Chapter Text

The birth of a new endless use to be big news.

Back when the universe was still settling and forming itself it may have seemed to everyone else the endless were born back to back and only a short amount of time between them. But for the Endless themselves the time between each of their births felt significantly longer then for others. So, when a set of twins were born it was big news for the whole family. Dream, like all his other siblings, was quick to go greet the closest one to him.

Never realizing what Desire would one day mean to him.

Chapter Text

“Did you hear the good news?”

The voice of his older sister speaking to him stopped Dream in his work. A little disappointingly too, given he was just adding on the final wing to his palace. The current heart of his Dreaming being so close to being done after days and nights of endless work.

“News?” Dream asked her trying to focus once again on building while listening at the same time.

Death didn’t take offense to him not turning to her. After his birth Dream seemed to be the busiest of them. Even her work load didn’t match his yet, though Destiny did say one day her work load would surpass them all. Dream was currently in the midst of prepping for when their was a boom in population across all the known universes, and he’d have to inhabit them all in their sleeping times.

“We’ve two new siblings.” Death said a bit of excitement in her voice. So rare for her really. She was more sober one of them all. A bit bitter about her function and resentful of how hated she was by the creatures they served.

Which is why she was always so excited to add to their family. Finding that the only beings who saw her favorably were the ones she was related to. Having a new sibling was adding just one more person who was actually capable of loving and liking her.

Dream dropped what he was doing finally and turned to her. Face completely intrigued and giving her his full attention. Death looked taken aback at that. She’s never been able to s completely take Dream from his work.

“Another set of twins has been born?” Dream says. Thinking on how Death and Destiny were the first and then later him on his own and finally Destruction. Dream’s always been the baby up until Destruction was born. He never thought he’d be so interested to hear about becoming a older sibling but there was an undeniable flutter in his stomach at the thought when Destruction was born and once again hearing this. He found he rather liked doting on his loved ones more then being doted on. Death jokes that’s why Destruction is so spoiled now.

Death smiled at him, a real smile for once. Adoring seeing her younger brother so interested. Especially since her own twin wasn’t that surprised, or shocked at all really, and had simply taken it as them needing to do their typical welcome before moving on.

“Mom and Dad have been more all over each then usual it would seem.” Death joked. Their affectionate parents were almost gross in how they acted sometimes, but it was so nice to see them together all the same Dream smiled at her small joke before Death sobered up again.

“I won’t be able to go see them any time soon... it’s winter so, infant mortality has risen. Still, I think someone should go greet them both. They shouldn’t be ignored after just coming into the world.” Death said with a faraway look. Dream nodded at her words.

“I will go greet them.” Dream says, the two of them knowing well that none of the rest of their family was trustworthy in doing so.

Death and Destiny were infinitely busy. Their parents never bothered with such things. Destruction was just plain unreliable. Very lovable but definitely unreliable. Death gave a weak smile that was a lip lift then anything as she stood to leave. Giving Dream a pat on the shoulder as she went.

“Thanks baby brother.”

Desire smiled as the huffed a free lock of white hair out their face.

Long, wild, and mane like. The nomadic people in the world now viewing such animal like hair as the epitome of beauty, so of course Desire came into the world looking as such. They must say, it looks rather good with their golden sometimes catlike eyes. They admired their features and long clawlike nails. Thinking of painting their ebony skin. Some bright yellows or white strikes to mimic strips would look rather nice with their natural lion aesthetic.

“Oh.” they said pleasantly surprised as such lines began appearing on their face with the simple thought. They contemplated adding fangs for just a moment before they thought against it. Looking cat-like was not the same as actually being half cat. That may be too much and go from furiously beautiful to plain monstrously in-human and frightening.

They only spent a while taking in their appearance before looking around at their home. Their realm composed of their body and posed elegantly in the sky. Desire had taken up in the heart. Fancying the look of the chambers and all the red everywhere. Something that had quickly become Desire’s favorite color. Outside of that Desire dedicated the rest of their ‘body’ of a realm to the Desire in the world.

The brain for seeking knowledge, the hands for reaching ambitions, the feet for change in destination, each part of it holding the needs and desire of all living things and otherwise. The heart of course the desire of emotion. Love in particular being the one Desire adored most, unsurprisingly. That alone being a big part of why they took the heart as their place of rest. Soaking in those emotions both the good in the bad was intoxicating even for the being themselves.

