Kazuha, behind his screen, laughed.
Scaramouche was as much an ass on stream as he was in real life. There was bile in his voice rather than honey. But his eyes were the first in a long time that looked at Kazuha and didn't see money or fame or anything else he could suck out of him-- he just saw him.
He threw his phone across the room and squeezed his pillow. The mere memory of the way Scaramouche looked at him that day. . Archons, it made his stomach twist and his chest tight.

Room 201. Kazuha pushed open the door.
Except, against all expectation, there was no Xiao. There was no Albedo. Only a boy who at once looked all too familiar and all too different. His shoulders had broadened since highschool, hair sliced short and figure finally gaining a little bit of definition. A walking, hotter version of a vague memory Kazuha's been dreaming of for years.
He dropped the food, letting the almond tofu topple to the ground.
And the stranger's eyes flickered to him in the doorway. Those same eyes Kazuha remembers staring into for hours and hours.
"Kaedehara?" he breathed the name so softly, in a childlike awe.
Kazuha took a small, hesitant step forward. He blinked. He inhaled. And then he exhaled the name like he hadn't properly breathed in so long, "Scaramouche.."
A smile crept onto his face at the sound of it. Like that name was always meant to be spoken in Kazuha's voice.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, closing the door behind him, walking in. It almost felt wrong being too close to Scaramouche, so he stood an arm's length away, taking the boy in like he was still not quite real.
"What am I doing here?" he asked.
"I thought you were in Inazuma."
"Kaedehara," he said, "I'm here working with Xiao and Albedo."
His mouth fell open, "No way-- you're the-- how? Why? How could I not have-" he smiled, "Archons, can I hug you?"
Scaramouche looked at him like he was insane. "The fuck."
And Kazuha pounced on him. He wrung his arms around his neck and holy shit, Scaramouche was taller than him now. But he still smelled the same. Had the same foul personality and the same midnight eyes Kazuha fell in love with.
His heart skipped a beat.
Kazuha could never have romance. It was a foreign concept, one he wrote and sung about because it was a part of his job but could never reach and take hold for his own.
But he had it once, a high school year ago, and it was with the very person in front of him.

The Gods hated Kazuha. Maybe he pissed one off in a past life or something, because the very last day Scaramouche had in Inazuma, it was storming.
Of course it was.
So when the session finally ended and Xiao, Albedo and Scaramouche walked out of the studio– Kazuha stood there, smiling awkwardly, black umbrella against the heavy downpour. And he outstretched his hand to Scaramouche, like they were in a movie, and just said, Come with me. Let’s get lost for a while.
And Albedo grimaced, and he looked to Xiao, and they shared a sort of exasperated sigh. Because although they did not know what was going on between the two, they knew Scaramouche was leaving tomorrow. They knew Kazuha hated rainstorms, but had stood in one for Scaramouche, and there had never been so much unbridled adoration in a person’s eyes as there was in Kazuha’s when Scaramouche, after a long while, took his hand and mumbled, I have to a fucking cancel a meeting for this.

5 years ago.
-Highschool.
"We're going to get caught!" Kazuha whisper-screamed. His voice is high-pitched and his figure scrawny, untouched yet by puberty.
"Oh, please," Scaramouche rolled his eyes and waved him off, "As if I'd ever let anything happen to you."
Vaguely, you could hear the mull of a teacher's lecture in a classroom where they were supposed to be. Not climbing the secluded staircase to the highest floor of the school, being stupid teenagers because that was exactly all they were at the time.
Kazuha is a boy and Scaramouche is his bad influence and the world has yet to know their names in hashtags and interviews and magazine covers. All they are is stupid teenagers, and they are in love.
Scaramouche reaches the top floor– met with two metal doors and long bars for handles on each side. A huge chain wraps itself between them, padlock in the middle.
"Fuck," he breathes. He kicks at the door, chains jangling, but it doesn't budge. "I didn't think this part through."
His boyfriend walks forward with a fond sigh, pulling a pin out of his bangs. He jams it in, twists– and click. The lock clammers to the ground and he smiles like it was the easiest thing to do in the world.
"Shall we go?"
God, Scaramouche was so whipped.
Upon pushing open the doors, they were met with a huge gust of wind. It clung to Kazuha like a desperate boyfriend, his hair floating in it and the sun kissing his smile.
All it did was get in the way for Scaramouche. But if it made Kazuha that happy, he could handle it. If it made Kazuha happy, he would handle anything.
"Can we just stay here until class ends?" Kazuha asks, walking towards the gauze wall fence and gazing over its view. "Can you just stay with me?"
Scaramouche came up next to him. Their shoulders bumped and they stared at the same world and for a brief moment, he forgot why he hated it. For a brief moment, everything was okay.
Kazuha didn't care that a teacher may spot them, and Scaramouche didn't care that one would hunt them down and lock them in detention because it didn't matter because they would be locked up together and nothing in the world could ever hurt them up here. He wouldn't let anything in the world hurt Kazuha ever again.
"Always," he said. "As long as you want me to, I'll stay, Kaedehara."
And Kaedehara smiled. Because they were so in love that the rest of their lives felt so small, like they could catch it in the palms of their hands and give it to each other-- and yes, of course they were only sixteen, and at sixteen Kaedehara already knew he would stay in Inazuma forever to be with Scaramouche.
"I'll stay too," he said, "I promise."

