Merlin is so so cool and bamf and hot. It takes awhile to get to the scene below (chapter 98 in fact) but the entire story is brilliant and funny and a little sad. Not much angst, but when it happens it punches you lovingly in the face. With a brick.
Anyway, bamf Merlin (spoilers):
The truth is,” Merlin goes on, “it was in my best interest to have the world come apart at the seams as soon as bloody well possible, seeing as the giant prat was supposed to come back in ‘Albion’s greatest need.’ Shame the prophecy wasn’t worth the parchment no one ever bothered to write it down on.” Merlin shakes his head, a mirthless grin pulling his lips up at the edges. “Stop the wars. What would’ve been the point? By about the sixth, and still no great and miraculous resurrection? You think it didn’t cross my mind that Arthur might not ever come back? You think it didn’t occur to me that I might be the butt of some gigantic cosmic joke? It did. I know my own luck and… well. So tell me why I should go about fixing a world like that? Explain to me why I should lift a finger to protect a humanity that doesn’t include him?”
