A groan of pain escaped from the cold lips marked by the new season, usually celebrated with a rising smirk on his face.
This life he cherished until the last embers became a blurry memory in his mind: the treasured frames of his childhood friend teasing him for being too clingy were replaced by the lifeless bodies of the people who used to believe in second chances. Katsuki Bakugo was a forgotten name, one beyond the thousands of innocents who fell into this trick, crushing their hope into ashes.
Hesitant glances transformed into a pale realization that everyone could fall overnight with one second of inattention…even the strongest soldiers. All the bruised and defigured faces in the trench were simple shadows in the crowd: Most of them appeared at the wrong place at the right time for the royal family who took advantage of their vulnerability. The golden-haired man was a simple farmer but noticed how the guy in his twenties beside him was a baker who had a dream of creating his own pastry, such as the older figure a few meters away with his bandage, sent here by his own grandchildren for the heritage.
Each soul owned a specific narrative that caught the attention of the most curious eyes, finding a slight hope in their misery. Katsuki was a solitary spirit but didn’t mind the company of a few people who shared memories of their past lives. The most touching one was from this teenager who decided to choose war instead of an arranged marriage by his parents. This kid was only 15, and each petrified glance on his face was a carbon copy of the one appearing on Katsumi’s face. The similarities in their names wouldn’t make things easier for this father, who had the impression of protecting this brat as if it were its own.
The blond wasn’t the kind of person to easily reveal his humanity, especially under those conditions, but the sight of the vulnerable teenager caught him by surprise. The recent days have been emotionally exhausting, like the new faces who joined this cruel army and led to a few seconds of inattention that caused deep injuries to the most fragile people, including Kenzo. The teenager was unable to stare at his bloody hand, being the result of a target intercepting his path and using him as a way to get out of his way. The shorter figure had no choice but to put himself outside the crowd and face his tears, wondering when this hell would’ve stopped.
The background noises echoed louder in their sensitive ears, forcing the check on him by putting his knees and observing the shaking form. This brat discovered the lifestyle expecting him from now on, especially if this shitty war welcomed them in their dying breath: In this cruel world, power and seductive words would be more tempting than brutality and honesty, offering more advantages for a specific social status.
“These assholes deserved it, they started it first,” the blond pointed out with a sigh. He didn’t want to scare the teenager or make him uncomfortable, but he refused to leave him with visible injuries that needed to be healed as soon as possible. The alpha might be feared by the opponent, but he remains a father who projects his lost daughter into each underage shadow he meets on this crazy journey.
The teenager raised his head to meet the crimson eyes, noticing how the cold expression the soldier usually wears was now replaced with concern. It was a well-known fact that the blond was a solitary person, but seeing this heartless soldier showing affection was unpredictable. It would be a lie to admit how Kastuki Bakugo was admired for his ability to survive, especially when it’s been endless years since this unfair fight started. After all, many people died on the same battlefield, and the strong figure remained alive, holding on to the hope of escape from this nightmare.
“That’s what I like to say to convince myself that our opponent is also stuck in the same situation as us,” the taller figure explained with a grin, noticing how the black irises stared at him with surprise. Call him naive, but he saw a few similarities with Katsumi, making him attached for personal reasons. “I know what you think, and you’re right: You’re a monster because they formed us to act that way, trying to take away our humanity for their selfish sake. Yet, it’s not your fault for doing the bare minimum to survive, even if this means doing something against your values.”
“They didn’t ask for such a fate,” Kenzo mumbled in his beard, putting his head closer to his knees. He recalled the moment when his parents decided to force him into a tragic fate, leading him to change his life by facing the unknown against his will. Back in the day, the king and queen made sure to explain how he’d have enough protection to survive but barely acknowledged his call for help.
“We’re not different from them,” the farmer assured with a reassuring tone, noticing how the teenager broke their shield to open himself to his calming figure“This world is cruel in every way possible: Your happiness might disappear overnight because you gave your trust to the wrong people. We can’t predict how tomorrow will look like, but make sure to cherish this day as if it’s your last, kiddo.”
“It’s scary,” the teenager confessed, looking into the crimson eyes. There was something touching with the taller figure staring at him like a father would do with his child, wondering what was the story behind those broken irises. “Maybe I should’ve accepted the arranged marriage if I knew what was expecting me here.”
Katsuki stayed silent, deciding to let his fingers ruffle the messy curls, having an echo about the exact look on his daughter’s face. Indeed, he decided to rely on the frames that blessed his nights: He remembered the way Katsumi’s genuine smile melted his heart, how her tears were a heartbreaking sight, and the delicate freckles on her cheeks. Each second he had passed with his daughter became a precious memory to this broken soul, who found hope in the unknown…the same tricky system that took his happy ending away from him.
“Maybe, but you would've been tormented by the what-if if you chose the safest option,” the blond added, making sure to check on the visible scars on the other’s body. It was evident how they looked deep enough to hurt, explaining why the brat ran away from the nursery to have his mental breakdown away from the judgemental glance. After all, he was a naive soul in this suffocating atmosphere that killed him from the inside, especially when he was one of the youngest in this crime scene. “There’s nothing wrong with trusting the unknown, it could either bring you the most unforgettable moment in your life or the worst. It’s worth the risk if this means experiencing these feelings once, knowing how life is as fragile as a thin string.”
Kenzo noticed how the sadder glance in the crimson irises once the confession escaped from the soldier’s lips, almost like he was holding back his tears. It was heartbreaking to see a farmer who came here against his will, taking an innocent teenager under his arms to ensure his protection, almost like he was losing himself in his own illusions. Kenzo heard many whispers about the story residing behind this tortured gaze, but he wondered how his family must’ve felt after the sudden departure.
“You remind me of someone I care about,” Katsuki explained, remembering the unforgettable memories of the newborn he saw the first time on this fateful night. His heart arched at the idea that his daughter was suffering from afar, but he knew he could trust his husband to cheer her up. The worst part of this situation was how the blond was forced to be a ghost in his loved ones' lives, wondering if they’d know about his death if fate turned against him. “I would do anything to see her again and explain how she's been the best thing that ever happened to me. You know, everyone is doomed to face our biggest regrets once we reach this haunted place: Ghosts are making a bet about the last name standing here after being traumatized for so long.”
Kenzo didn’t know why he was touched by the tone used in the blond’s voice, almost like his inner child would’ve loved to have those words destined for him. His parents have been distant since his sister’s departure, leaving him aside and understanding how he was on his own for the rest of his life. The sincerity in each of the farmer’s words echoed the personal issues experienced by the teenager, realizing how they should probably support each other instead of fearing the people who will suffer from the same fate.
“Each story deserves to be heard, even if the owner is no longer a part of this world,” he expressed with a light smile, recalling the previous revelation made by his mate and daughter, who kept fighting even if they were out of reach. There were times darker than the others, where death wouldn’t be an issue…but it would’ve been unfair for his family, who survived the entire time waiting for his return. After all, he was the one explaining how facing a grave would be a fate worse than death! “Yours didn’t start in the way you expected, but this doesn’t mean you have to shut it down. I’ve known a bunch of people who kept fighting until they got the bright days they deserve.”
“The person in your story…” the teenager whispered with a hesitant glance. He didn’t want to invade the stranger’s personal life but was inspired by his words. It was the same way the royal couple and his family used to trick him for their selfish benefit, but their meaning was different under these circumstances. “Who is she to you ?”
Katsuki took a quick glimpse into their surroundings to feel the curious look staring at their shadows. Many questioned if the soldier would be able to convince a stubborn soul like the teenager to get help but have a slight faith in the result of their conversation. A few people were aware of the reason for his presence here, but he wouldn’t hide a lie…not this time when he wanted to make his husband proud from afar.
“It’s the result of timeless devotion between the man I love and my messed up heart,” he answered, remembering the previous frames he left behind on the farm. “Her name is Katsumi Bakugo, and she’s the strongest person I know with my childhood friend. I never had the occasion to express out loud how much I love her, but I know she’s safe, and it’s a question of time before seeing her smile again.”
“I’m sorry,” the shorter figure added with a silenced voice, afraid to bother the soldier who shared a personal part of his life. After all, Katsuki could’ve chosen the safest option and skipped the topic like the others did with their past, but he stood by his values and wanted to give justice to his loved ones.
“You did nothing wrong, kiddo,” Katsuki expressed with a reassuring smile, glad to see how the hesitant figure was now trusting him. “Listen, like the other extras here, I despise this place and want to get out of here as soon as possible. Yet, if something happens to me, I would like to be remembered as someone who fought for his freedom and family’s safety. It’s the only thing keeping me alive in this shit, but let me ask you a question…how would you like to be remembered ?”
A sudden silence filled their conversation, realizing how the background noises crossed their fragile ears again. It appeared like a slap on the teenager’s face, realizing how they’d been in their own bubble for a temporary moment while the word didn’t give the same favor to the others. It was one of those rare occasions where peace was an option, staying away from the cruelty of this world.
However, the previous question caught Kenzo off guard, realizing how he didn’t have the answer to this meaningful talk concerning his goal to even stay alive. After all, the heartbreaking story about a shattered family was a good argument to keep fighting, but Kenzo had no one else: he might return home, but his parents would bring his name into shame. He was a shadow in the crowd of numerous names, losing itself through the decades until they became nothing but ashes. He refused to follow this path and wanted to be remembered for trying.
“I’m just a child learning the cruel truth about adulthood, but I want to let the world know how I’ve been trying my best until the end,” he confided, regaining this light hope he lost when he reached his place the first time. His black eyes met the crimson ones, who looked at him with a grin on his face. He wondered if Katsumi would experience the same emotions once they met again. “Do you think it’s possible ?”
There was so much hesitation in the teenager’s glance after releasing his thoughts into questions, being afraid of the answer. Yet, the golden-haired man decided to reassure the younger figure who needed support: If Katsuki was older enough to figure things out by himself, things might be more complex for a vulnerable soul like Kenzo.
“I think everything is possible if you believe in yourself,” he declared, noticing how the teary eyes looked at him with surprise. “It’s what I would’ve said to my daughter if she was here, but you remind me of her innocence being taken away. The only promise you can make is to prove to yourself how this is worth the fight despite the darkest part of this war.”
Kenzo didn’t know when he started to cry, but the tears rolling down his skin brought him back to his current reality. The black-haired boy was barely able to know what meal he would eat tonight; and he found himself stuck in the worst-case scenario where his life was on the line for each of his decisions! Until now, no one had proposed their help, even if some glances were trying to send him luck when their shadows crossed each other’s path, but seeing Katsuki putting himself on the same level as he was relieving.
“From now on, we both need to survive until the end of this shitty war and share each other’s stories with the world,” the farmer affirmed, his face expressing how pure his words were.
Kenzo was still young to figure out what he wanted if he left this place, but he decided to give his trust to this man who reminded him how his parents used to treat him as a human and not a bother in their own house. The background noises regained their ears, realizing how the injuries were still open, and it was a question of time before passing out. He accepted the calloused hands and decided to reach the infirmary, understanding how the unknown brought him to this reassuring presence that would keep him alive until the end.
Katsuki Bakugo might be a heartless soldier on the battlefield, but he remained a father who lost a part of his soul after leaving his home. Maybe his name will list itself in the long category of people who were too young to face the cruelty of this world, but tonight, his thoughts will be on his husband, who might have lost his mind from afar, begging the stars for endless protection.
——
The midnight sky covered this shade of blue that brightened their days earlier.