Kazuha and Scaramouche are not the outliers to that rule.

-Present Day.
Kazuha dreams.
That he is still taller than Scaramouche, scrawny with a high-pitched voice and in his second year of highschool. He has never held a microphone or stood on a stage. He does not break up with his boyfriend and move to Liyue and pursue some idol life that he'll realize he doesn't even really want when he's already in too deep to back out.
What could've been, he thinks. And it's a thought that haunts all his worst nightmares and greatest fantasies. What could've been if he kept the promise and just. . stayed.

He rolled his eyes.
Kazuha: You know you don't have to curse in every sentence, right?
It's a back and forth they do. Calling every night for hours but never really saying anything. Because it's been three months since they reunited, that glorious day, and Kazuha still hasn't told him anything.
I still love you, he did not say.
I wish I stayed, he did not say.
I'm sorry, he did not say. And he would never say.
Kazuha: When I'm in Inazuma, you're not allowed to be busy.
Scaramouche: Duh.
Kazuha: Not for a single second.
Scaramouche: You better not be busy either or I'll kill you.
Kazuha: Alright. Promise?
Kazuha was not very good at keeping the promises he made, yet he continued to make them.

INAZUMA AIRPORT🛫
"I can't believe I had to sit through an 11-hour flight in a shirt that looked like a disco ball." Kazuha crosses his arms in an X over his torso. "Do you know how traumatized the old man beside me was!?"
"BWAHAHA I SAW HIS FACE--"
They lug their suitcases. It's 12:07AM so they pray that upon exiting the glass doors, there isn't a sea of fans or paparrazi. And there isn't.
But standing behind that red tape line that separates the landing passengers and the visitors, is a boy with hair like the night sky and eyes like it too.
( Scaramouche, Scaramouche, Scaramouche-- )
Upon realizing this, Kazuha's mind reminds himself of three things. 1) He is in front of Venti. 2) He is in front of Aether. 3) He is in a very public space and could very easily be filmed. Nobody knows and nobody should know that he is in love with Scaramouche.
One step forward. Two steps. Three.
Then Scaramouche turns, eyes meeting Kazuha's. He looks at the boy he's wanted for so, so many months and suddenly nothing else has ever mattered.
He abandons his suitcase and runs, even weighed down by sleep deprivation, even in that shitty Ogura Textile outfit, even as he trips on a step and runs out of breath-- There is no reality wherein at this very moment, Kazuha does not run to Scaramouche.
"Kaede-"
He jumps into his arms and for the first time in months, Kazuha breathes.
He holds him as though he is the only solid thing in the world. He breathes into his chest, having to inhale and exhale to keep himself from crying.
"You're real," Kazuha says, voice gone, eyes wide with disbelief. "You're real and you're right here."
And Scaramouche grips onto him so hard he could shatter. "I'm here."
Kazuha questions, not for the first time, how he ever could've chosen to leave this person.
Xiao sighs. Venti, and Aether from across the room finally understand.

He throws the pillow into Scaramouche's head. Because he's right and Kazuha knows it. What was he thinking? Honestly! He can't go around pouncing on people when he's Kaedehara Kazuha!!
Scaramouche's room was like a hotel one. All the furniture was black. Dim, purple LEDs framed the ceiling, and though the window next to his bed was tiny, it had a gorgeous view of Inazuma city.
He looked out it, at the falling sakura blossoms-- the trees signature of this land that Liyue could never grow. At the storm, because of course Inazuma was always storming. At the foxes. The moon. Everything he didn't know he missed.
Home, Kazuha thought.
Then he looked to Scaramouche, pointing his remote at the TV and mocking every movie option that he scrolled past. At that frown he always wore and those self-trimmed bangs that would look horrible on anyone but him.
Home, Kazuha thought again.
"What about you, Kaedehara?"
He sighed blissfully, arms hugging his knees. "Any movie is fine, so long as I watch it with you."
Scaramouche blinked, frowned, and rolled his eyes in the same second. "Don't pull the sappy shit with me. It's gross."
"It's also only the truth."
"...You missed me that much?"
Kazuha smiled into his arms. "Yea," he said. "Of course I did."

