Chapter 2: Main Stories
Chapter Text
A bell chimed in a deep tone, an image of Princess Peach was shown as she addressed her nation's Parliament in a speech addressing the growing tensions between the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule.
“In a speech to World 0985's Mushroom Kingdom parliament today, Princess Peach condemned Hyrule of World 0286 for allowing inhabitants of the Koopa Kingdom to claim asylum in the aftermath of the recent war.”
Standing tall with a stony expression on her face, Princess Peach spoke in an almost monotone voice as an extract was shown from her speech.
“These invaders must be brought to answer for their crimes. I call upon Hyrule to hand over all Koopas so that we may investigate who took part in the war of aggression that we endured.”
The voice of the broadcaster went on as the image froze on the Princess. “Hyrule has refused Princess Peach's request and has stated it will continue to take in Koopa refugees. Also tonight:”
The bell sounded again, switching to the sight of a large circular chamber full of diplomats, their seats facing a podium where Galactic Federation President Pravin Lal was greeting a young, purple cat as the representative of the newly formed South Island Republic while the diplomats applauded.
“In an unanimous vote, the Galactic Federation officially recognised the government formed by the South Islands Liberation Army as the rightful government of the World 0691. Representative Blaze was there in person to witness the vote that took place in the aftermath of last week's liberation of Cyber City. Also tonight:”
The bell was heard once more as the camera switched to a scene of a dock somewhere in a warm climate. Police were dragging out a heavy set man with thinning blonde hair and he scowled at the cameras of the press.
“Tetsuya Shinra, former President of the Shinra Corporation, was found in an isolated villa Electopia of World 0301. He was arrested on charges of war crimes and is currently awaiting extradition to the Kingdom of Coneria. Also tonight:”
The bell tolled for the last time when the final major story was shown with pokémon trainers and their pokémon at Indigo Plateau, getting ready for the upcoming Pokémon League. Several competitors waved to the camera as it looked over the crowd, people and pokémon alike looking excited to be there.
“The Pokémon League Tournament of World 0296 will have its opening ceremony this evening with the competitors getting ready to take part. League Champion Red will be defending his title against any challengers who manage to defeat the Elite Four.”
With that, the opening montage started as it showed scenes from the news of the day. Focusing on Princess Peach's speech, it also showed scenes of the vote in the UN, celebrating crowds in Cyber City, the arrest of Tetsuya Shinra and more. Once the bombastic theme music toned down, the focus turned to the studio where a young, blond woman was preparing herself for the broadcast. Along with the modern, glass desk, the green screen effects in the background would change to reflect which story was being discussed at that time. In this case, it featured a picture of Princess Peach making her speech to the Mushroom Kingdom's parliament.
“This is the OBC multi-world news at 6:30, showing a selection of news-stories across the different universes.” a deep voice said over the fading music “Here is your host, Robin Miller.”
Miller looked into the camera with a professional looking smile and she greeted the audience. “Good evening,” she started while a picture of Princess Peach addressing Parliament appeared on the green screen behind her. “In tonight's top story, a speech to the Mushroom Kingdom Parliament of World 0985 today saw Princess Peach condemn Hyrule for taking in asylum seekers from the Koopa Kingdom. Claiming that Hyrule was 'potentially harbouring terrorists', the Princess asked Hyrule to expel any Koopas from its lands. Our political correspondent, Holly White, reports.”
Moving away from the studio, the camera then showed footage of the Mushroom Kingdom's House of Parliament, the two sides watching as Princess Peach gave her speech from the ornate throne at one end of the chamber. She spoke with a firm voice, almost harsh sounding, with the words to match.
“The allowance of potential terrorists and their sympathisers into the Kingdom of Hyrule is a direct insult to all those who suffered under the Koopa occupation of our lands. The banishment of King Bowser has not ended the issue, we need to perform a root and branch investigation into who were responsible for what actions. We ask that the Kingdom of Hyrule close their borders to all Koopas until we can be certain which of them should be put on trial.”
The speech was greeted with loud applause from the members of the Parliament while Holly White spoke over the scene. “This was the approach Princess Peach took towards the refugee crisis that came from the aftermath of the Koopa War. In the two months since the defeat and disappearance of King Bowser, the chaos that has come from the destruction of centralised power in the country, along with the occupation of certain parts of it, have led to many fleeing to the border of the Kingdom of Hyrule. One MP was quick to praise the speech.”
The camera switched to an MP who was smiling at while he spoke, evidently having welcomed the speech while the tagline at the bottom of the screen announced him as being an MP called Captain T. Toad. “It's a good move by the Princess. The Koopas are taking advantage of the kind nature of Princess Zelda to hide from their crimes. They need to be stopped from their escape so we can perform the proper level of investigation and bring those responsible for the crimes committed by the Koopa army to trial.”
The view cut to Toad Town, showing the construction and recovery that was taking place due to the Koopa invasion. There were still Toads living in tents as they waited for their homes to be rebuilt, Holly White explaining the situation. “To those affected by the Koopa War, there was support for the measure with several people we talked to calling for the Princess to do even more.”
It switched to various Toads, from all walks of life, rich and poor, young and old and they gave their opinions on what the speech meant to them.
