Thank you

Summary:

“I wanted to say thank you,” Satoru says, taking Suguru’s hand in his. “And that I’m sorry, I guess.”

Suguru blinks at Satoru.

“You’re gonna have to explain that,” Suguru finally says and Satoru scoots around on the couch until he’s able to look Suguru directly in the face.

“Thank you, because you love me so well,” Satoru earnestly says. “And sorry because I’m not very good at doing the same.”

Work Text:

Suguru heaves out a sigh the moment Satoru comes into view. It’s the middle of December and bitterly cold, but Satoru is not dressed at all for the weather. Luckily, Suguru knows his boyfriend well enough by now to come prepared.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” Satoru pants out as he comes to a stop in front of Suguru. “The professor just wouldn’t stop monologuing.”

“You’re an idiot,” Suguru chides him and takes the second scarf he packed this morning out of his bag. “You’re going to freeze to death, come here.”

Satoru’s cheeks are rosy from the cold and Suguru sees that the tips of his fingers are red as well. Of course Satoru didn’t pack gloves, either. He slings the scarf around Satoru’s neck and uses it to pull Satoru close for a kiss as well.

“Hi,” he breathes against Satoru’s lips and feels when Satoru’s smiles at him.

“Hi. Best boyfriend ever, I love you.”

“And don’t you forget it,” Suguru gives back, giving Satoru another peck. “I love you, too. Now gimme your hands, they must be freezing as well.”

“They are so cold,” Satoru whines out, holding out his hands for Suguru to take and Suguru narrows his eyes at him.

“Did you forget your gloves at home on purpose?” he asks, even as he takes Satoru’s hands in his, rubbing some warmth back into them.

“I would never,” Satoru is quick to say, which means that he very much did do it on purpose.

“You need to take better care of yourself, my love,” Suguru mumbles. “What if you get sick?”

“Then I’d have you to care for me,” Satoru gives back as if he isn’t the whiniest baby when he gets even a little sniffle and Suguru snorts.

“I’d really rather not see you sick at all, though,” he replies and Satoru pouts at him.

“How am I going to get you to hold my hand, then?” he asks, as if he needs a reason for that and Suguru threads their fingers together.

“You ask,” he gives back. “Or you just take my hand, how about that?”

“Sounds good,” Satoru nods and squeezes his hand. “Now, let’s get some lunch.”

Sometimes Satoru reminds Suguru of an over-excited puppy; all he’s missing is the wagging tail as he drags Suguru off to their usual place but Suguru follows him more than willingly.

Spending time with Satoru is, after all, his favourite thing to do.

~*~*~

Suguru is frowning at his textbook when Satoru comes home.

“I’m back!” Satoru yells out and Suguru presses his lips together in annoyance.

He doesn’t understand the assignment, doesn’t even know where to start with this and having Satoru home right now is not going to help the matter, because he will make sure Suguru cannot concentrate on this.

And it’s enough to make Suguru almost snap at him when Satoru comes over and drops a kiss to his head.

“What are you doing?” Satoru asks, peering down at the book, but Suguru slams it shut.

“Nothing,” he presses out, annoyed with himself that he can’t understand the assignment and annoyed with himself for being annoyed with Satoru. “It’s nothing.”

“Mhm, sure,” Satoru gives back and spills himself into Suguru’s lap. “If it’s nothing, you can pay attention to me then,” he says like the spoiled brat he is and with how he’s sitting it’s not as if Suguru is going to get anything else done anyway.

“You’re so annoying,” Suguru tells him, though there is nothing but fondness in his voice and Satoru beams up at him.

“And you love me like that,” he confidentially gives back, because he knows that Suguru loves him.

Suguru must have done something right if Satoru can be that sure about it.

“I do,” Suguru gives back and leans in for a kiss. “I made lunch. There’s leftovers for you in the kitchen.”

“You’re the best,” Satoru happily sighs out and gets up, though of course he doesn’t simply leave Suguru behind. “Come sit with me,” he says as he tugs on Suguru’s hand.

Suguru sighs heavily, but with one last look at his textbook he follows Satoru to the kitchen. He’ll just keep Satoru company until he’s done eating and then he’ll get back to it. Surely it will be fine.

Satoru happily chats away as he eats and no amount of scolding from Suguru is going to stop him from behaving like a caveman, talking with his mouth full.

“You’re such a child,” Suguru chuckles when Satoru almost chokes on a bite because he was too busy talking and didn’t chew enough.

Satoru’s very mature answer is to stick his tongue out at him and it’s so disgusting that Suguru erupts into laughter.

“You’re the worst, I’m never going to cook for you ever again,” Suguru threatens, though they both know it’s a bold-faced lie.

Suguru would rather die than not take care of Satoru.

“Yeah, right, that I want to see,” Satoru replies, damn well knowing that Suguru is all talk when it comes to things like that and Suguru is forever thankful that he swallows first before he leans over the table to demand a kiss.