Desire was ecstatic to try them all themselves. Having the blessing of coming into the world knowing just who that person would be for them. Knowing just how they were connected. A promise given to Desire to have all they could need unlike so many unlucky few.

Dream of the Endless.

Desire’s greatest love, other half, companion, compatriot, mirror image. There were so many things to call them and Desire couldn’t wait to use every single title. To meet the being he was meant for as much as he was meant for all the beings they both served. Yet at the same time in a completely different sense.

Desire had spent every moment of their existence so far, not really long but still, ensuring the perfection of their home, of themselves in every way. To truly make in impression when they met Dream. To not disappoint him. Many times feeling they might be ready enough to finally go see him. To call at the very least, but always finding imperfection in themselves at every attempt and not being ready to just... go for it. Desire has been passing back and forth in their mirror for a while now. They were never going to feel ready.

At least they thought so, until a voice rang through the chambers of their home.

“Hello? My sibling, I’ve come to greet you.” Dream’s voice rang through the unique home around him.

He’d never seen a structure like this before and was rather fascinated by it. He did not know the name of his new sibling nor their function. Sometimes one’s realm could help give way to that but Dream was having trouble guessing in this case. What could living in ones own body be about?

“I apologize for entering without permission.” Dream says calmly.

It was only polite to call first before entering another Endless home but his siblings were knew after all and they had no means of calling just yet. Not until Dream gave them his sigil and received one in return. Still it only felt right to apologize and stay within the area he’d entered before getting permission to come further in.

The sound of fast running feet could be heard coming from one of the many twist and turns before Dream and he felt a little tense at the sudden appearance of his sibling. Turning around a corner. A large excited smile on their face. Wearing nothing but lion furs, dark in complexion, long black nails, mane like white hair, and strikingly beautiful golden eyes. A truly lovely visage they’d taken on for this age. Dare Dream say the embodiment of beauty for this time.

Dream’s eyes widened slightly when their new sibling gasped at the sight of them. Rushing down the stairs before them and quiet literally making a leap for his arms. Dream acted on instinct, opening his arms and catching the suddenly jumping Endless. The other wrapping around him happily and giggling as Dream stumbled slightly at the unexpected move. Further surprised when his new sibling pulled back enough to plant a quick kiss on his lips before re-meeting his eyes.

“Hi.” They said happily and with a small flutter of their eyes.

“Hello.” Dream said with a perplexed smile at the welcome, still holding them up. It being easier with their legs wrapped firmly around his waist and holding themselves up with arms on his shoulder. A loving look on their face as they sighed softly while taking in dream’s face as if it was the sweetest thing they’ve ever seen.

“I’m Desire. I’m so glad to meet you.” They said, finally giving Dream a name.

Oh, that explained it.

With hearing the name came an understanding that only Endless were capable of. Being able to immediately comprehend what ‘Desire’ was as soon as the word came into existence. Many moments in some of the more recent Dream’s he’s seen playing out in his mind. If he had to picture what such an anthropomorphic embodiment of that would look and behave like it was certainly this. For all Dream knew this was standard greeting for a creature like Desire. All of a sudden the hug and kiss made a lot more sense. As well as the natural flirty tone and body language.

“I am Dream.” He said in return with a welcoming smile of his own. Desire grinning further at his own introduction.

Looking a little lost, Dream gently put Desire back on the ground. Their arms still wrapped around his neck but legs no longer around him. He didn’t know if that would be rude or not but he couldn't exactly do what he came here to do with Desire all over him. Desire seemed unbothered and was content to just stay pressed against his chest while looking into his deep star filled eyes.

“I love your eyes.” Desire sighed out wistfully with a small loving smile and lowered lids. Dream batted his own eyes in surprised at that but seemed pleased at the compliment.

“Yours are very lovely as well.” Dream returned, meaning it. Desire had rather lovely eyes. The younger Endless grinned wider and giggled at the words.

“Thank you.” They said, using a finger to twirl a lock of hair.

“If I may, I’ve brought you something.” Dream said looking at the lack of space between them.

Desire was too excited for what he’d brought them to insist on further contact. They stepped back enough to give space but certainly were closer than most would be. Looking impatiently as Dream slowly reached into his clock. Dream chuckled himself thinking his new siblings was rather adorable so far.

Dream pulled out a smaller silver sigil of his helm. Big enough to properly display but certainly not the size of the real thing. He offered it to Desire who looked as if they been given the greatest gift in existence. Looking at it in awe as they took it in their hands carefully. Looking up at Dream after a second.