“After what the Koopas did, every last one of them should go on trial. They all stood beside Bowser when he invaded, so why should they be able to walk free now just because he's vanished?”
“We went through so much during the war. If anything, the Princess isn't being harsh enough.”
“Princess Zelda should be ashamed of herself! If we had taken in Ganon, there'd be open war! All those who helped Bowser should be marched out and forced to face actual justice.”
“They're complaining about us not wanting them to hide in Hyrule? After what they did to Mushroom City, it's the least they deserve.”
A shot was shown of a Toad family sitting around a fire, trying to get warm in the evening light “Such sentiments are common among those who have suffered during the Koopa War and the brief occupation of the Mushroom Kingdom. There have been those who have called this version of events into question however, typically those from the Koopa side of the conflict.”
Another refugee camp, another Kingdom. The circumstances here though were much worse. Tents were fewer and dirtier. A lot of the refugees had a defeated look about them. Those that looked at the camera showed how tired they were with expressions that almost bordered on apathy.
“On the border of Hyrule, former subjects of King Bowser have gathered for any kind of sanctuary. They have fled from approaching Mushroom Kingdom soldiers that now occupy their homes. We spoke to one of those who were trying to set up a provisional government amid the refugee camps to try and represent themselves better.”
The camera then cut to an old looking Koopa which the text at the bottom of the screen identified as 'Krag' as he spoke. “We are being punished far beyond the actions of Bowser. What he did was evil and I make no excuses for it, but the Mushroom Kingdom has always tried to exploit us. Had they not pushed us so hard, the war could have been avoided. They have to understand that they share responsibility for what happened and the occupation of out homes is unjustified. We have lost so much because of what they have done to us. This needs to end, or people might just flock to Bowser if he returns.”
The scene then cut to Holly White, dressed in a thick jacket and jeans to help combat the late winter of Hyrule while she stood in the Koopa refugee camp. “The effects of the brief war are still being felt across these lands. While the Mushroom Kingdom has hope ahead of them in their recovery, the Koopas who have been driven from their homes fail to even have that. Princess Peach's words have done little to comfort them. There is a long road ahead for everyone who has been hurt by this conflict and no one can see the end. Holly White, Hyrule.”
The news studio then came back into focus, showing that the camera had pulled out to reveal Robin Miller and a screen that displayed Holly White in the Koopa refugee camp. The darkness behind her was showing it to be very late at night. “And we have Holly White joining us via video link up,” Miller said to the camera before turning to the screen “Holly, what has been the reaction to Princess Peach's speech regarding Hyrule today?”
“Resignation, if anything,” Holly replied, “The Hyrule government have long known that their taking in of refugees would risk backlash from the Mushroom Kingdom and they had they have recently released a reply stating that while they acknowledge the words of Princess Peach, they cannot ignore the refugee crisis before them.”
“Is it likely that the Mushroom Kingdom will press the issue?”
“It doesn't seem as if they'll make any moves right now. The Mushroom Kingdom is still busy recovering from the war and is currently overseeing its own occupation of regions of the Koopa Kingdom. However, the fact that Princess Peach has made such a public statement will not be forgotten anytime soon by the Hyrule government and it can be expected that relations will sour over this.”
“And what is the situation on the ground in the refugee camps? What are conditions like?”
Motioning behind her to the tents and Koopas, Holly almost let the situation speak for itself. “Conditions are poor. The Hyrule government hasn't had the time or resources to fully take on the refugees coming in from the Koopa Kingdom. Although the situation is stable and improving slowly, the winter cold has made the problems harder for everyone involved and the Hyrule government has appealed for donations to help with the ongoing crisis.”
“Holly White, thank you,” Robin said and the report ended. Robin then looked back to the camera to continue with other news stories. Behind her, the image had changed to show the Galactic Federation General Assembly in session. “In other news, the Galactic Federation voted unanimously to recognise the South Island Liberation Front as the legitimate government of World 0691. The vote took place earlier today as a result of last week's capture of Cyber City by the S.I.L.F. Reporting from U.N. Headquarters is our war correspondent, Frank West.”
Switching to a shot of the diplomatic delegates sitting in the General Assembly Hall after the vote had taken place, the camera panned over them applauding after the results of the vote were called out. “This was the historic and much awaited vote which saw every member of the Galactic Federation extend recognition to the new World 0691 government today.” Frank West's voice explained, “The process was overseen by UN Commissioner Pravin Lal, who welcomed the vote as the start of a new era in that world's history. The Commissioner made a speech of his own immediately after the vote.”
The camera turned to the tall and thin figure of Pravin Lal, standing at the podium that the Assembly Hall was focused upon. “As many have learned before now, denying freedom is an act of tyranny that calls out for justice. Before us today stands one who followed this call and did not falter. She, and many others like her, braved a terrible fate so that they might know freedom. It is only right that we acknowledge this struggle and aid those who have overcome such great odds.”
Panning over the Assembly Hall, the camera showed the numerous diplomats applauding this speech and the appearance of the young, anthropomorphic purple cat who stood up to the podium to make her speech as well. “This was followed by a representative of the South Island Liberation Front, and official diplomat to the Galactic, Blaze, making her own speech.”
