Chapter 1: Fried
Chapter Text
PART I
• • •
The crickets were chirping loudly in the dried lands. Callie was nervously waiting for her date to answer the door. A small house, in the middle of nowhere. It was quite a long way from Inkopolis, but with her level of fame, it was impossible to have a quiet date any other way.
The door was opened by a tall shrimp, one she recognized.
- Hey baby, what's kraken. Did Marie gave you a lift?
- No, I walked... And I didn't tell her... As you asked.
He smirked slowly. Embracing the young star, he pulled her in.
- Very good... She wouldn't understand.
The young star followed the man as he invited her inside, patting her back softly. Little did she know, this date wouldn't be nearly as tender.
• • •
"Y'all know what time it is!"
"It's Off the Hook, coming at you LIVE from Inkopolis Square!"
"Breaking news! Pop superstar Callie of the Squid Sisters has gone missing!"
• • •
It was a cold morning. I wasn't quite used to every season on the surface. This one, which Pearl called "autumn", was a quite a cold one. Although she knew about my octarian upbringings, I couldn't afford much questioning. I was still terrified of others getting suspicious.
This weather, along with the missing Squid Sister, brought a palpable tension in the air. For some reasons, the city felt... grey. Honestly, I just wanted to be back at her flat and nap it out, but Pearl insisted on grabbing grub on the way and I simply couldn't say no to her
- Hey, what's kraken, ladies? Need a bite before lunch? I have just the thing for you two. I'm trying new recipes, so this one's on me.
The Crust Bucket was Pearl's favorite place to eat Growing rich, she was raised on the fanciest meals. But all she wanted these days was greasy junk from a food trunk. As much as it grossed me out, I could understand. All this stuff would probably clog my arteries but... It made her smile, and I fueled on that
- Aww Sean! You're a real one. So sweet.
- Always a pleasure with a cutie like you.
I didn't like the guy. Was I jealous? Of course not. Maybe. I don't know. It's not like I OWN Pearl. She's a good friend. And her skin is soft and... HEY. Enough of that. I couldn't elaborate much but Crusty Sean? His vibes were terribly off, if not perverse. Something felt terrible about him, and I wasn't just the smell of grease.
Pearl started digging into what seemed to be onion rings.
"Hey have a taste 'Rina! So good"
How cute was she... Speaking with her mouth full. I couldn't resist having a taste of what made her smile so wide, reaching for a bite as well.
But as I bit through the fried snack, I recognized a taste long forgotten.
These were not onions.
Chapter 2: Marina's Flashback
Chapter Text
Some would say I was dragged into the military world a tad too early, and perhaps they were right. As much as I could recall fomd memories of my scholar years, some had been harsher than others.
This teacher was actually a veteran. Colonel Inkfield was a respected yet terrifying character. Above his rugged presentation and stance, he was very open about the violence he witnessed and caused in his time of service in the army. While his course were insightful, I might have been slightly too young for this specific class.
Especially this day, early in the afternoon. He had specifically requested for all of us to arrive on an empty stomach for what was said to be a cooking class. My parents being recently gone, I still had a harsh time keeping up with a steady eating schedule so his wish was more than granted. I was absolutely starved.
Until he dropped a limp body over the table. Most of the class where much older that I was, the morbid curiosity was to be expected. And seeing the whole class approach, I felt the pressure to do the same.
I glanced to the lifeless Inkling body, graclessly laid over the desk. Visibly, this was a recent kill. And a dead body itself wasn't the worst sight itself. More than once, surface dwellers had been waging wars against us. But the poor inkling was not dressed in uniform. Sneakers, hoodie... This was a civilian.
I gagged, eyes tearing from the sight and stench. What was awfully tormenting for me seemed like a joke to our cruel educator.
- War isn't easy. There's no fuckin' cafeteria on the battlefield, Ida. So your going to take this...
He ripped a piece of flesh from the body, soaked in ink, and pushed it between my lips.
- And your going to eat this. Because this probably isn't the last time you will. When you're fighting for your life and people, you get nutriments where you get so stop being a picky baby.
I never wanted to be apart of this war, but here was I, 8 years old with inklings flesh inside my mouth.
Chapter 3: A Lil Queer
Chapter Text
I slapped the food off my partner's hand's. A dash of hot grease splashed her.
- OUCH! What the shell is wrong with you? My sweater!
I knew she didn't care for the top. The sizzling oil was burning her chest. She was pissed. And no one wants Pearl pissed.
- Pearl... I'm...
- Clam it! I don't want to hear your excuses. We're going home, I gotta change.
I standed iddly as she stomped to her car. So many thoughts stormed into my head. She was gonna kick me out. Out of the band. Out of her place. Out of her life. I had to make it up to her.
Her cars horn snapped me back to reality.
- Hey slowpoke. Get in the car. Im not spending the day covered in grease.
• • •
She was still cranky, but definitely calmer. Id be pissed too if someone threw my meal away. I couldn't figure out what to tell her. She deserved to know what she ate... But that would imply admiting knowing what flesh tastes like.
- Pearl, I'm sorry.
- Why do you hate him? He's nice. And he's kinda cute, don't you think?
URGH! Cute? Dude's drenched in grease and whistles at ladies in the streets.
- He's... Not my type.
- Then what's your type? Are you more into tall and lanky like Spyke? Or strong, like Mr. Coco?
- Pearl... Stop.
- OH I KNOW!
She smile excitedly as if the two single braincells of her brain finally came together.
- You're not into men, oh no, no, no.
I gupled. Fuck.
- I can totally see you holding hand with a petite woman with a pink hairdo... Oh ho ho.
- PEARL! I don't...
- I KNEW IT!
Pearl stopped the car, laughing like an idiot. I could feel the ink raising in my cheeks. I covered my face.
- Pearl... I'm...
- Hey, it's alright 'Rina! Everyone's a bit queer for Harmony.
Harmony?? Oh thanks cod.
Chapter 4: Gutted
Notes:
I ordered sushi right after writing this. I'm a vile creature.
Chapter Text
"Marie, I can smell you."
The man's voice as taunting as melodic. The green squid trembled both from fear and cold. Stripped naked, she was hidden in the basement. It was dark, but she knew the floor was still tinted in ink. A very specific shade of fushia.
The light opened.
"What's wrong Marie, I thought you wanted to talk about Callie?"
Her captor threw a bucket in front of her, the contents spilling right on her. It took her a second to realize those were guts.
"I can't do much with fish viceras, you see? I'm going to need your help, Marie. I need to get rid of those. I'll tell you what I know after, promise"
Paralyzed in fear, she stared at the spilled organs.
- Eat up.
- NO!
The predator grabbed the squid by her neck and lifted her off the floor, shoving a piece down her throat.
"I said. EAT."
He dropped his victim and watch her eat the remains off the floor, tears in her eyes. She had already figured what she was eating, trying her best to not regurgitate them instantly. But at the end of the bucket, she made eye contact with her cousin...
...Head. That's who's insides she was eating.
Before she could shriek, he shoved his pincer down her throat, as she squirmed helplessly.
"I understand that you might feel a bit... Gutted."
Chapter 5: Would You Like A Date In These Grieving Times?
Chapter Text
A ray of sunshine slipped from the curtain, slightly lighting the studio. A groan slipped from my throat as I stretched. An other night in the studio yet... I couldn't write a song... Nothing that wasn't about her.
I loved Pearl. I couldn't deny it. She was more than just a pretty girl. She was also soft. Sure, on stage, she was snappy, sassy, almost mean. But I knew the real her. She was not only generous but kind.
Speaking of the devil, here she was, laying on the studio couch, holding her half-spilled soda. I quietly walked toward her and placed the drink on the counter. She was adorable, taking more place than imaginable. I went back to the computer, repressing the urge to press my lips on hers. Her phone rang, breaking the peace from her face. In barely a second, she was up and about. How could she wake up so fast?
- Y'llo?
I couldn't hear the conversation very clearly
- Holy shell... Her too?
Her voice lost it's pep. It wasn't good news.
- Oh god, ok. We're on our way.
She tossed her phone on the couch and stared blankly into the wall.
- Marina.
- Yes...?
- The Squid Sisters are dead.
• • •
It was a dark day in inkopolis. Memorials were installed everywhere, most stores were closed exceptionally, as the vendor were mourning the passing of the idols. Rumor were spitted here and there but the official report was clear. Two severed heads were found. It was a murder.
My stomach churned. Could it be... Could it be related to yesterday's food? After all, one vendor was still on the grind today.
- It's DjHyperfresh! How are you, cutie?
- Clam it. What did you gave us, yesterday? Was is flesh? WAS IT FLESH?
Pearl, shocked, pulled me away. Eyes were around us. I couldn't figure out how I lost my chill so fast. My partner, cupped my face in her hands, trying to ground me
- Girl, what are you on...?
Sean grinned.
- I wouldn't know what flesh tastes like... Do you?
