Work Text:
“I still can’t believe I’m stuck with you.” Childe says as they walk to the open deck of their ship. The cool wind blows his hair as he gazes toward their destination. Liyue’s port looks crowded and full of liveliness, even with their distance.
“That should be my line, little Tartaglia.” Signora scoffs. Her heels make subtle tapping sounds on the iron flooring. “I don’t understand why you are the one who is sent along with me. Capitano or Pulcinella would’ve been a better choice.”
“Are you implying that I won’t be able to reign in the alpha?” The Eleventh Harbinger comments idly, but the hidden threat under his tone isn’t unnoticed.
Signora gives him a cynical look. “More like I can’t be bothered with an additional dead weight. I already have to keep the omegas in check, but now I also have to keep an eye on the alphas and you during the whole event.”
“Just do your job and don’t bother me, Signora.” Childe rolls his eyes. “If anything, it’s you who likes to orchestrate something behind the scenes.”
“You’re hardly a worthy pawn to be used.” Signora replies and crosses her hands on her chest.
“For your information, I’m actually busy in Snezhnaya. Out of all eleven of us, why must it be you. Capitano must’ve been out of his mind.” Childe grumbles under his breath and shakes his head.
“Then who?” Signora snorts. “Scara? The ship would’ve sunk before it reached Liyue with how easily he riles you up.”
“At least he’s not a pretentious bitch-” Childe stops his insult when he notices an agent, his third in command to be exact, is approaching them.
“My Lord, my Lady, we are approaching the port. The estimation of the docking process is twenty to half an hour.” He bows politely.
“Thanks Nick.” Childe dismisses before turning to face the Eighth. “Don’t you need to prepare yourself, Principessa?” He sarcastically says.
“With a face like me? Hardly.” Signora tosses her hair to the back haughtily. “I’ll round up the omegas. Gather the alphas, Tartaglia.” She orders before walking away from him.
“I don’t take orders from you.” Childe says annoyedly.
“And oh, remind them to keep their manner and attitude in check. We’re carrying Her Highness’ name after all. You too, darling.” She smiles viciously, completely ignoring his previous jab before turning to the left.
Childe makes a disgusted face as his third in command appears again beside him with his outer coat. “I’ve told an attendant to pack up the rest of your things, my Lord.”
“Thank you, Nick.” Childe sighs as he lets his subordinate help him draping the coat on his shoulder. He checks to make sure it won’t fall off before he turns to him again. “It’s been a hellish week, isn’t it?” He asks him.
Nickolas only smiles diplomatically. “Lady Signora is an amazing woman, but we’re eternally grateful that we serve under my Lord.”
Childe amusedly chuckles. “You should know by now a compliment won’t get you anywhere with me, Nick.” He teases.
“It doesn’t hurt to try, my Lord.” Nick charmingly says as he follows his Lord to the alphas’ area.
Childe only laughs heartily. “You really should join in the alphas’ entourage, Nick. You’ll become the prime target of the omegas at the balls with how smooth you are.”
“I should tone down my charms until we return to Snezhnaya then, my Lord.” Nick replies collectedly.
Childe snickers.

Teyvat Grand Balls.
An occasion where a nation will host a grand gathering between all the other nations of Teyvat. Each nation will send some of its eligible, noble or highly looked-up alpha and omega as representatives from that nation. They will mingle and attend the four weeks event as a sign of peace. It will be great if any alpha or omega can establish diplomatic or even romantic relationships with other nations’.
Since there will be a handful of omega and alpha for each nation, they will be sent along with two emissaries. One to keep the alpha’s entourage in check and another to protect the omega’s entourage.
For this year, he’s the one who’s selected as the alpha’s guardian.
Out of nowhere too.
The last time he heard from Capitano, it was Dottore who was supposed to be in attendance. So imagine his surprise when he received the official letter of order from Her Highness to be the emissary instead.
It’s not like he can’t control the alpha per se. He’s titled as the Eleventh Harbinger, the youngest Harbinger for a reason after all. All the alphas regard him highly despite his secondary gender and he can easily beat their asses to submission, so there’s no problem on that part either.
It’s just… weird.
Very weird.
Capitano isn’t the type to change his plan midway like this, unless Her Highness personally requested it. Even then, why?
Why must it be him?
It’s been niggling at the back of his mind. But with Capitano already being dispatched to the other end of Snezhnaya when he received the order, he didn't manage to ask him.
Childe’s musing is broken when a faint, flowery scent invades his sense of smell. “So you are dolling yourself for the past five minutes.” He comments lowly as the bridge is finally put down and their respective third in command come down first.
“It’s better than smelling like a bunch of alphas.” Signora says instead as she circles her arm on his. “Be a doll and smile, Tartaglia. Or I will purposefully step on you with my heels.”
“Terrifying.” Childe mockingly says. Despite all of their bickering, he still gently leads the female omega to descend on the slippery bridge.
“Lord Tartaglia and Lady Signora.” A fair looking woman in her mid twenties bows her head politely. “Welcome to Liyue. My name is Baixhi and I will be your guide during your stay in Liyue. I hope your journey was a smooth one?” She asks politely.
“It was, thank you Baixhi.” Signora answers.
“I’m glad to hear that.” Baixhi nods. “Shall we proceed to your designated place?” She offers.
Childe takes a brief look at his third in command, who nods dutifully. “That’d be excellent.” He offers his hand again to Signora, who nods approvingly and takes his hand.
“May I confirm something beforehand, Lord Tartaglia?” Baixhi says. “We prepared a room for Lord Tartaglia in both alpha and omega’s floors. Which room would you prefer?” She asks professionally.
“Ah, I’ll stay at the alpha’s. I’m still their guardian after all.” Childe answers calmly.
“As you wish, my Lord.” Baixhi bows lightly. “Then shall we?”
.
.
“There will be an informal gathering at tonight's dinner for the emissaries, while the opening ceremony will be held in the evening tomorrow.” Baixhi calmly informs them. “There will be numerous maids and staff of ours in each building, so please feel free to inform them if you have any requests or need anything.” She continues as she hands them a booklet.
While Childe lets Signora deal with the technicalities and things, he lets his eyes wander around the building that’s exclusively assigned to them. It’s not too big or too small, just right for a medium sized group. A little bit far from the -what he assumes- as Lord Morax’s main palace, but it’s serene and looks decently decorated from the outside.
“And also, for everyone’s comfort and safety, please don’t forget to put these brooches whenever any of you are going out.” The young woman then hands them a medium sized, jewelry box. “It’ll serve as a pass to go in and out the Palace, as well as a form of identification. I hope Lord Tartaglia and Lady Signora can be understanding about this.” She bows deeply.
From the corner of his eyes, he can see how Signora’s expression turns into a deeply irritated one and he quickly interjects, “It’s okay, we understand.”
“Thank you, my Lord, my Lady.” Baixhi says. “I hope you’ll enjoy your stay with us for the next four weeks.”
Childe hums as he plops down to the soft and plush sofa. His eyes sweep around the area.
The first floor functions as the communal floor, with an open lounge area with numerous sofas and chairs, an open kitchen and a huge dining area that will also lead directly to a beautiful looking backyard. There are also several empty bedrooms for their private attendants and servants. The second floor serves as the omega’s housing while the third floor is meant for the alpha’s. They’ve mostly settled down and their young entourages are busy packing off and familiarizing themselves with their respective rooms.
All in all, it’s a pretty decent place, Liyue isn’t the wealthiest nation for nothing it seems.
When he hears the familiar click clack, he turns his head upward. “You’re the one who will attend tonight’s dinner.” Childe says as soon as Signora is within his vision.
“And let you scott-free for the rest of the night?” Signora scoffs disbelievingly as she takes a seat across from him. Like him, the Eighth Harbinger has changed into something more comfortable, but definitely more lavish than him.
Typical Signora.
“I’m going to scour the area.” He refutes her accusation while waving the booklet. “Regardless of the good diplomatic relation between Her Highness and Lord Morax, I’d like to be on the safe side. This is the only chance we get while they’re still busy tending to other nations.”
Signora calculatively stares at him. “Fine. Don’t get lost, Tartaglia.” She warns him.
“Aw, so you are worried about me.” Childe mocks as he stands up.
“Your hallucination is getting worse, little Tarta. Should I match you to an alpha too while we’re here?” She says with a fake pity on her face.
Childe only gives her a middle finger before leaving her all alone.
.
.
That night, when Signora comes into her room she immediately notices the folder paper under her heels.
“The layout is exactly like the map. The red marks are the guarded entrance. Inform your own men.”
She scoffs condescendingly, before burning the piece of paper with her lighter.
If her men can’t check it by themselves, then she has no use of them.
Emperor’s Imperial Palace
06.10 AM
“Xiao, you’ve arrived.” Zhongli indulgently greets as the green haired alpha joins him in his private pavilion.
Xiao bows deeply at him. “Your Imperial Majesty.”
“Sit. You haven’t had your breakfast, right?” Zhongli waves to his attendant, who is already halfway preparing a new plate for the young noble.
“Thank you for the gracious offer, Your Majesty but I'll just have tea.” Xiao bows again, before seating himself.
Zhongli sighs. “I’ve told you to be at ease with me.”
Xiao only nods obediently. An attendant delicately put down a cup of steaming fresh tea in front of him and he thanks her quietly.
“Have you greeted your future mate? Aether, isn’t it?” Zhongli asks as takes the last bite of his breakfast. He watches in amusement how his distantly-related nephew is slowly turning red at the mention of Celestia’s young prince. “I was informed that their envoy has arrived last night.”
“It’s only right that I come to greet you first.” Xiao replies.
“We should meet them after this then. There’s no need to wait until the opening ceremony, since both of you are already acquainted with each other.” Zhongli laughs heartily.
“Thank you for your generosity, Master.” The green haired alpha says modestly.
The purebred alpha smiles fondly at the old nickname. It’s been years since he trained Xiao, but the title still stuck until now. It’s somehow nostalgic, how little Xiao has turned into a young adult, ready to take someone’s hand to be his future mate.
“I pray that your courting will be successful, Xiao.” The Emperor of Liyue says before he stands up. While Xiao is already of age, it’ll be more proper if he shows up with him as his guardian, with both of Xiao’s parents already gone. It’ll cement Xiao’s position over whoever’s chasing after the young prince’s hands as well, so his courtship should run more smoothly with the famously protective Celestia’s guardian.