Despite her youth and short stature, Blaze seemed to carry herself with a sense of dignity beyond her years that the camera caught easily. “What has happened here today is a big step towards the liberation of our homeworld. But there is still much work to do. The South Island Liberation Front has defeated Robotnik in the field, but we must urge the Galactic Federation to give what aid they can so that we may rebuild our homes and bring prosperity back to our people.”
More applause followed this, Blaze allowing a small smile at the reception. The camera then switched to World 0691 itself and Cyber City. It showed similar scenes to the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule, people living in tents and there was a general sense of poverty. Unlike those two however, there was a feeling of jubilation about the place. Many of the anthropomorphic inhabitants waved towards the camera when it looked over to them and children were seen playing in the streets.
“In Cyber City, the news was greeted with celebration, adding to the good feelings that many already have after the liberation of the city just last week,” Frank West spoke, as other shots of crowds cheering as they crowded around a small television while they watched the vote in question. “The war is still ongoing in a few small holdouts across South Island, but for many, the end of a long, hard struggle is in sight.”
Recorded imagery of the war on the Earth 0691 was displayed, showing the hero of the resistance, Sonic, leading the charge against Robotnik's metallic forces. Others were with Sonic when he struck at them, giving support against the robotic horde, making it clear who the eventual victor would be.
“This has been the next step in the eventual recovery of the World 0691 and the liberation of its people. Frank West, South Island.”
Ending on that note and a final shot of crowds celebrating the news of the vote, the camera then cut to back to the studio where Robin Miller was waiting. The screen behind her showed Frank West, standing in what was formerly Robotnik's own palace. There was a crowd behind him, cheering and celebrating, several jostling for position to be seen by the camera, the entire atmosphere being one of a party.
“I'm joined by Frank West now and... it appears that the celebrations are going strong, Frank.”
Frank waved a hand towards the back where the crowd were all cheering, a large smile on his own face from the celebratory atmosphere. “It's been one reason after another to celebrate, Robin. The string of victories against Robotnik, the liberation of Cyber City and now the Galactic Federation vote have helped create high morale everywhere.”
“What are the supply situations like at present? Has there been any problems with the Federation's aid getting through?”
“Amazingly enough, no. Although rationing is still in effect, there have been no issues with malnutrition. Everything is going as well as can be-”
Frank was suddenly cut off when an anthropomorphic bee suddenly flew in front of the camera. The child grinned and waved his hands wildly. “Hey! I'm on TV! Hey, everyone!”
“Charmy! Get back here right now!”
Some minor chaos followed as a large crocodile and chameleon took a hold of the bee and pulled him gently, but firmly, off camera, apologising all the way. Not phased in the slightest, Frank simply nodded his head towards the trio. “The wonders of live television.” he said with a grin.
Robin nodded, giving her own smile in response. “It certainly seems so. Has there been any word on elections to help establish a new government, now that the fighting has moved away from the major centres of population?”
“The provisional government is expected to announce a schedule for elections soon. The South Island Liberation Front is on the verge of taking control of the last of Robotnik's strongholds on Earth 0691 over the next few weeks. Once the conflict has ended on the island, preparations are expected for the democratic process to begin.”
“Frank West, thank you.” Holly said and then she turned away from the screen and back to face the camera while the image of a scowling rotund blonde man showed on the screen behind her.
“In related news, former President of the Shinra Corporation of World 0197, Tetsuya Shinra, was arrested in a villa off the coast of the Electopia on World 0301 today. Shinra, who is wanted for war profiteering, among other charges, has been on the run for six months, was recently implicated in aiding the Robotnik regime of South Island after the discovery of documents in the aftermath of Cyber City's liberation. Our diplomatic correspondent, Alyssa Ashcroft, is on the scene to report.”
Leaving the studio behind, the camera cut to Beach Street in Electopia where a boat was had pulled into the port. Police were on hand to hold back a large crowd, made up of reporters and many others who'd come to see Shinra being brought in. A portly, blonde man, who looked distinctly worse for wear, was soon seen as he was shoved ahead of a group of people who would be familiar to those who followed one of OBC's more popular television shows.
“This was the scene today at the docks of Electopia. Tetsuya Shinra, having been evading police for six months in relation to the charges that had been brought before him, was arrested today after a raid took place on the isolated island that had been serving as his home for as of yet unknown period of time.”
Pushed forward by the group behind him, Shinra brought up his hands to hide his face from the camera flashes and questions shouted by reporters around him. The humiliation was obviously too much for him to truly take and wasn't helped as he was handed over to local police officers who were ready to take him into a nearby van. The crowd, the famed residents of Seventh Heaven among them, contrasted by this by looking more than satisfied at the state of affairs.
“Investigations made by Interpol, as well as many private efforts, led to Tetsuya Shinra, the former President of the Shinra Corporation, being tracked down to this villa off the coast of Electopia. Working in conjunction with the private environmentalist group, AVALANCHE, Interpol officials alerted the Electopia authorities to Shinra's presence. His arrest this morning was part of an operation put together by both worlds to bring him in.”
The camera then cut to a large man wearing shades and with a prosthetic on his arm that doubled as a gun. The tagline identified him as Barret Wallace, leader of AVALANCHE. He was sitting in a bar that would be quite familiar to those who kept up with OBC programming and that of World 0197.
