Habit as it comes by is difficult to change. This is especially true for humans and this is especially so for one Isshiki Totomaru.
Growing up, in the absence of his parents, Totomaru becomes very close to his grandmother who raised him. Just like little chicks, he used to follow her anywhere, the park, market, florist and then they spend most of their time together in the shrine.
The visits are repetitive, soon the shrine becomes a safe place; a place of memories from childhood, his grandmother and hope. Visiting the shrine has become a habit. So does carrying five yen coins on a daily basis.
-
"Toto, let me borrow a coin.”
When Ron first directs that statement to him for a case, Totomaru hands him a coin without assuming much and only after the taller of the two finish explaining his deduction does he finally realised why Ron asked to borrow specifically from him.
Soon, as the case is closing up and the suspect arrested does Totomaru finally asked his question.
“ Why did you asked me specifically for the five yen coin?”
Ron looks at him confusingly.
He shrugs out,”I mean I don’t mind but you could’ve asked anyone for it, you confidently asked from me like you knew I have it.”
The other smiles knowingly, his eyes glint in amusement.
“Habit.”
This time, Totomaru is the one who looks confusingly. That one word answer doesn’t actually explains anything.
“The shrine visits.”
Oh! he remembers from that very first meeting the brunette thinks.
Ron laughs in response and teasingly says,” Totooo, you’re speaking your thoughts out loud!”
Totomaru reddens and turns even redder at the words the raven head said next.
“But, yes I do, meeting you change my everything, I’ll always remember our first meeting.”
Still that explains nothing! Despite being embarrassed, he is determined to get to the bottom of it.
“Th-that could be a one-time thing!”
To which the other tuts as he shakes his head.
“No way, you told me that you learned sutras from your grandma, you often smelled like pine when you come pick me up and during those days, your left pants pocket always have a light jingling sounds indicating you’re carrying several coins but specifically some five yen coins.”
Ron gestures to his pants pocket as he held the five yen coin the brunette lends him, before declaring the outcome.
“.. thus it’s your most prominent habit! Now, Toto, let’s go buy some brown sugar, I needed a recharge for today’s case.”
Totomaru could only smiles in defeat as the raven head cheerfully leads the way and he trails along. He thinks that following Ron’s antics have also become a habit to him.
-
Ron lies in the Floor of Sloth, the same five yen coin that Toto lend to him grasped lightly in between his fingers. He holds it up as he recalls today’s case and event.
A five yen coin, a token of good luck, how could he not associate it with one Isshiki Totomaru ? The raven head grins as he thinks maybe carrying a five yen coin would be his habit too from now on.
