Work Text:

Mia sat beneath the sprawling canopy of a centuries-old tree, its thick branches casting dappled shadows over the lush green grass in Centopia. The tree’s bark was rough beneath her fingers, grounding her as she watched Yuko and Mo by the river's edge, their reflections shimmering in the crystal-clear water. The warm sunlight bathed the landscape in a golden hue, wrapping around Mia like a soft, comforting embrace, while a gentle breeze rustled the leaves overhead and carried the sweet fragrance of nearby blooming wildflowers.

Despite the serenity of the scene, Mia’s heart pounded in her chest, an erratic rhythm that matched the flurry of her thoughts. She tried to soak in the peacefulness, to lose herself in the moment, but her gaze kept drifting to Yuko. The warrior stood tall, her every movement precise and calculated, as if she were one with the bow she held so effortlessly. Yuko’s posture was perfect—back straight, shoulders relaxed—and with one fluid motion, she drew the string back, her muscles taut but controlled, her sharp eyes locked on the target across the river.

Mia’s breath hitched as Yuko released the arrow. It cut through the air with a soft whistle before thudding into the target, dead center. The accuracy, the ease—it was as if Yuko were born for this.

"Wow," Mia whispered, her voice barely audible, as if she were afraid to disturb the perfection of the moment. Her eyes lingered on Yuko, unable to tear away from the sight of her in action. There was something magnetic about her—how effortlessly she commanded the space around her, her confidence radiating like the sun itself. Mia’s cheeks warmed, a subtle blush creeping across her skin, and she found herself shyly averting her gaze for a moment, embarrassed by the intensity of her admiration.

And then there was Mo, his eyes twinkling with warmth and mischief as he flashed a wide grin and gave Yuko a playful nudge. His touch was gentle, affectionate, and his laughter—rich and deep—rippled through the air like the steady hum of a calming melody. It was the kind of laugh that had a way of easing tension, as if everything would always work out in the end just because Mo believed it would. He exuded an effortless charm, his presence so steady and reassuring that it made Mia feel safe, even in the midst of her swirling emotions.

With a lighthearted smirk, Mo raised his bow and pulled the string back, mimicking Yuko’s stance, though with a more relaxed air. His muscles tensed briefly as he aimed, then released. The arrow whizzed through the air, striking the target with a satisfying thud—just shy of Yuko’s perfectly centered shot. Mia couldn’t help but admire how easily Mo brushed off the near miss, his easygoing attitude always making it seem like nothing was ever too serious.

"Close, but not quite!" Yuko teased, her tone laced with playful competitiveness as she poked him in the side, her laughter infectious.

Mo’s eyes sparkled, and he let out another low chuckle, the sound wrapping around Mia like a warm blanket. "I’m just letting you win," he shot back with a wink, his voice smooth, full of teasing affection.

Watching them, Mia felt a small smile tug at her lips, unable to resist the light-hearted energy that seemed to buzz between the two. There was something so comfortable, so right, about being around Mo and Yuko—like being wrapped in a cocoon of friendship and laughter. But then there were the other feelings, the ones she didn’t quite know how to handle. The butterflies that fluttered wildly in her stomach whenever Yuko glanced her way, or how her heart would stutter in her chest whenever Mo leaned in just a little too close.

She felt light and giddy in their presence, as if the world was a little brighter and her worries a little smaller when she was with them. But then there was also the quiet, gnawing anxiety—the confusion that came from not knowing how to navigate these emotions. Mia’s gaze dropped to the ground for a moment, her fingers idly playing with a blade of grass as she sighed softly. How could she possibly explain the tangle of emotions she felt? How could she tell anyone that her heart didn’t just race for one person, but two—and not just anyone, but her best friends?

The thought sent a wave of embarrassment through her, heat creeping up her neck and into her cheeks. It was one thing to have a crush, but to have feelings for both Yuko and Mo? That was a level of complication she wasn’t prepared to face. Hugging her knees to her chest, Mia watched them as they continued to bicker playfully over who had the better shot.

“Mia, come join us!” Mo’s voice rang out, clear and cheerful, cutting through Mia’s reverie and pulling her back to the present.

Mia’s heart gave an involuntary leap, her thoughts scattering like leaves in a breeze. “Oh, um, I’m not really that good at archery...” she admitted, feeling a flush of embarrassment creep up her neck.

“You don’t have to be good,” Yuko chimed in, her voice smooth and inviting, as she walked toward Mia with a confident stride. She offered a hand with a playful wink, her eyes twinkling with encouragement. “We’ll teach you.”