Clear disgust drew itself in Pearl's face.
- Flesh, really? Marie and Callie are dead and you're here starting rumors about this guy? I'll prove to you he's legit.
She turned to Sean and gently grabbed his pincers.
- Come over tonight. I think it's about time I meet the man behind my favorite snacks.
As he kissed her hands, he gave me an arrogant smirk. I could not let this happen.
- Actually, Pearlie, let's go to my place! I have a recipe I'd love for you to try.
Urgh. If I could knock his pinces off her soft little hands. His unwashed, ink-stained pincers...
Hold on.
Green ink.
Chapter 6: In A Pickle
Chapter Text
"You are not a stalker" I thought to myself
"If it wasn't a matter of life and death, you wouldn't be doing this"
This was too easy. Back door was held by a tie wrap. I just had I slip into the crack... In swim form... And I was in. Hiding in a puddle of ink. His music was playing loudly, but as soon as Pearl got in, he lowered the sound.
- Hey sweetheart, what's kraken?
- Don't "sweetheart" just now, Sean.
I shouldn't be listening to this, but... Curiousity, ya know?
- What, your pal don't approve of you dating some fresh shrimp? That's a bold take coming from a little freeloader.
FREELOADER?
- Marina? Ugh. I don't know what's wrong with her. I'm worried 'bout her. She won't open up to me.
- I'm sure she didn't mean no harm, Pearlie. Octolings are just psycho like that.
- What so you mean, octolings are psychos?
Oh he didn't. My stomach churned.
- Listen Sean. Marina is an amazing girl. She's smart, she's though, and she's gorgeous. Yeah, she's a weirdo but... She's my weirdo, see?
- Can't argue with gorgeous, fo sho. But she tasted flesh. Isn't that too weird?
- Yeah, I don't know. I think she just really hated your food.
Was she defending me? I tried to keep my calm. The road was bumpy enough, I couldn't risk being seen.
- Hey Sean, is that your phone?
- This? Nah. Toss it in the back. I doubt my ex will come get it.
- Urgh why is there so much ink in the back.
She tossed the phone, which I approched stealthily. The screen lighed up, showing the phone backgroud.
The squid sisters. Not a promotional photo. Just a selfie of the two of them. It was Callie's phone. With my tentacle, I tried to unlock it. Password?
1... 2... 3... 4...
Gotcha. Some might remember her as the fun one... I'll remember her as the dumb one.
The phone opened on a text conversation.
Marie: r u with this gross guy again
Callie: noooo im at the mako mart
Marie: at 2am? u fucking airhead. then grab me some yogurt if ur there
[One draft, not sent]
Callie: marie i lied im sorry please come get me im at his place im
Must have been when he got her.
The truck stopped abruptly, blasting me off the puddle, right to the front of the car.
- Yo, what the shell. 'Rina is that you?
Oh great. I was on her lap. He grabbed me with his filthy pincers. Her cheeks reddened from embarassement.
- Oh, a not-so-little spy.
- Hey, don't you mock her swim form, she's insecure about it.
- Ugh, she won't let you go on a date in peace and you are STILL defending her?
Pearl sighed, scratching my head like a kitten. I couldn't resist purring gently.
- Not a date. I just said that to piss her off and... I don't know man.
He grunted in response.
- I do want to know you, Sean, but I'm trying to forget... someone else.
- It's all chill Pearlie, we don't have to do anything you don't wanna. But you want that girl ruining dates for you?
- Again, not a date but yeah... I guess you need some help 'Rina.
Before I could turn back to normal, I was shoved into a jar.
A fucking jar. REALLY?
- Sean, no. C'mon. Grow up. Not cool.
- She won't be in the way.
I was really in... a pickle.
Pearl took the jar off his hands.
- Hey, that's mine.
- No! She's mine.
He wrapped his claws around her neck.
- S-Sean, stop.
Her tone had changed, pushing her voice a pitch higher. She seemed, no, was terrified.
- Now, you're going to do exactly as I say.
She shrieked aggressively hoping to crack the windows open.
- Ok first, you can't break those. I had this planned. Second, we're in the middle of nowhere. Knock yourself out. No one is coming.
She gave me an eye contact, shrieking again. The jar cracked. His grip losened up slightly in surprise, allowing pearl into swim form.
But without ink in the seat, we couldn't go far...
Chapter 7: Two Girls, One Jar
Chapter Text
Wow. Just wow. Now we were both in a jar. I could feel my body squeezing against Pearl's... Poor squid. She was clearly doing her best not to complain but... I'm a big octopus. A big, fat and dumb octopus.
- 'Rina?
He couldn't hear us from the jar. Especially not with the sound of frying oil.
- Pearlie... Am I crushing you?
- No, no. Actually... This isn't too bad. You're comfy.
A soft pink hue emerged under her eyes.
- I'm so sorry Pearl... I shouldn't have spied but...
- Hey, no. You were right. Dude's a creep. Do you think we're, like, toasted?
- More like... fried...
The oil was bubbling next to us. The heat was unbearable. I was sweating horribly, so was my partner.
Crusty Sean grabbed the jar.
- No offense, Pearlie baby. But I'm looking for a different strain of tentacle today.
As he grabbed me out of the jar, Pearl firmly held on to my tentacles.
- Pearl, what are you doing?
- I'm not letting you go.
Impatient, he ripped her off me, throwing her violently on the floor, causing a loud thud. The shock brought her back in her true form.
- PEARL!
- I'm... Fine...
She tried to get up, but collapsed on the floor.
- Can't... Move...
Fuck.
I started squirming around, hoping he'd drop me but his grip tightened.
- Now, sweet Marina... You're a big fish, but the recipe calls for your normal form.
I didn't budge.
- Ok, have it your way.
He started lowering me into oil. Drops of sizzling oil burnt the tip of my tentacles. In pain, I pleaded.
- P-please, I'll turn back.
- Good girl.
I obliged. I had no plan. Swim or not, he was too strong. Before I knew it, my arms where tied behind my back. I glanced at Pearl, who as much as she tried, couldn't get off the floor. She stared at me, defeated.
- Alright. Now I'm just gonna have to get this out of the way.
With scissors, he started cutting my clothes off me. The shreds of fabric falling down left my legs exposed. They were covered in goosebumps, but not from chill, obviously. Then, delicately cutting my top into segments, he exposed my chest. Way too gently. Pearl started muttering unintelligibly.
- What, tiny? You want to see more, don't you?
She shook her head the best she could, tearing up. But he didn't listen and started snipping my bra off. Pearl turned her head away, blushing. I was too panicked to be embarrassed as he lifted me and sat me next to the fryer.
- Fried squid is good. It really is. Especially the spoiled rotten ones. Something about a life of luxury brings up the taste. But I've heard great things about the taste of octopuses. That's why I want you.
Before I could even respond, my left leg was shoven into the oil. An high-pitched scream escaped my lips.
The pain... It was excruciating. My eyes teared up rapidly as the burning raised on my legs. I could feel my flesh swelling, blistering... the pain was reaching further into my skin, reaching the muscle layers. I let myself screaming, only for the adrenaline rush to ease the agonizing burn.
- Oh Pearl, you must be starving.
He lifted my leg out of the boiling oil. All i could feel was the ache. But my leg itself? Couldn't move it. Butcher's knife in hand, he chopped the limb off.
I didn't feel much pain from the cut.. If anything, it was almost relieving. The burns ends prevented the blood from spilling. I couldn't even recognize my leg. Covered in blisters, discolored... My brain couldn't process it. He kneeled down, bringing himself to Pearl's level. She turned her head away from him.
- Y-you... fucking... monster....
- Oh don't be like that. You'll change you mind when you have a taste.
- ...I'm not gonna eat that...
She weakly attempted to push him off. But again, he grabbed her by the throat, forcing a chunk of my leg into her mouth.
- It's not like you to refuse a free sample.
The last hues washed from her face, bringing her further into tears.
- Why are you doing this, Sean? Why?
He didn't bother answering, simply force feeding her another bite. I was overwhelmed by nausea. My eyes couldn't stay open. Even with all the strength I could gather, I was passing out. We were doomed.
Chapter 8: Hope In Carnage
Chapter Text
I couldn't open my eyes, but I knew what was happening. His claws forcing my jaw open... A piece of meat entering my mouth.
My own fucking flesh. The only thing I could say tell myself as relief...
...Better me than her.
The texture went from crisp to chewy real fast. After the pain I've been through, the center was still soft. I didn't wanted to taste this. I avoided contact with my tongue as much as I could, pushing the chewed me-meat down my throat. But it just wouldn't pass. It was stuck. My body tried to cough it out but I was choking.
Suddenly, we heard a powerful knock, shaking the van. The movement helped push the chunk out of my throat.
- HEY FOOD MAN, OPEN UP!
- Yeah, we're hungry.