“Let’s go meet my future nephew-in-law.”
.
.
He and Xiao are walking along the corridor of the second floor while chatting idly when they notice someone is using the training ground. He can’t see his face clearly due to the angle and their distance, but he’s definitely a foreigner.
“Is he one of the guests?” Xiao voices up curiously.
“Perhaps.” Zhongli answers. He continues to observe the series of movements from the young man as they walk.
His form is beautiful.
There’s no unneeded sway or excessive power. Each slash and hit is very on point and lethal. To think that he manages to balance that while using two blades in his hands is very fascinating too.
A true warrior.
It’ll be a delight to have a spar with him.
“Master?”
His musing is broken when he hears Xiao’s confused voice. It seems that in his trance, he has stayed rooted to his position.
“I apologize, Xiao. Let’s continue our walk.” Zhongli says appeasingly as he hastens his pace.
He takes a last, curious peek on the orange-brownish haired man.
Interesting.
He didn’t see such hair color at the emissaries’ dinner last night. There are a few people who were absent so it doesn’t cross the chance that he’s an emissary, but he could be one of the alpha’s envoys too.
Mayhaps he can meet him again tonight.
Snezhnaya’s Temporary Residence
06.30 PM
Signora gives him a very obvious, very purposefully condescending up and down look. “Are you really going into the ball like that?”
The Eleventh Harbinger only shrugs. “I’m here to take care of our people.”
“There’s no rule saying the emissary can’t look for a promising partner.” Signora crosses her hands in distaste.
“I never say I intend to search for one.” Childe replies. “It’s a decent outfit, Signora. Don’t act as if I’m wearing shitty clothing.” He huffs annoyedly. He’s wearing a three piece, figure-fitting black suit with some dash of red, with some chain accessories. Unlike other male omega in his entourage, he chooses to bury his lean waist within the thick fabric of his suit.
This outfit is up to the standard of someone with his title and caliber.
“You’re painfully naïve, Tartaglia. Isn’t it obvious that Her Highness is subtly ordering you to find someone?” Signora frowns. “I know you can be so oblivious, but not this stupid.”
Childe blinks in surprise as he stops meddling with his cufflinks.
“It’s impossible.” He immediately denies. Signora might also be suspicious about his sudden appointment, but to find a mate, really? “Unlike you, Her Highness doesn’t like to be privy about our personal lives and I’m still a Duke. International relationships will just put me at a disadvantage.” He points out reasonably.
Signora shrugs. Her long dress flows along elegantly with her movement. “You just need someone with a lower status so they’ll be the one who follows you instead.”
Childe rolls his eyes. “I don’t want to be with someone weak.”
“Most alphas are weak in your eyes. Is it not the reason why you reject every noble alpha in our nation?” Signora scoffs disbelievingly.
“Find me an alpha who won’t get their asses beaten by me in a minute then. Or maybe someone whose ego won’t get bruised then lash out pettily when it becomes apparent that they’re inferior to me.” Childe raises his eyebrow challengingly.
“At this rate, you should get betrothed to the other Harbingers and be done with it.” Signora points her fingers irritatedly.
“My life isn’t yours to meddle in. Why are we discussing my personal choice?” Childe retorts back.
The female omega sighs tiredly, as if she’s dealing with a little child. “Your suit is far too simple and plain. It doesn’t accentuate your figure, it also won’t attract any attention or anyone’s understanding that you’re an omega unless they’re standing right next to you.”
“As I said before, I’m here to herd our alphas and help them to smooth things out if they find someone. Nothing more and nothing less than that.” He firmly says.
“Suit yourself. If you catch Her Highness’ ire and disappointment when you come back without a promising courtship at your hand, don’t come crying at me.”
Imperial Main Ball
08.00 PM
Sometimes, Zhongli wishes that he’s not the head of the Morax Clan, which makes him the current Emperor of Liyue. It’s not that he’s ungrateful or something. His knowledge, skills and lineage literally call for it and he’s unexpectedly very good at it. He fully realizes that he’s meant for this position, but once in a while, he dislikes being His Imperial Majesty.
Had you asked anyone within Liyue’s palace, anyone would’ve said that he likes mingling with his people. He upholds the basic etiquette as an Emperor of the nation when the situation calls for it, but it’s not uncommon to see him blending in with his subjects, even the commoners. He likes talking and exchanging words and thoughts, even if it’s just for something trivial, for he believes there’s some kind of lesson and knowledge even in the smallest thing.
However, he’d rather talk with a wall than enduring this for another hour. Hell, talking with his faithful subjects and people is far more enjoyable than this.
The current Emperor can only hide his sigh as another group of old, purists alpha is “introduced” to him yet again by one of the Qixing’s ministers. Instead of having educated or entertaining conversations, they are just clamoring to get a word or two about their omega daughters or nieces.
Zhongli acutely knows that these people, his subjects, even the foreign emissaries, are excited for his presence. He rarely, (almost never) attends these galas that his nobles seem to throw almost every month. Mostly because he’s too busy and everytime he attends, his time will mostly be used to dodge power, money hungry nobles who will try to tie their families to him. It’s tiring enough to deal with only the nobles of Liyue, and now he has to deal with eight nations in Teyvat.
Not to mention, his court of advisors have been hounding him to look for a mate. It’s time to hear the pitter patter of small steps in the Golden House, they said.
Ridiculous.
He has no desire to sire children with just anyone, especially with someone incompetent. A good family background isn’t enough for him. He needs someone who can stand by his side, someone who won’t cower under him or blindly worship him. Someone with wits and strength, able to protect themselves and their future offsprings with or without his help. Someone who can actually fight and also likes his hobbies for art and performance will be a greater preference for him.
Those things, without a doubt, are very hard requirements. The female omegas in his nations are raised to be strong, but they’re still delicate and soft. He only knows a handful of female omegas who can defend themselves with martial arts, even rarer for someone with actual wits and enough knowledge to keep up with him in combination.
The male omegas are even rarer beings.
Zhongli really tries to be understanding, but his usually never ending patience is already grated thin after an hour into this nonsense.
Shouldn’t these people try to befriend other nations' alphas instead of him? Shouldn’t his subjects promote their own alpha’s younglings too?
He surreptitiously sweeps his eyes for help and sighs internally when he sees someone he can latch onto.
“I’m afraid that I need to talk to Ganyu about some matters.” Zhongli politely says. “Do enjoy the ball.” He ends before turning around and walks toward the young girl.
“Ganyu.” Zhongli greets as he matches his pace with her.
“Your Imperial Majesty!” She greets in surprise and stops her walk. “What can I do for you, Your Majesty?” She asks concernedly.
“I needed a means to escape earlier.” Zhongli admits.
Understanding dawns on her and she smiles in return. “Should I ask the attendant to announce your departure?” She kindly asks as she leads them to the edge of the room.
Before he can confirm, he catches a familiar orange-brownish hair from the corner of his eyes. Just like this morning, he sees him all alone, leaning on the pillar on the edge of the room with a glass of wine in his hand. Based on the height of the liquid, it’s clear to him that the young man hasn’t taken the littlest sip from it. As if it’s just a mere decoration or image he put up.
Completely alert, he hushedly asks her. “Ganyu, who is that?” He lifts his chin up to the direction of the unknown man.
“That’s…” Ganyu frowns in an effort to remember. “If I’m not mistaken, he’s the alpha escort for the Snezhnaya’s envoy. I think this is his first time attending the event.”
“He’s an alpha?” Zhongli turns his head fully to Ganyu. Curious wonder blooms in his mind. He also initially thought that he’s an alpha based on what he saw this morning, but now that he can see his face fully, doubts fill him. While the man’s stature is not petite or lean like most omega, but his face is a bit too soft to be considered as alpha. However, he doesn’t exude a soft, calming aura like an omega, but rather, charismatic bold confidence of an alpha.
Ganyu shakes her head in uncertainty. “I’m sorry but I’m not sure either, Your Majesty.”
“It’s okay, thank you Ganyu.” He says calmly.
Could it be because of his clothing? He mulls. The three piece suit looks more on the thicker side than soft and thin-like that it doesn’t accentuate his waist and body. There’s also the interesting fact that he’s an alpha’s guardian. To be appointed as one, they must have absolute authority and be able to subdue them if something happened. His performance this morning must truly not be for show.
This man is a walking contradiction and Zhongli is intrigued.
No longer bored out of his mind, he surreptitiously glances once in a while at the unknown ginger haired man. He effortlessly deals with the parents of omegas of age from his nation who boldly approaches him, but his mind is completely focused on the Snezhnaya’s emissary. Just like Ganyu said, the young man mostly engages between his alpha entourages and other guests, occasionally subtly pointing his roster to the hopeful, unmated omegas in the room.
So that’s why he chooses to stay at the edge like that, Zhongli thinks with approval in his mind. It gives him a wide berth of the room’s view and he’ll be able to navigate his people far better than being in the middle of the room.
At this show of wise judgment, his interest is piqued even more.
He has to have a chat with him before the night ends.
But first, he needs to deal with these hopeful parents first.
Childe sighs as he takes a breather on the empty balcony. Tonight’s ball is still halfway going on and he’s already drained. He thought that once he’s dressed like an alpha, it’ll keep others at bay.
But how terribly mistaken he is.
An hour into the dance, more people begin to realize his true nature as an omega and some of the officials from other nations’ begin to relentlessly pursue him. Despite the fact that he’s shown clear disinterest, many cocky alphas are still hot on his tails, even going as far as trying to pressure him with their pheromone.
Fuckers. He can put them on the ground with his eyes closed and he’s definitely a bad match for them if they think they can easily manipulate him with such a cheap move.
He lets out another sigh as he leans his chin on the railing and closes his eyes. He’s sure that barely five minutes passed by, when his nose picked up a pleasant scent and soon followed with barely audible steps behind him. Sighing in annoyance, Childe turns his body to drive out whoever it is.
.
.
Zhongli watches amusingly how the young man is startled to see him before recovering quickly. He bows and greets him politely.
“Is the ball not to your liking?” He kindly asks as he stands beside him. His eyes are focused on the vast view of the city he’s so proud of.
“It’s an excellent party, Your Majesty.” The young man says humbly. “I just needed some breather. I will excuse myself to let you rest in peace.” He bows again.
“Oh, if you don’t mind please do accompany me.” Zhongli immediately says. “It is rather dull to be alone on this fine night.”
“If that’s what you wish for, Your Majesty.” He says.