Those colors are used to echo as a reminder of Izuku’s cruel reality, searching for ghosts through desperate calls for help and wasted tears. The wind spread the good news, celebrating the reunion between two broken souls who’ve chased after each other for so long. Izuku Bakugo was known for holding on to hope, no matter the circumstances, even if his fake smile wasn’t convincing anyone…but his happiness had never been this intense after seeing his daughter standing at his doorstep during her 18th birthday. His heart recalled the moment when his eyes met the crimson ones, realizing how she looked like his devoted husband, who had been occupying his mind since his departure.
The stars have offered him the blessing to catch up on the lost time with his daughter, who’s been more interested in each of his stories, especially the ones concerning her father. Izuku didn’t hesitate to share an anecdote in his mind about the past life he cared for, admiring how Katsumi’s eyes widened at the fact that her parents genuinely cared about each other. She remembers listening to the heartwarming celebration of their love and how the village was implied to let the world know about this youth who saved their isolated place.
It’s been 3 years since Katsumi Bakugo returned home.
Her life drastically changed from the royalty habits she used to have in her childhood, but she felt happier with the delicious scent of her dam’s food compared to the lonely dinner with the silenced maids. As they planned, the royal couple publicly cursed her name and portrayed her as a corrupted spirit, playing with the omega’s nerves. Those assholes had the audacity to put their family’s reputation down for their stupid ego? Izuku was ready to physically conclude this conflict that lasted for too long, but Katsumi did her best to stop him.
It was touching to see how the blonde woman grew up so fast. Somedays, the freckled man still has the impression of seeing the newborn he held in his arms, but this time, his worries fade away when his eyes meet the crimson ones. This wasn’t an illusion but his new reality, even if something was missing. It was unfair to celebrate this victory without the man who made all of this possible, and the omega didn’t even try to hide the nostalgia crossing his face every time his husband’s name was mentioned.
Katsumi wasn’t stupid and could sense how the two men were desperately attached to each other. There was no doubt she was born by a true love between two shattered souls who find peace by each other’s side. However, the blonde took the time to remember the delicate frame of her only interaction with her father, who assured a timeless promise. His face was used by the years, and scars were deeply implanted in his skin, wondering if he would share their stories one day.
The blonde woman decided to stay by her dam’s side by offering a hint of novelty inside this house that needed changes. The first one was the baby room that stayed intact through the years. Katsumi remembered how she teared up at the sight of so many toys, wondering if she could’ve found her happiness in this place if fate hadn’t tricked them into dark games. Izuku explained each meaningful detail, leaving Katsumi heartbroken at the idea of replacing such a beautiful bedroom with something else. Her worries were quickly erased once the shorter man held her inside her arms, explaining how it used to be a room full of “What-Ifs”, now transforming into a more reassuring meaning.
The second big change in Izuku’s life was how he started to collect his products with his daughter. In the past years, it used to be him and the ghosts judging his miserable fate, but now the lonely afternoon was replaced with conversation and chuckles spread by the wind. It was the first time Katsumi had experienced this activity and followed each of her dam’s advice, leading them to have a bonding moment that’ll remain unforgettable to this day. Indeed, Izuku already projected this idea of teaching everything to his pup, except she wasn’t a child anymore but a grown woman who remained his biggest pride.
Slowly but surely, figures started to create a stronger bond. Those afternoons spent on their farm brought them closer, realizing how time took away this blessing that was each other’s presence. Katsumi succeded to finding reassurance in the farmer’s smile, realizing how she was able to hold him close and have a shoulder to cry on instead of talking to a ghost. Izuku became easily sensitive when it came to his daughter’s happiness, especially when she used to be a tiny human who could barely fit into his arms. However, this genuine expression crossing his face was only an argument to hide the emptiness in his chest once he was alone with his thoughts.
Loneliness has never been an issue for the omega, but the past 21 years taught him how this naive impression transformed into a stronger feeling drowning him from the inside. There wasn’t any single night since his husband’s departure that Izuku didn’t think about him: Old frames kept replaying inside his shattered soul who, forced him to never forget the man who caught his heart when they were just kids. It happened to catch the nickname escaping from his lips after a nightmare, catching the empty side of the bed and hoping his mate was still alive on the other side.
Katsumi mentioned a few times how she tried to stay in touch with the blond in her dream, but the answer remained the same: “I’m sorry, I really tried, but this doesn’t mean we have to give up on him.” His daughter was right, especially when Katsuki had been fighting for his life since he was caught in this war, sending him closer to death. Izuku couldn’t even imagine what a world without the man he loved could look like: His days would’ve been drowned in constant darkness where tears would be welcomed, digging his own grave without letting anyone notice the damage of the news. The freckled man couldn’t close his eyes without facing the lifeless body of his mate, forcing him to spend sleepless nights most of the time and lie to his daughter’s face, even if Katsumi wasn’t naive.
Tonight wasn’t an exception, and the farmer accepted his fate.
A slight sigh escaped from his lips when his footsteps echoed in the silent house, reminding the darkest days of his life. Thankfully, one glance at Katsumi’s bedroom was enough to wonder how cute she must’ve been when she was a child, dreaming about her imaginary world. The royal couple stole their happy memories to transform them into a weapon for their stupid ego, taking Katsuki Bakugo in the process…and the farmer will never forgive them for letting such a thing happen.
The omega reached the kitchen, where the letter stayed intact. He stopped counting the number of times when his eyes were mesmerized by the ink of those words that left him with mixed feelings. He was able to recite the entire content out loud with closed eyes, picturing his husband’s face. The farmer turned the candle on, letting his fingers delicately ruffle the paper, and started to read the first lines, having the impression of facing a final goodbye. Katsuki was a man of action and always kept his promises, no matter the obstacles crossing his path! Izuku trusted his mate more than anyone, such as Katsumi, who also believed in their happy ending. Yet, it was hard to experience all new memories without his mate, knowing how the blond would’ve loved to be there and be the family they always wanted to be.
The unknown used to be a reassuring promise but turned against their biggest dreams and projects. When Katsuki left this house, a part of Izuku’s soul died on the way, knowing that this was the best thing to do, but this represented his last straw. He could’ve cursed his childhood friend’s name, but it would have been unfair for the courage his lover had shown to make such a difficult decision. It was evident how the alpha felt heartbroken at the idea of leaving a tortured soul like Izuku’s behind, especially with the last trace of tears residing at the bottom of the page under the name he used to call with such devotion. He gave this part of the journey to the childhood friend who offered him his blind trust, realizing that there was no return point if death caught him first.
Izuku couldn’t help but wonder what his lover was doing at the moment.
They were so far from each other, but their mating bond and deep connection comforted them with the hope of being complete again. The farmer would do anything to let his lover know how their beloved pup returned home, and the only one missing in this tender painting was him. The first time he heard about his childhood friend’s state, his heart missed a beat: He was aware of how Katsumi tried to avoid the details to not break her dam, but the suffering inside the emerald irises was clearer than the moonlight in this endless sky.
The omega welcomed the tears falling down his cheeks, marked by the time. He always loved the form of his freckles, not because it reminded him of his mom but the stupid comment of the best friend he loved more than anything else. If Katsuki was here, he would probably tease about how bags look bad under his pretty eyes, but for the moment, it was the farmer and his broken heart, staring at the ghost of a love that’ll never fade through the decade. A glance at the ring on his finger reminded him how they were each other’s strength: They’d been too far to let such a stupid obstacle as death stop them, but it would be unfair to let their legacy live without the man who sacrificed his life to protect her.
Once he reached the final comma of a tale he knew by heart, he authorized himself to release the unshed tears. Izuku Midoriya couldn’t live without Katsuki Bakugo, and this story was supposed to last until their final breath…but he was unable to put a conclusion to this mess. Don’t get him wrong, he and Katsumi made sure to know where the current conflict was going, breaking their hearts at the revelation that after more than seven years, it was still a reality for the soldiers and their families.
The shaking omega didn’t even notice when he felt gentle arms wrapping around his shoulders, leading him into a consoling embrace. His body moved on its own to rush into the familiar warmth, knowing how his own child would never judge him for being this vulnerable. Katsumi was aware of how the omega could easily pretend, but she hated how he had to handle all this suffering on its own for too long! He was Izuku Bakugo, and the strongest person Katsumi had seen, but she felt heartbroken at the sight under her eyes. The love that both men have for each other is genuine, similar to the fairytale the maids used to read to her as bedtime stories. It was unfair to separate such a unique bond, but something in her chest sensed how they’d come back stronger than ever after this terrible experience.
“I know, I miss him too,” the blonde replied with a low tone, holding the green-haired man closer. Izuku never thought he would be able to hug his daughter, but his body released all the hidden emotions that haunted each of his nights in the past years Hearing his pup sharing the same empathy as him about this cruel fate was relieving, understanding how they were able to avoid a mutual downfall.
“I can’t close my eyes without picturing his face,” the shorter figure confessed, wiping his tears after regaining his breath. His eyes caught how the crimson ones took a glimpse at the letter, recalling the first time he let her read this meaningful note that signed the beginning of their downfall. “We have everything, and it disappeared overnight. I’m more than happy to see how you’ve finally returned home, but I’m constantly worried about Kacchan…I don’t know what I would do if our next meeting will be with a grave.”
“I’m also preoccupied by his state, but I try to remember the things he told me,” Katsmi added with a soft tone. She realized how the teary illusion she’d seen in her dream finally became a reality. “His eyes explained more than any promises he made until now, and I know he’s trying his best somewhere else. Fate is cruel for teaching this lesson under these circumstances, but this doesn’t mean it’s over. I recalled him explaining out loud how he’d return to us even if it took him a decade to escape from his hell. I might not know him as much as you, but we can both agree about how strong he can be in his beliefs.”
Izuku made a slight chuckle and took a glimpse at the taller figure. He couldn’t help but feel how pride invaded his chest at the idea that the newborn he saw at birth became this inspiring figure. After all, he followed her crazy adventures since she was three and became as inspiring as her sire, even if the two only met once. A lifetime wouldn’t be enough to express all the gratitude he had for this blessing, knowing how his husband would agree if he was by their side.
“Look at you, you’ve grown up in a blink of an eye, but you’ve never been this impressive,” pointed out the freckled man, ruffling the blonde messy curls. There was no doubt about how he was amazed by his pup being the carbon copy of his mate: This statement was enough to erase his worries, focusing on the promises he made to himself years ago. “I wouldn’t ask for anyone else to wear your father’s name and our genes, but I still blame myself for letting such a thing happen, and I hope you’ll forgive me.”
“You did nothing wrong, Mom,” she objected with a soft tone, putting her hands on the omega’s shoulders. Emerald eyes met the crimson ones, realizing how the omega had no right to be afraid, not when his pup was looking at him with such admiration. “The only ones to blame are the royal couple, but this is over. I escaped from this terrible life to find happiness by your side three years ago, and I don’t have any regrets. If Dad was here, he would be more than grateful to see how you’ve survived.”
Izuku stayed silent, letting his hesitant fingers play with his wedding ring. Those jewels were the symbol of the endless love they signed in their youth, and they kept them alive the entire time. There was no way this story end with Izuku and their pup…Not when Katsuki was the missing piece of the puzzle! His glance caught the taller figure returning with a smile on her face, and his eyes widened when he caught the puppet in Katsumi’s hands.
“When I was young, you convinced me to honor him with this meaningful name that touched him when he knew about this part of my past. I’ve always considered Kacchan as a form of reassurance and courage, but tonight, I can make an exception and share it with you,” pointed out the blonde with a genuine smile, noticing when the omega was holding back his tears. After all, Izuku was the one who gave an actual meaning to this puppet’s existence and didn’t know his daughter brought it here until now! It was an important way to tell Izuku how his presence have been impactful in her life, especially with the narrative surrounding this toy.
