One minute you hear noises and laughter coming from upstairs, and then total silence.
It’s your day off. You use the time efficiently to catch up on any housework that has been neglected.
Simon only just got back from another mission a few days before, but he insisted on doing the chores for you instead. You refused. With a push and shovel, you shooed him off to play with the kids.
“Darling, you just got back from weeks of work, go spend time with the kids. I will be alright.”
The children always get excited when their dad comes home. They miss their dad while he is away. Always asking about him.
“When Da home?”
“ I miss Da.”“ I want Da”
You miss their dad too. Hell, you wish one day he can give up the military life and be home more with you and the children, but you know that is not possible. Being in the military gives him a sense of purpose, fighting for something meaningful. , But at least he wasn’t as reckless with his life before he met you. Now his main motivation is to return home safe and sound, in one piece, to you and the children.
Simon tries to be a good dad. You knew his past trauma, you can see the hesitation and fear at the beginning, he doesn’t know how to act around them, not wanting to hurt the kid. Overtime, you see he starts to let his guard down. Now he lets little Johnny use him as a climbing obstacle, and Aileen uses her dad as a decoration piece, putting flowers all over him.
You finish stirring the Scottish stew you were making( always a hit with both Simon and the kids), leaving it on the low heat, and decide to go upstairs and investigate what is going on.
Tiptoeing into the nursery, there you saw three bodies on the floor. Your heart stops for a second, until you hear the light snoring of your children and husband.
The two children are sleeping, one splayed across their father’s chest and another one on the stomach, while Simon has his arms around each of them.
Your heart melts at the sight.
Silently you took a photo of the three with your phone, before getting a blanket and draping over them and retreating out of the room.
“What are you looking at L.T?”
“My reason to go home in one piece.”