“It’s my sigil. So that you might call or summon me in your gallery.” Dream said, wondering if it needed explanation. He wasn’t there for Destruction first when he was born, Destiny was surprisingly enough, so he doesn’t know if was something explained or not.

Desire batted happy tears from their eyes as they smiled and blushed softly. Cradling Dream’s helm to their chest. Dream was weirdly touched to see such a simple obligatory gift taken with such happiness. It both warmed his heart and made him fill guilty for not bring more with the intended intention of that reaction.

“Thank you. I’ll treasure it.” Desire said happily. That is before looking up and grabbing Dream’s hand.

“I have something for you too.” They said and started pulling Dream along with no further words. Dream gave a small ‘oh’ but allowed himself to be pulled.

Making their way up the entrance stairs and into a mass of even more chambers. Some wide and vast, other’s thin and short. Mimicking the human heart perfectly. As they got deeper inside, Dream couldn’t help but notice the roller coaster of emotion he was feeling. While not strong enough to affect an Endless he imagines a human or similar species would be overwhelmed by the whiplash of it all. Sensing the collection emotions that come with Desire with each passing chamber. He looked over to Desire who seemed to indulge in each one. Switching from wide smiles, to jealous frowns, to weepy heart break. Walking through it with a weird ease while still showing it all in their person.

This continued until they made it to the center of it all. The biggest and most open chamber. Made of what seemed to be a small room. A place to lay, sit and rest, as well as what must be Desire’s gallery off to the side. Desire letting go of his hand as they entered carry over his helm happily.

Looking about at the empty spaces they had open for their siblings sigils. Positioning Dream’s all around until they happily settled with it just off from the middle towards the left. While not in the center it gave perfect view of it from their place of rest in the room. Dream watching patiently and with an indulgent smile. Enjoying seeing how genuinely their Desire carried themselves and interacted in life. It was refreshing with the amount of shut-ins this family had. Keeping their emotions below the surface as the focus on their functions while Desire expression of emotion actually was their function.

Dream noticed they had only one other sigil up. A large hook, that Dream didn’t recognize. Must be from the other twin. Dream was already trying to guess what it could symbolize when desire came over to him again. Coming up and taking his hand on instinct, seemingly for the pure pleasure of touching.

“I wish to give you my sigil now.” Desire said, as if to asks for permission. Dream nodded at the words. His own long hair defying gravity and staying in place despite the move and mop it was on his head.

Desire smiled at that before letting go of him again. Putting on a look of concentration as they raised ah and to their bare chest. Aiming their nails it the center. Dream watched with fascination as the nails did not stop at the top of flesh but rather sunk inside. Desire giving an annoyed and determined look as they narrowed their eyes in concentration. Lifting their other hand to do the same. Dream watched as they gave a soft gasp as they pulled form their chest a silver heart. Not the anatomical one like he half expected but rather the new symbol of a heart humans had designed recently. Supposedly it was the combination of two hearts joined as one to form something new and of great significance. Desire sighed satisfied and a little tired looking as they presented it to Dream, almost nervous.

Dream took it just as gently as Desire had taken his helm. Holding it close and with great care.

“Thank you, my sibling.” Dream said, taking the extra mile to place a kiss on their cheek. Feeling a simple thank you was not enough after the reaction Desire had given earlier from their gift. Desire brightened at that as they touched the side of their face. Leaning into their own hand and smiling lovingly back at Dream.

“Of course.” They said swaying a little as Dream carefully put away the sigil in his robes. Desire mentally indulging in the lovely thought of Dream caring around their heart with him everywhere.

“While, it has been a joy to meet you. I must go greet our other sibling.” Dream said kindly and Desire pouted but nodded in understanding. Dream chuckled once again at the cute behavior. Reaching out and running a hand through their hair.

“May I visit again sometime?” Dream asked them and Desire looked up, lighting up again.

“Yes!” They said immediately and dream smiled at that.

“May I come to your home next time?” Desire asked and Dream nodded as well.

“Yes, ju- oof!” Dream couldn’t finish his sentence before Desire was tackling him in a bear hug again. Laughing happily at the response as they collapsed on the floor together. Dream could do nothing but join them and rest a hand on their hair absently. This one was going to be a handful.

Dream doesn’t think he minds, though.