“It is.” Zhongli nods approvingly.
Rather awkward silence descends between them and Zhongli initiates the conversation. “Based on the brooch, you’re an emissary from Snezhnaya and yet, I don’t think I saw you last night.” He purposefully sweeps his eyes on him for more finer detail. Standing this close to the young man gives him the confirmation that he is an omega based on his faint scent.
“I apologize. It’s very rude of me to not introduce myself earlier.” He bows. “I’m Tartaglia, the Eleventh Harbingers of Snezhnaya, Your Majesty. I’m one of the emissaries Her Highness Tsaritsa has appointed along with Lady Signora.” He demurely says.
“You’re a Harbinger, Sir Tartaglia?” Zhongli asks curiously. As far as he knows, Tsaritsa’s Harbingers consist of the best of the best. The cream of the crop of noble Snezhnayan bloodline.
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Tartaglia confirms.
“Remarkable.” Zhongli earnestly praises. “You look so young yet you’ve achieved a great feat like no others.”
“Thank you for your high praise, Your Majesty.” Tartaglia replies.
It’s not lost in him how Tartaglia takes pride in his title. Humble enough to be polite, but he knows his worth and refuses to bend for a flimsy image of humility.
“You have such a beautiful city, Your Majesty.” Tartaglia says earnestly in response. “It’s still bustling with liveliness even at this hour.”
“We can be as prosperous as now because of their hard work.” Zhongli nods. “They’re part of the prime carrier of the economy’s wheel in Liyue.”
“But it also means that your people have enough to spend on the daily.” Tartaglia says. “It shows you’re a wise ruler. Everyone has enough to spend their money and do well in their respective roles.”
“An equivalent co-existence.” Zhongli hums. “Then, please tell me your opinion, Sir Tartaglia. Can you see those lotus flowers?” He points to a small pond in the garden that can be seen from their height. “Do you think they have a purpose? They do nothing but simply exist in their place. They live on the water but they do not give anything in return, unlike a normal plant who can give compost and transfer the oxygen we all need to survive.” He tests him. There isn’t a right or wrong answers, but depends on his response, it can give him an insight about the young omega beside him.
Tartaglia is silent for a while, before he opens his mouth. “It’s because their role doesn’t exist for its ecosystem, but rather in a bigger picture of life.”
“Can you elaborate on that, Sir Tartaglia?” Zhongli probes.
“A lotus flower is a beautiful flower. It brings serenity and peace upon anyone who gaze on it. Is it not enough?” Tartaglia says. “What’s so bad about being a beautiful decoration that can bring tranquility and peace? They have served its purpose. If seeing a lotus flower can bring ease to anyone who sees it, then it’ll improve their mental health. An improved mental health means a more sound, decision making process and thoughts. A good decision and way of thinking can bring prosperity and advantages which attract wealth. With wealth, a person can afford to have more things or more people to be hired. Which also means the flower’s existence will be secured. I believe everything is interconnected and there’s no such thing as ‘no purpose’ in life.”
“I didn’t expect such a detailed answer, but I second your belief, Sir Tartaglia. You’re very informed on the matter.” Zhongli muses approvingly. A smile comes by when he sees how the omega in front of him flusters for a second before he’s composed once again.
“Thank you, Your Majesty. It seems my preparation in philosophy is coming to fruition.” He lightly jests.
“Of course. But I believe it’s due to Sir Tartaglia’s own prolificacy. I can name at least three people with the same knowledge yet not understanding it at all.” Zhongli continues. “Had these people possessed half of equal amounts of your prowess, perhaps we’ll not have resorted to escape like this.” He sighs ruefully.
“I’ve heard things about you, Your Majesty, but I believe a smooth talker is not one of them.” Tartaglia cheekily says.
Zhongli raises his eyebrow with an amused smile on his face. Tartaglia’s omegan side should’ve cowered in submission in the presence of a purebred alpha, yet, this emissary, Tartaglia, not only managed to carry a proper conversation with wits, he even has the confidence to stand equally and even tease him. An omega with an obvious noble upbringing, strong and intelligent with unexpectedly deep insight, brave with a dash of recklessness and cheeks. His confidence must’ve stemmed from the fact that he’s a strong fighter. His title as the Harbinger is enough proof for it.
Tartaglia doesn’t fear any alpha because he believes he can take them head on and winning. He feels rivorigating excitement he hasn’t felt for a long time.
Such an intriguing omega.
“Please, call me Zhongli.” He abruptly says to the precious young man in front of him. The need to hear his name coming out from this omega overwhelms his mind, overriding everything. He doesn’t know why or how, the urge just suddenly exists within his instinct and it demands to be done.
A bit surprised but not showing any discomfort, Tartaglia humbly says, “How dare I, Your Majesty. You’re way above my station.” He sensibly declines.
“Sir Zhongli then, Sir Tartaglia.” He compromises.
“Very well, Lord Zhongli.” He concedes slightly. “Then, please call me Childe. It’d be my honor,” He put his hand on his chest and slightly bows before he daringly stares at his eyes, as if to challenge him to correct him again for his title.
“Likewise, Childe.” Zhongli purposefully purrs the young noble’s name. He doesn’t know what pushed him, but in one brave, reckless decision, he takes Tartaglia’s, no, Childe’s right hand and kisses it softly, while maintaining eye contact with said man. “Mayhaps with time, I can convince you to call my name leisurely.”
His inner alpha howl with happiness when he recognizes the omega in front of him doesn’t show any repulsion, if not a bit flushed with his daring approach. Unlike before, the redness in his ears cannot be hidden with mere composed behavior anymore.
“Perhaps.” Childe smiles disarmingly. “It seems that I’ve taken too much of your time, Lord Zhongli. Your slew of admirers are nothing but glaring daggers at me.”
True to his words, throngs of young foreign omega adults have been eyeing them in obvious envy. “Yet their presence will never amount to that of yours, Childe. I hope we can converse again soon.” He replies earnestly.
Such crude, vile annoyances.
Childe just throws him one of his more diplomatic smiles. He bows slightly before he turns around and walks away.
.
.
“I want you to look into the Snezhnaya’s emissary, Tartaglia.” Zhongli says to an elderly lady as they walk side by side in the corridor. The opening ball has ended with obvious success and he’s now on his way to return to his private wings.
“Tartaglia? The Snezhnaya’s alpha’s guardian?” Madame Ping asks with a curious note in her voice.
“He’s not an alpha.” Zhongli shakes his head. “His birth, his family, how he became Tsaritsa’s Harbinger, his current position and responsibility. His friends and enemies, his favorites and dislikes, and whether he’s being courted by anyone back at Snezhnaya and by who if he does. I want to know everything to the smallest detail.” He ends with a firm note.
“Your Majesty?” She says with barely hidden vigor and interest about the topic. “Are you going to…?” She lets the question linger on the air.
Zhongli turns his head at her and gives a tentative nod. “We’ll see. Make sure no one knows about this, Madame Ping.”
Snezhnaya’s Temporary Residence
11.30 PM
After checking in about the night’s update with their agents, Signora and Childe are finally making their way back into their current residence. They’ve excused themselves far earlier than others, since some of their omega nobles are still pretty exhausted after the long journey yesterday. It worked in his favor as well, since he’s only an inch away from literally smacking down those arrogant Fontaine’s alphas.
Overall, it’s a very exhausting night for him.
“What was that?” Signora asks bluntly as they ascend the stairs to their respective floor.
“What was what?” Childe throws back the question while yawning. His shoulder and back are so sore and stiff. He also hates how some mixed scents are sticking on his clothes. A very long warm bath followed by some late night snacks sounds wonderful for him.
“What did you talk about with Lord Morax?” She persists.
“Nothing much? Just the usual customary chit chat.” Childe shrugs. “Why the interest?” He looks at his teammate in suspicion.
Signora scoffs. “Down boy. I’m just asking because people keep whispering about it. I’m not interested in him.”
“Interest- why would you think that I’m being defensive about him?” The Eleventh Harbinger remarks with a frown. “I just took a breather from some sleazy ass alphas and omegas when he came around. We talked and that’s it.”
“It seems that it’s uncommon for him to attend events like this. Especially when he actually talks and interacts with a non-blood related omega- why did I explain this to you.” Signora sighs irritatedly. “Just don’t make any trouble here, Tartaglia.” She warns before turning to the direction of her assigned bedroom.
Childe only rolls his eyes as he continues to ascend the stairs to the third floor.
Uncommon to interact with an omega, huh.
“Had these people possessed half of equal amounts of your prowess, perhaps we’ll not have resorted to escape like this.”
Mayhaps he’s just bored. He knows how tedious and boring a ball can be when it’s filled with ambitious people who only want their power and title.
A gentle smile on Zhongli’s handsome face passes his mind and something in him is flustered once more. Shaking his head at the ridiculousness of the situation, Childe hastens his steps.
The wine must’ve gotten to him.
The sun’s light barely starts to touch the cold soil when a Snezhnayan maid is knocking on a particular room in the alpha’s floor.
“Lord Tartaglia?” The maid calls politely. When she receives no answer, she repeats her calls. “Lord Tartaglia?”
Another five minutes and she frowns in confusion. As far as she knew, Lord Tartaglia wasn't a heavy sleeper. None of the Harbingers are.
If this is any other day at Snezhnaya, she wouldn’t dare to do this. However, due to the importance of the task at hand, she bravely says, “I will come in, my Lord.”
She opens the unlocked door, just to see that the bed is made and empty.
Blinking in surprise, she takes a deeper peek and sees the bathroom is also void of any living being. She’s about to turn around when she hears another familiar voice.
“What are you doing? What’s with the ruckus?” Signora asks coldly.
“My Lady!” The maid bows deeply. “I apologize. You see…”
After a brief explanation, it’s Signora’s turn to be surprised. “What did you say?”
.
.
“Come on, Nick. I know you can do better than this.” Childe taunts as he breezily avoids a swing from his third in command.
“Then perhaps we should’ve used a wooden sword, my Lord.” Nick replies as he too, barely manage to avoid slashes from his superior’s blades.
“You’re such a worrywart.” Childe snickers. “Afraid of injuring your face?”
“On the contrary my Lord, it is you who made me worry.” Nick sighs as he thrusts his sword, which is expectantly deflected by the Harbinger’s blade.
“Afraid of accidentally injuring me, Nick?” The omega raises his eyebrow amusedly.
