It was a quiet morning. The sun slowly started rising, more and more light shining through the tent. Lime felt calm and relaxed as she was allowed to slowly wake up from her slumber, the contestants having been given another day off from challenges. There was a small breeze outside that rustled the leaves. It was so nice and quiet that Lime almost fell asleep again.
..but then came that annoying voice.
"Hey, Lime. Lime. Heyyyyyy. Limey Lime. Wake up!!"
Lime felt groggy as she opened her eyes. The light from outside blinded her. She already knew who it was, but her eyes finally focusing confirmed her suspicion. A small blueberry stood over them with a bright smile on her face.
Lime groaned, closing their eyes again and turning around to lie on their stomach instead. This wasn't anything new. They had lost count of the number of times Blueberry barged into their tent to wake them up for stupid reasons, and they knew very well this time wouldn't be any different.
Blueberry giggled at her annoyance, placing a foot under her to flip her around. "Come on, it's really nice outside! What better way to spend a day off than with my best bud!"
Lime glared at her, but there was no real anger to it. As much as they loved being left alone, Lime had learned to tolerate Blueberry. They'd even go as far as to say they liked being around her. Lime could keep being stubborn for as long as she'd like, but she knew she'd always follow Blueberry in the end.
It's not like she had anything better to do anyway..
"Fine.. What did you have in mind?" Lime begrudgingly sat up, looking up at Blueberry, whose smile never faltered.
"I wanna take a walk with you! Come on, it'll be fun!" Before Lime could give a response, Blueberry skipped out of the tent. Lime let out a sigh as they stood up and trudged outside after her.
At least Blueberry was right about the weather. It was sunny outside, and the breeze kept things at a nice temperature. It was pretty early, so a lot of the other contestants were still asleep in their tents. Not that it mattered, as Blueberry seemed to be heading towards a forest nearby, away from the competition grounds.
This wasn't the first time Blueberry had asked Lime to walk with her. She was always up and about, full of energy and making impulsive decisions. Lime had grown used to it. In a way, she found it comforting, knowing that Blueberry would always be there with her. That Lime could just watch Blueberry do her thing while they followed, always by her side. Despite how closed off Lime was and her constantly trying to push others away, Blueberry never stopped trying.
She was their friend.
It was such a weird thing to say, that Lime actually made a friend on this show. When she first joined, she never expected to grow fond of any of these people. Yet here they were, a small smile growing on their face as they watched Blueberry trying to climb up one of the trees.
"Try not to fall this time." Lime yelled out to her. They could hear her giggle. "I won't!"
Lime watched as Blueberry jumped from tree to tree. They started walking slightly faster to try and keep up with her. Lime never really understood what Blueberry found so fun about climbing up trees, especially since sometimes she'd only climb up to jump back down, which obviously never ended well.
Their thoughts were cut off when they heard a yell. Before they could process what was happening, Blueberry fell from the tree she was just climbing and landed right on top of Lime.
Blueberry started laughing as Lime let out a groan. "Sorry Limey. Good thing you were there to catch me, though!" She stood up and got off of Lime, helping them get back up as well. "How about you take a break from tree climbing for now.." Lime noticed Blueberry's disappointed look at the suggestion, but she quickly got back to happily skipping along the path. "Yeah, you're right. Don't wanna have another accident!"
Lime sighed in relief and started following her once again. Blueberry was so quick that either Lime had to speed up once in a while to keep up, or Blueberry would look back and realize she had to wait for Lime to catch up.
Not once was it quiet between the two. Blueberry was talking the entire time, constantly switching topics and sometimes excitedly yelling about something interesting she found. Lime didn't offer much to the conversation, but Blueberry didn't mind. They've always been more of a listener, and she was glad that she had someone who she could just ramble to with no worries. Lime loved hearing her talk. Everything about Blueberry was so interesting to her.
They sort of admired her. She could talk to people so easily it seemed, and she was always optimistic about everything. Lime was the complete opposite of her. She hated talking to people, and she was pretty pessimistic most of the time. She wondered why Blueberry bothered putting up with her.
"Hey, look!" Lime switched their focus over to what Blueberry was pointing at. There were small, blue flowers growing next to the path. They walked up to them in order to get a closer look. "They're cornflowers." Lime stated after examining them for a bit.
Blueberry knew about Lime's extensive knowledge about flowers at this point, and she always took the opportunity to ask Lime about it. It was nice seeing them be so passionate about something.
"What do they symbolize?"
"I.. Think it was hope?"
Lime picked one of the flowers from the ground, looking at it for a moment before hesitantly placing it onto Blueberry's head.
Blueberry was surprised by the action. She smiled not only at the small show of affection, but also at the faint blush that could be seen on Lime's face.
"They kinda remind me of you.. You make me feel hopeful." Lime looked away in embarrassment as they admitted that out loud.
"Aww, thank you, Limey!" Blueberry patted Lime on her head. They couldn't help but smile at that as well. "Whatever…" They replied lightheartedly.
Blueberry went back to walking along the path, this time with Lime right next to her.
In the end, it didn't matter how different they were. They always had each other to rely on.
After all, opposites attract.