We weren't alone. The sleazy cook grunted before dropping me on the floor, knocking my head on the dirty metal flooring.
- Holy... Fuck...
Pearl's voice was weak, but a spark of hope was there. The back door was being forced open. I pushed myself to reopen my eyes for a second. All I could see was a giant manta ray ramming into the vans before my eyes shut again. I wasn't able to stay awake much longer. I couldn't process what was being said. But I dared to hope, in the carnage, that we were being rescued.
• • •
My eyes opened slowly. My head pounded, especially with the bright like bleaming. Sunlight. I felt a hand grabbing mine tightly. A softness I would recognize anywhere.
- P-Pearlie...?
All the coughing made my throat dry and my voice raspy. As my eyes adjusted to the light, someone helped me sit up.
- Ay? (Are you okay?)
- Big Man, she's missing her coddamn leg. Of course she's not.
The manta ray, who appeared to be "Big Man", wasn't alone. Next to me was another octoling, surprisingly. The one helping me up. Stern eyes, pale skin. Next to her, an inkling. Unlike her octo-partner, the dark skin inkling was a lot more expressive, having clear concern in her eyes. Pearl was already up, sitting next to me. We were...
Safe?
We were out of the van, which the trio had looted. Big Man opened a bottle of water, as the octoling inclined my head so I could drink.
- There you go, Marina. Drink up.
How the hell did they knew my name?
Pearl was gently tracing circles inside my palm, trying to comfort me. She bited her lips, as is she wanted to talk, but couldn't spit it out just yet.
- So... Names's Frye. I'm so glad you're alive. My friend here is Shiver and here's Big Man. We call ourself Deep Cut!
The octoling and manta nodded cheerfully, approving the presentation. Pushing myself to get up, I had forgotten about about my leg... Lack of.
- Hey there. Don't force it. You're in no shape to stand.
- Yeah, take it easy.
Pearl wouldn't say anything yet. I grabbed her hand firmly as I turned to her. Her cheeks were puffy. I could tell she had cried a lot. Her lips finally losened up.
- Marina... I'm... I'm so sorry.
She started sobbing uncontrollably. I pulled her toward me, embracing her in my arms. Frye patted her back, trying to help.
- Pearl, it's not your fault...
- But... it is... Marina... It is...
She was a sobbing mess, trying to catch her breathe between words. The dark skinned inkling pulled her away from me.
- Careful Pearl. Her leg.
She kept rambling unintelligibly as she sobbed. Shiver placed a blanket around my partner and I.
- You two, hush. It's no ones fault. What you two need is a lot of rest.
Big Man picked both Pearl and I from the ground, bringing us back into the van. Crusty Sean was there, body on the floor, head in the fryer.
- ...Still can't believe Big Man had it in him.
Chapter 9: Octo-to-Octo
Chapter Text
I didn't want to be in this van anymore. The events were coming back to me slowly. Our captor's corpse had been thrown out, but my leg was still rotting on the floor. At least, my Pearlie was doozing off, laying atop of me. It hurted, but her weight was also calming. I scratched her back gently, watching her body twitch gently, every while or so. She seemed cold. I unwrapped myself from the blanket so I could wrap her in instead but Shiver stopped me.
- Nope. Don't you think about it.
- But she's cold.
The blue haired bandit sighed, wrapping me back inside the blanket.
- Listen, I know love when I see it but...
- What do you mean?
- Hush now. You love her, can't deny it. You were knocked, still calling out her name for the love of rice.
Embarassed, I glaced at Pearl, still peacefully slumbering.
- It's okay, Marina. What I want to say is... You gotta love yourself too. But Octo-to-Octo talk, it's not easy. I get it. But you gotta show yourself kindness. You've been through rough stuff here.
She moved a tentacle from my face and gently kissed my forehead before getting back up to grab another blanket.
- And also... Keep the blanket because you're... Still naked.
• • •
I could see the city lights from the window. We were finally back in Inkopolis. Pearl woke up abruptly.
- Pearl! You startled me.
- Wait, did I fell asleep on you?
My cheeks tingles from the raising ink. Hers were bright pink already.
- Well... Yeah. You did, Pearlie
- Aw man, sorry about that. Unless...
- Unless...?
She took a deep breathe and blinked sheepishly.
- Unless you... Maybe... Perhaps. Didn't, like, mind it...?
Subconsciously, my tentacles wrapped around her, rubbing her back gently.
- You... Can lay on me anytime Pearlie. I love you.
Those three last words weren't supposed to come out. Her smiled widened and she wrapped her arms around me.
- Love you too, 'Rina. Real hard.
Close call. Shiver gave me a smirk, from behind her fan. That was our stop.
Chapter 10: Detour to Splatville.
Chapter Text
PART II
Deep Cut helped Pearl and I out of the van. I took one last glance at what was left of my leg, before stepping out.
I was going to be a burden. I was one already, leeching on Pearl for shelter and essentials. But now? I really was a freeloader. My partner nudged on my blanket, gently enough not to denude me.
- 'Rina, this ain't Inkopolis.
• • •
- Ay Ay... (Sorry bout it but...)
Pearl cutted him off.
- Tell us where we are. NOW.
Her pitch was loud enough to shatter the closest streetlight, startling Frye. Shiver stepped forward, in defense of her bandmate
- Alright, sit down, princess. Here's this thing. This is Splatville. A-K-A, our turf.
Big man pulled his band mates back, trying to break what could turn into a fight.
- AY! (Calm the fuck down!)
I tried to pull Pearl back as well, but instead fell down, dragging her with me. Frye sighed, rubbing her temples.
- Ok, listen. We're not tricking you. You're in Splatville, sorry about it.
Shiver took a deep breathe, visibly less aggressive.
- Sorry, anger issues here. Frye clowned too much in Inkopolis, she's banned.
- They told me to shut up... Because I told them the truth.
- No, you drank too much and tried to start a fight with the entire bar over what side the toilet paper rolls go. Who even cares?
Frye muttered grumpily to herself as Shiver groaned.
- Anyway. There's a metro that goes to Inkopolis, it wouldn't be a problem but... It's closed. Something broke or whatever. So... Wanna go to our crib?
Chapter 11: Drunk
Chapter Text
I couldn't sleep. The music was too loud, causing a violent pounding in my head. A party was the last place I needed to be right now. I was alone on the mattress, as Pearl somehow managed to find the will to join them. As a guest, I couldn't complain. It was this or the streets for now. Plus, didn't have my phone, lost in the carnage. All I hoped was for the night to pass.
The door opened, creaking heavily. I cringed at the light and music. A waddling Pearl entered the room, not bothering to close the door.
- Pearlie, could you close the door...?
- What door, babygirl?
Her voice was lazy, elongating every word. She was intoxicated, way past her limit. She shamelessly undressed, the door still wide open.
- Pearl, everyone can see you, close the damned door!
- They can watch all they want, but they can't have none of this!
She attempted to strip from her underwear, tripping off them. Her body heavily fell over mine, crushing my bad leg. I bited my lips, trying not to yelp.
- Good catch, M'rina.
- Pearl, please... It hurts.
- But baby! I love you.
I couldn't stand her this drunk she was so different, so sleazy. Yet her golden puppy eyes were impossible to resist. Before I could even do anything, voices were coming closer.
"Yo, is that Off The Hook making out over there?"
Fuck. I pushed Pearl off me and screamed as strangers tried to get in the room.
- GET THE FUCK OUT!
- Urgh, that's not even them, bro. Marina ain't no stumpy fish.
They closed the door behind them, leaving us in the dark. Pearl tried to climb over me again.
- Pearl, please. Not now.
- But I... Urgh... Love you, silly...
As she descended in attempt to kiss, she started regurgitating. I pushed her off again. I couldn't keep myself together. My eyes started watering.
Here was I covered in vomit, with my drunk partner all over me, unable to get up. My tears were blinding me. At least, Pearl had given up on laying on me, resorting to a clumsy attempt at spooning.
For so long, I had dreamt of her soft body against mine, skin to skin. But not like that. Never like that.
The night felt like forever.

Chapter Text
- Marina...?
My eyes were dry from all the crying. The room smelled awful. Pearl was standing over me, sober at last. As I sat up, a groan passed my lips.
- Do... Do you remember what happened yesterday...? I can't recall a thing and I'm scared.
She was awfully different. She started wiping my face with her sleeve, attempting to clean me up. She was clothed again.
- Pearl... I don't think you wanna know.
- I just want to know what happened. My drink was spiked apparently. And now I'm seeing you, covered in vomit, and I'm...
- I need a moment, Pearlie... Can you help you up?
Without hesitation, she lifted me the best she could, then offered her arm as crutch.
- Let's get you cleaned up, alright?
She led me to the bathroom, patiently following my slow pace. Compared to yesterday's sleazy antics, her every move were tender and kind. As she gently washed my face with a damp towel, I finally spilled the events of the night before.
