Chapter 1: Escape

Chapter Text

"Come on, G, we gotta go," Miec hissed fighting off the headache the brief mental message had caused. While telepathy was useful, it was also physically painful. "We have to actually escape, you know."

"Coming!" G scrambled to his feet, leaning over to grab his sneakers. He followed Miec down the hall, carrying the shoes.

"This door is locked and alarmed," Miec whispered. "Get your ass up here and fix that!"

G eased his way past Miec and lay a hand on the door. It only took a moment until there was a snick as the lock released. Miec hoped G had gotten the alarm.

"Go! Go! Go!" Miec pushed G through the door and out of the building they had been held in for the last three days. There was no blaring alarm, so that was a good thing.

"Ow! Ow! Ow!" G whined as his bare feet flew across the stones in the open parking lot.

"Quiet! They shouldn't see us," Miec whispered as he focused on making sure they weren't seen. "Get to the fence and follow it to the left."

"Left? Really?" G whined. "I hate going left."

"That was one time," Miec sighed. "Keep going."

"I gotta put the shoes on," G replied. "I'm not going to get far enough without them."

"I told you..." Miec retorted. "At the fence. I can hide us long enough for you to put them on there."

"Man... I'm going to bleed all over them... I like these shoes..."

Miec ignored the complaint, focused on keeping the 'notice me not' spell going. There had to be cameras and sentries but they didn't need long, just long to get out of sight of the building.

G dropped to the ground as they reached the fence and hastily pulled on the sneakers. He gave them a rough tie and bounced up.

"Okay, that's better," G admitted, stamping his feet in the sneakers.

"Keep going," Miec directed. "Follow the fence. We need to get to the back corner."

"How far is that?" G asked as they started off.

"Dunno," Miec admitted. "Far back corner is all I got."

"Man, this place is huge!" G muttered. "It could be a mile."

"Could be further, so keep going," Miec replied testily.

The good news was that they were soon out of sight of the building. The bad news was that the only clear space in the forest was along the fence. The brush was thick and overgrown, except for six feet near the fence. And it had evidently rained recently, as evidenced by mud, large puddles, and even a couple of fast-flowing streams.

Even with a relatively clear path -- in spite of the water problems -- it took them half an hour to arrive at that back corner. Miec figured it was a good mile-and-a-half to the meeting point.

"What the fuck are they hiding, all the way back here?" G wondered as he eased his way into the corner space. The fact that they could be seen from two different directions made them uneasy.

"Just because there are no obvious cameras also doesn't mean there aren't any," Miec replied. He was starting to get worried. They were too exposed where they were. The fence itself was a bad option. He could feel the electricity humming through the mesh and the razor wire at the top. The worrisome part was that there had been runes he didn't have the time to decipher on the posts.

Going into the brush was probably just as bad an option. He had no idea what kind of vegetation was behind the brush and, well, he knew there were plants that happily would eat people. So... no playing in the woods.

"Come on..." Miec muttered to himself. "Now would be good..."

KA-BOOM!

"Took you long enough," Miec sighed. He settled down, knowing their rescue would be here any minute now.

"Sweetheart, were you worried?" Peter asked with a small grin as he appeared on the other side of the fence.

"You weren't the one locked in a box," Miec replied tartly. "Next time, you can be the bait."

Peter shrugged as he clipped a lead to the fence. "Meh. It's overrated."

"Damn straight," Miec replied.

"Not sure what's going to happen here," Peter admitted as he reached for more leads.

"There are runes on the fence posts," Miec pointed out. "I haven't had a chance to look at them too closely."

"Oh. Fuck," Peter swore. "I need to look."

Peter went to the closest post and traced the runes. Miec made himself pay attention to their surroundings and not to what Peter was doing.

"I need G for this," Peter said.

"G, get your ass over here," Miec called.

G hurried over. "What do you need?"

"I'm like ninety-nine percent positive that this is a locking rune," Peter said, pointing to the rune on the other side of the post from where G and Miec stood. "If you can unlock it, then that will make everything simpler."

G rolled his eyes. "This is going to hurt, isn't it?"

"Sorry?" Peter replied. "But without that, anything I do from here isn't going to work."

"All right," G sighed. "What do I do?"

"The rune is here." Peter pointed about waist height. "Treat it like any lock, and it should take the entire fence system down."

"That's kind of lazy of them," Miec pointed out.

"Only so many locking runes, unless you go to the trouble to design your own. And that is magically expensive to maintain," Peter shrugged. "But you would never see it from the inside to know it's there, which is the best deterrent."

"Okay." G took a breath and placed a hand on the post, opposite where Peter had pointed. Miec could see when the electricity hit and G fought the pain long enough to unlock the rune.

"Got it!" Peter announced.

Miec pushed against G, to break his connection with the fence. Miec caught G as he passed out.

"It's still electrified," Miec pointed out.

"That's now relatively simple to deal with," Peter nodded. "Back to the corner. There's more shelter there on this side."

Derek came out of the trees at that point, looking worried when he saw G sprawled on the ground.

"We had to have G take out a locking rune," Peter said. "It's just electricity, he should be fine soon."

"Just electricity..." Derek shook his head.

"Sorry, no other way to deal with it," Peter replied as he carefully attached several wires to the fence. "I'd step back, if I were you," he said, looking up at Miec.

Miec dragged G away from the fence, as close to the brush as he dared to get.

There was a huge crackle of electricity, and smoke filled the air.

"Okay, we have it," Peter said. "Derek, you can get G. That will be faster than Miec managing him."

Derek was there in an instant, carefully picking up G and heading back to the opening in the fence. Miec stayed right behind them and followed Derek out.

"Do you have it?" Peter asked.

Miec gave what he knew was a feral grin. "I got it. And more."

"Good!" Peter nodded. "Come on. The diversion at the front won't keep them forever. Let's go."

"Home?" Miec asked, hopefully.

"Yes, sweetheart," Peter nodded. "Home."

Miec leaned in for a quick kiss. "Lead the way."

Notes:

It doesn't really stand alone but I'm not sure where it's going.. but I wanted to share at least this much...

More if-and-when the muse strikes! No promises!