“I thought you refused to be separate from him,” he explained with a surprised tone, holding the delicate puppet in the palm of his hands. This toy wasn’t a simple reminder of his mate’s presence but also a precious memory of the bond he formed with his daughter when they were just imaginary friends.
“I still have a hard time sleeping without it, especially during Dad’s birthday…but I think you need it more than me,” Katsumi affirmed, offering a hug to the green-haired man who returned the gesture. “I understand your fear, but if you feel like drowning in your own thoughts, keep him close to your heart and confess all your fears. It’s a question of time before we, the three of us, again…I know Dad would never give up on us.”
Izuku only replied with a low“I love you” to the person who saved him once again: his precious pup. There wasn’t any day where the omega wasn’t grateful for this chance to catch up on the lost time with his lost daughter, hoping his mate would also have the luck to realize how they deserve to have their happy ending now their common enemy was out of reach.
—--
The war has never been this fearsome than the past 3 years.
If it was for himself, the blond would’ve already given up a long time ago, but his goal kept him alive the entire time. His case wasn’t so different from the shadows standing beside him in the trench, secretly wishing to return to the past life they had left behind. Staying in this intoxicating ambiance made the innocent souls realize how meaningful memory can be once you lose your empire overnight: The strongest survived to see a glimpse of their wife’s smile a last time, while others wanted to give honor to their family’s name.
Each motive differed from the other, but they all shared a common opponent: the royal couple who were probably enjoying their peaceful life on their golden throne. The friendship they created over time could disappear with one second of inattention, understanding how death was ready to welcome anyone in its arms. Much blood and sweat have been wasted, mixed with the desperate call for help at the last moment, but no one heard their request, not even the stars who watched this terrible show from afar.
Katsuki Bakugo was fighting for his life at all costs. He wouldn’t hesitate to gain a few minutes of rest if this meant regaining consciousness. His nap was often a recollection of precious frames of his past, and he tried to search for his daughter’s figure in those lonely walls, but the farmer was welcomed by a heartbreaking silence. If he knew it was the last time they’d see each other, the blond wouldn’t have hesitated to explain how much he loved her and wanted to return in his mate’s arms once and for all. Yet, he decided to keep the unsend letters and many apologies for the right time…sensing how his family was waiting for him on his isolated farm.
The crimson eyes took a glimpse at the familiar figure standing beside him: The teenager he once welcomed in his embrace reached his majority a few months ago, being officially a man in society’s eyes. Katsuki refused to consider him with such a title, not when he remained a child who saw his youth being taken away from him against his will. Many soldiers were touched to see how the small protégé felt safe near the blond’s presence, almost like they genuinely cared about each other: Katsuki’s father's instinct often showed itself under the form of affection, the one he usually reserved for his husband and daughter, remembering how this brat has no one waiting for him at home.
The hesitant teenager who didn’t know how to hold a weapon became a traumatized shadow in the trench, unconsciously repeating this gesture as a way to protect himself from a potential attack. None could blame him for using this coping mechanism after the horror he’d seen at a young age, saying goodbye to some of his friends in the most heartbreaking way. However, Kenzo became attached to Katsuki’s presence, almost like he found a paternal figure he never had in his past life. The blond was treating him like the daughter who grew up without him, projecting each of Katsumi’s expressions into his, giving him a reason to hold a little longer to this endless fight.
The past years have been more tolerable, even if their chest were filled with fear of leaving this world without a final goodbye. Katsuki watched the teenager growing up and keeping the promise that kept him alive for a long. Without realizing it, the blond unexpectedly saved the teenager’s life by giving him an actual purpose in this situation. Kenzo will be forever grateful for this hope this stranger offered him, secretly praying to the stars to let this father see his family, who occupied each of his thoughts.
“What’s going on, kiddo ?” The taller figure asked with a concerned tone. Under this angle, he was easily able to read through each of his expressions, offering him a small victory.
“Nothing,” Kenzo muttered, resting his head against the tissue that was used as a pillow for most of his nights. “It’s just….I heard about a potential agreement happening between the two sides. It’s the first time we have news from the outside, but a part of me secretly hopes they’ll make peace…Enough lives were sacrificed, we should get the freedom we deserve.”
“If I didn’t know you, I would think you were in your forties and realized what existential crises are,” the blond teased, ruffling the messy hair. Kenzo rolled his eyes in reply but caught how the crimson eyes softened once the older man regained his consciousness about the situation. This information was not something to be taken lightly, offering a potential hope for their next adventures outside those trenches that showed the darkest side of humanity. “You have a good heart, kiddo; don’t let this war take it away from you. You remind me of my husband in many, especially how he was too pure to face the cruelty of this world, but that’s why I admire him: How he remained the same man who caught my heart when we were just kids.”
“You must really love him,” Kenzo pointed out with a slight smile on the corner of his lips. It wasn’t the first time he heard about how Katsuki Bakugo was in love with his husband: This tale was touching enough to be recited as a bedtime story, transforming a lonely night usually filled with tears into touching emotions rising in their chest. His black irises noticed when the blond stared at the wedding ring on his fingers, which aged like wine, and the ethereal vows they made on the altar.
“More than anything,” he confessed without realizing how the words escaped from his mouth in the blink of an eye. The taller figure recalled the chubby face that welcomed his darkest days, transforming each of his flaws into marks of courage, offering endless tenderness. However, he knew he could trust Katsumi and her presence in the nerd’s life to bring color back to his beautiful face…the same breathless painting that haunt each of his nights. “If I knew what I know now, I would’ve never acted that way, but we were young and blinded by our broken hearts. Being selfish isn’t a crime when this world already considers you a monster due to false rumors, still, my biggest regret is to haven’t taken time to mesmerize his face after whispering how beautiful he looked, thinking it was a timeless tale.”
“I don’t know anything about him, but you’ve portrayed your mate as the most caring and devoted partner. It’s evidence for me to think about how he would’ve accepted your choice; you had your reasons, and it’s understandable to feel guilt about a decision made against our will,” affirmed the shorter figure. It was touching to see how this older man remained a broken soul who saw his empire falling due to misfortune.
“Tch, you know…You two share pretty similar personalities, you could’ve been friends knowing the nerd’s heart is too big for the selfishness of this world,” the blond replied with a grin. It was reassuring to see how the teenager he took under his protection years ago became mature enough to notice how being vulnerable wasn’t a sign of weakness but their biggest strength. This war caused their loss of humanity after each death and innocent lives taken away on the rival’s side…but some of them survived by remembering how vulnerability was something to cherish.
That night, Katsuki Bakugo decided to share a few anecdotes about his past life under the amazed eyes of the shorter man to fill their loneliness. This brat was someone able to go further in his life if fate was in his favor, hoping the stars listened to the blond’s prayers concerning Kenzo’s safety. After all, they both made a promise to stay alive and escape from this hell together….
—---
The news had just fallen, catching the two farmers unprepared.
It happened during a summer day, once the sunlight rose enough to highlight their figures in the public market. The village was used to seeing the genuine smile return to the green-haired man’s lips, especially when he was often seen with the heartening presence of his daughter by his side. The two of them have been inseparable since their touching reunion, catching the lost time that offers some unhealed scars.
Today, Izuku and Katsumi continued to sell their products to familiar faces who welcomed them with a radiant smile. The blonde had never been this happy since Izuku taught her all the things she needed to know to adapt to this completely different lifestyle, enjoying how each second matters. After all, they’d been separated for too long, and it was touching to see this blessed soul growing up and wearing her parent's legacy with pride.
“Every single day that passed, she started to gain more personality traits from her father,” a voice resonated in the background, catching their attention.
It wasn’t surprising to find people whispering about how their family seemed happier, often highlighting how the blond would be glad to see so much change, almost like Izuku and Katsuki’s journey became an unforgettable tale of this town. This time, the murmurs were kinder than the suffocating gossip the green-haired man used to live in his hometown: It was reliving to see how humanity wasn’t summarized with vultures, knowing some innocent souls could also change the narrative. The two farmers liked how their bond created a natural dynamic between them, almost like they’d lived with each other for years.
“It’s a blessing to see how a part of my husband is still alive every time our eyes meet, even if time isn’t in our favor,” the freckled man decreed with a smile, ruffling the messy blonde curls. “I wonder if the stars heard my desperate attempts to keep his memory alive.”
Katsumi observed the interaction in silence, noticing how the stranger’s glance seemed different than usual. After all, it was true that the village had been acting weird that morning, and murmurs were spread to the most curious ears. The blonde would naturally ask them what was happening to create such emotions in this lonely village, but she decided it was none of her business, not when she had bigger fish to fry.
“That’s impressive how each story can transform love in a different way, but yours is probably the most inspiring tale I’ve heard until now. I know a bunch of people who’ve already given up, but I’m pretty sure the wait is worth the fight,” the woman pointed out with a gentle tone. Her eyes caught the curious gaze crossing the farmer's daughter’s face, who seemed smarter to understand how the ambiance was different, even if she didn’t express herself about the topic. The woman knew it was none of her business, but it was the least she could do to inform the family about the news that changed thousands of lives, including theirs. Her figure moved closer to the wooden table, looking at the figures who waited for the outcome of this conversation.“Did you hear the news ?”
“Well…It caught my eye that people were acting strange, but I’m not the kind of person to dig into the gossip, I already faced the consequences years ago. I’m just surprised most of the nosy glances stare at us like circus freaks,” hinted the omega with a teasing tone, considering this as another echo of his childhood memories with his husband about getting syphilis. Those memories were hidden for a reason, but the serious expression on the woman’s face seemed to let him know how important this was.
One glance at his daughter’s face was enough to sense how they were both on the same page, misunderstanding the current situation. After all, rumors back and forth every day, and it was another one mixed with the millions already spread over the decades, so why should they be implied in such a thing in the first place? The stranger thanked the two farmers after receiving the bags of fresh products, realizing how unfair it was to let them discover this new once it was too late. Izuku and Katsumi Bakugo were known to be a strong believer in second chances, especially when it concerned their family, but tonight signed the beginning of a revival, something they’ve been chasing after so many desperate tears.
“I shouldn’t be the one announcing it, but…” she murmured, noticing how the farmer’s eyes were interested in the upcoming reveal, without knowing how they weren’t ready to hear the good news that came out straight from a fever dream. “The Eldoria kingdom recently made peace with their opponents after ten years of conflict.”
This name sounded familiar to Izuku’s ears, but he was unable to tell why it remained so impactful to his vulnerable soul. The explanation resided at the tip of his lips, searching for an echo in his deeper memories, but his thoughts were interrupted by the sudden gasp beside him. Emerald Irises let the crimson ones, immediately acknowledging the stunned expression on his daughter’s face. Usually, his inner omega would’ve freaked out at this sight, but the tears falling down her cheeks tried to give a message to the shorter man, who tried to connect the dots. Katsumi’s fingers were trembling, meeting the fabric of her dress, a gesture the blonde would do when she was overwhelmed by her emotions. The omega knew his daughter better than anyone else, especially in the last three years, but one glance was enough to read the thousands of questions crossing her mind, causing the farmer to slowly understand the meaning behind the stranger’s words.
The news appeared like a slap in his face, forcing him to hold his breath. He wished he was able to name the thousands of sentiments rising inside his chest at the moment, but the revelation seemed too good to be true: Their imagination must play a trick against us, mixing the desperation that accumulated itself with their emptiness for so many years, without even considering their potential reaction once the new had fallen. Izuku recalled the moment when his daughter explained each detail about his husband’s state, unconsciously leading them to find his location. However, it didn’t seem to act like an electric shock when he heard this town’s name…remembering how it was the one where his husband was actually residing!