“Yes, my Lord.” Nick flatly says. “Lady Signora would have my head.”
“She would’ve had anyone’s head regardless.” Childe rolls his eyes. “And there’s no fun if we use wooden swords.”
Nick is about to say something when his eyes widen in recognition. He immediately jumps back to avoid the upcoming attack from his Lord, before bowing his head.
Childe immediately turns around and sees the current Emperor is walking peacefully to them. He’s a little shocked as well to see the older man so early in the morning here. “Your Imperial Majesty.” Childe greets.
Zhongli raises his eyebrow at the return of the official title, but he lets it go. “At ease, gentlemen.” He waves at them.
“What has brought you here, Your Majesty?” Childe inquires politely.
“I was wondering where you were.” Zhongli answers easily. “Then my hunch was telling me that you’d be here.”
“Do you need my assistance, Your Majesty?” The Eleventh Harbinger frowns in confusion.
“Oh, no.” Zhongli dismisses the idea. “Since we’re already here, fancy a spar with me, Sir Tartaglia?” He offers his hand.
“I would love to,” Childe says with a smile, “However, I never pull my punches and it wouldn’t do any good to Her Highness if I wounds Liyue’s most important person.” He declines the offer.
Zhongli chuckles amusedly. “Such confidence.”
Childe maintains his diplomatic smile. “I’m still Her Highness’ Harbingers, Your Majesty.” He subtly reminds him.
“What if I say that whatever happens here shall stay here?” Zhongli offers again. “There won’t be any repercussions for each side, including when I manage to injure you, Childe.”
Childe can hear the barely veiled sharp breath from his third in command at the use of his unofficial name and he sighs.
“Then I’d gladly take your offer, Your Majesty.” Childe agrees. “If you can lend me any wooden weapons that’d be excellent.” He reiterates what Nick asked of him earlier.
Zhongli motions his own attendant to bring in his weapon. “Are they not your usual weapons?” He gestures to the twin blades in the younger’s hands.
“They are.” Childe confirms. “But-”
“Are you afraid of being injured then?” The alpha baits as he wields his polearm.
Childe feels like he’s being reprimanded by the world at the perfectly same conversation he had with his third in command.
“I promise I'll try my best to avoid your face, Childe.” The alpha smiles provokingly.
Completely challenged, Childe faces the Emperor heads on. “Oh Your Majesty, my face is hardly my selling point” He says with a dash of teasing tone.
“After all, I’m the Eleventh of the Harbingers.”
.
.
“You’re holding back on me.” Zhongli says calmly. He thrusts his polearm and evades the upcoming attack by jumping sideways.
“So do you, Lord Zhongli.“ Childe replies. The only thing that can be heard in the almost empty training ground is their clashing weapons. Upon the older man’s request, both Nick and his own attendants are dismissed to the very edge of the area.
“Please, just call me Zhongli. All of these Lords and Your Majesty are tiring my ears.” Zhongli sighs as he effortlessly dodges another attempt to dismantle his pole.
“We are in public.” Childe points out. “And that is definitely not a remark I expected from the Emperor of Liyue.” He mutters lowly. He doesn’t know how long they’ve been sparring, if it can be called one. Unlike what he experienced with Nick earlier, what they’re doing right now is more like a dance. Enough for their weapons to collide and for them to invade each other’s personal space, but never enough to truly maim and hurt the other.
They manage to carry a conversation properly at that too.
His initial wariness of the alpha melts with the flow of their random banter, allowing him to give a more sincere and honest response. It helps that Zhongli shows a genuine intent to simply talk to him, rather than veiled maneuvers or something that he used to deal with from others.
Childe crouches down before shooting up from the bottom with both of his blades, which Zhongli immediately stops with his polearm and uses the momentum to push himself to the back. It gives a wide berth of distance between them while they take in for the much needed oxygen.
“Perhaps, you should expect a lot of uncommon things from me, Childe.” Zhongli says with a teasing smile. “Uncommon doesn’t mean a bad thing. We both know that, especially you.” He says knowingly.
“Are you implying that I’m special, Lord Zhongli?” Childe laughs in half-disbelief, half amusement. It takes a lot to tire him and he’s actually feeling tired right now. Just how long have they been sparring?
“It’s a good fight, Childe. I enjoyed it very much.” Zhongli says instead, while offering his hand.
“Likewise, Lord Zhongli.” He grabs Zhongli’s hand and shakes it firmly.
The Emperor of Liyue lets out a somewhat approving noise on the firm grip and stares at him directly. “I also expect a lot from you. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Zhongli says while rubbing the top of their joined hand with his thumb, before leaving him on the training ground.
Childe feels some kind of mixed feeling at the rather... intimate gesture. The only people that will do such a thing are sleazy ass alphas and he usually hates it terribly. But surprisingly, he’s not (at the very least) bothered with Zhongli’s touch.
With the Emperor’s departure, Nick immediately comes to his side. “My Lord. Your presence is needed back.” He bows his head.
Childe sighs as he lets go of his thoughts for the time being. “Fine, let’s go. I’ve also felt uncomfortable in these clothes.”
Childe knows something must’ve happened with the way some of their patrolling agents stare at him curiously as he and Nick make their way on the rather vast front yard.
“Did anything happen, Nick?” He asks.
“I’m not sure either, my Lord. I’ve just been told that your presence is requested by Lady Signora as soon as you’ve finished.” Nick shakes his head.
The Eleventh Harbinger’s frown only gets deeper at the explanation. If it’s something urgent Signora would simply order him back immediately.
Weird.
He speeds up his pace and Nick keeps up with him. It’s not long before they get into the building and he sees Signora sitting on the sofa. He looks around for something amiss and comes up with nothing.
“Enjoyed your sparring session, Tartaglia?” She asks calmly with a cup of tea in her hand.
“Cut it off, Signora. Did something happen?” Childe says as he plops down across from her. “Why did you need me back here?”
“Are you really sure what you had with Lord Morax last night is just a mere chit chat?” She asks with a low smirk.
“Why are we back at this topic again?” Childe raises his eyebrow in annoyance. “I’ve told you nothing happened.”
Signora just hums before gesturing at behind him with her chin.
Completely not understanding what she’s on, Childe turns his back and he sees nothing. “What the fuck are you talking about?” He hisses annoyedly. “If you’re done playing games with me, Signora, I want to take a bath and change out of this outfit.”
“Earlier, a male attendant from Lord Morax’s quarter came here.” Signora starts. “He asked about what Snezhnaya’s envoys usually prefer to eat as our meals, but it's clear that he’s asking about your preference. Obviously, our maid pretended to be a lower servant and excused that she has to ask a more superior maid. She then went looking for you for guidance, but you’ve gone out.”
“What?” Childe incredulously says.
“I thought it’d end once he’s informed about your departure, but no. He came back earlier with a tray full of varieties of soft cakes and croissants for Snezhnaya’s envoys, he said.” She hums.
Blinking in shock at the explanation, Childe takes another look. “Those are from Lord Morax?” He disbelievingly says. He thought it’s just their share of snacks or something.
“Exactly, little Tartaglia.” She smiles viciously. “So answer me right now, what the fuck did you talk about with him, hm?”
“I’ve told you it’s nothing!” Childe hisses in irritation. He doesn’t take well being accused of something he didn’t do or not aware of. “Isn’t it you who took everything out of context? He’s the host, Signora. It’s basic courtesy to offer and adjust their food to our palate.” He huffs.
Signora rolls her eyes. “You’re truly such a naïve omega. I give whoever’s chasing your hand back home my immense pity.”
“You’re the weird one.” Childe rises from his seat. “I think those insignificant rumors have gotten to your empty little head, Signora.” He taps his head and leaves his teammate alone in the lounge.
.
.
“His denial is impressive.” Signora sighs as she stands up from her seat. “You, keep an eye out for him.” She orders with a wave of her hand as she too, walks towards the stairs. “Oh, send a healer to check on him too. I saw a minor wound on the side of his face. We can’t afford for him to have any injuries now that he might possibly have attracted Lord Morax’s attention.”
“Yes, my Lady.”
Childe thought he’s kidding when Zhongli said he’ll meet him again on the next day.
Wrong.
Zhongli always shows up on his morning’s routine without fail for the past couple of days.
Signora’s words are starting to bother him, especially after Nick informs him that the Emperor shows no sign of giving the same treatment to other emissaries aside from the Celestia’s. Even then, he’s informed that the reason for the Emperor’s special treatment to the Celestia’s envoy is to ensure a smooth road for one of Liyue royal’s courting rather than something personal.
But still.
It didn’t take long for words to travel and he’s tired of the curious look from everyone. It somehow also serves as a fuel for other cocky alphas and envious omegas to try and get closer to him. They want to know what has made the Emperor of Liyue pay attention to this Snezhnaya’s emissary.
Which doesn't bode well for him.
“It’s certainly fascinating that the famously busy Lord Zhongli is always here to have a spar with me.” Childe says with gritted teeth as he pushes his energy to his wrist, trying to break into Zhongli’s solid defense with his blades.
“Entertaining my guests is one of my jobs.” Zhongli amusedly says as he breezily maintains the status quo of with his polearm.
Childe raises his eyebrow. “I feel honored to have such privilege, Lord Zhongli. Perhaps I can advise you to do the same for other emissaries?” He inquires politely. His words are a little bit impudent, but he’s genuinely tired from the unwanted attention.
Zhongli's laugh echoes in the open space and Childe feels weird tingles on his body. He breaks their stance and takes a leap to the back after sensing the older man has no plan on moving from his position.
The ruler of Liyue approaches him with his weapon withdrawn on his side and he watches him in wariness. “Maybe I should revise.” He mirthfully says as he comes to a stop right in front of him. “You are the only one who has captured my interest.” He whispers with a predatory look on his face.
Childe shudders instantly at that look. Zhongli’s molten orange-ish eyes seem to glow as he gazes at him heavily. His nose also picks up the mixed scent of cardamom, sandalwood, and something that’s just alpha-ish and Zhongli. For once, after he became an active duty soldier, he feels his omegan’s side actually reacting to an alpha. There’s this sliver of urge to submit to Zhongli, to bare his neck and beg the older man to scent him. The omega and fighter instinct in him clash against each other. The need to run to and run away from Zhongli overwhelms him equally.
“Very bold of you, Lord Zhongli.” Childe manages to respond, albeit with a choked up voice.
“At last, you’re finally reacting to me.” Zhongli murmurs pleasedly.
