Chapter Text
It was sunny today. Nice and warm. Summer had been kind to them. Maybe it was nature’s way of making up for how cruel the winter was. It had been a freezing one, lots of snow, and food had been scarce. But they were tough. They stuck it out, and the whole season was manageable, especially given their living conditions.
However, winter was when the lady of the house died.
The bitties lived in the old shed next to the house the old lady had lived in. She had been kind to them. They stayed away from her (much to one of them’s protests) but she always left food and water out for them, which they happily took. When the nice old lady died, it was hard on all of them. Not just emotionally, physically . Without the help of the food and water she left out, living conditions became harder. They began to suspect something when there was no food or water left out for them for a few days.
Then ambulances came. And they saw the gurney leave the house. They knew what happened by then, and all of them had been silent for the rest of the day.
Winter had been hard.
Since then, the house had been abandoned. There was a for sale sign up front, but so far no one had shown any interest. Through the months, they had been able to ration the last bit of food the old lady left. The seeds in the bird feeder.
It had been up to the most violent one of them to keep the birds away. The other two couldn’t bring themselves to do it. The violent one had called them pussies, to which the patient one had replied that they weren’t pussies, just sensible. According to him, no one deserved to go hungry. Not humans. Not monsters. Not animals.
But it was the birds or them.
When they didn’t eat the seeds, they munched on berries, fish, or anything else they could find. One time the violent one actually went and hunted.
Now their supply of bird seed was getting low. But thankfully the warm season had brought plenty of food, so rationing it was easier. However, they missed the easy days of when the nice old lady would leave things out for them. She would call out to them and tell them that it was time to eat. And she never disturbed them.
They missed her.
Now, they were doing their best to survive.
….
“Mweh! I’m hungry!”
“The more you complain the more I’m gonna sit here and ignore you, asshole.”
“Language!”
The baby blue bitty and the edgy bitty had been sitting in the shed on the soft grass arguing all morning. It was typical, but nothing either of them weren’t used to. Their friend was out on a walk.
“ I say we go find food now , while it’s midday. It’s so warm out! Come on, Red, don’tcha wanna stretch your legs and walk?” The baby blue bitty got up and smiled.
“No, I wanna sit here and relax.” Red replied.
“Mweh! That’s all you and Sans do! You’re both so lazy!”
“Keep complainin, Blueberry. It gets ya nowhere.”
They all had names, of course. Red and Sans had given themselves names. However, Blueberry had previously been owned by humans, and they gave him his name. He also liked the nickname his friends had given him: Blue.
Blue sat down and sighed. “I’m bored. We should play a game. Ooo, we should--”
“Say puzzle and I swear I’ll kill ya.”
Blue looked away and let out an annoyed and disappointed “mweh.”
Suddenly noise sounded from the small crack in the shed, which they used as their entrance. They turned to it, hoping it wasn’t some sort of animal, but they were happy when they saw it was their friend returning.
“Sup?” The Sansy bitty smiled. “Everything ok while I was gone?”
“No,” Red grumbled. “He won’t stop complaining.”
“Well I can’t help it if I’m bored!” Blue pouted.
Sans sighed. “Ok, I’ll play a game with ya. What did ya have in mind?”
Blueberry got to his feet excitedly. He bounced up and down, looking at his friend gratefully. “A race!”
“Nevermind, I take back my offer.”
“Sansy Bitty!” The baby blue cried, putting his hands on his hips and pouting. “You said you’d play a game!”
“A game , not a race.”
“Lazy, lazy! The run will be good for you!”
Sans grinned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You know what it means,” Blue huffed. Then he shot a glance to Red. “You could use a run too, for that matter.”
“WHY YOU LITTLE--!” Red leaped to his feet and began to chase Blue around the shed. They started running around Sans, who just sighed, enjoying the show. All the while Blueberry was laughing, enjoying the run he was getting.
“I’LL KILL YA!”
“Mweh heh heh! Gotta catch me first!”
Finally Sans had had enough. Amazingly, he grabbed Blueberry by the shirt and Red by the coat, stopping them in their tracks. “Alright, enough. Red, get over it. He’s just teasing you.”
“I’m trying to help him.” Blue pouted. “ And you for that matter.”
“And I appreciate it,” Sans nodded. “Red, I’m gonna let you go now. Ok?”
“Whatever,” The edgy bitty grumbled. Sans let both of them go, and Red stomped over to his little makeshift grass bed and lied down, grumbling. “Stupid fucker. Making me run.”
“Mweh!” Blue huffed in offense.
Sans sighed. He was used to this, but it never got any easier. It was like controlling two dogs. To ease the tension, he turned to Blue and gave in. “Alright, I’ll race ya.”
Blue turned to him, beaming. “Really?!”
“Yes, really.”
“Mweh heh heh!” Blueberry laughed. “Thanks, Sans! Come on, let’s go!” He raced outside, not wanting to waste a second. Sans followed him, but stopped and turned to his edgy friend.
“You know, you could try being a little nicer to him.”
All he got was snoring in response.
“I know you’re not asleep. I’ve used that same tactic before too.”
Edgy turned to him, impressed. “ Boy , nothing gets by you, does it?”
“Let’s just say I’m sans ationally observant.”
Then the two cracked up into laughter.
….
Blueberry gazed up at the bright blue sky. It was an amazing day today! The sun was out, barely any clouds, and it was warm! It was a perfect day!
He turned to the crack in the shed. “Sansy Bitty! Hurry up!”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m here.” He stepped out into the sunlight, coming to stand next to his cheerful friend. “I’m ready.”
“Ok! We start here. Whoever gets to the house first wins! And no shortcutting this time!”
“Ok.”
“I mean it!”
“Ok.”
Blue sighed. Then he got into a beginning position. “On your mark....get set....GOoooo what is that?”
Sans looked up to where his friend was looking. His eye sockets widened. There was something at the bird feeder. It was around their size. It was clinging to it, and from the look of it, it was eating their birdseed.
EATING THEIR BIRDSEED!
“MWEHHHHH!” Blue cried out. “This is terrible! That animal—whatever it is, it’s eating our food!”
“What the hell’s goin on out here?” Red sounded from behind them. He came up to stand next to Sans, and followed his friend’s gaze to the birdfeeder. His eye sockets widened when he saw what they were looking at. “Holy--HEY!” He shouted. “HEY YOU! GET AWAY FROM THERE! THAT’S OURS!”
The thing stopped moving. Its gaze turned towards them slowly, menacingly , causing them all to flinch. All they could make out was one red eyelight.
“Is that....is that a bitty ?” Blue said incredulously.
No one answered. Then, as if to egg them on, the creature—they assumed a bitty at this point—continued to eat their birdseed.
“I SAID STOP IT!” Red howled. The strange bitty wasn’t stopping. Red grumbled angrily. “Alright, that’s it.” And in a flash, he was gone. He shortcutted to the birdfeeder, but when he got there--
The bitty was gone.
“ What the fuck?”
Red’s eye sockets were wide.
“Hey, uh, buddy,” Sans called from down below. “Come back down here.”
Red did so, reappearing next to Sans. “What the fuck? Where the fuck did he go?!” He growled angrily. “Right when I got there he was gone! What the--” He stopped short, and his eye sockets widened.
Sans gave him a knowing look. “Guess you’re thinking what I’m thinking. Hell , I saw it.”
“So did I.” Blue nodded.
Red stood up straight, his eye sockets still wide. “He shortcutted.”