“Wait…does this mean-”
“From what we know, they released all the soldiers a few days ago. Most of them are in a bad state, but a majority returned home, staying at the infirmary while their families arrived,” the woman finished with a reassuring tone, noticing how the freckled man was holding back his tears. The freckled man was well known for being emotive around this topic, but his reaction was genuinely heartwarming, acting like a child who received the Christmas gift he always wanted.“Maybe you should check if he’s still there, after all, your family deserves this peace, don’t you think ?”
Izuku didn’t know when he started crying, but he welcomed the tears that fell down his cheeks. He wasn’t aware of his ability to hold his breath for so long, but the idea that this hell was finally over brought him delight. The farmer stopped counting the number of nights where he prayed for his mate's safety, and this reality came true in the blink of an eye! The man he lived and chased after so long was finally released from this traumatic experience, probably waiting for his family somewhere else in this world.
Nothing was confirmed, but the only way to have answers to his unsolved questions was to see his childhood friend’s state by himself. He used to think about a time when it was him against the rest of the world, but his life took a different turn when his precious daughter joined him on this journey. Talking about her, Katsumi remained emotional, processing the news and precious frames she kept replaying since her last meeting with her father. Many emotions crossed her chest, wondering if she should be scared or excited about the news, but one look at the emerald irises and her worries faded away. The shorter man welcomed her in a gentle hug, whispering how this was over, and they finally broke the curse on their family’s name.
The truth was standing in their eyes as a universal truth: Katsuki Bakugo was alive and needed their help. There was no doubt the two of them would be ready to travel across the world to see this illusion they had chased for so long by themselves.
——-
Izuku and Katsumi didn’t hesitate twice before preparing their bags once they returned home. All those years of emotional turmoil and wasted tears were blurry memories compared to the sudden hope rising in their chest!
If Katsumi was easily determined to travel and see the man who haunted her dream since her youth, things were different for the freckled man. The idea of even preparing his stuff and seeing his husband was unrealistic to his broken heart, who never thought this day would come. The voices in his head told him a million times how he’d only face a grave and drown himself in his regrets, but this terrible ending was about to change soon. His fingers held the fabric of the shirt that was still comforting his night, even if the alpha’s scenes faded away through the years. The freckled man recalled the moment when his life fell apart in this same room, realizing how he had the right to experience bliss.
Tears fell on his cheeks, holding the shirt closer to his heart. He was aware of how this would probably do nothing to change the stress inside his chest, wondering if his husband would be in a good state during their reunion. The idea of seeing the man he lived with after 19 endless years made him realize how much he missed his husband more than anything. This bond they formed since their childhood ended up being stronger than death, even if time offered them enough pain in this narrative.
Izuku couldn’t help but smile, and one glance at Katsumi’s gentle expression on her face was enough to be reassured. He wasn’t alone and will never be, but when his amazing pup and mate were standing by his side and held a piece of his soul. The farmer found himself acting like a teenager eager to experience the discoveries of the world, remembering how it used to be his dream back in the day.
Years ago, Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo left their hometown to experience new adventures. Their clueless spirits blindly trusted the unknown, leading them to face the worst of crime but the happiest experience of their lives. Today, the story repeats itself with new characters, ready to feel the same sensation the omega felt during his first trip. This impression of déjà vu melted the freckled man’s heart, who decided to stare at the tender crimson eyes.
None dared to break this silence, but they understood how this memory they forged was important to them. Izuku and Katsumi created a strong bond where one glance was enough to read into each other’s eyes. The green-haired man couldn’t help but look at his daughter with pride, noticing how the blonde was holding back her tears. They deserve this happy ending they’ve been writing for too long…and couldn’t wait to see Katsuki again.
When the early morning colored the midnight sky, their two figures were seen closing the door of this house that owned so many untold secrets. With a genuine smile on their face and the letter being delicately laid inside the bags, the two shadows decided to take this new step of their adventure together. It was touching to see how the roles were reversed: the sensitive soul that used to be Izuku in his youth became the supportive presence of his daughter, who stared at the landscapes with shining eyes. The farmer was sure his husband would melt at this sight, especially when the blond used to be the overprotective one during the omega’s pregnancy.
None in the village questioned why the two farmers left their dearest lands, realizing how this fight was finally over. The freckled man lost himself in his mumbling, explaining each of his knowledge for the areas he’d seen years ago during their first visit. Katsumi was impressed by all the tender stories shared by her dam, being happier than ever to finally have someone by her side for a meaningful moment like this one. Don’t get her wrong, she was excited to see her father, but the genuine enjoyment rising her dam’s cheeks was making her realize how he needed this reunion more than her. After all, the omega was the one who held his pain for so long, and the simple fact that this war was over brought him back the hope he lost a long time ago.
Katsumi understood how her parents shared a genuine love and sensed how the two men would probably need time for themselves to realize what was happening. With a nod, she listened to the numerous stories of the omega, passionate in his speech as their shadows lost themselves in the multiple landscapes that crossed their eyes.
——
It took three days before it finally reached Eldoria.
The farmers’s eyes finally arrived in the unknown lands that owned so much blood and innocent lives. It was the first time they’d been delighted by the discovery of this kingdom! At first sight, it looked like those lands were similar to their village: each house was built decades ago with the same material owned by their ancestors, except the empty streets were now filled with constant background noises. Many curious glances stared at the farmers invading their peaceful lives, who seemed lost enough to have many questions residing at the tip of their lips.
Emerald eyes met the crimson ones and moved to the closest person who could potentially help them get the answers they wanted. Izuku was the one to start the conversation under the dazed expression on the inhabitant’s face. It wasn’t new to see a bunch of strangers entering their lands after the good news, but it was always touching to see the light rising inside their eyes at the idea of being close to their loved ones.
“You must’ve made a long trip to reach this place, but you’re close enough to the truth,” the pointed-out explained with a soft tone, noticing how the two farmers definitely looked alike, wondering if they were family members of this blond soldier everyone talked about. “Your final destination is a few miles away from here: Once you face the giant tree, you need to take the road to your left, and you’ll see a bunch of tents and people standing in a corner.”
“Thank you so much!” the green-haired man replied, offering a few pennies as a gesture of gratitude. The stranger was surprised but simply nodded, observing how the two shadows mixed with the crowd.
Each footstep echoed like a heavy breath, realizing how they were closer to the truth. After all, this war took away so many lives and heartbreaking was the moment once the terrible news fell into their last hope. Izuku and Katsumi should be worried about hearing bad news, but the two farmers were able to sense how their instincts were right: Katsuki Bakugo was the strongest man they’d ever seen, and he would always keep a promise.
Once the tree reached their attention, the two figures stopped. Izuku held his breath and stared at the ring on his fingers, unconsciously praying to the stars to see the man he loved in a good state. Katsumi noticed how the scarred hands were shaking and decided to reassure her dam by offering him a slight smile. Don’t get her wrong, the blonde was stressed to see what was hiding in those tents and her father’s state, but she knew it was the right thing to do. After all, they’ve been walking for too long to return home with their regrets….especially when Katsuki Bakugo saved their lives.
“Let’s do this,” the shorter figure mumbled to himself with a deep breath. He sensed how his mating mark was heating up due to the sunlight as he was walking closer to the place owned by some people who agreed to volunteer.
“He’s waiting for us,” added Katsumi.
They could both feel how their heavy breath mixed with the background noises from the loud conversations and emotional reunions. In this place, they were simple shadows who shared the same story as the strangers, but those emotions rising inside their chests made this quest more intense. Crimson eyes caught the lost figures who left the tens with tears falling down their cheeks while others offered genuine smiles, wondering if they’d be able to share the same narrative.
Izuku didn’t know he was holding his breath until he heard Katsumi’s voice take the lead, making the conversation with the older woman. The previous excitement he felt during his road started to mix with his inner voices telling him how it was too late to even think about seeing his husband’s smile again. His emerald irises started to express concern, and he jumped once he felt his daughter’s hand against his shaking shoulders.
“He’s in the left tent,” the woman added with a soft tone, noticing how her dam was holding back his tears. She wouldn’t blame the omega for being emotional, especially with the unique form of love Katsuki and him have after all those years. Izuku stayed silent, wondering if he should stay here to support his daughter in this quest, but Katsumi made a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll join you soon. I think you two deserve to have this moment, right ?”
The shorter man replied with a low “thanks”, offering a tender hug to the pup who had become an amazing person. The tiny girl who begged for help in this imaginary world ended up being mature enough to put her dam’s feelings first, making sure he was cheered up. This simple statement made the omega realize how proud he was of his daughter and unconsciously knew how Katsuki would agree with him: Katsumi Bakugo was their biggest pride and the blessing their exhausted souls always needed to heal.
The blonde made a light chuckle, observing her dam reaching the emplacements where all their worries would either be resolved or intensified in the worst way possible. Izuku was an inspirational figure, someone Katsumi had admired since her childhood, and seeing him face this situation by himself was another proof of his strength. A simple glance on her face was enough to convince the volunteer that the bond this family shared was inspiring for the next step of their lives.
There was no doubt they all cared for each other in the most unique way, hoping they’d find peace….
—---
The distance between those two opposite words left the freckled man breathless.
He was aware of how his daughter gave him space to deal with this situation, but his body refused to move. Opening the curtain would be a good start, but this wouldn’t stop the fast heartbeat inside the farmer’s chest, wondering if he was strong enough to face the reality awaiting him behind this isolated area. Izuku knew that his husband would probably act the same way if the roles were reversed, but compared to his mate, the freckled man was easily afraid of facing a dead body. His fingers ruffled the delicate fabric of the tent and decided to take a deep breath, taking this important step for his younger self, who begged each night for his childhood friend’s protection.
His footsteps resonated in the lonely tent, equipped enough to welcome each family and their loved one to offer some intimacy during an emotional reunion. It was a complicated organization, but the result was worth the wait if this meant letting the drained souls enjoy the precious reunion with their loved ones. However, his eyes glanced around the small area, noticing how a nurse had checked on the blond a few minutes before with a paper explaining his current state. The handwriting informed how he was still unconscious and needed a few days to rest, which seemed too long for his soul, which had already missed those stunning crimson eyes.
Yet, his heart missed a beat when his irises caught the sleeping figure in the hospital bed.
Izuku didn’t even know he was able to feel so many emotions at once at this heartbreaking sight. His body moved on its own to immediately rush into the familiar figure that had occupied each of his nights since his departure. Shaking fingers crossed the fragile skin marked by the brushes, he let his hands cup the blond’s cheeks. Izuku prepared himself for many scenarios of different kinds, including the surprise to see his husband return to his doorstep overnight…but none of this crossed his mind. Under this angle, the sleeping figure seemed so peaceful, reminding the old morning when the couple used to admire this breathtaking painting under their eyes, thinking they would have a lifetime to cherish it.
It would be unfair to wake up the blond from his dream, but Izuku’s selfishness begged him to give him a sign, anything able to calm the voices in his head. His forehead met Katsuki’s in gentle movement, afraid to bother this work of art that was the farmer’s existence. He welcomed the tears rolling down his cheeks, holding the strong and calloused hand closer, with the hope of seeing them move. The least Izuku could do was to let his mate know how he was standing by his side, even if they were separated by a near-death experience!
“We promised,” the freckled man whispered with a shaking tone, holding tighter into the cold hands.
He used to feel their warmth, filled with promises about facing a happy ending that was taken away from them in the most cruel way. His mind recalled the tone of his husband’s voice, the way his lips would make a slight grin, and shutting his childhood friend down with a quick kiss. Don’t get him wrong, Izuku was more than happy to see how Katsuki Bakugo was still alive and breathing the same air as them, but seeing him being so distant and close at the same time offered a bittersweet impression to his chest.