first of all let me say how much of a MENACE this man was to drop the album with NO PRIOR ADVERITISEMENT AT ALL?? AND APPARENTLY THE OTHER 4NEMO MEMBERS DIDNT KNOW ABT IT EITHER. so kazuha produced a whole album in secret, woke up one october morning and decided, yep. lets release this. AND DIDNT SAY ANYTHING?????
second of all kazuhas always said in interviews he never really had a love life except for 1 ex in highschool-- up until the WIRED one (which we all remember took the world by storm) where he said he had someone he was interested in. and of all 9 tracks, all of them seem to have the same vibe towards whoevers hes writing abt-- so safe to assume the entire album is dedicated to this 1 Mystery Person (LUCKY MF WHEN IS IT MY TURN)

i think ive actually figured kazuhas mystery crush is and im not even clickbaiting. its a small twitch streamer by the name of scaramouche. channel here.
1) our first mention of Mystery Crush is from this WIRED interview. its safe to assume the crush is smn kazuha has known since before that interview.
2) what happened a month before that interview? the viral video of xiao (kazuha's fellow band member), albedo (kazuha's best friend and pianist) and scaramouche dancing to 威風堂々 (ifuudoudou) was published
3) id always found it odd xiao knew the identity of Mystery Crush™ before the rest of 4NEMO (esp bc we know kazuha doesnt play favourites so why would he tell 1 band member but not ae and venti??) but it makes sense now. who else knew? albedo. and whos the common factor between albedo and xiao? SCARAMOUCHE
4) one of the main reasons this shit was such a mystery is bc kazuha and scaramouche have virtually no online relationship. i guarantee 80% of u dont even know who scaramouche is, and 99% of u didnt know kazuha and scaramouche even knew each other. BUT THEY DO. LOOK AT THIS:

5) KAZUHA CALLS HIM SCARA. if u watch scaramouches lives you know he does NOT let people call him ANY NICKNAME WHATSOEVER. BUT HE LETS KAZUHA CALL HIM SCARA???
6) I Want To See You is an incredible album but it never outright tells u why the writer cant actually just... see the person they want to see. but kazuha gives it away in this line; 'We're mountains, and oceans, and timezones apart'. Timezones. they cant see each other bc theyre in different NATIONS. and who is nations away from kazuha??? SCARAMOUCHE.
7) I Want To See You's ending song 'i see you' basically confirms that kazuha ended up seeing the person he wanted to see. and when did this album drop? THE WEEK KAZUHA LANDED IN INAZUMA. i swear it lines up perfectly. HE MET SCARAMOUCHE WHEN HE LANDED, WROTE THE LAST SONG ABOUT FINALLY MEETING HIM, AND THEN DROPPED THE ALBUM. we all know kazuha hates sitting on album releases. AND MAYBE THE REASON THERE WAS LIKE 0 PROMOTION FOR THIS ALBUM IS BECAUSE THE LAST SONG WASNT EVEN WRITTEN UNTIL HE LANDED
8) I Want To See You's opening song is called 'Electric'. we know damn well kazuha would not write an EDM song for no reason when his style has always been soft melodies. but who is known for liking EDM? WHO LITERALLY HAS A FRICKIN LIGHTNING BOLT AS THEIR TWITCH ICON??? SCARAMOUCHE!
9) HAVE YOU LISTENED TO REPUTATIONS??? SURE WE ALL ASSUMED IT WAS ABT kazuha being a kpop idol and loving a nonfamous person but what if it was abt loving a TWITCH STREAMER who had SUCH A DIFFERENT AUDIENCE. bc kazuha wouldnt title the stong Reputations if it was abt his status alone as an idol. ITS ABT TWO STASUSES. MULTIPLE STATUSES. ONE OF AN IDOL AND ONE OF A STREAMER.

I'm a cashier at Uyuu Restaurant. My branch is located at an airport, which I cannot specify. Today, around midnight I saw 4NEMO leaving a plane from Liyue to Inazuma. There was a man who I didn't recognize waiting, and I saw Kazuha run up and hug him when they saw each other.
I just checked out Scaramouche's Twitch and yes, that's the man.