“What?” He whispers faintly. That sober him up from his haze and he defensively takes a step back and puts his weapon out while still breathing deeply, trying to compose himself again.
“What’s this all about, Lord Zhongli?” Childe growls threateningly.
Zhongli hushes him softly and Childe shivers again at the soothing voice.
“Don’t be afraid, Childe. I’m not here to hurt you.” He cooes him gently. “I was just concerned, since you really seemed to not show any reaction whenever I was close to you. I should’ve simply considered that you’re indeed a very strong omega.” He hums pleasingly.
“And?” The omega hisses in wariness.
Zhongli only smiles mysteriously. “Well, it’s getting late, Childe. I’m afraid that I’m needed somewhere after this.” He deflects tactifully. “It’s an enjoyable spar as usual. I’ll see you tonight at the ball, I hope?”
Childe only nods his head a little as courtesy. “I’ll always be on my envoys’ side, my Lord.”
“Excellent.” Zhongli ends charmingly before he walks back into the direction of the exit.
Childe watches him disappear behind the wall with a calculative look on his face.
.
.
“A purebred alpha, huh…” He trails off as he leans his back on the sofa.
“Yes, my Lord.” Nick nods dutifully. “Lord Morax is a purebred alpha and has been using some kind of perfume or herbal concoction to suppress his scent in order to be more approachable.”
“I see. That explains a lot of things.” Childe murmurs.
Is his reaction truly because he’s a purebred alpha?
Childe sighs as his mind reconsiders everything. Contrary to what Signora believes, he’s not that oblivious. With each day that has passed by, he’s more convinced with Signora’s words about Lord Morax being interested in him as an alpha.
A purebred alpha, he corrects himself.
It’s true that he’s never interested in anyone back at Snezhnaya. They’re either afraid of him or too arrogant with nothing to back their empty boasts. Maybe because he’s a strong omega, he also never seems to be interested in those alphas. He knows perfectly well that they’re weak and beneath him.
He prefers a strong alpha. Someone who’s stronger than him, at the minimum. He also needs an alpha who won’t hinder his career choice or the Harbinger’s title he has earned with blood and sweat. His aim of life doesn’t stop in the baby and family department after all. He continuously wants to get stronger and better and his alpha has to understand that.
He refuses to be constrained in the typical omega’s life.
Those are also part of the reason as to why he remains mateless even now.
Is he being dispatched here with that thought in mind by Her Highness? But she clearly knows his goals and has supported him wholeheartedly all of this time. He also knows he’s an indispensable power in the Harbinger’s ranks. It just doesn’t make any sense if he’s to be honest.
Which brings him back to the current problem.
What should he do about Liyue’s Emperor?
It’ll be a lie if he says he’s not intrigued as well. Only a handful of people can actually keep up with him and that alone has proved that the Lord isn’t a mere purebred alpha. He has the strength and a fast-thinker to counter his unorthodox attacks.
.
.
Maybe he should just let it be, like the flowing water on a river.
Imperial Lawn
07.30 PM
Instead of being held indoors like previous nights, tonight’s ball is being held in the Palace’s beautiful lawn. The air is thankfully not that cold or too warm, just perfect for a night outing. The change of venue has brought a different tone and mood as well. It’s somehow more festive and romantic with the rather dim lighting and soft music.
Childe has just finished talking with a polite and mannerly Inazuma’s omega who’s currently being courted by one of the Snezhnaya’s alpha when he smells his scent.
“I see you’ve been busy more than ever, Childe.” Zhongli says in lieu of a greeting.
“Your Majesty.” He bows.
“I’ve given you permission to call me by my name and yet you still call me so formally, Childe.” The alpha quips good-naturedly.
“I wouldn’t dare, Your Majesty.” Childe excuses.
“It’s just a matter of time.” Zhongli hums. “You look very dashing tonight, Childe.” He compliments sincerely.
The omega has to stop himself from reacting. He’s heard numerous words of admiration from others and he’s never affected before.
Why now?
Why do some parts of him actually feel flattered and happy that Zhongli sees him as an attractive omega?
The immediate surge of hushed whispers around them snaps his attention back and irritation fills him. There’s no doubt that this will create another plethora of rumors about him.
“Thank you for your praise, Your Majesty.” He modestly says. “Unfortunately, someone once said that compliments never seem to work on me.” He smiles tightly.
“Yet, you’re getting a little bit red.” Zhongli rebuts calmly.
“It’s probably the lighting, Your Majesty.” Childe denies.
“I see.” Zhongli amusedly hums. “Would it be presumptuous of me to ask your hand for a dance then?” The alpha asks with a deep voice.
“It would be my pleasure, Your Majesty.” Childe says with a smile while tilting his head down a little. A bit demure and elegant, but it’s clear that he doesn’t yield under the alpha’s heavy gaze. “Alas I’m here as Snezhnayan’s guardian. I have to prioritize my task over my own pleasure.” He rejects with a diplomatic tone.
Instead of being irritated or offended like other alphas, the Emperor of this nation just stares at him with intense wonder on his face.
“Such integrity. Tsaritsa is so lucky to have you as her lieutenant.” Zhongli voices out his opinion.
“You always praise me far too kindly, Your Majesty.” Childe responds back.
“Maybe I want to have your attention.” The alpha delightfully says.
“You’ll always have my attention if you wish for it.” He rebuts.
The Harbinger’s taken by surprise when the alpha takes and lifts his right hand. He can only bite the inside of his cheeks to ground himself down as Zhongli kisses the top of his hand. “I’ll hold on to that, Childe.” Zhongli lowly says while looking straight at his eyes.
Challenging.
.
.
“Are you really sure you don’t have something going on with him, Tartaglia?” Signora inquires calmly as they walk back to their residence with their agents and people.
“My answer remains the same, Signora.” Childe replies curtly.
“It’s so dark…” Childe trails off as he watches the morning’s cloudy sky from his bedroom’s window. Seeing how the leaves on those trees keep on swaying, the wind must be strong as well. He lets out a disappointed sigh.
Should he skip today’s training?
The atmosphere feels gloomy too. He’s just been here for around two weeks, but he’s already well-adjusted to Liyue’s sun that its absence is very palpable from his perspective.
The Eleventh Harbinger sighs once again before putting his weapons back to the side of his bed. The thought of getting back to the bed passes his mind, but Childe dismisses the idea. He makes his way out of his room and descends down to the first floor.
When he hears faint voices, Childe’s immediately alert. As far as he knows, breakfast wouldn’t be served until another hour or so. What’s the commotion about then?
Quickening his pace, he skips down the stairs and he immediately sees Nick and their maid along with a Liyue’s staff in front of the entrance.
“Is something wrong?” He asks as he approaches them.
“My Lord.” Nick greets with a bow.
“Good morning, Lord Tartaglia.” The Liyue’s attendant lowers his head politely. “His Imperial Majesty invites you to enjoy breakfast with him.” The attendant explains.
The Harbinger frowns at the explanation.
“Is this a formal invitation from His Majesty to the Snezhnaya’s emissaries?” He inquires while crossing his arms.
“No, my Lord. His Imperial Majesty seeks a private meet up with you.” The attendant answers. “His Imperial Majesty also told me to give you this.” He offers a piece of sealed envelope.
Childe takes it off from his hand and examines the seal. It looks genuine, glittering gold wax embossed with Liyue’s logo. He opens it and takes the folded paper inside.
I figure you’ll be questioning my attendants for the validity.
Yes, Childe. I’m inviting you to have breakfast with me instead of sparring with you today. You told me last night that I’ll always have your attention if I seek it.
I’ll be waiting for your arrival.
Yours truly,
Zhongli
Childe slowly exhales his breath as exasperation and something warm spreads from his chest to the tip of his fingers.
.
.
“You’re here, Childe.” Zhongli greets.
“Thank you for your generous invitation, Your Majesty.” Childe puts his hand on his chest and bows slightly.
“The pleasure is all mine. Please take a seat.” He gestures at the seat across him.
“Thank you, Your Majesty.” Childe responds.
As soon as he’s seated, multiple maids and attendants immediately prepare and put down numerous steaming dishes in front of him while another maid is pouring tea on his side.
“The chefs have cooked nutritious soups and noodles for us. It’s perfect for such chilly, gray weather this morning.” Zhongli says warmly. “They’ve also prepared some side dishes. I do hope they’re to your liking, Childe.”
“They’re more than enough, Your Majesty. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.” He says modestly.
“Did you sleep well?” Zhongli asks after they start to eat the sumptuous meals.
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Childe answers.
“Liyue’s weather must be very contrasting in comparison to Snezhnaya. Should I ask for more fans and coolers for your residence?”
“It’s doable, Your Majesty. Thank you for your concern.”
Zhongli exhales softly and waves his hand once. All the attendants and maids immediately bow and leave them all alone on the balcony.
“You always seem to be more comfortable to converse with me when there’s no one around us.” Zhongli answers his silent question. “Aren’t we close enough to drop the formality by now, Childe? It’s not like anyone will get angry if you call me as Zhongli in public.”
“I wouldn’t dare, Lord Zhongli.” Childe repeats his denial of the request for the nth time for the whole time he’s here.
“At least drop the nobility talk.” Zhongli coaxes. “I’d like to get closer to you and I do want to enjoy our private time without any barrier between us. It’s such a shame that the wind is too strong this morning or I’d have taken you to my favorite pavilion.”
Childe only smiles, not knowing how to respond to such blunt and personal reasoning.
“Then Lord Zhongli, with all due respect, don’t you think that you’ve blatantly shown an incredible, partial favorability with the Snezhnayan’s entourage?” He politely inquires.
Or himself, to be exact.
“The rumors are getting ridiculous by days and I wouldn’t want to cause any trouble for Liyue or Her Highness.” He continues humbly, despite the fact that all of these wouldn’t have happened if it’s not for the alpha’s attitude towards him.
“So you’ve noticed that.” Zhongli nonchalantly replies. He puts his chopstick down and looks him in the eyes. “Your prowess at handling weapons is phenomenal. You can easily establish your own dominance to any alpha without fear. You’re charming, intelligent, have a good sense of politics and wits. No wonder you rose up as Tsaritsa’s Harbinger so quickly.” He says with genuine admiration.
A little bit confused with the sudden barrage of statements, Childe stares at the alpha contemplatively. “Did you do a background check on me, Lord Zhongli?”
“What made you think so?” Zhongli throws a question back.