Her bright, golden eyes watered up while the rest of her face showed disgust.
- Marina, I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve this...
She was recluent to even touch me.
- I know it wasn't you... I'm just still...
- I did what I did. Don't sugarcoat it.
She wrapped a towel over my shoulders, still trying not to touch me. Her guilt was undeniable, bringing tension in the small bathroom.
- Pearl, in another context, I wouldn't have minded... I don't mind your touch, I love how touchy-feely you are. I... Really do. Too much. I love you, Pearlie.
- Love? Like, love love?
I bited my lip, trying to gather the strength to answer.
- Marina, I...
- Pearl, it's okay. I know you don't feel the same.
- I... I'm bad with words... No, I be spitting bars. But those kind of words...
I feeling of emptiness consumed my insides. Pearl took a deep breath.
- She's lost on surface, heart with a hole
She's hiding ache deep in her soul...
Was she... Rapping?
- For the sake of all... She kept her flow...
With every day waiting like death row...
She who ached was not alone...
For she met hope, in flesh and bone...
Even without beat and tears in her eyes, she had flow, although she was starting to stutter
- MC Princess now spilling her woes
To the one her loves for only grow...?
She smiled sheepishly, still fighting tears.
- How's that for you, Marina...? I thought it'd fit with the song you started... Wishing it was about me...
Notes:
I can't write rap to save my life so humor me and pretend it was good.
Chapter 13: Hearts Exploding
Chapter Text
The water was warm, embracing my body, easing the pain a bit. Nothing like a bath to take a break from the cruel circumstances I had faced in the last days, right. But as I was waiting for my dear Pearl to come back with a towel, the door opened
- I'm starting to think... I've never seen you clothed.
- Shiver, is that you?
The hostess pulled the shower curtain.
- How ya feeling, Marina?
She wasn't wearing anything either.
- W-why... What are you doing here...?
- Oh I was heading for a shower... But I guess the bath is busy... I'll have to wait. Don't mind me, I'll just sit here.
Without breaking eye contact, she sat on the floor and smiles, nonchalentely. There was an emptiness in her eyes.
- Shiver... Can you... Stop...?
- Oh I could.
Despite of her words, she didn't nudge. She was creeping me out. Squeaky footsteps approched in typical MC Princess fashion.
- Marina I'm... What...?
Shiver's head turned to the short inkling, who dropped the towels.
You'd look up "impulsive" in the dictionary and see a picture of Pearl. Before I could even open my mouth, she was at her throat.
- You dirty son of a fish.
- I ain't do nothin! Frye! Come get her!
The pink inkling was throwing punch in a way I've never seen. Her face was reddened by anger, vein pulsing on her neck. She pulled her rival closer to her face before pushing a deafening shriek from her very core, like a banshee. Ink started leaking from Shiver's nostrils... Ear... Eyes... Orifices. The blue bandit hurried out of the bathroom, leaving a trail of dark blue blood behind her.
- FRYE HELP ME!
- You keep your filthy tentacles off my Marina.
Pearl, still tense, turned to me.
- Now baby, show me where she touched you
- It's okay, Pearl, I'm okay...
- WHERE THE FUCK DID SHE TOUCHED YOU?
Her vocal pulsion shook the entire room, sending me into uncontrollable trembling. A sense of dread settled in my chest. I never knew she could be like that. My soft Pearlie... That wasn't her. A dead silence set in the room as the remains of her echo faded. He face softened, as she realized what she did, giving us a chance to hear what was happening outside the bathroom.
- Shiver, did you take you meds?
- I couldn't find em. I fucked up real bad... It hurts so bad Frye... I feel like my hearts exploded. If I don't die of this, she's gonna come back for me, I swear.
- Calm down, get a towel and lay on the couch. I'll handle them.
We were in trouble.
Chapter 14: Mandatory Group Therapy
Chapter Text
... Or so I thought.
Here we were, the five of us, sitting in circle in Big Man's room.
- Ay! (Mandatory group therapy, everyone!)
Frye groaned.
- Ay? (Anyone cares to start?)
- So, for our guest, here's the rule. You grab the talking stick and explain why you've been acting like carp. Whoever is the least fucked up, usually it's Big Man, gets to moderate.
- Ay Ay! (I'd like to remind you I killed a man)
She groaned again, handing the stick to him.
- Ay... Ay? (Actually that's all I gotta say... I killed a man! Wanna go next, Shiver?)
The blue octoling accepted the stick with a polite nod, avoiding eye contact with everyone. She seemed a lot more grounded.
- First of all... I'm really, really sorry. It can't excuse what I did, but I'm on some meds and... I get those... Weird episodes when I'm off 'em for a while. That's what happened. Marina, you're gorgeous, alright? But I wouldn't lay a finger on you, ever. I'll be steady with my pills and stay outta your way, promise.
- Thank you, Shiver. Marina will get to forgive you or not when she gets the stick. Pearl, you're up next.
Pearl accepted the stick, glancing at everyone in the room. She wasn't good at opening up. And Cod, please... Have mercy... Do not let her rap.
- So... Here's the deal. I hate everything and want to die. That's all, thank you.
- Pearl, elaborate. You haven't exactly been an angel.
- Clam it, you don't have the stick.
- Moderator don't need stick.
Pearl shrugged.
- Ok then. Two of my friends have been brutally murdered, I was assaulted on a date, force fed my girlfriend's leg to finally get drugged at a party. I'm losing it. That's what it is. Happy?
- Fair enough. Did it helped to say that out loud?
Her face changed, dropping the sass. She seemed pensive.
- I guess... Yeah. That helped. Thanks you guys...
- Are you ready to hand the stick to Marina, now?
She smiled at me, handing me the stick. Her smile was pure. I could tell she was calmer. The Pearl I knew.
- Ok so... Same as Pearlie, the murder of the squid sisters affected me. They meant a lot to me. I was there when Pearl was assaulted and... It hurted to see that. Then my leg and stuff, that's all.
Frye shook her head.
- Marina, you're not helping yourself. I have ZERO doubt those things affected you but... Girl, your clearly skipping IMPORTANT stuff here. Try again.
Pearl placed her hand over mine.
- You're hurt, 'Rina. Spill your woes for me.
- No stick, no talk!
- Urgh.
I couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
- Ok. So... I had my leg shoved in boiling oil and chopped off. I'm still not used to my lack of mobility, it's making me feel powerless. I really feel like a burden. Pearl was acting very strange at the party and she threw up on me. I couldn't get up to help her. Nor to wash myself. Shiver's behavior creeped me definitely, to be fair, I thought she was going to rape me.
The octoling lowered her head again.
- But again, Pearl... You really freaked me out. I thought you were gonna kill her and... That scared me a lot. Because I thought, for a moment, maybe you'd kill me too.
Pearl gasped silently, loosening her grip.
- But I really don't want to think that. Because I knew you were being protective. But you terrified me. Really. And I can't defend myself. I can't walk, I'm still in pain, and I'm freezing. I've been naked for two days.
Frye facepalmed loudly.
- So let me get this straight. No one here, in this room, bothered to lend Marina some CODDAMNED CLOTHES? For TWO days? Really?
- Ay. (Yeah that's kinda fucked up. But who am I to talk?)
Chapter 15: Spellbound
Chapter Text
I wasn't sure who it belonged to, but this sweatshirt was just what I needed. The soft fleece kissed my skin gently. Although a bit short, the cut was quite oversized in width. The apartment was still thrashed from the party, but our hosts didn't really seemed to mind. Big Man was preparing food in the kitchen, singing to himself. I felt bad not being able to help with anything, but at the same time, it felt good being able to finally relax for a moment. Pearl sat next to me, placing her hand on my waist, coffee in the other hand.
- How are you feeling, 'Rina?
Her voice was a bit raspier than usual, but comforting. All that shrieking couldn't have be good.
- I'm feeling better, thanks Pearlie.
She took a sip from her warm drink and leaned her head on my shoulder.
- Good, good. Can't wait to be home. You and I have lot of catching up to do.
- Yeah, we kinda skipped a lot of work, haven't we?
Pearl smirked.
- Oh, no. We're definitely taking time off to process all this. What I mean is... You know. There's a few things in the flat that could use an update. Starting with the futon.
- What's wrong with my futon...?
Her hand moved to my back, rubbing gently.
- Well... You see... It's ugly as shell for starters. I don't want you sleeping on that.
- Where do you want me to sleep then?
Her cheek filled with dark ink. She took another sip, clumsy attempt to hide it.
- Well, you know... For practical reasons, mobility issues and stuff... You should probably sleep in my bed.
- And where would you sleep, Pearlie?
She snorted, almost dropping her cup.
- Take a wild guess, smartass.
I loved her playful sass. Everything almost felt normal again. Shiver entered the room, fanning herself.
- Whoo! Its hot in here. Maybe we should open a window.