“You used to consider each morning by my side as a blessing from the gods listening to your desperate calls…but you decided to change the rules and leave me on my own. I should hate you for leaving without a goodbye, but I wished you would’ve seen the way Katsumi talked about you and how we keep your name alive even if you’re out of reach,” the farmer confessed, resting his head closer to the blond’s chest, trying to comfort himself with the slow heartbeat that echoed like a melody to his ears. If only he was able to hear an answer from the man he loved, knowing if holding on for so long was worth the wait….
“We gave birth to an amazing and inspiring daughter, and I know you’ll be proud of her if you saw how much she grew up since your last meeting,” he pointed out with a smile, grabbing his mate’s delicate wrist and noticed how new scars were residing here. Izuku used to recite the stories of each with blind eyes, but the idea of imagining the man he loved suffering in silence broke his heart. “I’ve been calling your name for an entire decade, even if it was only a few years to the cruel rules of fate. I couldn’t imagine a world without the man I love, and yet, I have the impression of facing a ghost, even if your breathing is real. Everything about this scene under my eyes is real but felt wrong to my shattered soul…”
His lips met the blond’s knuckles and intertwined their fingers together, feeling how their wedding rings met in a few seconds. It was the last thing that kept the blond alive for so many years and the ultimate proof of their mutual and endless affection. Izuku Midoriya fell in love with Katsuki a thousand times but underestimated how strong those feelings could be, especially when the missing part of your soul was unable to move under your desperate call for help. The farmer has so many things to confess and apologize, but he’s never been this vulnerable until now: he barely fought against his shaking hands, finding reassurance in the soft breath escaping from the sleeping figure. Katsuki Bakugo used to be this unreachable shadow, which gave him complete attention…but Izuku had the impression of talking to a ghost at that moment.
“I miss you, Kacchan,” the green-haired man whispered, letting his fingers play with the golden spiky hair. If his mate was awake, he would probably blush at the gesture and change the topic: “Every time I take a glance at Katsumi, I have the impression of seeing your face again and feeling you in the house. Our daughter became the copycat of the one who gave her a chance to create her own journey, and I’m so proud of you for standing for your family’s rights, but it’s unfair to me. My only wish is to hear your voice and see your breathtaking irises again, feel your broken fingers against my skin and your lips calling a name that belongs to you.”
Izuku was aware of how this speech wouldn’t be enough to bring him back to his husband, but it was worth the try. After all, he was glad to see how the man he loved was returning from this hell that gave them deep scars, but he was selfish when it came to his family. Now he knew his lover was there, he refused to leave this bed and made sure to be the first to face the silly groan of pain after a long nap.
“I know you did your best, but it’s time to go home, love,” the shorter figure confessed with a smile, letting his tears meet the delicate cheeks. His lips marked their territory in the blond’s forehead while scarred hands held his like his life was on the line. Indeed, the freckled man didn’t even notice when his daughter joined the conversation, turning his head and meeting the touched crimson eyes.
“He’ll be fine,” Katsumi added with a sad tone, taking a glimpse at the unconscious figure. It was strange to see this familiar face again, but the distance between them was hard to see. The taller man who used to take her into his arms and confessed his apologies was now standing under her eyes with a pale face, looking like a ghost haunting this space. The woman tried to reassure herself and secretly hoped her world would be true soon, but for the moment, she needed to stay strong. “You made the hardest part, but this is not enough, and I agree with Mom. All these blood and curses that occupied your life in the last 10 years are over: You have the right to see your happy ending, but you need to wake up first, Dad.”
Izuku and Katsumi couldn’t believe how they had never been this close to the reassuring ending they had begged for so long, but the only one missing in this journey was the alpha. The two figures stayed in the tent the entire time, even when the nurses checked on the sleeping figure and noticed how the scarred fingers held the calloused one like his life was on the line.
The story has known many twists since the beginning, but it was time to complete this final book.
—---
The background noises were loud enough to distract him from the fight happening under his eyes.
This battle have never been this intense since the last days and conversation with Kenzo, who brought him the comfort the blond needed to stand up in this final mission. His instincts could sense how this hell was about to end soon but decided to keep up a little longer, even if his nights were shortened and the rival more determined to conclude this chapter with a victory. The numerous soldiers faded away like their ghosts haunting this place with their regrets and unhealed scars, reminding the last survivors how their lives could also be the next ones. This suffocating atmosphere drowns them in complete stress, being unable to close their eyes without considering the option of a surprise attack, but thankfully, they succeed in surviving until the last fight.
The weapons and lifeless bodies were remaining on the floor while the last sweat falling down their forehead met their heated palm. Their heartbeats fastened at the silence, staring at each other and waiting for the result of this meeting that would either sign their downfall or revival. Each breath felt wrong under the dark glances escaping from the open side, who opened the letter, freshly arrived from the world outside those walls of sacrifices and wasted tears. None dared to speak, afraid to make a wrong move, and simply stared at the general who took the letter away from the envelope, reading the text out loud.
At this moment, a bunch of emotions started to fill the blond’s chest. It was probably the second time he had been this afraid of the outcome of this conversation, especially after having an impression of deja vu. The night that separated him from his family occupied each of his dreams, calling for unreachable names under the understanding gaze of Kenzo. This brat was a good person, and Katsuki wished him the best once this hell was over, knowing how he would be able to create this bright future offering itself at the palm of his young hands.
“After careful deliberation from both sides and a consolidated list of the considerable damages made on both sides, the king of Bellora and Eldoria agreed to put an end to this fight that lasted for decades. The two opposite camps would face the damaging loss of their numerous soldiers who saved their lands with pride until the last tears, making the promise to honor the innocents who saw their lives being taken away by the darkest side of humidity,” the loud voice resonated in the silence, sensing how each of his words mattered. “From now on, each soldier remaining alive at the reading of this public announcement will have the reward to return home and have the best care of the town. The king and queen of Eldoria thank all their brave participants with their blessing for a better life.”
The wind spread the news faster than Katsuki’s hometown with this shitty rumor that ruined his childhood friend’s life, offering a novelty for this landscape where the most atrocious crimes have been committed. Yet, none refused to believe it was a reality, even when the paper was publicly exposed to the most curious eyes. This scene seemed too good to be true, especially for the soldiers who’ve fallen into this mess due to the royal couple’s selfishness: It was easy to be the good guys once thousands, even millions of people, died to please their ego. This supposed blessing for a better life was nothing but bullshit, and everyone knew that, but this will never resolve the scars and horror those innocents have seen in the past ten years.
Yet, the only thing crossing his mind at the moment was the idea that maybe it wasn’t a shitty joke but something serious. After all, they were humans and deserved to return home with their loved ones…
“Does this mean we’re finally free ?” Kenzo’s voice broke the silence, catching all the glances on his shaking figure. His hands were holding the weapon tighter against his chest, reflecting the way he survived until now, transforming him into a robot instead of a human. He hated being the center of attention, but his eyes met the crimson ones, knowing the blond was the only one he could trust in this crazy situation. At this moment, everyone waited for an answer, but Katsuki’s face softened, revealing his emotions in public for the first time since he reached this place.
“It’s over,” he admitted out loud, knowing how his words would sign the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Everyone’s eyes widened before releasing a loud sigh, signing the official end of this war that lasted way too long for their good sake. If the other soldiers didn’t hesitate to hide their enjoyment, Kenzo didn’t think twice before rushing into the taller man’s chest, offering him the first hug of this new beginning. Katsuki couldn’t help but smile at the gesture, returning the hug and welcoming the tears falling down his cheeks. “We did it, kiddo.”
“We did it,” repeated the shorter figure, almost like he couldn’t believe it was true. Indeed, he never considered himself able to survive this war this long, but he knew he’d never forget the farmer who made this journey easier. If Kenzo didn’t have anyone waiting for him at home, he could see the joy rising in the crimson eyes at the idea of finally seeing his husband and daughter again. This time, it wasn’t a desperate illusion but their new tomorrow, the one where each tormented soul would be finally released from their nightmares.
“I’m so proud of you, kiddo,” the blond exclaimed, ruffling the messy curls. “You did a great job.”
He couldn’t help but feel the shorter figure returning the hug and finding comfort in his warmth, letting the farmer realize how he was nothing more but a father who’d been surviving without the missing pieces of his life. Katsuki couldn’t wait to see the bright smile on his daughter’s face and the teary eyes of his mate, knowing he’d feel at home the moment he stood by their side.
Something caught his attention when the previous grab started to shake. Katsuki, as the protective figure he was, decided to check on him….and his eyes widened. He noticed the blood on his clothes, something that wasn’t there at this spot a few minutes ago, and how it wasn’t coming from him but Kenzo. His heart missed a beat at the realization that one of his unhealed injuries opened again with the previous movements, letting the young man suffer in silence. Many thoughts crossed the blond’s mind, and he recalled the promise he had made to this teenager, ready to build a bright future. Katsuki Bakugo was a man of words and refused to let someone as important as this brat die when this hell reached final commas.
“Oi, listen to me,” the taller man whispered, holding the shaking figure closer to his chest. He refused to let such a thing happen, especially when he became attached to Kenzo. His heart shattered at the slight breath escaping from the young man’s lips, realizing how the other was trying to hold back his energy, saving his last words for later. “Do you remember the first time we met and you were shitting in your pants because you discovered the cruelty of this world? You couldn’t finish a sentence without tearing up, but you gave me your trust and succeeded in being an amazing person.”
A few worried glances noticed the two figures from afar, shouting how they needed help. Katsuki ignored the background noises, making sure to stay by Kenzo’s side until he ended, experiencing the first heartbreak since he reached this place. His crimson irises noticed how the black-haired man wanted to reply, but the farmer decided to let him rest a little longer in this warmth, ignoring the blood ruining his clothes.
“I know you haven’t made any promise about the rest of the story, but this doesn’t mean you have to give up when the universe offers itself at the palm of your hands,” explained the blond with a shaking tone. He couldn’t help but tear up at the realization that it was a question of minutes before saying goodbye to the teenager who was supposed to do great things. “You’ve told me how you wanted to be remembered as someone who tried. You have no idea how you proved yourself in the past years and made me realize how strong you were, but this story isn’t supposed to end here.”
“I”m sorry,” the shaking figure whispered with a sob, holding tighter into the farmer’s chest. He knew it was stupid to consider a stranger as his “home”, but it was the only way to find peace in this constant pain. Kenzo should’ve known better how this eventually would happen, but he despised this pain rising inside his chest, realizing how he’d be another name beyond the thousands of innocents who died in this tragedy.
“You did your best and made a great path until now. You can be proud of yourself for overstepping your boundaries, you showed me how trusting you was the best decision I’ve made since this shitty war,” Katsuki knew he wasn’t the best to put a name on his feelings, but he decided to let the brat know how he wasn’t a bother but an impressive figure that crossed the farmer’s path. “You’ll be remembered in the best way possible, and your stories will be shared with the most curious souls. You can rest in peace, you did an amazing job at being this unforgettable figure in history, kiddo.”
“Thanks for being my side, even in my last breath,” Kenzo mumbled with his small breath, holding the fabric of the other’s clothes. He refused to die once this hell was over, but he decided he already fought enough…especially when he noticed how the blond was holding back his tears. He found himself holding tighter into the farmer’s warmth, wishing the afterlife would’ve felt this comfortable. “Make sure to find your family and let them know how much you care about them…They deserve to know how devoted you are.”