“It's taken too damn long, but we've finally brought down the man that caused so much suffering. We're gonna make sure that things'll stick and he'll pay for his crimes! We worked really hard for this and we're gonna see it through to the end!”
The sentiment was shown further when the camera cut to bar where several of the staff and many regulars applauded members of AVALANCHE when they came through the door. The group looked triumphant to various levels and reacted to the applause with waves and appreciative gestures. It had, after all, been their hard work that had made this possible.
“Although this isn't the final stage of the triumph, it is the first major victory that AVALANCHE can enjoy. The trial of Shrina has yet to be scheduled and there is a sense that things are only just starting. Alyssa Ashcroft, Kingdom of Corneria.”
Once more, the camera cut back to the studio with Holly facing the screen that showed Alyssa standing outside a courthouse. It was evening, but even then, there was a crowd hanging around, although police were in place before the entrance to prevent any them from getting rowdy. “Thank you for joining us,” Robin said, “What is the current status of Tetsuya Shinra?”
“He's currently in custody, awaiting extradition,” Alyssa answered, “Shrina himself has started the process of contacting his lawyers and they are getting ready to present the argument for their client. It's unlikely that he is going to be awarded bail due to the nature of his crimes and flight risk nature, but we can be sure that Shrina's lawyers will do whatever they can to make things easier for him.”
“And the crowd around you, how is their mood?”
“The general mood is a sort of grim triumph. The exposure of Shrina's crimes, along with the many abuses that his company allegedly took part in, has galvanised public mood against him. Few people are happy about things, but the fact that he has been caught and is currently awaiting trial has made many feel that things are on the right track.”
“Is it looking to be a long trial?”
“It's early days yet, but undoubtedly, there's going to be a number of issues surrounding the charges. While the prosecution is confident with the evidence it has in hand, Shrina's legal team is going to do everything they can to help their client. Considering the number of charges being placed against Shinra, it's likely to be a very drawn out affair.”
“Alyssa Ashcroft, thank you.”
The camera turned back to Robin, who kept up a steady gaze when she spoke. “Still to come tonight on OBC news: A major drug operation centred on World 1197 was foiled by the efforts of Interpol and various police agencies. The first major line of robots to be used in construction has been deployed by the manufacturer, Light Industries of World 1287 to be used in a variety of projects. And in sports, the Pokémon League of World 0296 opening ceremony is to happen tomorrow night. All this and more after the adverts.”
With the theme music sounding off as the news went into the break, Robin looked down to her notes and retained her professional demeanour up to the camera switched off. Now that the first part half of the news was finished, it was time for the adverts.
Chapter 3: Adverts
Chapter Text
Before each advert began, the World of origin was noted, following OBC's guidelines to bring people to the different worlds and highlight the best of each one.
WORLD 0197:
A familiar scene for many was shown with the layout of the Seventh Heaven bar and restaurant being displayed. The wooden interior was lit up with neon signs and a TV screen was in the back while Tifa Lockhart, the owner of the establishment, was seen speaking with the regulars at the bar. Cloud and Jesse could be seen helping serve at the bar too, the former once again refusing the underage Yuffie in her usual attempt at ordering an alcoholic beverage. During this, the narration spoke in a coy tone.
“This week on Seventh Heaven, things get tense as the wedding approaches and preparations start to go awry.”
With the timing one would expect from reality television, scenes of chaos were shown with Biggs and Wedge dropping a box which, from the sounds of things, was carrying something very delicate and expensive inside. Cloud and Zack were seen running to the motorbike, which failed to start, regardless of how much of a rush the two seemed to be in. Finally, Aerith strode through the bar with a face full of fury, making several regulars dive to the side except for Reno, who hadn't been paying attention and paid for it by being sent sprawling by the approaching Aerith.
“Only one week left until the wedding itself. Will things go smoothly for Aerith and Zack's big day? It'll all be revealed on tonight's episode of Seventh Heaven!”
The logo for the famed reality television show popped up, showing the time it would start and entertain its usual audience.
WORLD 0516:
The camera opened up on an MV-261 Orca aircraft, flying through the air with a dramatic burst of sound. It flew up overhead against a sapphire blue sky while a familiar, cheery voice spoke.
“Every day brings new challenges. When I first joined Overwatch, I knew that there was going to be a lot of hard work, but I never realised the full extent until after I began.”
Several short films were then shown with the owner of the voice being revealed to be Lena Oxton, better known as Tracer and one of the most well known members of the famous organisation. Images of her pulling people out of a collapsed building, of her sitting in a cockpit, ready to fly and of her rushing into a battle, guns drawn. Every image conveyed her willingness to jump into action and do the right thing.
“I've been across the world. I've been pushed well beyond my limits. I've found out who I truly am. And I've done it all with the best people I have ever known.”
Further images were shown of Tracer working with other members of Overwatch. Working on a technological problem with Winston, the gorilla, giving out aid parcels with the doctor famously known as Mercy and flying overhead next to the mech piloted by D.Va.
“There's always new challenges ahead, new obstacles to overcome. The worlds could always use more heroes. Will you be one of them?”