That sly dog. She knew exactly what she was doing. The autumn breeze entered the room, sending shivers down my spine. "Shivers", URGH. This triggered a protective but loving instinct in Pearl, pulling me closer to her. I wrapped my fingers around her cup, covering hers as well.
- Ay! (Food's ready!)
The big guy placed a warm tray on our lap, filled with food. The man really was a cook. Almost unbelievable with how slim his roomates were. It smelled so good, bringing back an appetite I had totally forgotten about. There was so much food. Even for the two of us, it was a lot.
- Ay, ay! (You both should like this. We've followed your Splatfests!)
That would explain Frye getting kicked out of Inkopolis over toilet paper discourse.
Pearl, who usually lacked table manner, picked a fork and poked a piece of fruit, locking eyes with me. She lifted the fork, bringing the food to my mouth.
- Oh, Pearl I... I can eat on my own.
- Hush now. You're the princess today.
My cheeks burned by the rising ink. Her eyes seemed so serious, but loving at the same time. A smug grin was stamped to her face. I accepted the bite.
- Good Girl.
Oh cod. Oh my fucking cod. My hearts started beating like a drum solo. I was spellbound. She fed me another bite, this time digging into the waffles. I chewed slowly, as she finally took a bite for herself.
- Lean back, babygirl.
I obliged. Gently, she pushed the rim of the glass between my lips and inclined it, scratching my tentacles as I drank. I felt like my body was melting from her simple touch. She made the pulp from the juice bearable.
- Can't have my girlfriend going hungry or thirsty, now.
Girlfriend. She kept calling me that, taking me by surprise every time. The word came naturally from her lips, yet I still couldn't believe it refered to me. But being spoon fed by her with such kindness... I felt loved.
Chapter 16: I Owe You Everything
Chapter Text
Pearl was mindlessly browsing on her phone quietly, head on my lap. "A brilliant strategy to prevent me from getting up and hurting myself", she claimed. But the squid was just too comfortably installed. She closed her phone and dropped it on her chest.
- The metro should re-open tomorrow. We'll be home soon.
It didn't feel as relieving as it should. From her expression, her feeling was mutual. Her eyes locked with mine, forcing a smile.
- How do you feel, Pearlie...? And please don't rap...
- Oh come on! It came from the heart!
Then she dropped the smile.
- But to be real with you 'Rina, I think I'm... scared? I'm not sure. I'm feeling a lot of things and nothing at the same time. I keep reliving what happened in that van... In my head.
Her eyes were glossy, holding back tears.
- He made me eat your flesh, Marina. I still feel the taste in my mouth... The texture...
- Did it taste good, at least?
Pearl chuckled, letting a few tears drip down her pink cheeks.
- Fucking shell, 'Rina! It's your leg we're talking about here! But for real. I really thought it was the end.
- Hey, hey... Pearl, you're safe now...
- But I couldn't... I couldn't save you... You were being mutilated right in front of me. And I couldn't help.
Her tears turned to sobbing.
- I treated you like carp. And you still cared enough to rescue my ass... Now you're hurt and you're traumatised and that's my fault.
- Pearl, no! It's not your fault... I'd do it all over again, because in the end...
I cupped her face with my hands, feeling the tears tickle my fingers.
-Your life is more precious than a leg. You're precious, Pearlie.
- M'rina... I love you...
She lifted her arms, reaching for a hug. She repositionned herself, sitting on my lap instead, holding me tight. She leaned her head into my neck and whispered in my ear.
- I owe you everything.
Chapter 17: Pearl's Flashback
Notes:
This chapter is written in Pearl's point of view. The story will be resumed in Marina's point of view next chapter.
Chapter Text
The crowed moshed to the beat of the rapid blast beats. The guitars wear roaring aggressively, drenched in overdrive. The bass was so loud, the entire venue shaked. The best part was coming. I took a profound breathe, leaning toward my mike. This Is what people were here for.
- MOTHERFUCKER!
The crowed cheered loudly, as I held the note, pushing my voice further. The place trembled by the echo, breaking every bottle in the place. Yet another bar I was now banned from. But it didn't matter. People cheered as the speakers started smoking from the pressure. Suddenly, the entire venue went dark and quiet. Yep, show was over.
My guitarist joined me outside, cigarette in mouth.
- So huh, mind if I keep the cash for my rent? My ma's gon kill me if I don't pay.
- Eh, my dad's loaded. Got any snow for me tho?
He looked around carefully before throwing a few bags at me.
- We're playing at the weird venue past mount Nantai tomorrow. Y'know, the one in a basement? They'll be some more there for us so knock yourself out. Just be there in time.
As soon as he left, I grabbed my father's credit card and started making lines. I couldn't stand not to be awake. I even off stage, I had to give a show. Two lines in, I repacked the rest and headed to the nearest club.
The show must go on.
Chapter 18: All Eyes On Me
Chapter Text
PART III
The metro was packed. I felt like every eyes were on me. But this time, it wasn't about the hair. Some people looked in pity, some in disgust. I hated it. people were loud, some probably laughing at me. Pearl was typing obsessively on her phone, still holding my hand.
- Who are you writing to?
She didn't lifted her eyes off her screen.
- Manager's is pissed at us.
Her typing was agressive. She let go of my hand, now using her two hands.
- Pearlie, we'll figure it out...
She lifted a finger, motioning me to keep quiet. The squid was tense, tapping her foot on the floor repetitively as her eyes were glued to her phone.
- Can I at least have your hand back...?
The train stopped abruptly. Struggling to keep my balance, I tilted forward before falling down. Every one around turned their eyes on me.
- Get a wheelchair, idiot.
Pearl finally closed her phone.
- Clam it, if you don't want to taste the rails.
- Pearlie... Don't.
I just wanted to vanish. I couldn't stand this kind of attention.
- Houzuki? Z'that you?
A huge crab approached us.
- Oh my COD! How are you?
The two embraced each other in a friendly manner.
- I been playing gigs here and there. How 'bout, I've seen you're playing with the big leagues now! Off the Hook, right? I see you caught yourself a bangin' octo. Spicy.
- Oh yeah, Marina! That's my old bandmates, ya know, from my heavy metal days.
I smiled and waved politely.
- Heavy metal or heavy substance abuse, HA! Still on the snow? Or are you off the hook, as your band implies?
Pearl laughed loudly.
- Good one. I've been... Mostly off the stuff actually. You?
- You wish. But good for you, Houzuki.
He firmly patted her shoulder and turned to me.
- Watch out, octo girl, you've caught yourself a real banshee here. Peace out, you two.
• • •
Pearl and I left the station. The encounter left a bad taste in my mouth. Sure, I knew about her metal days. She still had her piercings when we met. But... Heavy substance user? I didn't have the guts to confront her. After all, she was clean now, right?
... Mostly?
Her flat was quite far from the station. We sat on the the sidewalk, waiting for our cab. As the atmosphere got tense, she broke the silence.
- I guess I have some explaining to do, right?
She gently placed her hand over mine, caressing my skin with the top of her fingers.
- Pearl...
- I'm not gonna sugarcoat this, I was addicted. Money was never a problem for me, so Id load up on the stuff when we toured. I always loved being the center of the attention, you know that. But I craved it as much as the stuff. Every social interaction I had before was like a performance, I could go days and night without sleeping, either.
She sighed, and glaced at me with guilt, scratching the back of her head.
- If I wasn't ruining venues, I was in clubs. I needed the attention. Giving myself to whoever wanted a piece of me. I never had any real friends, so I needed this. Then I crashed. I overdosed more than once. At some point, I thought I'd die on some stranger's bed. But back then... It didn't matter, ya know? I even hoped I did die.
A tear fell under her golden eyes.
- But then my dad came to get me at the hospital, forced me back home. I was so pissed at him, spending afternoons shrieking my anger out... But then... Something happened. Something... Good.
She moved her hand off mine and started petting my tentacles. They wrapped around her wrist tenderly.
- The exact moment you stepped into my life. That's what happened. You were so odd and so real. That filled the hole that no coke or hook ups could ever fill.
I pulled her closer to me, not sure what to respond.
- But I fucked up. The other night, I fucked up. Had a few lines. And mixed with alcohol, that went to shit. Frye assumed my drink was spiked... And for a while, I almost hoped she was right. But this was all on me.
My hearts dropped. I couldn't find anything to respond as many emotions brewed inside of me.
- 'Rina...?
Still, I could spit a single word. I stared at the streets blankly, trying no to break into a sobbing mess. That's when our cab arrived.
- Marina... Do you need some time alone?
- I think I do.
That's all I could manage to respond as she sat me into the car. She nodded, closing the door. The vehicle started, leaving her behind, fading into the night.
Chapter 19: Domestic
Chapter Text
... I was nowhere near close to getting used to that damn leg thing. As I was dropped off, I realized the mistake. The seven story-high mistake. Sure, the block had an elevator, but how to reach it was the question. I had to try something.
