when the noise quiets down Wilbur threads his fingers through Tommy's hair in a comforting, methodical rhythm.

"Or maybe I should just call you mine," Wilbur says with a gentle confidence that makes a shiver run down Tommy's spine.

"For the rest of our lives, Toms," Will says, "It's you and me. You're stuck with me now."

Tommy smiles against his skin, and Wilbur feels more then hears the reply.

"Damn right."

----

For a few weeks after that life is dripping in honeymoon bliss.

They can hardly keep their hands off each other--Tommy thinks they easily double their number of "near exposure" experiences within days of signing the marriage papers.

Part of him wants to get caught. Say to hell with it and let the secret get thrown into the open just to have it done with, but he knows he'd regret it. This is something to be done properly, and--after nearly 3 months--they're finally ready to do it.

Tommy squeezes Wilbur's hand who takes a deep breath and squeezes back before letting go to pull a chain out from under his shirt.

"Shall we then?" Wilbur asks, and Tommy pulls his ring off his necklace as well.

"You know," Tommy says, "It was useful, but I never want to use this fucking chain again."

Wilbur laughs, "I'll take that as a yes."

Tommy lets Wilbur slide the subtle but jeweled ring onto his finger, only complaining about the dramatics of it all a bit before doing the same to Will. They share a nervous smile before grabbing their coats and walking out the door--they have a meetup to get to.

----

It takes 30 nerve-wracking minutes for anyone to comment on the rings.

"Will," Phil interrupts the conversation with furrowed brows, "What's up with the new ring, mate?"

Wilbur stills before lowering the glass in his hand back down to the counter. He raises a brow.

"Well, it's a gold band on my left ring finger I think it's fairly obvious--"

"You're engaged?" Phil blurts, and a spark of mischief dances in Wilbur's eyes.

"No."

Phil deflates, "Thank fucking God I would have killed you."

"I'm married."

The kitchen goes dead silent, Niki and Jack who had stopped their conversation as soon as Phil had started talking stare, blank and stunned. Phil stares at Wilbur, desperately looking for any sign of a lie.

"Bullshit."

Wilbur laughs, "It's not! I can show you the papers. We brought them."

"Bull fucking shit," Phil shakes his head, "There's no fucking way--"

"We?" Niki interrupts, and Will turns his attention to her. She swallows.

"You said 'we brought them.'"

Wilbur hums, "I did."

They all hang on his words, waiting for an answer to the unspoken question, but Wilbur just takes a slow drink to hide his smile.

Before Phil can demand answers, the kitchen door swings open.

"Will, are you done hiding or--woah, you've got a weird fuckin energy in here," Tommy stops at Wilbur's side and looks at the stunned group, "I can't decide it they're confused, angry, or scared. The fuck did you say to them?"

Wilbur grins, "Nothing really. Phil just noticed my ring is all."

Tommy freezes up for a moment before a smile spreads across his face. He looks to Phil.

"Did he fucking tell you that he picked it out? Because that's bullshit--"

"It is not ," Wilbur bristles.

" I picked it out like 6 fuckin months before he even proposed and he just copied--"

"Why the fuck would you pick out Will's wedding ring?" Phil asks desperately, and Tommy almost wants to take pity on him.

"Phil, mate, I know you're getting old, but you're not this thick," Tommy says, and Phil's eyes dart down to Tommy's left hand that has an identical gold ring around it.

The strangled sound that leaves Phil's mouth followed by the choked gasp from Niki is far more satisfying then it should be.

Wilbur grins, "Surprise?"

"Please tell me this isn't for a vlog," Jack says.

"No! No, fuck no," Tommy laughs, "No this is all real."

"You're married," Phil says.

"Yup."

"To each other," He continues.

"I certainly hope so."

"What the fuck," He finishes, and Wilbur's grin turns a bit nervous.

"Ah, it's a bit of a long story."

"We've got all fucking night," Niki says, and Tommy nods.

"Well, we're not doing this in the kitchen," Tommy claps his hands, "Besides, Toby and Ranboo are on the couch and I only want to explain this once tonight."

He ushers their still shocked friends into the next room, Wilbur trailing behind him as they all get situated.

Toby and Ranboo look up, confused, and Tommy jumps to explain.

"We've got a bit of an announcement," He says, "Thought we'd get everyone together and do it in one go."

Wilbur takes a seat, and Tommy plops down beside him. This time neither of them pretend to have boundaries, Wilbur draping his arm over Tommy and Tommy leaning in to the touch, hand fiddling with a hole in Wilbur's jeans.

It's a wonder no one guessed earlier considering how not subtle the pair are.

"Long story short, Will and I are married."

Toby laughs, but when everyone else in the room stays silent the laughter fades.

"Wait, really?" He says, eyes wide.

Tommy holds up his hand so Toby can see the ring, "Yup."

"Like, romantically?" Toby asks incredulously, and Tommy rolls his eyes.

