As Long As You're Mine, We'll Defy Gravity

Summary:

As they run away from the Wizard, Glinda and Elphaba manage to dodge the guards more than they do on the musical. With one evenning left to themselves, feelings finally come to surface.

Notes:

There are many ideas and takes of how this could go for me, but this was the first one I decided to try and put to...paper, sort of.
Anyways, takes place right as they are running from the Wizard. First time trying to write these beautiful women, despite being obsessed with them for a ridiculously long time.
Hope you all enjoy it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

[ELPHABA]

[spoken]

Glinda, come with me. Think of what we could do, together!

[sung]

Unlimited

Together, we're unlimited

Together we'll be the greatest team there's ever been

Glinda, dreams the way we planned 'em

[GLINDA]

If we work in tandem

[GLINDA & ELPHABA]

There's no fight we cannot win

Just you and I, defying gravity

With you and I defying gravity

[ELPHABA]

They'll never bring us down!

[spoken]

Well, are you coming?

There were tears in Glinda’s eyes as she paced around the small room they had managed to lock themselves in.

There were no more sounds of soldiers around them. The coast was clear and so was the night. They could do it. Hop on the broom Elphaba had enchanted and leave. Together.

Unlimited.

A tear ran down her cheek.

And then what?

They’d be hunted for eternity.

What of the munchkins? What of the animals there were still free? What of the people of Oz?

There was another way. There had to be another way.

Glind stopped pacing and turned back to Elphaba.

Her Elphie.

Her enemy, turned roommate, turned friend, turned best friend… turned more than that. Her everything - or almost. Her could-have-been everything.

She swallowed the lump in her throat and saw as her friend’s shoulders slumped.

She knew. They both did.

There was far too much uncertainty on that path. There were no guarantees to Elphaba’s plan. That it’d work. Glinda recognised that she had not a plan herself, but she was certain she could do something different, something from Emerald City.

With a heavier heart than she ever felt, she dared to open her mouth.

“Elphie, I… I can’t.”

“Gli-”

“No, don’t… Please don’t ask me to go again. I don’t know how to-” She stopped, blinking hard to no avail. The tears were falling freely now.

Elphaba took one step closer and she backed up one.

“Glinda.”

“I can’t, Elphie, I.” She looked anywhere, but her friend, and when couldn’t find a place to direct her gaze, she closed her eyes. “I believe we are on the same page, finally, about what we want.”

“But?”

The broken tone of a person that was usually so sure of herself, nearly broke Glinda’s already crumbling resolve.

“But not how to go about it.”

“The power here is corrupted, Glinda!”

“But it is power, Elphie. It can be used. Turned.”

She opened her eyes to see the other woman shaking her head slowly, face in the same state of disarray she was sure hers was.

Of heartbreak.

“Not if there is no attack from the outside.”

Glinda gave her a small, weak smile.

“Seems like we'll both each have our own parts to play then, Elphie.”

The taller woman looked away, her hands wiping the tears running down her cheek, but to no avail. New ones were falling.

Glinda didn’t bother with hers.

[GLINDA, sung]

I hope you're happy

Now that you're choosing this

[ELPHABA]

[spoken]

You, too

“So this is it?” Elphaba asked, one step closer.

Glinda bit back a sob as it was her turn to look away.

She felt a hand on her chin, pulling her eyes back to brown ones.

They were clear. Pain was there, yes. But the resolution, the certainty also.

The fire that first drew Glinda in.

What she had believed to be loathing, how foolish she was. Such similar conditions. Such vastly different emotions. For it was not loathing. Not at all. It never was.

“Yes.” It was the mere echo of the word that came out of her lips.

Love was radiating through her. How ironic that it’d be right at this moment.

Elphaba nodded slowly, as she moved the hand on her chin up, cupping her cheek. Glinda immediately leaned into that sensation, recognizing at last the other emotion in her eyes.

Passion.

Longing.

Love.

Her eyes dipped low for a second, to lips slightly open. As her gaze snapped back, she noticed the same movement from the other woman.

“If this is it. If this is our last moment...” Elphie started, thumb caressing the trail of tears away.

They had stopped and Glinda had not realised. Just as she had not noticed her arms moving and placing her hands on either side of Elphaba’s waist.