The final shot showed Tracer smiling at the camera with the Overwatch symbol at her side and the recruitment information below. The question was left open to the viewers of whether they would follow the path suggested for them.
WORLD 0904:
A blast of horn music accompanied the sight of a tuxedo-clad man parasailing down onto a desert island. The shots followed him doing various secret agent types of things. Every time the horns hit a particularly high note, the scene switched with the man fighting guards in brightly-clad uniforms, setting explosives and charming a beautiful woman wearing little else besides a bikini. Several words on a black background popped up to view to help explain this.
JOHN STEELE IN HIS MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE YET.
Another montage followed with more exciting moments with the world's most famous secret Super Agent. Where it was driving a car recklessly through the crowded streets or firing his gun at off-screen foes, it built up to a high point where the final note saw Steele facing the camera, the confident smirk on his face almost as much of a trademark as his suit and quips.
DOOMSDAY BECKONS
IN CINEMAS SOON
With that, the latest movie in a long line of the spy franchise made itself known to the viewers.
WORLD 0401:
The viewer was greeted with the sight of a lush, tropical beach full of people relaxing and generally having a good time. Whether it was people sunning themselves, splashing in the blue ocean, or walking along the golden sands, everything looked perfect for a holiday. Something that the narrator was eager to speak up about.
“Here in Tropico, we take a more relaxed view on life. When surrounded by such natural beauty, how can we do anything but enjoy it?”
The camera shifted to a a different part of the island, showcasing markets, churches and wide streets that highlighted how clean and well cared everything was.
“A holiday in Tropico is sure to help you forget the rigours of day to day life and take part in a place that is welcoming and beautiful all at once. Our natural treasures are only matched by the friendliness of our inhabitants.”
The focus then turned to a hot air balloon that was going over ancient ruins that could just be seen in the jungle underneath. It was a breathtaking sight and on that would be sure to excite any tourist who wanted to take a brand new experience.
“Come to Tropico on World 0401, where the land is beautiful, the people are friendly and tourists are always welcome.”
A couple standing on the balcony of a fancy hotel made up the final shot. The camera panned up to show a vibrant city underneath and then the nation name appeared, with Sun taking the place of the first 'o'.
WORLD 0882:
With a catchy jingle suddenly sounding, several appetizing looking foods appeared centred around a huge beefburger with that was stacked high with numerous toppings. It looked delicious and was accompanied by numerous variations of different burgers with their own sauces and toppings.
“Right now at BurgerTime, enjoy our BeefStack meal for only 10 gil! This comes with a BeefStack burger, fries and a large milkshake with three flavours to choose from!”
Three large milkshakes were shown of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate were shown alongside the rest of the BeefStack meal. Even for those with a hefty appetite, it looks to be a large amount to get through. Something that many would recognise would be worth the price.
“Our quality meals are ready to be served 24/7! Come on down to BurgerTime and satisfy your cravings!”
The advert ended on a wide view of the meals available at BurgerTime and their prices, topped by a stylised representation of Peter Pepper, the company's rotund founder. It was a familiar picture for anyone who had a tendency towards picking up fast food across the different worlds.
WORLD 1093:
The advert opened up to a striking sunny cliff-side with a road curving down the edge. On the road was a stylish red car that followed the road smoothly and fast. Every curve was turned without losing speed and the camera focused in on just how sporty the vehicle looked. There wasn't a blemish on it and it kept up a fast pace while heading down the road on the cliff.
Before long, the car reached the bottom of the cliff and came to a smooth stop. The view lingered on it for a moment before text appeared on the screen, its confident tone evident even with just writing.
QUALITY SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.
ASSOLUTO REGALO
Below was pricing information, but the advert ended with the real message made.
WORLD 0515:
A flash of noise and light opened the next advert with a stadium stage exploding with pyro to start a show. The camera panned out over the cheering audience waving their glow sticks and getting hyped to see the band. An upbeat tempo started that would be familiar to anyone who followed popular music at this time and the narrator began to talk.
“The Deep Cut Anarchy Tour is coming to an arena near you! Shiver, Frye and Big Man are here to play all their great hits and some never before heard songs as well!”
The trio themselves were shown performing on stage, getting the crowd hyped with their songs and dance moves. The pacing was energetic and the trio were intercut with fans enjoying the show completely.
“The tour continues throughout the summer and will be visiting the following areas!”
A series of stadium and area names across various worlds scrolled up the screen while Deep Cut's performance continued to play in the background. Locations such as the Excitebike Arena and Virbank Gym were listed, among others.
“Be sure to get your tickets before they sell out! Deep Cut are coming to a concert near you!”
Deep Cut posed for the final shot of the advert, the last note of the song lingering to let people know that much more awaited fans who went to a concert.
WORLD 0996:
The first sight of this advert was a large building, brightly painted on the front with the sign proclaiming the franchise it was part of, JUNES. People were walking in and out with shopping trolleys full of food and other goods. Just in case viewers missed it, the narration helped explain things.
“Here at Junes, we're bringing down prices even further for the summer holidays!”
A collection of pop drinks and sweets were seen with a large arrow down beside them.
“Our treat range beats the prices of our competitors and makes for a great way to make those summer parties special!”
A large plasma TV was shown with the top price slashed to be replaced with one that was two-thirds of the previous total.