Katsuki and Kenzo became aware of how they were running out of time, but those last words led the blond into a breakdown. None dared to speak, enjoying those last moments, even if the background noises returned stronger to their sensitive ears. It was too late when the nurse rushed into the lifeless body of the young man, realizing how he spent his last minutes being welcomed by the reassuring presence of the blond than fear, compared to the other soldiers. Katsuki refused to reply to any of the questions coming from the extras’ lips, deciding to take a final glance at the teenager who decided to spend his last minutes with a nobody like him.
Tears fell down his cheeks, and his heart missed a beat when he caught the unconscious body being taken away. His lips opened, unable to release any sound despite the urge to scream, while his eyes followed the familiar shadow leaving him. His fingers held the fabric of his shirt tighter, being unable to forget the terrifying sight: Katsuki knew it was all in his head, but he was haunted by the sight of seeing Kenzo’s lifeless body being replaced by Katsumi’s, with the injuries that caused him his death. One glance at his hand, and he noticed the marks, losing himself at the idea of having his daughter’s blood at the palm of his hand without being able to say a last goodbye.
Many people tried to calm him during his panic attack, but the taller man was stuck in his own fear, drowning him in the idea that Katsumi was dead. Maybe projecting his own personal insecurities into a vulnerable soul like Kenzo was a bad idea, especially if the consequences would be more impactful than he expected. Katsuki didn’t know he was able to hold his breath for so long, feeling his body melting at the overwhelming voices inside his head, telling him how he was the reason for his daughter’s death. His lips kept mumbling a low “I’m sorry”, recalling the meeting he shared with the 15-year-old teenager who welcomed him in his dream and the moment when he decided to cherish this newborn inside his husband’s arms.
Before realizing it, he closed his eyes and welcomed the darkness, whispering endless apologies. He was supposed to be the savior but ended up turning into the monster, ready to die with his regrets and make his lover despise him for breaking the only promise that mattered to them.
—----
A slight groan escaped from his lips, realizing how the bright sunlight nearly blinded him.
He didn’t expect the afterlife to be similar to a shitty tent with an illusion of safety, but he decided to trust his instincts. After all, the great Katsuki Bakugo died in the battle after saying a final goodbye to his dream, hating himself for never reading out loud those thousands of unsent letters destined for his husband. He wished he had enough time to take a second chance and erase his mistakes….
The background noises reached his ears as the taller figure slowly regained his breath, feeling his sore body. Maybe it was the effect of the afterlife, explaining why tears fell down his cheeks at the realization that he messed up. His heart arched at the idea of letting his lover face a cold grave until his last breath. He was a man of words and ended up messing up his promises! He would naturally understand if his mate loathed him for leaving behind this previous past and promises that used to reassure them.
He didn’t realize his vision was blurry until someone wiped away those tears running down his fragile skin. The blond didn’t want to see the ghost of his lover but melted at the warmth of the touch and the hesitant movements. His heart begged him to raise his head and take a glance at the familiar ghost, but his reason ordered him to stay safe in his disillusion. Gentle fingers cupped the delicate skin, a gesture that only his childhood friend was able to offer in their most intimate and vulnerable moments.
His heart missed a beat when he noticed the familiar teary eyes looking at him with awe. It was the same expression Izuku shared the first time they kissed and the gentle expression that colored his face during their wedding on the altar. As much as he wanted to convince himself he was in the afterlife, he sensed how the emerald irises shared too many apologies with one single glance.
“Kacchan,” Izuku’s voice softened, accepting the heavy tears falling down his freckled cheek.
He couldn’t believe the moment he waited the most for 19 years happened in the blink of an eye. He stopped counting the numerous illusions of his heartwarming reunion with his husband, but it was nothing compared to the overwhelming relief exploding inside his chest. His shaking hands made sure to hold the other closer to his chest, letting the taller figure know how this was real. If Izuku kept tearing up at the breathtaking sight under his eyes, realizing how his lover finally returned home, Katsuki decided to trust his instincts.
“Izuku,” It was strange to call this name after so many years of silenced answers, but the wide expression on the nerd’s face brought him back to reality.
That’s when Katsuki Bakugo started to understand how he was alive and safe alongside the man he loved. An overwhelming joy filled his chest, leading him to see the genuine smile crossing the omega’s face before taking the shaking figure into his arms. This time, none of them refused to stay away from this heartwarming moment, accepting the tears on their skin and sobs resonating in the room. Scarred hands held the blond’s shoulders tighter, as if his life was on the line, while Katsuki rested his head against his mate’s chest. Listening to Izuku’s heartbeat became his favorite melody, especially when the delicate tone in the farmer’s voice gave enough hints about how he desperately waited for this moment.
“Kacchan,” Izuku knew his husband was holding him tighter, reminding him of the older days when the two of them were facing a nightmare. It used to be the freckled man listening to the content and offering him his support with a forehead kiss, but the roles were reversed in their current circumstances. Shit, the omega has so many things to ask and confession to share, but the only sound escaping his lips was his sobs. He refused to believe it was one of those crazy dreams where he would wake up soon and face his loneliness away from his husband.
“It’s okay, I’m here,” confessed the blond between two breaths, letting his fingers cup the chubby cheeks and admire the beauty of his mate. He couldn’t believe how the past years had damaged his childhood friend’s beauty, making him fall in love again with the caring expression shared by his shining irises. His fingers ruffled the brushed skin, marked by the rough emotions, wiping away the last tears. The green-haired man melted at the touch, moving his head closer to the source of comfort he had been chasing for so long. “I won’t leave, not now that I've returned home, freckles.”
“I thought I lost you,” whispered the shorter man with a shaking tone, letting his fingers intertwine gently with the calloused ones. His lips met the ring on his husband’s finger, reminding him how this beauty was also a part of the endless devotion they shared for each other. “I don’t know what I would do without you. The only thing I know is how you left me with a letter that I ended up learning by heart to recall your presence in my life….but you look exactly the same and as prettier as the day when I lost you.”
Katsuki didn’t know he was crying until the scarred fingers whipped away his mate’s tears, letting his lips meet his forehead. The taller man who faced the darkest side of humanity ended up breaking his shield and finding reassurance in his husband’s tender eyes. He couldn’t believe he was ready to accept death when the love of his life was waiting for him from afar, with those unsolved questions residing at the tip of his lips.
“I should say the same, did I tell you how much I adore your stupid freckles, love ?” The golden-haired man affirmed with a teasing tone, noticing how the omega blushed at the compliment. The farmer smiled and decided to reply with a gentle reminder of how this fondness was mutual. His hands let the alpha’s neck, pressing their forehead together until their eyes couldn’t stay away from each other.
“I don’t think an entire lifetime would be enough to let you know how much I love you, Katsuki Bakugo. I’m glad the gods blessed me with the sight of your smirk and addicting voice, giving us a second chance to rewrite the history,” the freckled man mumbled, moving his face closer to blond, who sensed how they were both out of breath at their closed proximity. “This time, I’ll make sure to be yours even if death tries to tear us apart.”
Katsuki barely had time to reply, feeling how the shorter figure shut him down with a sudden kiss. It was the first they had after 19 endless years of desperation and wasted tears, making sure to let it be unforgettable. In the past years, none of them forgot how addicting those lips were, chasing after each other like desperate souls begging to have the other’s complete attention. Their position wasn’t the most comfortable one, but the farmers didn’t care: the only that mattered for the moment was the joy and relief that overwhelmed their souls. Their shattered hearts became complete at the idea of finally being reunited, understanding how they refused to let each other go.
“I have so many things to ask you, but the first thing is why,” Izuku asked, regaining his breath. His eyes lost themselves in the crimson ones, letting his fingers intertwine with the calloused ones, guiding them to his chubby cheeks. “Why did you decide to face all this pressure on your own when we were supposed to share each other’s pain? I would’ve followed you anywhere you go, even if this meant rewriting the story thousands of times.”
“It was too risky, and your safety was my main priority, freckles,” the taller figure replied with a sad tone, letting his lips kiss the scarred hands and his mate’s forehead. Izuku’s eyes widened, being aware of how it was the kind of answer expected in those circumstances, but it was strange to hear it out loud. “My biggest regret was to never take the chance to admire the last I love you I shared with you or the genuine smile that made me fall for you. Leaving this house and you behind was the hardest decision of my life and my biggest regret, but it was necessary.”
“You’ve always been this strong and inspiring, no wonder why you caught my heart when we were just kids and still succeeded in making me fall in love with you at our big age,” Izuku pointed out with a soft tone, sitting beside his husband’s figure don’t he bed, resting his head against his shoulders. “I would’ve helped you, we both know you, and I would’ve found a way to solve this. I understand your worries, but it’s over, and you shouldn’t be afraid…not now you’re the only one missing at home.”
Oh.
The crimson eyes took a glance at the soft expression rising on his mate’s face, wondering what he meant by that. After all, the alpha was gone for too long, and he wondered what could’ve happened to Katsumi- talking about her, his heartbeat started to fasten, letting the farmer immediately notice the change in his husband’s scent. The emerald eyes looked at the crimson ones with genuine concern, cupping his cheeks and releasing a reassuring scent. Katsuki realized how he missed each of his lover’s words and gestures of affection, promising to catch up on the lost time and let him know how grateful he was to have someone like Izuku in his life.
“You're doing an amazing job, love,” praised the farmer with a light chuckle, kissing his husband's forehead to have his complete attention. “I understand your worries. A lot of things happened since you left, but everything’s fine now: the royal couple is out of reach, and our daughter has returned home…It’s the three of us against the rest of the world now.”
“When…” Katsuki had so many questions to ask, but the only thing he could express was relieved tears. He was more than happy to know his beloved Katsumi found a way back home, where she always belonged since her first breath. He knew it was a question he should ask later to his mate, but his joy betrayed the previous worries in his tormented irises.
“I’ve never stopped protecting her, even after your visit,” confessed the freckled man with a smile, holding his husband’s hands like they were two teenagers escaping from their hometown again. After all, it might’ve been confusing for the alpha, who needed to catch the last 19 years of his life and all the crazy events that happened between his departure and their touching reunion. “She appeared at our doorstep the afternoon of her 18th birthday in the most unexpected way. You should’ve seen our faces and how we refused to leave each other, but she’s an amazing woman and proud of her values…especially when it comes to saving her father.”
Katsuki was too stunned to speak. He couldn’t believe how the teenager he saw in his dream was now a woman, realizing how many years had passed since their last encounter. The Alpha couldn’t help but stay impressed to see how the tormented soul ended up being happy in this house that always belonged to her in the first place.
“Kacchan, we gave birth to a strong and inspirational child. I’ve never been so proud of her as I was in the last few years, but we both needed you to feel this complete puzzle. I know you have a lot of questions, and we’ll take the time to answer them now we have a lifetime to dedicate our love to each other.” Izuku confided with a smile, stealing a quick kiss on his childhood friend’s lips. He noticed the blush rising in his cheeks, melting his heart. The green-haired man couldn’t wait to return home with the man he loved and their strong daughter, finally reaching the happy ending they deserved. “I was terrified when I learned about your state, but now you’re finally with us, I’ll take care of you.”
“I’m sorry,” Katsuki said, putting his head against the omega’s shoulders. The fingers softly caressed his back, trying to reassure the taller figure about how he was safe. “I never wanted this to happen, but I did it to survive. I never wanted you to hate me, but you know I would never forgive myself if something happened to you or the brat. You’re the o the ones I care about, and I’ll die if someone tries to take my family again away from me.”