Kazuha: . .You haven't gone online today, have you?
Scaramouche: No. You know I hate checking social media.
Kazuha: . . .
Scaramouche: Why? Should I? Is something wrong?
Kazuha: Don't check. You can go check after the call just- before you do, I want to talk to you a final time.
Scaramouche: A final time? The hell, aren't we meeting up tomorrow?
Kazuha: I mean. . once you see what's going on, you might not wanna go with me.
Scaramouche: Wh- oh for fucks sake, did you get into a scandal? You know I don't care about that shit.
Kazuha: . . .
Scaramouche: Are you okay?
Kazuha: No.
Scaramouche: And why??
Kazuha: Because you're going to hate me when you find out.
Scaramouche: You're worrying me.
Kazuha: You think I did something horrible?
Scaramouche: As if I'd ever think that about you. You're worrying me because you sound two seconds away from breaking into tears, you dumb fuck.
Kazuha: Well, I kinda am.
Scaramouche: I'm heading over.
Kazuha stiffened.
Kazuha: ..What?
Scaramouche: You're at your hotel, right?
Kazuha: W-wait- my bandmates are here-
Scaramouche: I don't care. You're not okay.
Kazuha: You could be spotted and get involved in my scandal-
Scaramouche: I don't care. I just want you to be okay.
Kazuha: Hey, wai-!
Call ended.

It is sappy. It is childish and silly and foolish and- well, Scaramouche does show up at his door.
It was like a scene from a romance novel. Opening that door and seeing Scaramouche, standing in the midnight moonlight, the person he's wanted to see for so fucking long. He thought that finally flying over would quell the insatiable yearning, but it only made it worse. As if Kaedehara's entire life's accumulation was a heart and it beat solely for Scaramouche.
When was the last time he ever allowed himself to indulge like this? To see someone he wanted to see. To love who he wanted to love. To be sappy and stupid and not have everything down to the clothes he wore be a calculated move for the eyes of the media.
"You're a moron" was the very first thing he said, in a quiet, fond voice-- before letting him in and Scaramouche replied back,
"Are you okay?"
"No, my life is over."
"The internet loves you. I refuse to believe they could go from obsession to cancelling you that quick."
"They don't hate me."
"Then what happened?"
"They.." Kazuha trailed off, voice into a murmur, "found out about something they didn't need to."
"Something bad?"
"Something stupid."
"And you didn't want them to know."
"Not-- them," Kazuha froze. It was difficult. Baring someone your wounds when you didn't want them to know the wound had their face smacked in the middle of it.
"You didn't want someone to know," Scaramouche squinted, "Who?"
"Why do you even care?"
"Of course I care!" Scaramouche yelled. Like he wasn't known for being an uncaring asshole. Like the way he looked at Kazuha wasn't enough to make him bend and buckle and fall head over heels everytime and it wasn't so unbelievably ludacris that he drove all the way to his hotel room in the middle of the night just because Kazuha sounded sad.
"You," he said. "I didn't want you to know."
Scaramouche blinked once, twice, and Kazuha prepared for everything to be over.
"Me?"
"Yes, the scandal involves you. Now you're affiliated with one the hugest boy groups in the world, I'm sorry."
"Me?" Scaramouche asked again.
"Yes, I didn't want you to know."
He looked at him, inhaled, and exhaled. "Then I'll just never go on social media ever again."
"Hah," Kazuha laughed, "You can't."
"Why not? It's not like I care for that fake bullshit anyway--"
"It's not fake, it's the truth."
"What kind of truth about you would cause a media scandal--"
"That I'm in love with you, maybe?" he said. And then everything else went quiet.
Kazuha thinks back to what feels like a million years ago, before he ever knew fame and Scaramouche ever touched a streaming set up. When they were two highschoolers on a staircase in love with each other and everything was so simple, so easy. (He should've never left Inazuma, he should've never left Inazuma, he should've never--)
He thinks back to opening a door and seeing his shirtless ex and the creeping realization that he was going to fall in love again, and he could not avoid it because it was Scaramouche.
In the end, that was what it boiled down to, wasn't it? That no matter what, somehow, for some reason, Kazuha was bound to fall for Scaramouche. It was like some unspoken rule, unwritten prophecy.
It's never been anyone else.
"Holy shit," Scaramouche said. Kazuha braced for impact. "Me too, stupid."
"What?"
Scaramouche moved closer. "You're such an idiot, did you really think I didn't feel the same?"
"What?" Kazuha backed away, pressed against the wall.
"I said 'Me too.' I'm in love with you and I have been since highschool."
"What?" Kazuha couldn't move any further back, but Scaramouche could only move closer. His breath ghosted over Kazuha's lips, warm and only a centimetre away.
"Can I kiss you?"
Kazuha blinked. Like the question was not directed at him, but at the Gods-- could he kiss him? Was Kazuha allowed, after all this time, to love him again?
And then he kisses him. Slowly. Fervently. With the waiting of a decade all turning to dust. He didn't feel or taste real. Nothing felt real anymore. Kazuha could write this into a song.
Scaramouche pulled back. "What's not possible again?"
And Kazuha kissed him, to shut him up.