On all four (Or should I say... Three and half?), I brought myself to the door. The cold hard cement scraped the blisters from my wound at every step. My remaining knee was getting scratched up pretty bad. I pushed the door open, trying to pass fast enough before it closes back. The elevator at the other end of the room. I bit my lip, gathering my strength, and carried on.
I dragged myself across the itchy carpet, trying to remain as quiet as I could. I could feel the dead skin being ripped from me. Talk about exfoliating. I reached and pressed the button. The doors opened before me, allowing me to crawl inside. The button to my floor was out of reach, but the ramp was. Gripping it tightly, I pulled myself of the floor, with the help of my leg and finally pressed the button. As I waited, I hoped with all my hearts that the building wouldn't black out.
Again, the doors opened, allowing me to exit the elevator. Back on the horrible carpet, I made my way to our door. That's were this horrible realisation hitted me: Pearl had the keys. I gave up. Laying on the floor, I closed my eyes and hoped for the best.
• • •
I was awaken by the sound of traffic coming from the window. My eyes slowly opened, greeted by the morning light. I wasn't on the floor anymore. I took a glance at the room, recognizing it. Pearl's room.
She was home, humming loudly in the kitchen.
- ...Pearl...?
The humming stopped.
- Hold on, I'm coming.
The short inkling entered the room and sat on the bed.
- You had me worried, Marina.
- Didn't mean to, sorry. I did what I could, but...
Pearl pressed her finger on my lips.
- Shush, no apologies. T'was my fault.
- Did you actually... Lift me?
- I'll let you guess.
She grinned. Like shell she lifted me. Her 100lbs ass did NOT lift me.
- Did you lifted me or did you drag me around like a corpse?
- I'll tell you over breakfast, now just trust me.
She slid her shoulder under my armpit, placing her hand on my waist.
- Slow and steady...
I placed my foot on the floor. Pearl slowly got up, still holding me firmly.
- Now hold me tightly.
She lifted my leg off the floor, holding me tight. Pearl was actually holding me. The pink squid glanced at me, giving me a toothy grin. My hearts pounded. I just wanted to stay in her arms forever... But her tiny body had it's limits.
As I let her seat me, a plate was already waiting for me. Three eggs, hash brown and slices of kelp. It smelled divine. Pearl was a great cook when she allowed herself to be. I started eating, as she watched me, enamoured.
- Aren't you going to eat, Pearlie...?
- Don't worry, sweet 'Rina. I ate mine already. But there's plenty left if you need more!
- That would be lovely.
Chapter 20: Downfall of the Pygmy Squid
Chapter Text
I've always been a a girl of routine. After all, that's how I was raised. But this was getting overwhelmingly pathetic. I had became highly dependent of Pearl for almost everything, and the pressure was getting to her. I never wanted her to work herself like that. Not for me.
As days went by, the sleep deprivation was making her tense. Meanwhile, the feeling of nothiness was eating me from inside. I was useless. Nothing but a burden. I just wanted to care for her and get back on my feet already.
I was going to make her a cup of tea.
While she was in the shower, I managed to push myself out of bed, using the nightstand. Using my brella as cane, I carefully managed my way out of the room. For the first time in days, a spark of life ignited in my chest.
It wasn't easy to walk around, but I was determined enough. Pearlie deserved a surprise. Making my way to the kitchen, the bathroom door opened.
- Marina, what the FUCK are you up for?
I took a step back, leading me to lose my balance but using the wall, I managed to stay up. Regardless, she was furious. Her pupils, abnormally small, pierced right into mine. My hearts were hoping for her not to scream. Instead, she snorted loudly.
- ... Please Pearlie, just let me help with something...
- Marina, you can't! That's what I'm for!
- That's not true! You need help, too!
The inkling wouldn't hear a word, almost ramming into me just to pick me up. This time, I lost balance for good and found myself on the floor.
- Coddammit, Marina...
As she leaned down to help me up, something fell from her bra. A bag of... Yeah.
- Pearl. Is that..?
Her face changed, turning from anger to panic. A lite trail of ink started dripping from her nostril. That explained so much.
- Marina, I can explain...
Pearl offered me her hand, which I refused, staying in the floor. She snorted again, rubbing her nostril.
- At least let me... Urgh... Help...
The pink inkling fell on her knees, grasping her chest violently. She started started gagging. The miosis in ther eyes intensified, staring blankly into my own eyes.
- Fuck... 'Rina...
She breathed we great labor, crouching. I approched, sliding her phone out of her pocket.
- 'Rina...
I pressed 9-1-1.
- I'm...
Green spew leaked from her mouth. Her breath was awful. Her golden eyes bursted into tears.
- So.... Sorry...
She finally collapsed, stamping herself in her own purging.
"9-1-1, what's your emergency?"
Chapter 21: Her Dying Breath
Chapter Text
Minutes felt like hours and hours like days in the emergency room. The clock's shorter needle already made a full circle. Trapped between cold blank walls as empty as hearts, only my mind kept me busy. No matter how awful she could be... I loved Pearl. I needed her. It somehow felt like that was my fault... My guilt was unshakable. If she was being honest, she never took drugs for the buzz in the first place. With her, everything was a matter of looking strong and fighting for us since day one. I knew Pearl, I could see the pattern.
- Marina Ida, your partner has awaken.
• • •
- 'Rina...? That's you...?
- Hey Pearlie...
She was plugged all over to a cardiometer, tracking her heartbeats. The repetitive sound filled the room. For her sake, I held back my tears and grabbed her hand. She slid her shaky fingers between mine and firmly held on.
- I'll be real, Marina. I don't think I'll make it this time... My skin burns like hellfire, my head is hammered by a throbbing aching... I can hear my hearts beating themselves to death... My body is giving up, 'Rina... I'm so sorry...
As my eyes filled with tears, the doctor placed his hand on my shoulder.
- Please stay with me Marina, I never wanted to hurt you like that. All I wanted was to be here for you... Like you've been for me...
My insides dropped as she spoke. The smell of her dying breath made my inside churn. My entire body was possessed by a feeling of doom. She couldn't die on me. My hearts dropped as her grip losened up. Her eyes were closing.
- Love you... Marina.
She was fading. As I fell into ugly sobbing, the doctor entered the room.
- Miss Houzuki, once again, these are mearly symptoms of withdrawal. You are NOT dying.
Pearl groaned, eyes still shut.
- PEARL!
- You'll have to forgive her antics, Marina. She's still... not quite recovered. But her signals are stable and she's making steady recovery.
Stupid dramatic squid. But a major weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Still sobbing, I climbed my way up the bed and layed myself next to her. She slowly turned her head toward me and grinned softly.
- You and I... We need help... Don't we...?
Chapter Text
One thing was clear: None of us was fit to be a caretaker. Fortunately for the inkling, that could be easily arranged. Not only she was born in a family of millionaires, the rich heiress was more than welcome to return at her dear father's mansion for her recovery. Me, on the other hand... Yeah.
She groaned as she packed her bags, less than eager to go.
- Urgh, that's so humiliating. I'm not a child anymore.
- I know Pearlie, but you need this.
I massaged her shoulder, trying to encourage her.
- How can you be so chill about this? You haven't packed a thing yet.
- Pack to go where?
Without lifting her eyes, she kept shoving plushies into her suitcase.
- At my Dad's, Marina. I swear I told you before.
- I know you're going at your Dad's mansion, Pearl. I just don't know where you think I'm going.
She slowly lifted her head and glared at me with pure confusion in her eyes.
- Yeah, right! Of course, 'Rina. Of fucking course I'm gonna let you stay here to rot. Come on babydoll. You're coming with me.
Before I could say a word, she resumed in a gentler tone.
- Listen, don't take this the wrong way but it doesn't take an engineer to figure that you're from, ya know... down there. I know you don't have anyone to go back to.
- But that's your familiy's home, Pearl.
- Yeah, Marina! Family includes you.
I wrapped my arms around her, squeezing her tightly. I couldn't keep myself from shedding tears. She patted my back tenderly, hugging me back.
- Hey, enough with the waterworks, crybaby.
- B-But I love you P-Pearlie...
She pressed her lips against my forehead.
- Love you too, dollface. Now get ready, my dad sent his limo for us.
Chapter 23: Kraken
Chapter Text
- YO DAD!
- Pearl, sweetie! How have you been?
The squid dropped her suitcase in the entrance, running towards her old man before jumping into his arms. Although their relationships could be bittersweet, Pearl loved her father dearly.
- I'm so glad you are home! Who's that kraken you brought along.
Urgh, kraken?
- DAD! You've met Marina before!
- That's Marina? Long time no see! You've grown!
Wow. Real subtle. I waved and smiled politely, trying to not let his lack of tact get to me. Pearl frowed, liberating herself from his embrace.
- You're so mean, Dad!
- Hey, I would have recognized her if you two came around more often.
