Assorted Correspondence between P. Sextus and C. Hect

Summary:

Some of the pages of letters and letters that Cam and Pal wrote to each other during Nona.

A combination of mundane domesticity, Sixth House style research, and existential longing.

Now an incredible podfic! https://archiveofourown.org/works/61571596

Chapter Text

Dear Warden,

Nona stayed conscious and alert for 9 hours, 37 minutes today, taken cumulatively. Longest span of wakefulness was 4 hours, 5 minutes.

Got her to drink sufficient water and eat some rice gruel. She is getting better at handling the spoon but it’s not always easy to tell because of how much she hates eating. Point in favor of Harrowhark. Nav ate like she was starving back at Canaan House.

New vocabulary: cupboard, “washing up”, sleeves, elbow, toes, itchy, tired, radio, buttons, voluptuous (blame Pyrrha for that one).

Frequently uses: no, stop, don’t, why. So do I, come to think of it. Open question if she’s just imitating me.

Her language acquisition has commonalities with aphasia patients relearning speech. I narrate what I’m doing all day, and sometimes she points at something and nods and looks relieved when I say its name, as though she’s familiar with the concept and the word was on the tip of her tongue.

That said, she’s suddenly obsessed with my ears for some reason and keeps trying to stick her fingers in them. I showed her in the mirror that she had her own, but it didn’t help. If this behavior is characteristic of Harrowhark or Gideon, I certainly never observed it.

Cam,

You’re right about general physical conditioning, but the sword should stay as self-directed as possible. N. ate 4 crackers with jam and drank some water. Pyrrha says to pick up more bleach if you can. The laundry in the blue bin is clean but didn’t have time to fold. Sorry for the brevity. Talk more tonight,

Warden,

Nona ate a small object at approx. noon. She had something in her mouth and wouldn’t spit it out, and when I managed to pry her teeth apart, she’d already swallowed it. I think it was either a bottle cap or a twist tie from the bread bag. She seems fine, but I could use a second opinion.

Also she bit me when I had my fingers in her mouth, so we had a talk about that. She started crying when she saw I was unhappy, but seemed confused as to why. I had to show her the indent of her teeth on my hand and explain that not everyone healed as quickly as she did.

Not sure what to make of the pica. I haven’t caught her swallowing anything before, though she has compulsively chewed the walls, sofa, her hair, my hair, etc. Suggest trying her on mineral supplements if her food intake remains at this level, though could easily be psychological.

-Cam

P.S. How are you still cold in my body? Every time I come back, you’ve unrolled my sleeves.