He turns, hooks his fingers in the collar of Wilbur's shirt, and drags him down into a quick kiss before shoving the surprised man back who shakes his head and stares at Tommy fondly.

"You could have warned me," He says.

"Alright," Tommy snarks, "I'm going to kiss you now."

He pulls Wilbur down again, but this time Wilbur gets a hand on the back of his neck before he can shove him away. He tilts his head and draws Tommy into a longer, less messy kiss before letting him pull back.

Tommy blinks away the fog that had already blurred his thoughts and scowls at Wilbur's self satisfied smile. He turns back to Toby, ignoring the chuckle from behind him.

"Does that answer your question?"

"I…" Toby's eyes dart between them for a few seconds, "Yeah. I guess it fucking does. Jesus Christ, Tommy.

"How long has this been happening?" Phil jumps in, and both Wilbur and Tommy shrink a little.

Phil narrows his eyes, "It better have been after Tommy turned 18."

Wilbur grimaces, "...In my defense, I did try and tell him no."

"Will!"

"Oh lay off him. He wanted to wait, and I practically bullied the bitch into it," Tommy waves off Phil's concern, "Look. I was 17 and a half, we'd been dancing around it for months. I'm fucking impatient okay?"

"He was a minor--"

"Phil," Tommy snaps, forcing the man to break his accusing stare at Will and look at him before he lifts his chin and aims a challenging look at each member of the room.

"If any of you have problems with me and Will's relationship, you can kindly fuck off. We didn't have to tell you guys jack shit, but we've trusted you anyway. Don't be a bitch about it."

"Toms," Wilbur chides gently, and Tommy huffs but sinks back into Will's hold, "They're just a little shocked. Give them a chance to ease into it before you rip their throats out."

The room descends into an awkward silence until Ranboo speaks up.

"To be honest, looking back it seems kind of obvious," He gestures to the pair of them, "I mean, when have Tommy and Will ever been even remotely subtly about their obsession with each other."

"That's… that's fair," Phil admits, "They have always been a bit… more ."

"Wait," Toby cuts in, and Tommy takes one look at the impulsive look on his face and braces himself, "Does this mean you lost your virginity and didn't fucking tell me?"

Tommy's face burns as he sputters defensively, "What did you want me to say?"

"I don't know!" Toby scowls, "Maybe, hey I'm fucking one of mutual friends and oh yeah we're getting married?"

"Well, technically he wasn't fucking me," Wilbur cuts in and Tommy whips around, betrayed, "So if you put it that way he didn't really lie--"

"And you're a fucking bottom," Toby sighs, "Why am I not surprised?"

"Oi! Like you're one to talk--"

"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" Toby says, and Tommy points at Ranboo.

"Look me in the eyes and tell me this man has not fucked you."

Toby's jaw drops, and Ranboo jolts. They stare like deer in the headlights at Tommy.

Tommy raises a brow, "Well?"

"I fucking hate you," Toby's face is burning almost as much as Tommy's is, and that seems to satisfy the slighted man.

"That's what I thought."

"Can we go back to the married thing, please? Because I'm still trying to process that," Niki says, dragging the group's attention back.

Wilbur nods, "As Tommy said, we got together when he was 17, dated for two and a half years. I proposed a couple weeks after he turned 20."

"We were gonna stay engaged and tell everyone before the wedding," Tommy jumps in, "But I said fuck that two weeks into engagement, and we went to a court and signed the papers the next morning."

"So here we are," Wilbur finishes, an unconscious smile working its way onto his face, "Mr. And Mr. Gold, at your service."

"We're still going to have a proper wedding though," Tommy tacks on, "Yknow, one for you guys and our families and everything, but we're saving that for after we let the fans know."

"So you do plan on coming out publicly then," Phil says.

"Yeah. We debated for a bit," Wilbur says, "But in the end it's exhausting to hide, and with so many people involved the odds of it leaking anyway are too high. Figured we might as well control the narrative."

"People won't like it," Phil purses his lips, "You sure you want that?"

"For Tommy?" Will says, looking Phil in the eyes, "Absolutely."

"Same here," Tommy adds, "Fuck the rest of the world. I chose Will and he chose me. That's what matters."

Phil scrutinizes the pair for a few more seconds before nodding, "Well, then I guess a congratulations is due."

Tension they hadn't known they were holding drains from Will and Tommy. Phil's approval--however tentative--had been one of the most nerve-racking parts of tonight.

"Thank you, Phil," Wilbur says softly, and it holds the weight of a man ready to lose one of his closest friends if it meant keeping his best one.

----

The rest of the night passes in a flurry of questions and stories and playful teasing, and Tommy feels the weight of a two year secret finally drop off his back and melt into a pair of wings that he wants to use to drag Wilbur into the air then fall with him all over again.

It's crazy and terrifying and absolutely perfect.