Pearl grabbed my hand, trying to comfort me. But he wasn't all wrong. The lack of movement additioned to Pearl's excessive cooking was getting apparent. And sitting in a wheelchair was not going to help.
I pushed myself out of the chair, using my brella for balance. Quickly, the little squid came to assist me.
- Hey, feeling like walking now?
- Yeah, the limo ride was long.
- Alright but I don't want my precious Marina overworking herself. We're here to heal, remember?
I couldn't help but smile a bit. I loved her so much. She grabbed my bag and followed my pace.
• • •
I was still in disbelief at the size of her bed. How could a pygmy squid need a king sized bed?
- Still can't believe you haven't lost yourself in that bed yet.
She chuckled, helping me climb on the massive mattress.
- Hey, that was LOW!
- You know I'm kidding, Pearlie!
I laid my head on her lap, unable to keep my eyes off her. Pearl's smile was contagious, especially showing off her pygmy teeth. Her eyes plunged into mine. A tension built between us. She laid on her back, giving me a sign to come closer.
- Marina, I think it's about time I get another taste.
She pulled my face closer to hers, pressing her lips against mine. Her hand slid to me waist, caressing my entire back in the process. My hearts started pounding loudly.
- Oh, we have a blushy octopus here.
Flustered, I froze. Her sultry voice, the perfect mix between raspy and soft, hypnotized me. Once again, I was under her spell. She kissed me again, gripping my waist tighter. Her slim fingers were digging into my skin, reminding me of her father's comments.
- Pearlie...
Still overdriven by hormones, Pearl grinned.
- Yes, my love?
- Do you think I'm getting... Soft...?
Not understanding the question, the inkling engaged lips again.
- Haven't we always been soft for eachother?
The girl was in a MOOD.
- Y-Yes Pearlie... But I m-mean...
- Tell me, doll.
- Do you think I'm a fat?
...Way to kill a moment.
Chapter 24: Good Girl
Chapter Text
She pulled back and frowned.
- Yo, what is this about?
- I just gotta know.
With a loud sighed, she stared at me.
- Is this about the Kraken thing?
- M-Maybe...?
She groaned, pressing her hand unto her forehead.
- He's a cunt, Marina, don't mind him. You're gorgeous no matter what.
- So... I did get fat.
- Clam it!
She kissed me again, brushing my tentacles with her hands. As if she was trying to kiss some sense back into me.
- You stupid, perfect, octopus. How dare you...
Her hands moved back to my waist, carefully sliding under my shirt.
- How dare you feel such things about yourself in front of your princess.
She lifted my garment upward, exposing my body. Her amorous eyes where all over me. I blushed, as embarassed as enamored. The lustful squid leaned into my neck, pulling kisses. Her body, although small, felt like a shelter over mine. Her chest pressed against mine, sharing her warmth.
- Now Marina, can you tell me... Who is my precious girl?
- ...Me?
- Good girl.
The Kraken story was for now the least of my concerns as her praise echoed in my brain, filling my entire body with loving warmth.
I was her good girl.
• • •
Things evolves into loving cuddles, leading to a well needed nap. Tucked inside her arms, nothing could get me. Her small body was only a facade to the dominant lover she was. Sure, with a bit of confidence, I could turn the tables... But I loved being her protegee. Her good girl.
Her eyes opened lazily, softly blinking. Without a second thought, she pulled the comforter to cover my shoulders, leaving only my head exposed. I wanted to stay here forever with her soothing finger caressing the back of my neck.
With her other hand, she grabbed her phone.
- Hey, 'Rina. Guess who's doing the broadcast.
- Mmh... Hopefully not Sheldon...
She giggled lazily.
- Actually, Deep Cut got the gig for now. I think it's in safe hands.
- They really keep on saving our asses, don't they?
She pressed her lips on top of my head, leaving a tender kiss.
- Yeah... And you keep saving mine.
Chapter 25: It Appears To Be A Leg
Chapter Text
As slumber was reclaiming me, Pearl's butler, a middle aged inkling, knocked at our door.
- Miss Houzuki, your parcel has arrived, should I bring it to you here?
- You'd be real one for that, my dude! Could you unpack it too?
The frigid man nodded and left the room.
- Alright 'Rina... I had this little thing ordered for you. I just hope it'll fit.
She seemed excited, holding me tightly.
- It... It appears to be a leg, young Houzuki.
I looked at Pearl, gasping loudly. She kept quiet, settling for a toothy grin. The man politely placed the prosthetic in front of us.
- P-Pearlie!
- I know how much you wanted to get back on your feet. But you've gotta promise you'll take it easy, okay girl? One step at time.
• • •
The first steps were difficult. Still using my brella as cane, it took a few falls before I managed my way to the other end of the room. My partner watched lovingly from the bed, paying careful attention to my every move.
- Don't rush it. As I said, one at time!
I couldn't help myself from smiling. Even though my stance was awful and clumsy, my chest filled with hope. Things were finally going to be fine. That's the feeling I had.
- Cod I missed that smile. Got scared we lost it for good. Now can you walk back to me? I want to hug my good girl.
My hearts fluttered at her words, tainting my face with raising ink. I waddled my way back to the bed, stumbling on the last step.
- Careful!
I crawled my way back to her side.
- I'm so fucking proud of you, 'Rina.
Loving arms embraced my body, hearts still pumping with excitement. Peace settled in the place as we cuddled through the evening.
Chapter 26: Impending Doom
Chapter Text
M: What's up Inkopolis!
P: WHAT'S GOOOOOD?
M: Pearl this is a video.
P: Don't kill my vibe! Anyway, we just want to give y'all news, cauz many of y'all were concerned about us going off airs.
M: It's a temporary thing, Off the Hook is still running strong, we just came across a few...
P: MARINA LOST HER LEG!
[ CAMERA ZOOMS ON STUMP ]
M: PEARL! Don't show that!
P: Yeah Marina stumbled on her leg and it broke off or whatever. That's what happens when you're too tall.
M: Bold take from someone who gets lost in her own bed.
P: ... Alright that's fair. But basically, we're doing good. We should be back on air within a few days. Full love to Deep Cut, amazing folks right there.
M: Don't get cooked...
P: STAY OFF THE HOOK!
[END OF VIDEO]
• • •
Progressively, walking became less of a challenge. I regained a lot of independence within a few days, being able to move between rooms without assistance. I could tell Pearl was feeling relief. Our video was recieved positively although some people wanted answers about the legs, which I simply ignored for now.
I finally felt in control of myself again, managing to shed a fair bit of weight. After all, I had to be camera-ready for our great comeback. Pearl's dad, usually absent, was strangely present. Although he kept poking jabs at me, I toughened up for his daughter's sake, although she seemed concerned by his behaviour.
• • •
I've been in her studio for a few hours already, trying to figure out some tunes. Pearl finally joined me, coming back from therapy.
- Yo, take it easy 'Rina. You've been here since this morning.
- I've managed to make a few beats, I just need to do some polishing...
The inkling pulled the headphones right off my head.
- Pearlie! It's not ready!
- Chill, dollface. I just wanted to bring you this.
She placed a soda and a bag of cheese puffs next to my laptop.
- Did you even eat today?
- O-Of course, Pearlie. Why?
- I barely seen you today.
I didn't want to lie to her, but better this than burdening her with stress. She wouldn't get it anyway, eating a jar of mayonnaise per day and still be banging for the camera.
- For real, take a break.
I closed my laptop, defeated.
- Alright, what do you want to do?
- How 'bout a little walk outside?
Chapter 27: Be Real With Me, 'Rina
Chapter Text
The garden always seemed so different with every paasing seasons. Fall, among all, was the gloomiest. Sitting under a bare tree, I stared blankly into the greying sky, letting the northen wind bite my skin. Without saying a word, Pearl placed her coat on my shoulders.
- How did you you know?
- Can't hide nothin' from me, dollface
She closes her eyes, plunging her hands into the crisp leaves under us.
- Hey, about my Dad... He never stopped with that fucked up joke, right?
- Pearlie, don't worry about it. We're going back home soon.
- For real, I'm starting to feel like he has a problem with you. But I can't figure what.
I leaned my head against her shoulder, still looking at the pale sky. She finally directed her eyes of gold into mine.
- His word hitted you hard, girl.
- Pearlie, I'm fine!
Without skipping a beat, the inkling pulled up the bottom of my jeans, comparing both legs.
- Yeah, sure. I'm no brain, but I can tell you I had that leg customized for you. Now your real one is slimmer. Don't lie to me.
- Bold take from someone who did coke behind my back.
A loud groan passed her lips as she lowered the fabric back on my legs.
- That's my point. You might have been strong when I almost hitted the grave and fuck, I admire you for that. But if you starve yourself to your deathbed on my watch... I'm not strong enough to go past that, you get my flow?
I couldn't find words for my defense. There was no need for defense. If I could trust someone... It was her.
- Now, be real this time, Marina.