“You said “no wonder you rose up as Her Highness’ Harbinger so quickly”. The fact that I’m the youngest might be a public knowledge, but not everyone knows just how quick I was to rise the ranks unless you dig into my background.” He points out.
“You also have a sharp and good observational skill too.” Zhongli adds his compliment.
“I don’t think that’s the right time to futilely flatter me again, Lord Zhongli.” Childe says with an unamused smile. His patience is thinning and he’s not interested in a leisure fling with just any alpha. At least not with one that may or may not cause a major diplomatic incident if it goes south.
“I think we both know the reason for my very partial favorability to you, Childe.” Zhongli finally says before he takes a sip of his tea.
“I don’t have time for games, my Lord.” Childe says seriously. He too, has put down his spoon and is staring at the older man.
“Who says I’m playing with you?” Zhongli inquires back while leaning his chin on his hand. He looks a little amused, but curious and somehow it irks him.
“I’m a foreign dignitary.” He flatly points out.
“Then this shall be the beginning of a very tightly knitted relationship between Liyue and Snezhnaya.”
“You talk about this as if this is a formal contract instead of something personal, Lord Zhongli. Should I be concerned? As far as I know, my purpose in Liyue is just to be the Snezhnaya’s emissary and nothing more.” He accuses lightly.
“It’s not my intention to do so. I do want this from my own personal gain. And is it not because you insist on calling me so distantly, Childe?” Zhongli says appeasingly.
“I’m a Duke, Lord Zhongli.” Childe says, ignoring the knowing smile from the alpha.
“Who carries Snezhnaya’s Imperial blood. Your House is actually related to the royalty and you’re actually the direct lineage of its branch family despite your House’s historical consistency to stay low. Even if you’re a commoner, I see no problem with that.”
“On the contrary, the problem lies with it. I can’t leave my post for some personal reasons and I can’t imagine forgoing the Harbinger’s title I’ve worked so hard for for an alpha. So if you seek an instant union-”
“The official wedding can wait until you’re ready, I don’t mind. Actually, I never had the intention to wed before I met you. Also, about your title as the Harbinger, I’m sure we can work out something with Tsaritsa.” Zhongli throws back his argument.
“Official wedding.” Childe points out flatly.
“I’m not one to let go of something I have considered as mine.” Zhongli says with an intense look. “As long as you’ve bore my mark, I won’t mind giving you as much time you need to officialize our relationship. It’s only papers and administrations.” He shrugs. “The world will still know that you’re my omega.”
Childe only coolly assesses the older man across from him. Their halfway eaten breakfast has undoubtedly gotten cold.
“You’re not the type who will shy away from challenges and chances, Childe. I’m a strong purebred alpha and so do you. Will you not try this with me?” Zhongli provokes him.
.
.
In the evening, when he walks past Signora to get some snacks, he hears the lowly muttered scoff.
“Liar.”
That night, he accepts the Emperor’s offer for a dance.
.
.
He doesn’t hate it.
A week later
“We agreed to get to know each other Zhongli, but isn’t this a little bit too bold?” Childe complains as he plops down to the huge sofa in the pavilion.
Unlike a week before, the weather is very nice. It’s not too hot or too cold with enough sun to warm up the skin comfortably. The wind is cool too, blowing softly as it occasionally generates the rustling sound from the flowers and greenery leaves around the pavilion.
“I see no problem with it, love.” Zhongli says as he puts down the last document to the stack of maps on the desk.
“Such a scandalous move, Your Majesty. Inviting the omega you’re courting to come in a closed space. Unchaperoned at that.” Childe mocks good-naturedly.
“This is hardly a closed space.” Zhongli denies as he gestures for him to come to his side.
Rolling his eyes fondly, Childe obediently stands up and makes his way to the alpha’s side. Zhongli moves to the left to make some space for him as he lies down beside him.
“So this is the true purpose for the rather comically huge sofa.” Childe comments as he lets himself be pulled into the alpha’s embrace.
“Why would I confine myself to my office when I have such a beautiful garden in this fine evening?” Zhongli reasons. “Additionally, we all know you’re not a damsel in distress.” He hums as he buries his face on the top of his head. “I’m sure that Fontaine’s alpha has nasty bruises with the way you knocked him down last night. You aren’t exactly unchaperoned either since your subordinate is standing loyally at the entrance of the garden.” He adds.
“You’re just making excuses.” Childe scoffs without any bite in his voice. He circles his arms around the alpha’s neck as the older man moves his body to be above him.
“Perhaps I am.” Zhongli chuckles. “Should we move to a truly closed room then?” He teases as he nuzzles his nose on his neck, taking in the pleasant smell of his omega.
Upon hearing the invitation, he lightly slaps the side of the alpha’s arm in fake indignation. “Such an improper invitation, Your Majesty!”
The alpha in question just chuckles before he starts peppering kisses and leaving bites all around the omega’s neck. Childe suppresses his shudder when his body unwittingly reacts to the thick pheromones that’s coming out from the alpha. It’s basically the only thing he can smell and he’s getting a little dazed. It seems that he’s also emitting a responding scent from the way Zhongli growls.
“Aren’t we moving a little bit too fast?” Childe gasps as Zhongli’s hand begins to earnestly roam underneath his shirt. A moan accidentally escapes from him when the older’s finger brushes against his nipple and purposefully rubs it slowly. He grips Zhongli’s back tightly at the weird and dizzying sensation.
“We’re just a very effective and efficient couple. Our physical and mental compatibility isn’t to be questioned anymore.” Zhongli murmurs deeply before he sucks on another patch of his bare skin, most definitely giving him another reddish mark that he’d have to hide. His lips soon become occupied and he tries to keep up with the demanding and intrusive kisses, refusing to yield to the alpha’s domination so easily.
When they break their kisses for the much needed oxygen, he can clearly see how much Zhongli is affected by their activity. Gone’s the usually calm and collected expression on his face. The one on his face right now is more feral, more predatory and he internally feels shivers of adoration and pride for choosing a good alpha.
“You look like you want to eat me.” Childe chuckles as he tucks Zhongli’s side bangs to the back of his ear.
“Believe me, I’d love to do more than that.” Zhongli says while gazing at the side of his neck.
Most probably his unmarked scent gland.
“I thought you’re duped as one of the most patient men in Liyue?” Childe distracts him as he pulls the alpha to rest on his chest instead.
“It’s always a special circumstance when it concerns you.” Zhongli’s voice is muffled but he can clearly hear his answer.
Childe snorts at the cheesy excuse.
“We don’t even know what will happen considering our position, Zhongli.” Childe sighs as he strokes the older man’s head. “I’d like to keep my title as the Harbinger after all.”
“Don’t fret. We will be together in one way or another, no matter what. I can promise you that much, love.”
The weather has been back to being very awful for the past few days.
Childe sighs as he gazes toward the backyard of the Snezhnaya’s temporary residence. The rain has been falling non stop for four days straight and the gloomy atmosphere starts to permeate into the building as well. The last time he saw the sun was probably when he’s with Zhongli back then.
The alpha is currently heavily occupied with his duty. The rain has brought huge flooding and landslides to a nearby city, thus adding the list of things he needs to deal with. As far as he knows, Zhongli is visiting the disaster site along with his trusted men.
So yeah, the only source of his amusement right now is-
“My Lord, Lord Osial has come to visit you.”
Him.
“Let him in.” Childe orders.
“Yes, my Lord.”
Osial of Liyue, one of the aristocrats that served directly under Zhongli, as well as his best friend.
Their meeting was purely accidental too. He’s asking the guard for an indoor training room when the blue haired man passes by. Long story short, Osial offered his personal training room to be used in the Palace.
He was understandably suspicious at first upon their initial introduction. He’s been here for almost three weeks and he’s never seen him before. However after his explanation (and fact-check from Nick later), he accepted his companion. The alpha has just arrived with Liyue’s envoy after returning from -surprisingly- Snezhnaya when he came across him. Suffice to say, they have a lot to talk about since he does miss Snezhnaya from time to time. They’re pretty well matched, especially after he found out that the alpha is also a good fighter and has no regard for nobility and all that stuff. It took him a day to converse with him as if he’s his actual close acquaintance.
“You always look like someone has taken your candy whenever I come around.” Osial says amusedly. “Do you miss Zhongli that much?” He teases.
Childe turns his head to face the alpha directly. “Perhaps if my Lord is so kind to stop the rain, this humble guest won’t be so bored.” He sarcastically says.
“I can’t stop the falling rain, but I have good news for you.” Osial says as he sits beside him.
“And what is that?” He says with a raised eyebrow.
“Several brand new bows I ordered have arrived this morning.” Osial says with a smirk.
“You’re just using me as a tester in disguise of being nice.” Childe rolls his eyes.
“Yet, it doesn’t stop you from perking up like the sun, Lord Tartaglia.” Osial mockingly says.
“Someone’s bound to replace its job in this dreary weather, Lord Osial.” The Harbinger refutes as he stands up. “Let’s go, those bows are waiting for us.”
This time, it’s Osial’s turn to roll his eyes but he still follows the omega to the door.
.
.
“No sane people will use the bow that way.” Osial complains as he pants on his knees. His polearm is discarded on the floor.
“It’s not always smooth pavement and ideal situation in war and riot, Lord Osial.” Childe replies as he too puts the dark brown and red, heavy bow to the floor. “We do what we must do. Use what can be used.”
“Spoken like a true warrior.” Osial scoffs with a smile. “I can’t believe you pulled that move.”
“It’s alright, Lord Osial. It’s not everyday anyone can see a Harbinger in action.” Childe replies cheekily.
“Should I consider it as a blessing then since I’ll often see you around after this?” Osial laughs. “Imagine my surprise when I was informed that Zhongli is discreetly-but-not-discreetly courting the Snezhnaya’s emissary.”
Childe just sighs as he sits on the wooden floor. “Well, we haven’t talked much about the arrangement with me being a Harbinger.”
“It’s such a shame though.” Osial says with a small shrug. “An omega of your caliber deserves a better title and seat. Are you that in love with Zhongli?” He curiously asks.
“What do you mean?” Childe frowns.
“What do you-” Osial’s eyes widen. “Oh fuck.”
“What?” Childe demands.
“Well, there are talks among the court.” The alpha hesitantly says, a first after he met him. “It is said that you’ll serve as Zhongli’s mistress rather than his official mate due to your foreign lineage, even though you carry the royal blood as well. ” He ends with a regretful face.