Or how they were close. So very close. Noses almost touching.

Elphaba didn’t complete her thought.

“If this is our last moment? Elphie?”

“I’d like something to remember…I…”

Her second hand rose up to be placed on her other cheek.

[ELPHABA]

Kiss me too fiercely

Hold me too tight

I need help believing

You're with me tonight

My wildest dreamings

Could not foresee

Lying beside you

With you wanting me

And just for this moment

As long as you're mine

I've lost all resistance

And crossed some border line

And if it turns out

It's over too fast

I'll make every last moment last

As long as you're mine

[Glinda]

Maybe I'm brainless

Maybe I'm wise

But you've got me seeing

Through different eyes

Somehow I've fallen

Under your spell

And somehow I'm feeling

It's up that I fell

[BOTH]

Every moment

As long as you're mine

I'll wake up my body

And make up for lost time

[Glinda]

Say there's no future

For us as a pair

[BOTH]

And though I may know

I don't care

Just for this moment

As long as you're mine

Come be how you want to

And see how bright we shine

Borrow the moonlight

Until it is through

And know I'll be here

Holding you

As long as you're mine

[Glinda]

What is it?

[ELPHABA]

It's just...

For the first time...

I feel... Wicked!

Xxxx

Light fingers caressed her cheek and rose her from her slumber. From the best rest she’d ever had.

Loving brown eyes met hers and disappeared once more as she closed her own, receiving a gentle kiss.

Foreheads touched as they separated, taking one moment to breathe in the same air. To make the feeling linger.

Glinda raised a hand to Elphaba, feeling a dress under her hand.

She bit her lip to stop it from quivering. Elphie’s thumb released it.

“We don’t have long now, I’m afraid. I hear guards nearing us.”

“Elphie…”

With gentle caresses and sweet kisses, Elphaba helped Glinda dress again.

The sounds of shouts were coming closer as Glinda finished attaching Elphaba’s cloak.

No words we exchanged until boots started to be heard marching down the street. Closer and closer.

Out of the corner of her eyes, Glinda saw the hat. A symbol of so much for them, for their history.

Under Elphaba's silent, longing gaze, she picked it up.

With a heavy heart, she placed it on top of her Elphie’s hair, pushing strands of hair behind her ears.

The guards were impossibly close now.

They looked at the window right beside them.

Elphaba grabbed the broom. Glinda cupped her face with both hands, taking a deep breath before opening her lips again, voice almost drowned by the sounds of footsteps climbing the building they were in.

[sung]

I hope it brings you bliss

[GLINDA & ELPHABA]

I really hope you get it

And you don't live to regret it

I hope you're happy in the end

I hope you're happy my...

“...love.”

“OPEN UP”

They both closed their eyes for one second as the door was battered.

“You’ll be alright,” Elphaba said, “now you’re a seasoned traveller. “This is just the return leg of a voyage you already know.”

She put her face against Glinda’s and kissed her. “Hold out, if you can,” she murmured, and kissed her again. “Hold out, my sweet.”

Elphaba pushed her away right as the door was brought down.

Glinda tried to grab her hand. She failed.

“STOP her!”

Elphaba climbed on the broom, and jumped, hovering a few feet away from the building as the guards grabbed at Glinda as she screamed at them, all logical thought gone from her mind.

They would find each other again. They had to, but until then…

“Leave her alone! It’s me you want. It’s me! It’s me!” Elphaba bellowed, her voice carrying out across the city.

[ELPHABA]

So if you care to find me

Look to the western sky!

As someone told me lately

"Everyone deserves the chance to fly!"

And if I'm flying solo

At least I'm flying free

To those who ground me

Take a message back from me

Tell them how I am defying gravity!

I'm flying high, defying gravity!

And soon, I'll match them in renown

And nobody in all of Oz

No wizard that there is or was

Is ever gonna bring me down!

[GLINDA]

I hope you're happy

[CITIZENS OF OZ]

Look at her! She's wicked!

Get her!

[ELPHABA]

Bring me down!

[CITIZENS OF OZ]

No one mourns the wicked!

So we've got to bring her...

[ELPHABA]

Oh!

[CITIZENS OF OZ]

...down!