A comforting warmth embraced my face as she cupped it inside her hands, gently circling her thumbs around my cheeks.
- Are you eating enough?
- I'm... Not.
She pushed her body and face closer to mine.
- After the shitfest we been dragged through, we'll knock those bugs outta your mind.
I pressed my lips against her, wrapping my arms around her. With her father glaring sternly by the window, I knew we had to get out sooner than later.
Chapter 28: Gutted, again.
Chapter Text
- Don't get cooked!
- Stay OFF THE HOOK!
• • •
We slapped our hands together in a high five before crossing our fingers together. We were back in business. Before I could push my turntables away and finally sit, a jellyfish hurried into the room, report in hand.
- What's that, boy?
The soft creature shrugged, lacking the inklish fluency required to read. Pearl grabbed the report, eyes widening. As she read, the inkling covered her mouth, trying do dissimulate visible shock.
- 'Rina...
"Dearest broadcasters...
The recent inter-specie mingling presents a great menace to the splatlands. We have a few list of demands.
• Pearl Houzuki must be kept from a safe distance from the Octarian kind.
• Marina Ida, former combat engineer, must exile from the splatlands, or accept that execution awaits her.
We strongly recommend to follow our directive, unlike everyone else who's been graced with this job. A convincing surprise awaits in Houzuki's locker, in case your mind isn't made up.
Thank you for your collaboration in advance"
Our eyes locked. Her pupils were shrunk from distress.
- This... This has to be a joke... Right...?
I pungent smell violated my lungs as we entered the locker room. The room was seemingly clean, except from a puddle of ink leaking from a locker... Pearl's.
- M-Marina...
Her eyes were moistened with tears of fear. Even on her hospital bed, she wasn't so vulnerable.
- Pearlie... Close your eyes. I'll open it.
My hand was trembling as much as her, but I managed a steady grip on the handle pushing is down. Deep inside, I knew what was inside. Going against my heart, I pulled the door open.
A shower of shredded flesh, drenched in ink, cascaded out of the hot pink storage. Pearl opened her eyes, shrieking as the skin straps tumbled over us. But it wasn't all.
Dismembered limbs and guts were piled at the bottom of the locker, topped by severed head, mutilated.
- Pearlie...
- It... It can't be...
Frye. Meaning the shower of gray flesh we were greeted was...
Big Man.
Pearls face lost it's hue. Paralyzed at the realization, her breathing turned shallow and fast paced. A piece of paper was stuffed into our dismembered friend's eye socket caught my attention. Pus leaked as I pulled it it, strengthening the rotten scent.
" The octorian was sent in a locker of her kind... Guess which! "
It didn't require an engineer to figure this poor attempt at a riddle, but here I was. My locker, vandalized and bumped, wasn't leaking. Pearl, against everything, followed by my side. I motionned her to keep a distance as I pulled my locker open.
Chapter 29: Boiling Dualies

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
A nude figure collapsed over me, throwing me to the cold cement. Although cold, the body wasn't stiff.
- Mar...
Shiver limply attempted to lift her frail body off mine, in vain.
- R-run... Y-you...
- Shiver, w-we'll get you out, 'kay?
She was fading. Before I could reach for my phone to call for help, Pearl aggressively nudged my shoulder, still unable to say a word. Loud step emerged from distance as we spiraled into violent trembling.
- I see that you're enjoying my surprise.
- ...D...Dad...?
The stern gentleman entred the room, locking the door behind him.
- My sweet Pearlie... Have you made your choice?
- You can't do this... Why, Dad...? Why...?
- Oh Pearl....
The man kneeled, making himself to his daughter's level.
- You see, as not only my sole hieress but my precious daughter... It is my duty to keep you safe and on the right path. But for a while, a menace has been leeching off us.
- What's that m-mean...?
He sighed, still reeking of arrogance.
- Octarians are not to be trusted, Pearl. We can't have your precious pet leeching off your fortune.
As I attempted my way up, a shot of boiling ink blasted my prosthetic off, sending me back to the floor. Pointing dualies at me, he smirked.
- Those are from Grizz, don't try anything just now. So again, I'll ask. What shall it be?
I dropped my weapon. She had two choices: to give up on her hopes and dreams or to watch me die.
- Mr. Houzuki...
A shot a ink hit me in the chest. I couldn't get myself up this time. The ink boiled through my clothes, burning my chest, sizzling. That was no ink... That was frying oil.
- Silence, octo-scum.
Pearl crawled toward me, shedding tears all over me.
- Look how you're manipulating her, making her cry over an octarian lowlife.
- Dad, stop!
He chuckled, pulling Pearl off my me.
- I'm giving you another choice Pearl. I trust, from what you once said on air, you'll make the right choice. So here's the deal, you can either let me execute the Octarian and remain my proud heir... Or run away with this wretched creature without a penny to your name. Without Daddy's money. So what shall it be, Pearlie? Money, or Love?
Pearl was brash on airs. But to assume this from her? He didn't know her.
- D-Dad... F-Fuck your money... I'm ch-chosing h-h-her...
The man paused, frowning at her sternly.
- Wrong answer, sweetie. I really thought you'd be wiser.
He pointed his weapon back at me.
Pearl breathed deeply and released a scream like she never did before. Over the trembling floor, the lockers' rattling echoed in symphony.
- Oh sweetie. Always such a beautiful voice... I'm glad you offered my those earplugs so I can hear it without my brain exploding.
Her shrieking turned into harmless sobbing. Her father, still aiming, turned back to me.
- I couldn't have you fried alive and I couldn't make you fucking starve yourself to death... It's about time a man takes the matter into his own hands.
It was over. I glanced at Pearl. Her eyes locked into mine for the last time, consumed by terror. I finally closed my eyes as the sound of ink echoed in my head.
Notes:
Only one chapter left!
Chapter Text
I opened my eyes. His body collapsed to the floor, leaving a loud thud. Behind him, a figure stood tall, revigorated and armed. With a smug grin on her face, she lowered her crossbow, dripping with ink.
- ... S-Shiver?
Pearl smiled thru her tears, overwhelmed by emotions. The sole surviver of Deep Cut slid her hand into her chest wrappings, the only garment she had left, popping a pill into her mouth.
- Say, Princess... Your voice is really something else. Sorry 'bout your old man, though.
She stepped on the corpse, approaching me
- Shiver... How? I
- I'm not sure how that happened, but when she shrieked, my hearts, like... Rebooted?
As the octoling kneeled but before she could inspect my wound, Pearl threw herself on her... For a hug.
- Woah there. What's with the waterworks, MC?
- You saved my 'Rina, coddammit!
• • •
We dragged ourselves out of the studio . The three of us sat on the sidewalk, waiting for autories to arrive. I pulled Pearl closer to me.
- Hey... Sorry about the inheritance.
- Are you kidding? I'm still on his will. See how surprised he was when I chose you?
Her cheeks filled a soft hue of pink ink.
- And for the matter... You were right. I would rather live poor and loved... But only 'cause it's with you.
Pulling my face toward hers, she pressed her lips against mine. She pulled back as she remembered the burn on my chest.
- Hey, we should get that checked up... You too, Shiver.
The octoling shrugged, looking as carefree as usual.
- Eh, I'm pretty sure I'm immortal now.
- When are those pills kicking in?
- You'll know they're kickin' when I finally care enough to get me some clothes on.
Paramedics and autorities finally surrounded the place.
• • •
Pearl recieved the enormous inheritance. She sold her father's mansion along with his company. Instead, she decided to keep living in our apartment. I finally allowed her to dispose of the futon... She was right, next her king size bed, it was a shitty place to sleep on.
She had a monument installed for the squid sisters, as the complete story was finally out to the public. She insisted on paying for every aspect of Frye and Big Man's funerals, allowing members of their respective clans to grieve in respect of their culture.
Shiver returned to her clan for a while, to regather herself while keeping contact with us. As she dropped the life of crime, she focused her energy in making music, even playing shows with us.
We kept hosting the Inkopolis News and rapidly, fans caught on we were a thing and our love was greeted with open arms.
Pearl also lost a fair bit of money investing in crypto, but that's another story.
• • •
That was the place we met the very first time. Under the moonlight, her eyes glowed. Not a snowflake in sight, only a gorgeous winter night under the clear sky of Mt. Nantai.
- I know it's cold, Pearlie, but I really wanted to come back here with you.
The winds whistled through the branches, creating a symphony of rustling. As she readjusted my scarf, I wrapped my arms around her.
- I still love this place. It reminds me of the best gift I ever received.
- Better than the socks I knitted you?
Pearl chuckled.
- Most things are better than those coddamned socks or your knitting in general and you know it. But you made them. And you're the gift that changed my life. I don't think there's enough words in inklish to express how much I love you, Marina.
She pulled me closer to her, pressing her lips against mine.
- I know you're wearing my socks, Pearlie.
- Clam it and kiss me.