Mia hesitated for a heartbeat, her nerves twisting in her stomach, but then she reached out and took Yuko’s hand. The moment their fingers met, a jolt of warmth surged through her, an electric sensation that seemed to echo through her entire body. Yuko’s hand was strong, with a firm grip, yet the touch was gentle and reassuring, and Mia’s pulse quickened with the unexpected thrill of contact. Her cheeks felt suddenly warmer, and her stomach fluttered uncontrollably, as if her emotions had taken flight.

“Alright,” Mia said, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to keep it steady, her gaze locked onto Yuko’s. She allowed herself to be gently pulled to her feet, feeling the reassuring pressure of Yuko’s hand still enveloping hers.

Mo approached with a bow in hand, his smile soft and inviting. The warmth of his expression matched the lightheartedness of his tone. “Here, we’ll help you get started,” he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he extended the bow toward her.

They guided Mia toward the makeshift archery range, the lush grass beneath their feet crunching softly as they walked. Yuko and Mo flanked her, their presence a comforting, constant reminder of their support. Mia’s heart raced, each beat echoing in her ears as she felt the warmth of their proximity. Mo’s gentle touch was the most prominent; his hand rested lightly on her arm, his fingers warm and steady. The contact sent a subtle thrill through her, heightening her awareness of every breath she took.

Yuko stood on Mia’s other side, her posture relaxed but authoritative. Her voice, confident and reassuring, flowed over Mia in steady, measured tones. "Keep your back straight and your shoulders relaxed," Yuko instructed, her eyes never leaving Mia’s face. The sincerity in her words, the way she spoke with such calm assurance, made Mia’s nerves feel both soothed and intensified.

Mia adjusted her grip on the bow, her fingers trembling slightly as she pulled back the bowstring. Her eyes narrowed in concentration on the target in the distance. She could feel the weight of Mo and Yuko’s gaze, a combination of encouragement and scrutiny that was both comforting and nerve-wracking. Their supportive presence was like a gentle, invisible hand guiding her, yet it also intensified her awareness of every small mistake she might make. With a deep breath, Mia released the arrow, and it sailed... wide, missing the target entirely.

A soft, embarrassed laugh escaped Mia’s lips as she glanced at Yuko and Mo. “Told you I’m not good at this,” she said, her voice tinged with a mix of frustration and self-deprecation.

Yuko’s smile was warm and radiant, the kind that could light up even the cloudiest day. “You just need practice,” she said, her gaze filled with encouragement. The way her eyes crinkled at the corners made Mia’s heart race faster, a familiar flutter of affection rising within her.

Mo’s grin matched Yuko’s, exuding a relaxed confidence that was as infectious as it was comforting. “We’ll be here to help,” he said, his tone inviting and supportive. “Any time.”

Mia’s heart swelled at their words, feeling a rush of warmth and gratitude. The way Yuko and Mo looked at her—like she was important, like she truly mattered—filled her with a deep sense of belonging. Their support, their belief in her, was more than just reassuring; it made her feel seen and valued in a way she hadn’t fully experienced before. Being with Yuko and Mo felt like finding a place where she was meant to be, where every moment spent together was a reminder of how perfectly she fit into their world.

Unbeknownst to Mia, as she prepared for another attempt at archery, Yuko and Mo exchanged a silent communication over her head. Their eyes met in a quick, shared glance—a moment of understanding that spoke volumes. A subtle, knowing smile flitted across their faces, conveying a depth of emotion and shared sentiment that went beyond words. They had both noticed the way Mia’s gaze would linger on them, the way a soft blush would rise to her cheeks whenever they were near.

Yuko’s expression softened with a mixture of tenderness and amusement. Her eyes, usually so focused and resolute, held a gentle warmth as she looked at Mia. The connection she felt was more than mere friendship—it was something deeper, a quiet yearning that she had yet to fully acknowledge. Mo’s smile mirrored Yuko’s, a blend of affection and anticipation. He too had felt the subtle pull of something beyond camaraderie, an attraction that had grown steadily in the moments they shared.

They had not spoken about it aloud, the feelings they harbored for Mia remaining unspoken, a delicate secret they both cherished. For now, they found contentment in being by her side—supporting her as she practiced, laughing together at the little mishaps, and savoring the tranquil moments they spent in each other's company. Their enjoyment was in the present, in the simple pleasure of her company and the shared experiences that bound them together.

Yuko and Mo felt the weight of their emotions with a quiet confidence. The soft tug of something more than friendship was present, a gentle yet persistent undercurrent that neither rushed to articulate. They were content to let their feelings grow in the natural course of their interactions, allowing their bond to deepen without pressure. The joy was in being with Mia, in the small, everyday moments they shared. For now, that was enough. The future, with all its possibilities, could wait. What mattered most was the here and now—Mia’s laughter, her presence, and the connection that was evolving slowly but surely.

Notes:

the love triangle is probably my least favorite part of mia and me. like, why not just go with polyamory? everybody wins that way!