“Kacchan, you did an amazing job at protecting us even if you weren’t here to see how grateful we were for your kindness,” Izuku explained, kissing his mate’s forehead and feeling his heart-shattering at the teary eyes. “I trusted you the moment you became mine. I have no regrets marrying my best friend: You’re the best husband this world would have offered me and the most dedicated father to his legacy. From now on, you have to trust us and take the rest you deserve…Katsumi and I knew the fight was worth the wait if this meant seeing your ethereal face again.”
Katsuki Bakugo was a soldier used to fight against the cruelty of humanity to survive. The last 10 years have been the most vicious to his heart, replaying the same prayers every day to make sure his wish was heard. His case wasn’t different from the extras who ended up surviving on their own with different coping mechanisms. Yet, the blond wondered if the unsent letters he wrote for his family would be enough to have their forgiveness.
“I should’ve been there instead of exploring the world by myself without any hints about my final location. I ended up finding her, but at what cost? The only things I have now are scars that my body owned against its will and regrets drowning me at night,” the taller man confessed with a broken tone, noticing how the emerald eyes were worried about his state. After all, it was a rational reaction to gain consciousness of his actions once it was too late, but it was eating him from the inside. “I wish you and the brat could forgive me for my mistakes. I thought I had enough courage, but the moment I walked away from our house, I started to miss your smile. I’ll make it up to you, Izuku…I promise.”
The farmer’s eyes softened. His fingers cupped his husband’s cheeks and offered a light kiss on this broken skin, hoping it would heal a few of his insecurities. Izuku always admired how his childhood friend was doing his best to make his loved ones happier, being another reason why the freckled man fell harder for his husband, like their teenage years. Scarred hands lost themselves in the spiky hair, repeating a gesture that only they knew and that used to comfort their night.
“You’ve been too hard on yourself and need to realize seeing you alive is already a blessing, love,” the green-haired man explained. He knew it would take time to heal from those strong insecurities, but the farmer made the promise to stand by his lover’s side until the end. “You made the only choice left back in the day, and I have to admit it, I was hurt at first…but then I realized how this wouldn’t change the love I have for you. Kacchan, you’re the strongest person I know, and each time I look into your eyes, I’m facing the same teenager who offered me the world at the palm of his hands.”
“But-”
“But we had to survive and make choices we regret to this day. It hasn’t been an easy decision to take, but I’m relieved to know that the man I love is still a part of this world and never gave up, especially when death was around in the last ten years,” Izuku whispered, wiping away the last tears falling down his cheeks. Katsuki Bakugo deserved this place in this amazing family, where his presence was the biggest gift the gods offered him until now. “You’re so strong, and I’m proud of you for returning home here you always belong. I promise to stand by your side until the end because you’re my husband, the father of my child. My devotion for you is as breathtaking as the shining stars in your beautiful irises.”
Katsuki sighed, welcoming the gentle care of Izuku’s fingers. He’s never felt more loved than the current moment when the other part of his soul is looking at him with so much affection. His calloused fingers held the scarred ones tighter, almost like he was afraid to wake up from this dream too good to be true.
“Don’t ever leave me alone with my thoughts, nerd,” he whispered with a sigh, feeling the reassuring scent of his mate reaching his nose. His inner alpha melted at the familiar of this life he left behind, knowing he couldn’t wait to see his precious daughter again and give justice to Kenzo.
“I promise,” the shorter figure said with a smile, holding him closer to his chest. “From now on, it’s us against the rest of the world, and none will take away my family.”
Katsuki knew he needed more sleep after this emotional reunion, but he decided to rest a little longer in the hug. After all, he had the right thing to be selfish, right?
——-
The taller figure didn’t even notice when he opened his eyes the second time, being welcomed by the familiar sight of this tent, he started to know all too well. Yet, he didn’t complain when the scarred hands held him with gentle movements, being relieved to see his childhood friend alive. There were thousands of thoughts crossing their mind, but the couple decided to focus on each other’s presence. It was a question of time before falling asleep in the other’s warmth, being covered with prizes and gentle kisses.
“Why are you looking at me that way? I only took a nap, probably the longest since this shitty war,” the blond teased with a grin, noticing how a blush covered the omega’s cheeks. He always loved this tender sight and promised to cherish his lover with his entire heart, and now he has learned from his mistakes.
“Because you’ve never been this beautiful,” he added with a delicate kiss on his forehead, noticing how vulnerable he looked under this angle. “I can’t believe I have this breathtaking painting for myself until my last days. How lucky I am, I bet everyone in our old hometown would be jealous of us.”
“They did help you to confess against their will, but this wouldn’t erase the shitty rumors they spread about you,” there was still a bit of anger in the farmer’s tone, being immediately calmed down by his husband’s smile. “If I could, I would move away from this bed and teach them how-”
“Kacchan, it’s been years and this is a part of our past,” affirmed Izuku with a laugh, melting the blond’s heart. “I have no regret choosing you as my mate, and the world could say whatever they want with their jealousy, they would never take away our bond. There hasn’t been a single day where I don’t regret choosing you as the father of my child because Katsumi is exactly what I expected: a strong woman who gained her courage from your stubborn genes. She’s a good person, you know, and her innocence reminds me of our past self…so I’m trying to protect her.”
“You did an amazing job, nerd,” the blond declared with a grin, cupping his cheeks. “From the moment you welcomed her into this world, I knew you were made to cover her with love, even if she was just a fragile life. Izuku, you raised her in the most loving way, and I have no doubts about her supporting you in this journey. Yet, I’m concerned about her beliefs about me: we both know how you felt once your father left and-”
“Kacchan, this is different,” shortened the freckled man with a reassuring scent. He knew the blond took his father’s figure with the best of intentions, but seeing his childhood friend doubting their daughter’s love was heartbreaking. “My father left because he was an asshole who refused to assume the consequences of his selfishness. You left against your will to save us from our downfall and bring our daughter back home! You’re not like this man and will never be, and Katsumi keeps admiring about you from afar, even when fate wasn’t in our favor.”
Katsuki stayed silent, holding the scarred hands tighter. Izuku smiled, kissing his fingers while playing with his spiky hair like the old days.“Your worries are valid, but I’ve seen her growing up. I know she has your stubbornness but also abilities to genuinely care about her loved ones in a unique way. She loves you more than you think, and I know she’s excited to see her father again…because you’re the missing piece to our family.”
“Talking about her,” his eyes stared around, only to find a complete silence with background noises. It was evident how there was a lovely ambiance outside this tent, and the farmer wished he could take some air instead of being closed here…but he needed to regain strength. Katsuki knew he wouldn’t risk his life again, especially under the constant protection of his mate. “How is she ?”
“The whole thing was surprising, but she agreed to check on you while you were unconscious,” Izuku explained, catching how the crimson eyes widened at the news. “She’s doing her best to handle this emotional distress, but she’s tough…the strongest person I’ve seen. She reminds me of you in each of her actions and values, making me realize how a part of you still lives with us.”
“I can’t wait to see her, I bet she grew up a lot since the last time,” he teased with a grin, hearing a chuckle escaping from the other’s lips.
It was touching to see how Katsuki was determined to be this reassuring paternal figure Izuku never had in his life, especially when Katsumi genuinely missed him. The omega’s goal was to avoid the same insecurities he experienced as a child, being grateful to see how his childhood friend wanted to stand by his daughter’s side. Indeed, even the freckled man himself was feeling bad for letting their daughter think she was unloved by her parents when the couple had tried everything to reach for her. Today, the small head that waited desperately for her imaginary best friends ended up looking at them with a proud glance, realizing how she couldn’t wait to know more about all those stolen years.
“And I know she probably feels the same way about you but more stressed with the stories I shared while you were out of reach,” his fingers held the calloused ones with a delicate gesture, ruffling those new scars that broke his heart. Izuku knew he needed to wait for the narrative behind those fights, but he was more than relieved to face scars instead of a grave. “Stay here for a few seconds, I need to check with the nurse for your medication, I hope you won’t miss me too much, honey.”
“It’s not like I haven’t any choice, nerd,” he teased with a grin, making the shorter figure roll his eyes. Despite the annoying comment, Izuku was reassured to see how the man he loved returned home and would have the chance to experience the same unforgettable moments with their daughter. After all, Katsumi Bakugo deserved to spend the rest of her life with the ones who considered her a blessing, even if it was never too late to learn new hobbies. “But I’ll try to do my best.”
Katsuki’s words lost themselves in the wind as the shorter figure faded away. The blond used to be familiar with solitude, but the last hours made him realize how it was a privilege to have someone standing beside you, even in your most vulnerable moments. The farmer was grateful to see how his childhood friend hadn’t moved on or hated him after this terrible mistake. He couldn’t even imagine returning home and seeing his mate in someone else’s arms, considering the blond as a part of his past.
A simple glance at his wedding ring was enough to erase the previous worries, recalling the tender words shared by the nerd a few minutes ago. Izuku had always been talented in finding the right words to express himself and comfort others, no wonder why Katsumi and Katsuki considered him the most important person in their lives. Calloused hands moved stressfully against the sheet, being alone with his thoughts for the first time since he left the battlefield. The last memory he owned from this supposed freedom was the lifeless body of Kenzo, who decided to spend his final breath by his side. The gesture itself was meaningful enough to break any hearts, especially the ones who knew about the strong bond and friendship between the farmer and the lost spirit.
“Thanks for being my side, even in my last breath,”
Those words were supposed to sound reassuring, but why does it break Katsuki’s heart? The two of them were supposed to return home together and start their own path, with the blond offering him his support, no matter the end of his journey. Instead, all those dreams faded away, being replaced by ashes with blurry memories to anyone who knew Kenzo’s existence. Human life was as fragile as a thin string, where each of your actions wouldn’t matter once death welcomed you into its arms. This cruel reality was a harsh reminder of how it has been Kenzo’s life, but tomorrow, it could be Izuku or Katsumi’s if he made a mistake.
The farmer wished he had enough time to reassure the brat in his last breath, even if he knew how his poor attempts at keeping him alive in this terrible fate were taken into consideration by the young man. If only he had one more chance to erase his past mistakes and save Kenzo’s life…Maybe he would’ve been the one targeted, but he wanted to honor his name with the recognition this brat deserved. Lost in his thoughts, he didn’t even notice the footsteps appearing in the background noises until a sudden object fell onto the floor.
“You could at least say hi unless you’re already tired of welcoming your old man.” A slight grin crossed the farmerlips, raising his head and meeting the stunned eyes. “After all, you’re not the small pup I used to know, kiddo.”
Crimson eyes met the teary ones, which betrayed the multiple emotions crossing her chest. The entire time, she had been worried about her father’s state, hoping he’d wake up, and got surprised once she learned the great news. The dry tears on her dam’s cheeks were enough to know how the two of them got the reunion they deserved after chasing after each other for so long. Indeed, this dream became a reality once she caught the familiar crimson irises staring at her with the same gaze that haunted each of her nights since their last goodbye.
“Dad…”
Katsumi refused to let death take away such an important person in her life, especially after the reassuring promises he confessed when they were running out of time. A simple smile was all it took for the woman to break her shield and return to her younger self, the one wondering where this ghost that looked like her went. Her body moved on its own, and she rushed into the hospital bed.
Her messy curls ùet the alpha’s chest, sensing the familiarity of this scent she could recognize anywhere. Her skating hands held the taller figure closer, afraid to let him go as she welcomed the hot tears meeting her porcelain skin. Katsumi couldn’t believe how the ghost she had chased after so long was finally alive! The woman lost herself many times in the numerous scenarios about their potential reunion, but none felt more intense than the current one: Her chest was overwhelmed with joy, listening to the farmer’s heartbeat while her sobs resonated in the tent.
