Sweet Dreams

Summary:

After the showdown with the Hyde and Crackstone, Wednesday just wants to sleep. But she can't do that when her roommate is having a nightmare so Wednesday goes to help her and confessions are made.

Notes:

Wrote this in one sitting which is rare for me. Still figuring out how to write Wednesday, she is a complex character to write not going to lie. I hope I've done her some justice.

Hope ya'll enjoy reading :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Wednesday Addams didn't take comfort in many things in life. It was one of the things she prided herself on, not having to rely on anything other than herself to make life bearable.

One of the only things Wednesday did long for however was a decent night's sleep. Her dreams were often filled with the screams of her enemies and usually revolved around a gruesome death or perhaps several if she was lucky, so she always ensured to get a full eight hours each night to maximise her experience of a dream.

The lull to complete darkness every night also appealed to her as it was the closest she could get to leaving the mortal realm as of yet. Although there had been a few close encounters with death of late.

Take tonight for example. Wednesday had been kidnapped, stabbed and shot with an arrow. On any other day Wednesday would have said that sounded enjoyable, but the reality was that Wednesday felt exhausted after dealing with the Hyde, Laurel and Crackstone. She'd already been forced to send Thing off to oversee the Tyler's transportation as she didn't have the energy to do it herself.

All she wanted was to sleep.

But it was right when she was at the precipice of falling asleep when she heard a noise.

It was a light grumble at first and Wednesday was more than happy to ignore but that's when it got louder.

Wednesday huffed in annoyance before opening her eyes, determined to find the source of the sound and stop it at soon as possible.

Fortunately for Wednesday, her eyes adjusted to the darkness quickly as years of hiding in the family crypts or in hidden passageways just waiting for the opportunity to scare her brother helped to enhance her night vision.

However this unfortunately meant that Wednesday soon discovered what the source of the noise was almost immediately.

Wednesday stared at the bed across the room and saw her roommate twitching and muttering. Now this wasn't completely out of character for Enid, as the werewolf sometimes talked in her sleep. An act which happened less frequently after Wednesday started to throw a pillow in the girl's direction when she became too talkative.

However, this time Wednesday knew something was wrong. The light that shone through the circular window cast a multicoloured pattern to appear on Enid's face, a face which was currently contorted into a look of fear and pain.

Normally, Wednesday enjoyed the suffering of others but for some reason it almost caused her physical pain to see the blonde so distressed. And not the good kind of pain either. No, seeing Enid this way caused a pit to form in Wednesday's stomach.

"Enid?" Wednesday's voice rang out in the quiet room.

No response.

Wednesday's desire for sleep seemed to fade away as she swung her legs out from under her duvet and she before she realised what she was doing she had crossed over to the colourful side of the room.

Standing over the sleeping blonde, Wednesday could see the girl more clearly. Wednesday could see that Enid's eyes moved quickly behind her closed eyelids and her chest moved up and down rapidly as though she struggled for breath. Enid's lips would twitch occasionally as though she was speaking but no sound came out.

"Enid." Wednesday tried again, her voice a little firmer than before.

Enid seemed to flinch at the sound and she made a whimpering sound as though she had trodden on a thorn whilst in wolf form.

Wednesday made a mental note to not use that tone again and instead decided she would have to change tactics.

Wednesday crouched down next to the bed and leaned against it, managing to hold back the noise of disgust she felt from touching the bright bedsheets.

Wednesday held a hand out towards the girl, hesitating a little as she did before tentatively tapping the girl's arm.

"Enid. Wake up." Wednesday had softened her tone from before and shook the girl as gently as possible.

"No...stop... please." Enid mumbled as a scowl appeared on her face.

Wednesday shook the girl again as her concern grew.

"Don't hurt her." Enid whispered but her words were clear this time.

Wednesday's eyes widened as she began to piece together what the girl was dreaming about.

"Enid!" Wednesday was more forceful this time as she wanted to break Enid from her nightmare as soon as possible.

Enid sat bolt upright as she woke with a start, sweat dripped from her brow and her breathing was heavy as her eyes darted around the room.

Eventually, Enid's gaze landed on the ravenette who still had a hand on the girl's arm. It seemed to take a moment for Enid's eyes to focus on the girl in front of her.

"Wednesday? Are you really here?" Enid's eyes brimmed with tears and her voice was hoarse as she spoke.

Now she would deny it if anyone had seen her, but Wednesday actually gave the blonde a small smile before taking the blonde's hand in her own.

"It's really me. You were having a bad dream." Wednesday squeezed the girl's hand slightly as though to reassure her that she really was there.

Enid's face seemed to crumple then, and tears fell freely.

Wednesday froze at the sight.

She was never very good at helping when people were upset. But as Enid's body began to shake as she sobbed, Wednesday knew she at least had to try.

She could do this. She could offer comfort to someone. She could do it for Enid.