“What?” Childe raises his voice.
Osial immediately winces at the blatant ire from the omega. “I thought you knew and agreed about that term. I thought that’s why the court’s in peace now. Did Zhongli not tell you anything?”
Childe stops in his tracks and unease fills him. “He didn’t mention anything.”
The alpha pitifully stares at Childe. “The court wants a noble of pure Liyuen’s blood and someone who can continuously support Zhongli as his mate. Additionally, it’s not like you can always stay in Liyue since you want to keep your Harbinger’s title, right? I don’t think it’s actually as bad as it sounds like.” He continues.
Childe grits his teeth and glares at the alpha. “If you’re lying to me-”
“What would I gain from it?” Osial scornfully says. “But honestly Tartaglia, it’s not that bad.” He assures him. “I’m sure Guizhong will be understanding, she’s practically a saint. It’ll be a balanced situation for both of you, in fact. Guizhong can remain as the Nation’s Empress and do her duties beside Zhongli in your absence. In return, you can maintain your status as the Harbinger and bear some heirs for him, since we all know who Zhongli's current favorite omega.”
Osial’s explanations only flame up his anger and Childe is barely able to level out his voice. “Thank you for your advice, Lord Osial. I’m a little bit tired so I’ll return back to my residence.” He says curtly while bowing his head a little before standing up from his position and leaves the training room.
The blue haired man notes the tightly clenched fist and he smiles maliciously.
“Your welcome, Lord Tartaglia.”
That night, Childe finds out three facts.
One, is that the court was indeed, against their union, but they suddenly are appeased out of nowhere before Zhongli’s departure.
Second, Lady Guizhong is apparently Zhongli’s long standing best friend. She’s in the entourage with Osial and the one who also accompanied Zhongli to the disaster’s site even though she’s just arrived that morning. That alone has spoken volumes of her influence in the Royal Palace. The maids and most nobles are also convinced that she would be the one with the title as the Empress due to her diligent and good image with Liyue’s people before Zhongli paid attention to him, even though there’s never a confirmation of courting between them both.
Third, he hates how logical and well-matched Osial’s explanation that the chance of it being a lie has plummeted to less than ten percent.
Rather than sadness, he feels anger.
He knows that his situation with Zhongli is a little bit unstable with both of them in high ranking positions respectively. It’s partly his oversight too, for not explicitly establishing their current relationship. He just automatically assumes that he is to be Zhongli’s one and only mate.
Silly Childe.
Zhongli is still an Emperor of a nation.
It’s not uncommon for a ruler to take an omega concubine or two, even in Snezhnaya. That law’s thankfully erased though when Her Highness rose up as the Queen and it completely slips out of his mind.
“We will be together in one way or another, no matter what.”
So this is what he meant. He may love him, or favor him now as Osial mentioned, but who knows what the future will bring? Even if in the end he lets go of his title as Harbinger and stays in Liyue - or even becomes the Empress, he has no interest in someone who can easily be so unfaithful. It’ll also be a disservice for both him and Guizhong and no one deserves this disrespect, even if it’s for an Emperor.
If Liyuen favors fairness, Snezhnayan lives for loyalty.
Silly, naïve Ajax.
It’s not essentially a betrayal, but why does it feel like it in his mouth?
“I apologize, Your Majesty but Lord Tartaglia doesn’t feel well and thus will cancel his usual morning spar for now.”
“Your Majesty, Lord Tartaglia is cited to be caught up on another matter regarding his envoy and he won’t be able to join you for dinner.”
“I am terribly sorry, Your Imperial Majesty, but Lord Tartaglia has gone to bed and asked to be not disturbed.”
“Your Majesty, the maid has informed me that the snacks and medicine remain untouched when she delivers the Snezhnaya envoy’s lunch. Should I try to change it to Snezhnayan’s snacks?”
“I’ve confirmed with our staff that Lady Signora will be the only one in attendance for tonight’s ball. However, she said that Lord Tartaglia will be present on the last ball tomorrow night.” The attendant explains while bowing his back.
“I see, you’re dismissed.” Zhongli sighs as he rubs his temple.
“Yes, Your Majesty.” He bows deeply before walking out of his Emperor’s office while Madame Ping walks in.
“What happened, Your Majesty?” Madame Ping inquires after she gives the customary bow.
“It seems that I have unknowingly made a grave error.” Zhongli sighs again as he leans to his chair.
“He’s rejected another offer, Your Majesty?” Madame Ping asks concernedly.
“He did.” Zhongli says as he rubs his face. “He’s been obviously avoiding me for the past few days. I didn’t even manage to get a glimpse of him ever since I left for Lingju.”
“Tomorrow’s the last night for the foreign envoys.” She says worriedly. “Should I ask the secretary to make a formal summoning for him? He won’t be able to avoid it.”
“He’s the type to get even angrier when cornered like that and I don’t want to make a commotion.” Zhongli informs her. “But I fear that I’m losing him.” He regretfully sighs.
She frowns deeply as heavy concern is etched on her face. “Lady Guizhong has also asked me about what’s happening between Your Majesty and Lord Tartaglia, seeing that she’s not properly introduced to him yet. She’s been insisting on meeting him personally.”
“Don’t.” Zhongli immediately reacts. “Please keep an eye on Guizhong until I’ve resolved this with Childe first.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.” She nods. “Oh! I almost forgot, we have just received a reply, Your Majesty.” She excitedly says as she takes a sealed letter from the hidden pocket on her robe.
Zhogli immediately takes it off her hands and opens the envelope.
A sense of calmness gradually fills his mind as he reads the content. “She approved. You know what to do, right?” He looks up to her.
“Yes, Your Majesty.” She bows with a smile.
Since this is the closing ball, Childe knows he can’t possibly be absent. Instead of letting his current situation get a better hold of him, he puts on his best suit and proudly walks behind their entourage to the outdoor ball with an easy smile beside Signora.
He stands beside her when Zhongli appears to make the closing speech. Beside the alpha, stands a beautiful woman, probably in her mid-late twenties. She looks kind and gentle, the way she poses herself speaks of her noble upbringing. Adored whispers and excited hushes of Lady Guizhong basically confirmed his suspicion about her identity.
Despite all of that, he still confidently and proudly holds his head high. He’s still there and willingly makes small talks with some alphas who are acquainted with some of the Snezhnaya’s omegas. He still bears it when some arrogant alphas are still trying to get into his pants. He even makes a good small talk with Osial even though the alpha’s a little bit too close and too skinship-y to his personal taste.
But when the first dance begins, he knows his duty to mingle and talk as an emissary has finished. He can’t go back now when the night is still so young, so he escapes to the secluded pavilion that he accidentally discovered in the vast area two weeks ago.
Another day and it’ll be all over.
Over.
A wave of sadness washes him instantly. It truly has only dawned on him. Tomorrow he’ll leave this place and probably won’t be back for a good long time.
Maybe forever.
It’s somehow funny that in less than a month Zhongli has carved such a deep mark in his life. Or perhaps is it because he’s the first alpha who sees his strong personalities and abilities as gifts to be adored rather than something to be conquered and suppressed? Or is it as Zhongli said, they’re highly compatible with each other? Physically and mentally?
Childe exhales roughly. He’s rubbing his face in frustration and abruptly stops when he hears the telltale of someone’s presence. He curses internally when he recognizes the scent.
“Childe.” Zhongli greets. “I’m glad to see you well. It’s so hard to reach you these days.” He says with a tilt on his head.
“Your Majesty.” The omega nods his head stiffly.
“Why do you not join the festivity? Are you truly unwell?” Zhongli asks concernedly as he approaches the omega. When he sees the older man outstretch his hand to touch him, Childe immediately leans to the other side, avoiding him. From the corner of his eyes he can see how the alpha’s jaw tightens in displeasure but he doesn’t say anything and drops his arm down.
“Did I do something wrong?” Zhongli confronts. “Why are you avoiding me so avidly?”
Childe takes a sigh before facing the purebred alpha directly. “I have no interest in pursuing our relationship anymore.” Childe says bluntly.
“You’re lying.” Zhongli replies with a hard tone. “Why are you lying to me?”
“I’m not.” Childe scoffs. “I have no interest in being the second, Your Majesty.”
“My second-?” The alpha asks with a confused frown.
“I have to go back to my envoy’s side. Excuse me, Your Majesty.” Childe bows curtly and leaves. However before he can go too far, his wrist is snatched up from the back.
“Childe, what happened? Why did you say that? What do you mean?” Zhongli demands with confusion painted all over his face.
A sliver of hesitation passes his mind but Childe remains just as firm. “Nothing happened. Let go of my hand, Your Majesty.” He internally flinches when he sees the genuine glint of anger when he uses Zhongli’s formal title instead of his name.
He has to get away, and fast.
“Let go of my hands.” Childe hisses.
“No. We are going to solve this now.” Zhongli stays just as firm.
“I refuse. I’ve told you clearly that I don’t want to continue this anymore, Zhongli.” Childe hisses. He shakes his hand off again, but the alpha’s grasp only gets tighter. He ends up trying to pull his wrist away and it seems that Zhongli has enough of his rebellion. The alpha pulls him in instead and he doesn’t expect the amount of strength the older man put. He can’t keep his footing and ends up being pulled into his warm embrace.
Suddenly, Zhongli’s scent bursts out and gets so dense in just a few seconds. He chokes on the sudden blast of purebred alpha’s pheromone, unable to control his omega instinct to immediately surrender and survive, as it recognizes that the alpha is truly furious.
And dangerous.
“Why the fuck do you smell like Osial?” Zhongli growls menacingly. He’s still gripping his wrist tightly and he’s sure a little more force and Zhongli will be able to break it.
“What the fuck are you talking about now?” Childe cusses back, still fighting on his omega instinct. It’s not his first rodeo dealing with an angry purebred alpha, but why is it so hard to fight off Zhongli’s dominance?
“Did you spend the past few days with him?” Zhongli demands again.
“That’s none of your business.” He replies just as strongly.
“It is when you are my omega.” The older man says angrily. “You avoided me so valiantly and yet, you’re spending your time with another alpha?” He possessively says.
“I talked with him earlier.” He snappily says while shaking his wrist again, but to no avail, his grip is as immovable as a mountain. A part of him sings joyously at the territorial undertone Zhongli used, but another part of him is also screaming at him for being delighted by it.