“A third off on all plasma-screen televisions!”
Numerous suntan lotions were then displayed, numerous brands all shown to have been reduced in price as well.
“And twenty percent off all sunscreen!”
All these items were then shown together with a vivid yellow background helping highlight them.
“All these are more are on sale right now! Be sure to come down and grab our bargains!”
The screen then showed the name of Junes in familiar font while the famous jingle capped off the advert.
“Every day's great at your Junes!”
WORLD 1090:
A busy bar was the first thing that greeted watchers, full of people dressed in very old fashioned clothes. Circa early 1700's old fashioned. With many looking like pirates and other such figures, the atmosphere was rough and rowdy with numerous fights being breaking out while, in the foreground, two pirates looked down at their mugs.
“Bah, this rum's no good!”
“It be why everyone's so foul in their moods, it be!”
With that, a man with dark hair and a strangely unmoving plaid jacket appeared into view with a dark bottle in his hand and a smile on his lips while he looked at the camera.
“Well, friends, here's where that ends with Monkey Island Grog!”
A cut occurred with the focus now on the bottle pouring its contents into a large mug. Worryingly, the metal seemed to spark once the drink was poured into it. Despite that, the voice continued to speak.
“Monkey Island Grog is the perfect drink for parties, get togethers, or sailing the seven seas! Just a sip is sure to make everything seem brighter!”
The two pirates, now holding different mugs from the ones that they were holding before as well as the one that the drink had been poured into, took a large gulp from their new drinks. Both let out overly-satisfied sighs once they were done.
“That's the stuff alright!”
“Can't beat Monkey Island Grog, that's for sure!”
The scene then showed that the fights had stopped and things were calming down due to everyone now having what was allegedly a pint of Monkey Island Grog in their hands. Everyone looked at ease and chatty while taking huge swigs of the drink while the plaid-clad salesman smiled at the camera.
“You listen to Stan and get yourself some of the good stuff. Monkey Island Grog!”
The final shot of the advert was a bottle of Monkey Island Grog, the label showing a faded skull done in a stylised manner like an old map. It was joined by a very fast voice doing a disclaimer as well.
“MonkeyIslandGrogisnottobedrunkwhiledrivingrunningpregnantscubadrivinghoppingononefootordoinganylightphysicalyormentalactivityastheresultsmaybeexplosive.”
WORLD 0886:
Things turned more serious with the adverts being left behind and a low thrum of music being heard while images of a rounded helmet were seen. The focus pulled back slowly, revealing more of the figure wearing the yellow and orange power suit. While voices talked over it, each sentence being interrupted by the next.
“She came out of nowhere, just-.”
“... if it hadn't been for her, the Federation would have...”
“... pirates aren't safe any...”
“... real champion when people needed...”
“... mystery to her that...”
“... did she come from?”
“... she after anything?”
“... is she?”
The full view of the woman in the power suit was revealed before one final question was asked.
“Who is Samus Aran?”
The focus remained on Samus while the screen turned to black and white and the date and time of the documentary was revealed.
METROID HUNTER: THE SAMUS ARAN STORY
THIS FRIDAY AT NINE
With that done, the break was over and things would return to the studio.
Chapter 4: Other Stories & Weather
Chapter Text
A reprise of the earlier bombastic theme tune was heard and the focus returned to the studio where Robin Miller was ready to greet the audience with a steady gaze. The image on the screen behind her were of a bundle of notorious narcotics, purple mushrooms. “Welcome back. A major drug operation was broken today by the efforts of numerous police forces across the various worlds. The operation, which focused on smuggling purple mushrooms across the world, was valued to be worth one billion gil. Reporting from World 1197 is our crime correspondent, Anna Myers.”
The switch from the studio to the report was rather stark. A container was shown stacked high with shelves that stocked purple mushrooms in abundance. Hundreds were shown as the camera zoomed into the shelves and Anna Myers began to talk.
“This was only some of the narcotics that were uncovered today in an inter-world operation. Numerous police agencies struck at various locations across several nations and brought in a major drug haul, as well as making over two hundred arrests in numerous worlds. Police have yet to reveal the identities of the suspects, but the Don Weaso crime organisation and Madrazo Cartel have been stated to be among those taken into custody.”
Footage of police taking drugs out of the containers were shown, the substances stuffed into sealed bags while they were being carried. The scene was a busy one with police vans and cars everywhere. It was daylight and the activity from the police was easy to see, which was most likely the point.
“Police struck numerous spaceship yards across the world approximately nine hours ago. The operation, which focuses on purple mushroom smuggling, was believed to have extended across many nations and suspected to be the largest of its kind.”
The camera turned its focus to a famous Interpol agent and fighter, known by many to be one of the strongest around. The tagline introduced her as Chun Li and she retained her famous poised and professional look while she spoke.
“The operation this morning was a striking success. We, along with numerous other police forces, have broken a major drug smuggling operation and have arrested many of the suspected leadership. With this contraband off the streets, we have struck a major blow against crime and made a big step towards cutting the supply of these drugs.”