“I thoroughly spoiled you rotten,” Suguru mutters when they part, because of course he’s not going to pass up a kiss and Satoru gives him a blinding smile.

“I love you, too,” is what he says before he digs back into his food.

It warms something in Suguru to see Satoru enjoy what he cooked so much and he puts his chin into his hand as he watches Satoru devour lunch.

“You’re such a creep for watching me eat like that,” Satoru says once he’s done and Suguru snorts out a laugh.

“Who demanded I keep him company, even though I wouldn’t be eating? You made your own bed, now lay in it.”

“I didn’t say I minded,” Satoru tells him with a wink and then leans back with a satisfied sigh. “That was so good. You truly make the best food.”

“It was just a simple lunch,” Suguru gives back, always a little bit uncomfortable when Satoru praises him like that but Satoru is quick to shake his head.

“Best simple lunch,” he gives back, clearly just daring Suguru to argue with him, but Suguru is not going to take the bait.

“If you say so,” he replies, making Satoru pout at him.

“You don’t believe me.”

“No, no, I do.” His voice makes it clear that he doesn’t.

“You’re stupid, then,” Satoru sniffs out, “and stupid boyfriends don’t deserve kisses.”

That makes Suguru laugh again. “That’s more of a punishment to you than it is to me,” he teasingly gives back because he knows how much Satoru loves being kissed. And it’s certainly not Suguru who always drops a kiss whenever he passes Satoru.

“Some sacrifices must be made in order to make you learn,” Satoru decides, though he seems thoroughly unhappy about it.

“Fine, I’ll agree and even mean it,” Suguru says, because he does not like to see Satoru unhappy–pretend or otherwise–and Satoru immediately leans over for another kiss.

“Got you,” Satoru happily says and then gets up. “Alright, time for a post-meal nap. You gonna join me?”

Suguru looks over to his textbook.

“Nah, I still got work to do,” he replies, and thinks that the break might have done him some good.

“If you finish before I wake up, you can always join me,” Satoru calls over his shoulder, already walking off to their bedroom and that is definitely some motivation right there.

Suguru is done with his assignment in no time.

~*~*~

Suguru very carefully doesn’t slam the door shut when he comes home. It’s not as if the door did anything to him and honestly, Suguru is more angry over the fact that he is angry in the first place than the fact that he was insulted in the coffee shop.

He should be above something as petty as that, and yet he can’t deny that it’s getting under his skin. Suguru is just glad that Satoru wasn’t there, because he would have lost it, Suguru just knows it.

“Do I smell coffee?” Satoru calls out, skipping up to Suguru to take the offered cup out of his hand and he lets out a satisfied little sigh after the first sip. “Ah, this is the good stuff,” Satoru says with a nod and then leans in to kiss the corner of Suguru’s mouth.

Suguru can make out just a hint of sugar and it’s enough to soothe him at least a little bit.

“I’m glad to see you, too,” Suguru says, feeling slightly jealous of a stupid cup of coffee and Satoru laughs, bright and happy before he leans in, hanging himself off Suguru’s shoulder, careful not to spill his drink.

“I’m always happy to see you, you know that. You’re my favourite part, always,” he easily gives back and then kisses Suguru’s neck, right where the top of his tattoo peaks out of his shirt.

“I know,” Suguru sighs out, Satoru warm and soft against him, but he still can’t get the stupid, hateful comment of that one lady out of his mind.

“But you don’t believe it,” Satoru says, narrowing his eyes at Suguru. “Something is wrong. What is it? Did something happen?”

“No, nothing happened,” Suguru denies, but now that Satoru smelled blood he’s not going to let go of this until he figures out what’s wrong with Suguru.

“You’re lying to me,” Satoru says and he sounds so dejected that Suguru’s heart constricts in his chest. “Won’t you tell me what’s going on?”

He makes puppy eyes at Suguru, and Suguru curses the fact that Satoru damn well knows that he can’t resist that.

“It’s stupid,” he tries to wave him off, but Satoru presses even closer, blinking his eyes more exaggeratedly at Suguru and it drags an unwilling laugh out of him. “You’re so ridiculous. Drink your damn coffee, before it goes cold,” Suguru says and lightly flicks his forehead. “You hate cold coffee.”

“I do, but I hate seeing you unhappy more,” Satoru replies without hesitation and Suguru deflates.

“It’s stupid, like I said. A woman in the coffee shop made a stupid comment about me, right where I could hear.”

“A regular? One of the staff? We’re never going back there if that’s the case!”

Suguru freezes at that.

“Satoru, that’s your favourite coffee shop. What do you mean we’re never going back there?”

“Well, if they are being mean to you then they can hardly be my favourite, now, can they?” Satoru asks as if it’s the most natural thing in the world and Suguru leans more heavily against him, almost making Satoru stumble and spill his drink.

“It was just a random customer. You can keep your favourite,” Suguru tells him. “She said–”

He doesn’t get much further than that, because Satoru slaps a hand over his mouth.