Wednesday moved from her crouched position and sat next to Enid on the bed before pulling the girl in close to her.

Enid didn't hesitate in holding on tightly to the girl as she pressed her face in the crook of Wednesday's neck.

Wednesday could feel hot tears run down her neck and so she held the girl tighter too.

It had been a long time since Wednesday had been in this position with someone. The last person to hold her this way had been her mother, who cared for her as she mourned the loss of her dear scorpion, Nero.

Remembering what her mother did to comfort her, Wednesday began to rub circles into the blonde's back.

"It's okay, Enid. You're okay." Wednesday whispered to the girl.

"I didn't get there in time." Enid spoke through shaky breaths.

"I lost you." Enid's voice cracked as she let out another wave of tears.

Oh. That's what it had been about.

Wednesday's black heart broke a little at the sound of Enid's sobs.

"I'm right here Enid. You didn't lose me. You can feel my heart beating, can't you?" Wednesday asked.

Wednesday felt a slight nod against her neck.

"You were so strong today, and incredibly brave too. You saved me, Enid." Wednesday reassured as much as possible, trying to focus on the girl's own qualities and not the werewolf side as much as possible.

Wednesday continued to rub the girl's back as she held her until Enid stopped shaking and she only sniffled occasionally.

For a moment the pair just sat there and listened to the wind outside.

It was Enid who pulled herself back first.

Wednesday felt an unusual pang of disappointment as the warmth disappeared. Perhaps she was going soft afterall, not that she'd ever admit it.

Enid's eyes were red and puffy as she looked down at her hand, her fingers still interwoven with Wednesday's own.

"And you said you weren't a hugger." Enid teased, a small smile on her face.

"I'm not." Wednesday said bluntly as her eyes bore into their linked hands.

"But I can make allowances for you." Wednesday continued as she glanced up and looked at Enid.

Enid's smile grew at that and Wednesday could feel her heart flutter.

"Are you okay?" Wednesday asked quietly.

It was a loaded question and Wednesday knew that the girl clearly wasn't doing alright but she didn't know what else to say.

"It's been a bit of a rough day." Enid admitted as she moved to sit cross-legged. Her words were a hell of an understatement in Wednesday's opinion.

Wednesday found herself rubbing the back of Enid's hand with her thumb. An act of kindness she had learned from her father, as he would hold her hand this way when she was still small enough to want such things and not push them away as she did now.

"It will get easier, you know. The weight you carry will lighten over time." Wednesday offered, it was something she had heard her father say to her one of her cousins after her aunt had passed.

"And what about the weight you carry? It's okay for you to feel upset as well."

Enid felt Wednesday's thumb stop moving as the girl tensed up.

"I am fine, Enid." Wednesday said curtly.

Enid nearly laughed at that.

"You nearly died Wednesday! You were betrayed by someone you cared about and then you got hurt really badly and you could have died."

"Tyler's betrayal was... unexpected I admit. But it's nothing I can't manage." Wednesday voice didn't waver but it seemed as though Wednesday was reassure herself more than anyone.

Enid sighed as she could feel Wednesday withdrawing from her.

"For once Wednesday don't rise above your emotions. Feel them." Enid squeezed Wednesday's hand to try and emphasise her point.

Wednesday thought for a moment as she stared at a loose thread on the bedsheet.

"Fine. I feel angry. I'm angry because I let myself be fooled so easily." Wednesday spoke through gritted teeth.

"I'm angry because I let someone in and they hurt me." Enid could feel the grip on her hand tighten but remained quiet.

"But mostly I'm angry because you got hurt protecting me." Wednesday admitted, as she recalled the deep gashes Enid had when she found Wednesday after the fight with Tyler. Wednesday normally loved the sight of blood but on Enid, it just sickened her.

At the thought of the injury, Wednesday found herself staring at the red lines that now marked Enid's once unblemished face.

Wednesday wasn't sure what possessed her to do so but she raised her free hand and ghosted over the lines before cupping Enid's cheek gently.

"You are more important to me than you know cara mia." Wednesday whispered softly as she stared at Enid, her eyes darting to the girl's lips for a moment.

Enid felt her heart race again, although for an entirely different reason this time as she mimicked Wednesday's glances before leaning in close.

The kiss was tender and sweet but said a thousands words.

Enid's hands moved unconsciously, one threaded itself behind Wednesday's neck and played with the fine hair at the nape of her neck whilst the other untangled itself from Wednesday's grasp before settling on the girl's waist.

Wednesday freed hand now cupped Enid's other cheek.

The kiss seemed to last a lifetime before the pair eventually moved apart for air,  their heads leaning against each other as they breathed heavily.

"You have to forgive yourself Wednesday." Enid whispered as she lightly scratched the nape of Wednesday's neck.