Following such words were more images of the drugs being stacked and ready to be shipped off to evidence. Purple mushrooms continued to be the main thing, with the fungi being known for its detrimental effects to health. Yet, when cut with other drugs in just the right amount, it caused the highs created to intensify greatly. The sheer amount allowed to be shown must have been dwarfed by whatever else the police had brought in. While originating from the Mushroom Kingdom, their effect and ability to be grown just about anywhere made the popular for export across many worlds.
“The scale of the operation here is a clear showing of how seriously the police took the threat. With the capture of so many drugs, there's no doubt that the impact of this will be felt. Further developments are expected as the police follow leads that will have no doubt arisen from this operation. Anna Myers, World 1197.”
With that report finished, Robin appeared once more. Due to it not being one of the main stories, however, she went on with the next section of the news rather than follow up on the previous one. “Today, Light Laboratories of World 1287 announced its line of industrial robots will begin mass production. At a ceremony, Doctor Light promised this would be a new dawn in robotic technology. Our technology correspondent, Kōji Jinnai, reports.”
The scene then swiftly changed to a large and surprisingly pristine factory where a crowd of reporters were standing before a podium atop a platform. Behind that was an assembly line that remained still, for the time being. The main focus was on the small group of people at the podium, an older bearded man and numerous robots of varying designs beside him. The atmosphere appeared to be one of genuine excitement while the man, Dr. Light, smiled and waved to the reports, the robots following his lead.
“Today was the day when Dr. Thomas Light, head of Light Laboratories, announced that the mass production of robots designed for industrial work will begin. Dr. Light gave a tour of the facilities that would serve as the main factory for his robots, using several of them to highlight what they were capable of.”
A quick montage followed of the various robot designs and what they were capable of. From one wielding fire, another lifting up huge weights like they were nothing and another showing control of electricity, the abilities on display were indeed impressive. They worked under great stress and without any hesitation in their duties, a testament to their design and build. The camera then returned it focus to Dr. Light, who stood on the podium.
“Today is an auspicious day. Tasks that previously put people's lives at risk, or required immense resources, can now be done with a select group of robots that are able to withstand, even thrive, under extreme environmental conditions. With these robots going into mass production, then we will see them go into the world and beyond, aiding many outer world colonies and making them inhabitable for all.”
More shots were shown of the factory where production was set to start soon. The assembly line highlighted the complex machinery needed to get this all working and how much work was needed to build even one of the robots. Although it wasn't active, it was clear that it would take time and effort to build even more of Dr. Light's creations.
“Full mass production isn't scheduled to start until the beginning of next week, but with rumours over delays and potential sabotage, the announcement here was welcomed by many who had been waiting for any sign that Dr. Light would follow up on his promise that it would start. The press conference today has assured people that things should move on smoothly from here on out.”
The point appeared to be highlighted with Dr. Light and his robots in a group pose, all smiling and posing for the cameras that flashed and took numerous photos of them. It looked like it was going to be a particularly successful venture, providing no former research colleague of Dr. Light was going to manipulate events to try and take over the world in a day or two.
“With what many is heralding as a major step forward for mass use of robotics, it would appear that Light Laboratories could very well change the world and beyond. Kōji Jinnai, World 1287.”
Robin Miller greeted the audience once the view turned back to the studio with a slight nod. “In today's other stories:”
A video was shown of various suited men at a press conference. On display was wealth and false smiles while the large conference room was host to a very select group making an announcement.
“Umbrella Corporation of World 0396 completed its takeover of World 0701's Aesir Pharmaceuticals today, securing the stocks needed to acquire the company. The directors have promised that that shall continue to supply the high quality medicines that people have come to expect from them and that the merger will only strengthen their research capabilities.”
A different video was shown, this one of a much more humble looking crowd of people that surrounded a walked along a winding trail through a forest. They were carrying holy symbols and various icons as they went, giving it the feeling of a rather solemn event.
“In Wygol Village of World 0986, the yearly ceremony took place to celebrate the defeat of Dracula. Residents completed the usual walk around the village, calling upon the protection of the Belmont Clan throughout the year.”
A third video popped up, this time of an anthropomorphic fox with a police badge on her chest directing several policeman and crime scene investigators. They were in a museum with an exhibit centred around a rather splendid suit of armour.
“Notorious thief, Sly Cooper, attempted to steal the armour of legendary hero Sir Daniel Fortesque in World 1098 last night. The theft was thwarted by police, however, thanks to Interpol although Cooper managed to escape. Police are appealing for information.”
With the final short news piece out of the way, the camera returned to Robin who smiled professionally. “And that is it for our major news stories. For sport, let's go to Reporter.”
Reporter, who had been rather aptly named by her parents, greeted the camera turning to her with a bright smile. A brown-haired woman with a white shirt and pink tie, she managed to radiate professionalism mixed with enthusiasm. “Good evening to our viewers,” she started. “The Kanto Pokémon Championship in World 0296 is due to start this evening with the opening ceremony commencing in only one hour. After last year's huge upset with the victory of Red, this promises to be another exciting event. With more on the story, here's Kinsey.”
A huge stadium greeted the viewer when the recording started. A large podium had been erected in the middle with seats arranged on the top to make space for the Elite Four of Kanto and various other dignitaries. People rushed around the area, getting last minute arrangements finished and it looked to be going smoothly. In the middle of it stood Kinsey, microphone in hand and smiling warmly.
