Chapter 1: A Different Path

Chapter Text

Izuku Midoriya stared at the acceptance letter in his trembling hands, the bold U.A. Academy logo stamped at the top. He wasn’t going to be a hero in the way he’d always dreamed, but he was still going to make a difference. The support course was his ticket to stay close to the world he admired—even if it meant working from the sidelines.

The first day at U.A. was overwhelming. His green eyes widened as he walked through the bustling corridors, surrounded by students with quirks ranging from simple to awe-inspiring. Some of them flew, others left trails of fire or ice as they walked, and Izuku… well, he carried his sketchbook filled with designs. Every now and then, he’d catch glimpses of the hero course students. He recognized some from the entrance exam: Katsuki Bakugo, his childhood friend-turned-bully, and the stoic Shoto Todoroki with his striking dual-colored hair. They were everything Izuku had dreamed of becoming, and yet he was here, in the support course. But that didn’t mean he would give up.

Izuku’s classroom was nestled deep in the workshop wing of the campus. The air smelled of metal and oil, a mix that Izuku found strangely comforting. Rows of workstations filled the room, each equipped with tools, blueprints, and the faint hum of advanced machinery. Professor Power Loader stood at the front, his commanding presence drawing everyone’s attention.

“Welcome to the support course,” Power Loader began, his voice firm but encouraging. “Each of you has been chosen because you’ve shown potential to innovate, to create. Heroes might stand on the front lines, but it’s people like us who give them the edge they need to succeed. I expect nothing but innovation from you all. The hero world depends on our ingenuity. Remember, you’re not just building tools—you’re building futures.””

Izuku sat at his workstation, his fingers already itching to jot down ideas. Power Loader’s words resonated with him deeply. This was his chance to make a mark, to prove that even without a quirk, he could contribute to the hero world.

The first assignment was deceptively simple: design a basic gadget that could assist in a rescue operation. As the rest of the class began brainstorming, Izuku’s mind raced with possibilities. He flipped open his sketchbook, the pages filled with years’ worth of ideas and prototypes. Settling on a concept, he began sketching a compact grappling hook device that could aid in reaching victims trapped in high places.

By the time class ended, Izuku had a detailed blueprint ready. His classmates seemed impressed, with a few even glancing over his shoulder to admire his work. But Izuku barely noticed; he was too engrossed in perfecting the design.

Late that night, Izuku stayed behind in the workshop, sketching furiously. His mind raced with ideas—a grappling hook for enhanced mobility, a shield generator for defense, and boots that could absorb shock from high-impact landings. The pencil flew across the page, capturing the intricate mechanisms that would make his dreams a reality. For hours, he worked under the flickering fluorescent lights until his hands ached, but the grin on his face never faded. He was in his element.

But it wasn’t just about the designs. As Izuku worked, he thought about the people who might use his inventions. He imagined heroes soaring through the skies, shielding civilians, and outmaneuvering villains—all with tools he’d crafted. The thought filled him with a sense of purpose he hadn’t felt since All Might told him he couldn’t be a hero. If he couldn’t save people with his own hands, he’d make sure others could.

The following days were a blur of activity. Izuku immersed himself in the workshop, experimenting with materials and testing prototypes. He quickly became known as the most diligent student in the support course, often staying long after others had left. Power Loader took notice, occasionally stopping by to offer advice or challenge Izuku to think even further outside the box.

During lunch breaks, Izuku found himself wandering the U.A. grounds. The hero course students trained in open fields and state-of-the-art facilities that he could only dream of accessing. On one such day, he watched as Bakugo unleashed a torrent of explosions during a mock battle. The sheer ferocity of it left Izuku in awe and stirred old memories—memories of a time when Bakugo had been a symbol of strength, before their friendship turned sour. Yet, Izuku couldn’t help but sketch ideas for equipment that might augment Bakugo’s abilities, imagining ways to enhance his precision and control.

One evening, as Izuku tinkered with a prototype, he heard the faint hum of voices outside the workshop. Curiosity piqued, he peeked out to see a group of hero course students walking by. Among them were Bakugo and Todoroki, their confident strides contrasting sharply with Izuku’s own uncertain demeanor. For a moment, he felt a pang of envy. But then he glanced back at his workstation, at the grappling hook that was slowly taking shape.

“One day, they’ll use my inventions,” he whispered to himself, determination flaring in his chest. “And I’ll prove that I can be a hero too… in my own way.”

Power Loader’s praise came unexpectedly during their next class. “Midoriya, this is impressive work,” he said, holding up the prototype. “But tell me, how would it function in extreme weather conditions? Or under stress in a high-tension rescue?”

Izuku’s cheeks flushed. “I-I’ll improve it,” he stammered, already jotting down notes for adjustments.

“Good,” Power Loader said with a nod. “Because the hero world doesn’t wait for perfection. It demands results. Keep that in mind.”

Those words became Izuku’s mantra. Every late night in the workshop, every redesign, and every failure brought him closer to his goal. He learned to test his gadgets rigorously, pushing them to their limits. Some of his classmates began seeking his advice, recognizing his meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach.

One day, as he worked on a stabilization mechanism for his grappling hook, Hatsume Mei, another support course student, bounced into the workshop. Her enthusiasm was infectious as she showed off her latest creation—a pair of rocket-propelled shoes. Mei’s boldness contrasted sharply with Izuku’s methodical nature, but he found her energy refreshing. They spent hours discussing designs, bouncing ideas off each other, and occasionally competing to see who could come up with the most outrageous concept.

Through these interactions, Izuku began to realize that being quirkless didn’t limit him; it liberated him to think beyond conventional boundaries. His designs weren’t constrained by personal abilities but instead tailored to a world of endless possibilities. It was a revelation that fueled his passion even further.

As the days turned into weeks, Izuku’s confidence in his abilities grew. He learned to collaborate with his classmates, exchanging ideas and critiquing each other’s work. One of his favorite moments was when Power Loader organized a workshop-wide challenge: to design a multi-functional tool that could be deployed in both rescue and combat scenarios. Izuku spent three sleepless nights working on his submission—a wrist-mounted gadget that combined a grappling hook, an emergency light, and a small storage compartment for medical supplies.

The day of the presentation, Izuku’s hands shook as he demonstrated his invention. The class watched in awe as the grappling hook shot across the room, hitting its mark with precision. The emergency light activated with a soft click, and Izuku carefully explained how each function could save lives in critical situations. When he finished, Power Loader’s smile was one of genuine approval.

“You’ve outdone yourself, Midoriya,” the teacher said, patting him on the back. “This is exactly the kind of thinking we need in the support course.”

Izuku’s heart swelled with pride. For the first time, he felt like he truly belonged at U.A. He wasn’t just keeping up—he was excelling. And as he packed up his prototype that day, he couldn’t help but glance over at the hero course building in the distance. His journey was only beginning.