“No. No repeating whatever it is she said, I don’t care for it. She’s wrong anyway. You’re perfect.” Satoru accentuates his words with a kiss to Suguru’s cheek and then bodily shoves him towards the living room. “Cuddle session, right now,” he then decides and Suguru doesn’t get a chance to protest before Satoru almost body checks him onto the couch.

“You are so demanding,” Suguru complains, though he’s really not very serious about it at all.

“And you are so soft on me,” Satoru shoots back, as he spreads himself out on top of Suguru, his head tucked right under his chin.

“You forgot your coffee,” is all Suguru says to that because there is nothing really he can say to Satoru’s accusation.

He really is so very soft on Satoru.

“I set a different priority,” Satoru mutters, nuzzling his head against Suguru’s chest. “Will you hug me now, you unromantic lump?”

“Wow, I’m really feeling the love,” Suguru chuckles out even as he dutifully brings his arms up around Satoru to hug him close.

“Like you should,” is Satoru’s reply to that, taking it completely serious and that’s the last they speak for a while.

It almost feels as if Satoru’s heartbeat is echoing through Suguru’s body and the comforting steadiness of it lulls Suguru to sleep not long after.

When he wakes up, all hurtful words uttered by unimportant strangers are forgotten.

~*~*~

“I got you your favourite,” Suguru says as he dumps a back of candy into Satoru’s lap, who’s lazing around on the couch.

“You are my favourite,” Satoru shoots back, even before he sees the candy and Suguru goes warm at the way Satoru lights up. “Oh, but those are a close second.”

“Thankfully, I’m still safe then,” Suguru mutters as if there is anything that could kick him from that very first spot, but Satoru goes serious at hearing it.

“Suguru, come here for a moment, sit, sit,” he urges him, patting the space next to him on the couch.

“Am I in trouble?” Suguru asks, even as he does what Satoru wants from him.

“Never,” Satoru immediately says, before he tilts his head in consideration. “Well if you were about to eat that entire bag of candy before I could take one, then maybe,” he amends, and it’s so not serious that Suguru doesn’t even feel worried.

“What is it then? Seeing as I gifted you the candy instead of eating all of them myself, so clearly I’m not in trouble.”

“Huh?” That doesn’t make any sense at all because Satoru is so good at loving Suguru.

“You just always take care of me, and you know when I forget stuff, you can always predict that. Like that one time with the scarf? You brought an extra one for me because you just knew that I didn’t have one. And then this–” he lifts up the bag of candy. “You always get me stuff, you always think of me when you go out, so thank you for that. And I’m so sorry that I’m not doing the same.”

“Satoru, that’s not–you show your love in other ways and I know that,” Suguru gives back because there has never been a moment for Suguru where he didn’t know that Satoru loves him.

“Like what? I never even do anything. You spoil me rotten and then I am a brat, demanding even more and you give me that as well. I never do anything.”

“That is so not true,” Suguru replies and reaches out for Satoru’s hand, threading their fingers together. “You might not be aware of it, but you take care of me so effortlessly. You somehow always know when I get a little bit lost in my own head, when something bothers or upsets me and you are so good at distracting me.”

“Yeah, well, annoying you until you forget your original troubles can hardly be called something positive. I don’t know how to take care of someone,” Satoru huffs out and he honestly seems bothered by it.

“Then I’d say that you were made to take care of me because that certainly seems to be an innate talent you have. Remember that time you made me sit with you during lunch, even though I had work to do?”

“I’m sorry I distracted you then.”

“No, don’t be, that was what I needed. I desperately needed a break and wasn’t even aware of it, but you made me take one. I was done in no time afterwards. And last week with that rude coffee shop customer, too. You always, always know how to get me out of my own head, how to set me straight again and you’re doing it so well. Really, I need to say thank you as well, so. Thank you, Satoru. For loving me like you do.”

Suguru is not surprised when he spots tears in Satoru’s eyes. He has always been an incredibly easy crier when he feels comfortable with someone.

“This was supposed to be about me thanking you,” he sniffs out. “I wanted to thank you. You can’t just steal my thunder.”

“I’m not, I’m reciprocating it. And I did hear it when you said thank you, so how about this.” He leans forward and kisses the corner of Satoru’s eye. “You’re very welcome.”

He leans back again, looking expectantly at Satoru who gives him a watery smile.

“You’re welcome, too, I guess,” he says, clearly knowing what Suguru wants from him.

“There you go,” Suguru whispers out. “I love you.”

“I love you,” Satoru replies immediately and when he throws himself into Suguru’s arm, bag of candy forgotten between them, Suguru is ready for him.

“We got really lucky, huh?” Satoru asks, his breath tickling the side of Suguru’s breath and Suguru pulls him closer.

“We really, really did,” he agrees, because sometimes it’s hard for him to comprehend just how lucky they got.

And Suguru is going to protect the happiness he has with Satoru as hard as he can and he knows that Satoru will do the same, should there ever be need for it. But for now, they will continue to love the other as best as they can.