“Here I am in the middle of Indigo Plateau where last minute preparations are being finished before tonight's ceremony. Every Pokémon Trainer in Kanto who has won eight badges in the last year is going to be attending tonight and it promises to be a major competition. After last year's upset, everyone's excited to see what will happen this time.”
Footage of the previous year's tournament and Red's Blastoise knocking out the competition was shown. The shocking defeat of the Elite Four by the young competitor had rocked the pokémon world and the thought that it could happen again was making people more excited than ever. Could it happen twice in a row?
“Champion Red has already arrived at the arena and is waiting for the ceremony to start. Competitors from all over Kanto are hoping that this will be their year as well, that they can repeat the success that Red had. Starting from tomorrow, the brackets will be revealed and the fights will begin.”
Another shot was shown of Pokémon League Village, which was already filling up with Trainers and their pokémon. Many were talking amongst small groups and there was a look of determination about everyone that indicated that they wanted to be here and wanted to win. Not even the presence of the camera distracted anyone.
“Pokémon League Village is already full of those taking part in this year's tournament. Hopes and passions are high with many hoping to do what Red did and secure themselves a place in the history books. It remains to be seen if it will happen, but many are expecting an exciting tournament ahead.”
The focus then went back to Kinsey, who continued to stand in Indigo Plateau while activity surged around her.
“More eyes are on Kanto than ever thanks to last year's shock victory. The entire Pokémon world is excited about the outcome, whatever it maybe. Reporting from Indigo Plateau, this is Kinsey.”
With that, it was back to the studio where Reporter was waiting with a welcoming smile. “In a surprise announcement today, the Kingdom of Britannia of World 0681 has stated that it will allow several bouts of the World Warrior Tournament to take place there next year. This is a change of policy from the Kingdom as our fighting correspondent, Lenny Creston, reports.”
The archaic Kingdom of Britannia was shown in its full glory with the city of Jhelom in the bright daylight and a proclamation being read out that the World Warrior Tournament would take place in the city itself next year. From the reaction of the large crowd listening to the herald reading said proclamation, this was greeted with a good deal of enthusiasm. It was to Lenny Creston to explain why.
“The city of Jhelom has long been seen as the city of Valour, the place that creates and trains the finest fighters in all Britannia. Of all the country's great cities, it has been Jhelom that has been campaigning the longest to allow the tournament to be allowed to take place and it looks like it has gotten its wish.”
The herald reading the proclamation was then shown alongside Mayor Joseph of Jhelom and two representatives of the World Warrior Tournament, Edmond Honda and Sakura Kasugano. With them both being well known fighters, their presence brought out Britannia's own warriors that were eager for the tournament to come to World 0681. They mingled with the crowd and seemed quite at ease while Creston went on.
“While Edmond Honda and Sakura Kasugano, two fighters chosen to represent the World Warrior Tournament during its expansion across worlds, mingled with the crowds of Jhelom, surveyors from the tournament looked over potential locations for fights to take place with the city's tavern, the Bunk And Stool, the city's training field, and a nearby meadow where the Shrine of Valour can be seen in the distance being considered.”
Shots of the inside of the bustling tavern, where Sakura and Edmond were being treated to a hearty meal, were shown. Other shots included the training field where the warriors of Britannia were hard and work and the aforementioned meadow where the Shrine of Valour could be seen in the distance.
“Britannia's reluctance to allow outside influences in the nation has eased recently due to the increasing influence of the Avatar, who has helped Britannia through multiple crises. The most recent being a war against inhabitants of the Underworld, which the Avatar brought to a peaceful conclusion. Lord British has continued opening up Britannia to foreign powers and allowed a greater flow of information to pass between worlds, where previously Britannia had been isolationist.”
The camera then cut to Lenny Creston, who was standing in the training field and seemed almost distracted, like she wanted to get stuck into things herself with the whip at her side. She managed to resist this though and carried on while the warriors trained around her.
“Although the reigning champion of the World Warrior Tournament, Ryu, has yet to be confirmed if he'll be returning to defend his title, there is excitement throughout Britannia about the bouts taking place here. With other worlds eager to take part, it is believed that next year's World Warrior Tournament is going to dwarf the next one in sheer number of competitors and will be an event for the ages. Lenny Creston, World 0681.”
Back to Reporter in the studio and the woman quickly followed up with further news. “The Inter-World Baseball League saw numerous matches last night, with the Ninja Bats defeating the Drill Moglars handily.”
A quick rundown of the numerous baseball matches and their respective results were displayed, the usual suspects of successful teams from different worlds showing that they still had a stranglehold on the league. At least, for now anyway. Once that was done, the camera returned to Reporter.
“And that's the round up for the sports across the worlds. For further in-depth look, we have a single-world focus on where you are after the news. That's all from me. Back to Robin.”
Robin was shown one last time to close things out. “Thank you, Reporter. That's all from us tonight. We now go to a world-news focus where you are, including the weather and sports. From all us here at OBC News, thank you for watching and have a good evening.”
The camera than began to pan away from Robin and the news desk. The bombastic theme music was heard to close this episode of the evening news out, although it was never truly the end, with more stories sure to come the next day and all others afterwards.