“There’s no way his scent will stick on your skin if that’s the case and even then, just how close were he to be able to leave his scent on- what’s this?” Zhongli cuts off his own tirade. He snaps his head to where the alpha’s eyes are directed at and winces. Due to his struggle earlier, the alpha opted to lift his wrist upward to make it harder for him to shake him off, but it also made the sleeve of his shirt sag downward and show the blue-ish and old-greenish bruises on his lower arm.
“Nothi-”
“I said don’t lie to me, Childe!” Zhonglis voice booms in the empty area and he’s a little bit taken aback with the tone. Zhongli’s pheromone also gets thicker -if that’s even possible- and sourer with each second.
“It’s from the sparring I did with Lord Osial.” Childe confesses a little breathlessly as he starts to get dazed with the flood of pheromones. “We sometimes do hands to hands combat.”
At this, Zhongli’s ire completely goes off the roof.
“So you did spend your time with him instead of me. Why? What do Osial have that I do not? What did I do to warrant your rejection like this? ” The alpha says pressures him. “I tried to respect your space, but it seems like I made a wrong decision to not let my men spy on you.”
“I refuse to be a mistress.” Childe hisses back, blinking his eyes and focusing his mind. “I’ve been told, Zhongli. About your court, about Guizhong. I refuse to be a mistress and it’ll be a great discourtesy to both me and Guizhong if we continue our courtship, as unofficial as it is.”
“Mistress?” Zhongli reconfirms what he has just heard. “Mistress- who told you that? Why is Guizhong involved here?” He demands.
“Why?” Childe pushes back even though he’s getting a little fainter. “Afraid that your plan is in shambles because I know it first?”
“On the contrary, Childe, you have misunderstood everything greatly.” Zhongli says fiercely.
“I’m not that stupid to not crosscheck what Osial told me.” Childe hisses before he slumps downward, unable to bear the onslaught of pheromones anymore.
“Childe!” Zhongli exclaims as he catches him in time. He holds his waist and helps him to stand upright.
In his cloudy haze, he alarmingly feels slight amusement when he sees how the dark haired alpha scrunches his nose.
Zhongli looks like a disgruntled cat.
A very disgruntled, possessive cat, with the way he rubs his wrist on his neck and scent gland.
“I’m feeling faint because of your explosive pheromones and you’re scenting me instead?” Childe scoffs incredulously.
“I can’t help it, I really hate the way you smell like another’s.” Zhongli growls as he looks around for a bench or somewhere they can sit and talk. “I am still really angry right now, Childe. But now I understand that you have been played by him.”
“What do you mean?” Childe asks. He sighs before he defeatedly leaning on the alpha’s shoulder and secretly basking in the other’s warmth.
“I will explain, but let’s move to a more comfortable place first. You’re in no condition to stand anymore.”
The Harbinger scoffs. “Whose fault do you think that is?”
“You ignited my anger.” Zhongli says guiltlessly.
Childe yelps when his world tilts and he’s suddenly being princess-carried by the alpha. “Your Majesty!”
“Another use of my title and I will purposefully walk through the ball rather than the hidden, private passage nearby.” Zhongli threatens as he walks out of the pavilion.
At this, Childe shuts his mouth off and purses his lips in annoyance.
“When you said somewhere comfortable, I didn’t think it’d be your private chamber, Your Majesty.” Childe sarcastically says as he lets himself be put down on the edge of the alpha’s humongous bed. “How scandalous for an Emperor.”
“Actually, it’s precisely because I’m an Emperor that I can get away with this.” Zhongli says with a confident smile. He’s gotten a lot calmer, especially since Childe has smelled like him instead of Osial.
That fucker.
Zhongli takes a deep sigh to calm his mind once more. He kneels in front of the Harbinger and starts to untie the omega’s shoelaces.
“Zhongli?”
He ignores the confused call of his name. Instead, he takes off both of Childe’s boots. “It will be more comfortable for you.” He says to the omega, before swiftly taking his own outer clothes off until he’s in his shirt and pants. He then offers his hand expectantly and Childe only gives him an are-you-serious look.
“If you truly don't wish to be here, you’d have bolted out when I tried to take off your boots. Or when we’re walking to my chamber.” He points out. “It’ll be uncomfortable for you to wear those clothing while we have our overdue conversation.”
“You always give such smart excuses.” Childe mutters under his breath, but he still gives him his outer suit and vest. “So tell me, what do you mean with me being played?” The omega demands.
“What did he tell you?” He asks as he takes a seat beside him.
“Why would I tell you that?” Childe throws the question back.
Zhongli sighs. His omega is very… feisty indeed. “I don’t know what he told you, or didn’t tell you in this case, but if you mentioned being a mistress, then he must’ve told you about the court.” He starts. “It’s true that most of them were against our union initially, but I gave them two ultimatums. First, is that you will be my one and only Empress no matter what and no matter how. The second is that I will step down from my seat and Guizhong will rise as the Empress instead.” He smiles knowingly at the surprised look on the omega’s face. “She is still of Imperial blood, albeit from a different Clan. Liyue was originally ruled by two kinds of Imperial blood after all so it shouldn’t matter much. Additionally, there’s nothing going on between me and her. I admit, I entertained the idea of having her as my Empress once because it’s a convenient solution for us both but then I realized, as you said before, it’d be a great disservice for both of us as well.” He confesses honestly. “So essentially, you’re only given a piece of information, which was also being twisted by Osial.”
Childe’s little flabbergasted with the revelation. “But I asked my men to check-”
“Then perhaps your men have heard from his people. Or maybe it’s too vague that it’ll match up with whatever he’s told you.” Zhongli says. “Should I summon my court right here right now then? Would that be enough proof for you?” He challenges. “I’ve mentioned this to you previously. I never had the intention to wed before I met you. My omega will be only you or none at all.” He firmly declares.
Childe sighs annoyedly as he rubs his face. “Why did he do that then? What would he gain from it?”
“That, I do not know.” Zhongli exhales roughly. “But he’s very… mischievous, sometimes bordering on being a real migraine. He’s also tends to be envious so,” He takes the omega’s chin in his hand. “Perhaps he’s fallen for you too.”
“Impossible.” Childe refutes.
“Oh, love. Have you not noticed how enticing you are?” Zhongli whispers. He grips the back of Childe’s neck and notes happily at the obviously ragged breath the other immediately takes. Another rise of possessiveness washes over him again and he pushes the omega down, before caging him with his body.
“Zhongli.” Chidle hisses. However, unlike the bristling, defensive hiss he showed earlier, this one is more subdued and sounds like an embarrassment rather than rejection.
“Childe.” Zhongli purrs his name in response. “I’m getting concerned, love. It seems that you’ve garnered so much unwanted attention when I was away. This won’t do.” He says as he lowers his head.
Childe is his. Only his.
“You’re only meant for me.” He whispers darkly on top of the younger’s ear and Childe visibly shudders at the treatment. Childe’s fresh scent begins to fill the room in tandem with his own pheromones and he likes how their scents are mixed together.
“See.” Zhongli whispers. “Your body is responding nicely to me.” He delightfully says as he nuzzles his head on the younger’s conjecture. Childe’s pheromone directly hits his nose and there’s nothing else ever smells so delicious and mouth watering to him before. His teeth ache and his instinct roars for him to take and claim Childe before any other alpha usurps his rightful place.
“Be my mate, Childe.” He growls. “My strong, feisty, beautiful omega mate.” He says as he mouths the other’s neck. His teeth grazes on Childe’s unmarked scent gland and the Harbinger visibly shudders again while letting out a breathless moan. Happy with the reaction, Zhongli starts to gently bite and licks the sensitive gland.
“Zhongli...” Childe cries out as his hands scratches his back. The intense sensation from the alpha’s teasing is overwhelming him and he’s not ready for the onslaught of pleasure running through his body.
“Shh, it’s okay.” He hushes gently. Steadily, he starts to take off the omega’s clothing. “Let’s not resist what’s always meant to happen, love.”
.
.
When the sun rises on the next day, Liyue has gained its rightful Empress.
Bonus
Guizhong’s laughs echo loudly across the open area as Childe sips his tea in embarrassment. They’re having an evening tea on the alpha’s side wing’s balcony, which gives them the view of the flower garden in the Palace. Zhongli is still busy seeing off all the emissaries who will depart this evening.
His entourage will also leave without him. The purebred alpha apparently has communicated with Her Highness -and subsequently his parents- behind his back. He has asked for an extra time so he will be able to stay here for an additional week, before Zhongli will personally go to Snezhnaya with him to formalize their courting completely.
Or so that’s the plan.
The bite mark on his scent gland and how he still smells like the alpha definitely says otherwise.
“Oh dear.” Guizhong wipes her eyes after her laughs have decreased to chuckles. “Why would I request Tsaritsa to send you if I’m truly his omega bride?” She mirthfully says.
He shoots up from his cup of tea in shock. “What?”
“I saw you training with your men when I was passing by with Tsaritsa. She proudly told me that you're her Harbingers. I noticed you don't seem to look like an alpha and I asked her. She didn't tell me in great detail but she confirmed that you're not an alpha since most of the alphas can’t keep up with your strength - which instantly reminds me of Zhongli.” She explains with a fond sigh. “He’s always wanted a strong partner. Someone who can fight, independent, but also intelligent. Sadly, as you perhaps have noticed, our omegas mostly tend to be delicate. Strong, but delicate as a vase. He wants someone who can be on par with him, rather than below him. I’m glad that my hunch is right. Both of you are a perfect match for each other.” She hums happily. “However, I didn’t expect him to move that fast.” Guizhong eyes the still fresh wound on his neck. “He must have truly feared losing you.”
Childe just sighs. “He’s just very possessive.”
Guizhong snorts. “Of course, you’re really one of a kind, Childe. I would personally smack him if he didn’t officialize you as his mate soon.” She says.
“I don’t know how to respond to that, but” He looks directly at her. “Once the customary three days for newly mated pairs is done, I am going to kill Lord Osial for this deceivery.” He smiles cheerily
“Oh, don’t worry Childe. I’ll personally make sure that he won’t run away when it happens.” She responds with a smile on her face as well.
.
.
Apparently, Osial did that out of amusement.
Amusement.
The blue haired alpha thought it’d be fun to mess with Zhongli, but he’s ultimately dragged as the unwilling victim for his trickery.
Osial officially becomes the first person in Liyue to ever taste the ruthlessness of his twin blades, before he’s banished from his post for a long, long time.