"But I-"

"-Wednesday I made my choice to save you and it's a choice I'd make a thousand times again. So please forgive youself." Enid hoped Wednesday would accept her words and listen to them.

"Okay, I'll try." Wednesday muttered.

Enid smiled before giving her another quick peck on the lips.

"I think that's the quickest you've ever agreed with me." Enid laughed slightly as she pulled back, Wednesday's hands now leaving her cheeks which were now a little flushed.

"That's because you're normally incorrect about whatever we're talking about." Wednesday jabbed, although the smirk on her face took away any bite.

"Oh really? I'll remember that next time I get the urge to kiss you." Enid teased.

"Do you get the urge to kiss me often then Sinclair?" Wednesday fired back, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.

"Pretty much since the day you moved in." Enid admitted, feeling a little embarrassed.

"Seriously?" Wednesday raised an eyebrow at the admission. Maybe she was even worse at reading between the lines than she originally thought.

Enid scoffed. Only Wednesday Addams would be unable to see how attractive she really was.

"Have you looked in the mirror? You're all broody and mysterious and hot. And you dress in some killer outfits. So like how else was I meant to feel?' Enid felt herself go red as she rambled.

"It appears I need to work on my social awareness skills more." Wednesday thought aloud.

"What about Ajax?" Wednesday suddenly asked.

Enid hadn't even thought about the gorgon boy.

"I didn't think I had a chance with you and Ajax was just sorta there so it made me feel... wanted I guess." Enid said thoughtfully.

Wednesday scowled at the thought of letting Enid believe she was unwanted.

"You are wanted. I wanted you before I even realised it myself cara mia." Wednesday spoke honestly, she didn't even mind her casual use of the term of endearment.

"Really?" Enid smiled brightly.

"Those few days you moved into Yoko's made me feel... uncertain and like something was missing." Wednesday admitted.

"Well I'm here now and I'm not going away. No matter how hard you try to get rid of me." Enid smirked as held Wednesday hand once more and squeezed it again.

Wednesday rolled her eyes.

"You're worse than the plague."

"You say the sweetest things Addams." Enid teased.

"Speaking of infectious things, can I please remove myself from this neon nightmare before I go into anaphylatic shock. I found it to be less fun than I originally thought." Wednesday gestured to Enid's brightly coloured bedding.

"Shit. I forgot. Yeah you can move." Enid had a slightly panicked look on her face now.

"Thank you." Wednesday rose from her place on the bed and stood up, her back cracking delightfully as she moved back to her side of the room.

Enid suddenly felt lonely.

Wednesday noticed Enid's downcast look.

"What's wrong?" Wednesday asked as she got back under the covers of her own bed

"You're really far away." Enid muttered.

"This is our usual distance is it not?" Wednesday asked, feeling confused.

"Yeah but after what we did earlier I wanna be close to you." Enid almost whined, maybe it was the wolf instinct to be close rearing its head. Or maybe Enid was just a bit clingy. Either way, she wasn't happy with the distance between her and her roommate? Sorta girlfriend? She'd have to check that later.

"What if I have another nightmare? You don't want to come back here do you?" Enid asked, knowing she had the ravenette on the ropes here.

Wednesday sighed loudly before lifting up the covers.

"Get in."

Enid needed no more persuading than that so quickly raced across the room before getting under the covers too.

Wednesday shuffled back towards the wall to give the blonde some more room but it just seemed as though the girl just moved  closer as well.

The pair didn't touch as Wednesday lay on her back, Enid on her side facing the girl as the quietness settled in.

"Wednesday?" Enid broke the silence.

"What is it?" Wednesday could feel herself getting tired now that she back in her own bed.

"Do you want to be my girlfriend?" Enid asked, feeling a little nervous despite all that had happened.

"Thought we became girlfriends ten minutes ago when you kissed me. But if you weren't sure then yes I do desire to be your girlfriend." Wednesday responded, her eyes feeling heavy.

"Good." Enid could barely contain her smile.

The room fell quiet again.

"Wednesday?"

"Hmm." Wednesday's eyes were now shut.

"Can I cuddle with my girlfriend?" Enid asked, knowing that Wednesday had already exceeded her lifelong quota of affection tonight so she might have been pushing it with cuddling.

"I suppose. If you hold me tight enough, I might feel like I'm being buried alive." Wednesday smiled at the thought whilst Enid decided to focus on the fact she cuddle with her girlfriend.

Enid shuffled over so that she was right next to Wednesday before throwing an arm across girl's waist, a leg over the girl's own and placing her head on Wednesday's chest.

Wednesday found that the weight was actually rather comforting and leaned in Enid's touch which set fireworks off in Enid's stomach.

The room fell silent once more.

"Wednesday?"

This time Wednesday simply grunted in response.

"What does cara mia mean?"

Wednesday's eyes shot open. Maybe it had been a bit soon for the term after all.