Katski couldn’t help but soften his gaze at the shorter figure, reminding him of his husband. The scars created by his insecurities instantly healed once he was able to see his daughter again after six endless years. The calloused palms held the vulnerable figure closer to his chest, releasing a comforting scent similar to the one she used to sense when she was only a newborn. The strong alpha decided to be honest with himself by putting his head on the blonde’s shoulders, letting her know how grateful he was to see her after all those desperate calls for help.
Father and daughter finally met after many unsolved questions at the tip of their lips, realizing how this bond they formed with an innocent meeting ended up forging itself into an invincible weapon against death. Katsuki recalled the previous illusion of seeing the lifeless body of his daughter being taken away, sending him into the most cruel near-death experience. Against their will, their two figures stepped back and simply stared at each other with their red bawling eyes, understanding how this was only the beginning of the most important conversation of their lives.
Katsuki’s fingers wiped away the tears falling down his daughter’s cheeks, noticing how much she’s changed since the last time he saw her. Each night, he despised himself for not being able to solve her questions, especially when the last sight he had of her was her broken expression, which offered more nightmares than hope. His heart missed a beat when he remembered how she used to be a newborn, unaware of this fate awaiting them, being reassured by her parent’s presence.
“The first time we met, you told me an unfinished tale about the hero losing himself in this crazy adventure to save his humanity. Back in the day, I was too scared to offer hope when I was facing death every morning,” the farmer confessed, playing with the messy curls that reminded him how much he missed her smile. “I think it’s time to offer a final comma by expressing out loud how the hero returned to his family and realized how much he missed them…I’m home, sweetie.”
It was the first Katsuki had been calling her with such a tender name, reminding her of the old days when her dam wasn’t afraid of sharing his emotions through meaningful nicknames. The realization hit her like a slap in the face, deciding to simply rest her head against the farmer’s chest and hold him closer, almost like she was a child afraid to leave her parents. The calloused hands gently caressed her back, calming the shaking figure who mumbled in her voice inaudible words due to the multiple sentiments appearing in her chest. At this moment, both shadows knew how they had finally found their missing piece, hoping this would be the beginning of a bright future between them.
“I was terrified at the idea of seeing you leave without a final goodbye,” Katsumi explained with a sad tone, noticing how the illusion in her imaginary world became older. It was touching to see how the years had passed, but the pride expression on his face remained the same, almost like the two of them didn’t need to talk to share how relieved they were to see each other. “I learned what happened, and it was brave of you to make such sacrifices, but don’t you dare leave us behind…Not now; we finally found you.”
“I won’t, you’re all I ever wanted, and I’ll make sure to cherish each moment with the ones who never gave up on me,” the farmer replied with a soft tone, being emotional at the idea that the tiny newborn inside his mate’s arms became a grown woman who still needed her father in his life. After all, Katsumi remained the same child who saw her youth stolen by selfish people, only to meet relief once the truth had exploded. “There are many things and apologies I want to confess, but I need to thank you for taking care of the nerd while I was gone. You have no idea how seeing you both reunited was enough to give me the courage to keep fighting, hoping it’ll be my turn soon.”
“But they took you away from me, from us,” the woman replied with a broken tone.“I know what they did and couldn’t believe how cruel this was, and leaving the castle was the best decision I’ve made until now. It led me to have the most unforgettable birthday present when Mom welcomed me into his life, but a part of me wished you were there to be reunited with us.”
“I’ve never stopped calling your and the nerd’s names since the moment I left this village. You were only two back in the day, but I knew the day would come when you’ll remember where you belong. I never gave up on you and your belief and saw how strong you became, but I wished I was there to celebrate your first everything instead of being a ghost of your past,” the taller man whispered, noticing how the shorter figure offered him a hug in return. This gesture might be a habit she had taken from the nerd, but it didn’t make it less appreciable! On the opposite, the farmer was relieved to see how his daughter succeeded in finding safety in Izuku’s arms.
“There’s a lot of things time erased from our journey, but a new beginning isn’t one of them,” confessed the woman with a soft tone. For a few minutes, she was this small child who desperately needed to comfort her father after a complicated day just to see a glimpse of his smile. “We always have the occasion for new experiences, and being reunited with my birth parents by catching the lost years is my biggest pride. Zuku always talked about you in an inspirational way, letting me read the goodbye letter you’ve written, and yet, you still impress me! I’m not afraid to discover more about this father who made me realize how close I was to the truth….And if you’re afraid, you can still have Kacchan.”
“Wait, you kept that relic ?”
Katsumi’s face turned into a smirk. “It never left me, but I wouldn’t mind sharing it with the people I care about. After all, Mom did fall asleep with it during your birthday, but I knew how it was his way to pray for your safety. It’s touching to see how you both love each other with genuine affection, and I couldn’t asked for a better family.”
“Shit, you’re able to make an old man cry,” the blond whimpered with teary eyes, welcoming his daughter into his warmth. Katsuki didn’t fight back the rising emotions inside his chest, recalling the last words whispered by Kenzo on the battlefield. His grab tightened, wondering if he would’ve been touched by such a scene if he was still a part of this world, but the farmer had a promise to keep. “Your courage reminds me a lot of him.”
“Who ?” The crimson eyes questioned in a curious tone, sitting on the chair and making sure to be the shoulder to cry on. If there was one thing the woman knew about this world, it was how her family was based on genuine attachment for each other in the most unique way, making this journey more unforgettable. Years ago, the lost tale of farmers giving birth to the products of their timeless promises allowed her to learn about this touching narrative. Yet, a part of her was genuinely curious to know each story her father had told on the battlefield.
“His name was Kenzo,” the farmer’s voice broke into a hesitant tone, knowing he needed to share this promise he kept with the innocent soul who’d become another grave beyond the thousands in a cemetery. “He never gave me his family name, probably afraid of the pressure owned by his ancestors. The first time I met him, he was the same age as you. I found his story touching and decided to take him under my arms and protection, mostly because he reminded me of you and your innocence.”
Katsumi stared at him with wide eyes. She should be jealous to see her sire treating another teenager as his own child, but she wasn’t: It was evident how the blond was finding reassurance in this Kenzo’s presence, knowing how it was the last embers attaching him to the life awaiting at home once the war will be over. Yet, she sensed how the tone in the alpha’s voice started to be sadder, hating where this story was going….
“I watched him grow and hold on to the promise we made together to escape from this hell, but it was too late, and I watched him die in my arms without being able to stop his bleeding injuries. We’ve just won and were supposed to be free, but the vulture of death decided to make him their last target.”
Katsuki didn’t know he was tearing up until he felt his daughter’s fingers holding him with a reassuring gesture. He was aware of how he should have kept this suffering private so as to not bother his family in this reunion they waited for so long, but he refused to let Kenzo’s name die.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” the blonde confessed with a sad tone, making sure to let the alpha know that he wasn’t alone. It must’ve been hard to say goodbye to such promises after fighting for too many years, especially when this ghost that joined the other innocent graves would probably be younger than her. One thing was clear: Katsumi Bakugo was proud to have a strong paternal figure like Katsuki, who taught her how courage was the key to success, and a mother like Izuku, who told her the important values of their unique bond. “But I’m sure he was glad you were the one guiding him in his last breath. We can’t save anyone but keep their narrative alive as long as we can share their stories.”
“The worst part was how I simply wanted to see him a last time and then….I started to have a panic attack at the vision of your lifeless body being replaced by his,” the farmer explained, noticing how the crimson eyes widened at the revelations. “I don’t know what I would do if they took you away from me and our family again. I will never forgive myself if something happens to you and-”
Sudden hands reached his shoulders, forcing him to raise his head and meet the worried emerald eyes. He didn’t know when his husband was here and how much he had learned from their conversation, but the heartbreaking expression on his face was enough to read how the omega shared the same sentiment inside his vulnerable chest.
“Kacchan, you’ve faced a difficult situation and were forced to say goodbye against your will. It’s not your fault and will never be, as Katsumi said: There are things we can’t change, but this doesn’t make you the monster of the story,” the freckled man admitted, regaining light in his skin that used to shine so brightly, even when the world was falling apart. “I’m sure you were the important presence this kid needed, and your worries are justified. After all, everyone has been separated from each other in this family…but look at us, fighting against fate and owning our happy ending.”
“But at what cost ?” The farmer asked, playing with the fabric of his clothes, a gesture the omega immediately recognized. It was the first time Katsumi had seen her parents interacting with each other in such gentleness, understanding how their numerous stories were a reality: the ones where Izuku and Katsuki were ready to bring the world down to save their significant other.
“You shouldn’t think about that now it's over. Look into my eyes and trust my words when I say that you’re safe and sound now you’re home,” Izuku confessed, cupping his cheeks. “I know you feel bad for missing a lot of things, but it's never too late to start again. I’ll never let you and Katsumi go now I found my family again, even if this means sacrificing myself to see a glimpse of your smile.” He turned around to play with the blonde curls. “Seeing our daughter returning home is already a blessing, and I love all of you.”
“Has mom always been this cheesy ?” Katsumi asked with a teasing tone, welcoming the hugs from the omega.
“The first time he held you, he couldn’t stop crying and started to promise you the world, I’m not surprised he became more sensitive with the crazy journey we experienced,” he added, joining the two figures, who gladly accepted him in their tender embrace.
“You’ve also cried! It’s too late to play the strong guy now you found out, pup, I thought we agreed about me being the good cop and you the bad-”
A soft chuckle escaped from the woman’s lips, catching both men’s attention. Their eyes met in a curious tone, noticing the genuine smile crossing their daughter’s lips. The couple’s heart missed a beat, melting at the heartwarming show. Izuku’s eyes teared up at the clear memory of this newborn who kept crying inside his arms, being now a wonderful woman who was the couple’s biggest pride.
“You’re so stupid, but I wouldn’t exchange the both of you against anything in the world,” she confessed with a soft tone, noticing how the farmers' gaze softened at her words. “When I was young, I was wondering how it feels to have parents who care about you. I never thought I would be able to stand beside them and admire how strong they were. We might be lucky to be alive after all these obstacles, but this doesn’t mean you failed as a survivor…because I learned that you’re the best parents I could ever have wished for. I didn’t know this day would come when I’ll stand under your side and say how much I love you.”
Izuku might’ve heard those words a thousand times, but it always made him tearful to hear them with such genuine love. The omega has chased this happiness for so long and refused to let it go now he has everything he wanted in the palm of his hand. Yet, it was the first time Katsuki was listening to this heartwarming confession, knowing this overwhelming joy was only the beginning of their new journey together as a family.
“We love you too, kiddo,” the farmer replied, meeting the emerald eyes who looked at him as if he was his everything. “But this belongs to the past, now the best part of this journey is awaiting us…but I’m proud to see how strong and inspiring my family is.”
Years ago, Izuku Midoriya fell in love with Katsuki Bakugo and decided to give him his entire trust about the upcoming obstacles in their narrative. To this day, the freckled man has never given up on assuring his family the happy ending they deserve, even if this means waiting endless years to see his loved ones reunited. Many stories remain untold, but the ghosts of their past will always reside in each of their speeches. Those tears would now be a sign of strength and promise people made to vulnerable shadows, now out of reach against their will. The “What ifs” might haunt Katsuki’s days, but he wouldn’t mind giving a visit to this grave to honor this innocent soul that was taken away…letting Kenzo’s name echo in those lands.
For the moment, Katsumi realized how she had never been this happier now she was finally reunited with her parents. She used to call them names and imagine their faces for so long, but nothing compared to the joy of bringing her back to life. This story starts with two innocent spirits escaping their hometown in quest of freedom, but the final page will be resolved around the three shadows holding each other like there was no tomorrow.
After all, maybe their fight was worth the way.
