Work Text:

The day began like any other on the Thousand Sunny. Salt in the wind, sun on the deck, and the ever-present, maddening sound of bickering drifting from the galley to the rest of the ship.

"I’m just saying," Zoro drawled, reclining against the wall without care, "for all your fancy talk, that stew yesterday was… fine."

The word "fine" fell with the impact of a cannonball.

Sanji, beloved prince of pans and spatulas, froze mid-chop. A single carrot medallion, a fallen soldier, clattered to the floor. He turned, the light catching in his eyes, not unlike the glint of a whetted blade.

"Fine," he echoed, the word tasting of ash. "You insufferable moss-brained meathead- do you even know what goes into a proper stew? Or even a basic beef stew?"

Zoro tilted his head in mock thought. "Meat, water, something orange...?”

With the grace of a dancer and the wrath of a storm god, Sanji slammed his knife into the cutting board. "All right, you absolute disgrace to taste buds. If you're such a connoisseur, why don't you step behind the counter and make something yourself?"

There was a pause. A long, heavy silence. Then, like thunder rolling over the sea, Zoro grinned.

"Fine. Watch and learn."

It was a massacre.

Flour and other spices hung in the air as battlefield fog. A once-proud kitchen was now a war-torn arena. Broth lay splattered, puddles of gore streaked across the countertop. Peas slipped like treacherous enemies beneath Zoro’s boots. And yet, by some miracle, some divine fluke of fate, he persevered.

Sanji, perched on a stool as a reluctant judge, watched with narrowed eyes and twitching fingers, resisting the primal urge to intervene. The cleanup would be worse than when Luffy sneaks in at night for a snack.

Zoro chopped things too hard, seasoned with the subtlety of a cannon blast, and stirred as if the ladle were a sword. He moved with the raw, brash confidence of a man with no idea what he was doing, but determined to win.

And beneath the snark and steam, Sanji couldn’t help but watch. The way Zoro furrowed his brow at the stove like it was an opponent to conquer. The way his hands—scarred, steady—cradled the pot, surprisingly gentle.

It was doubtful that Zoro even had a recipe in mind. The way he wandered around and grabbed things seemingly at random (It was impressive he didn’t get lost when he walked all the way to the pantry). As if sensing his thoughts, Zoro looked up from his concoction and glared.

He glared right back.

Sanji took the opportunity to freely look at him. The way Zoro looked both in and out of his element at the same time. Muscles flexing freely in a tank top, sweat dripping down his skin in a way similar to hours of training, the way his ass looked-

Sanji gripped his cigarette and looked away, taking a deep puff to push those thoughts away.

At last, Zoro slammed a bowl in front of him. "Eat," he barked out with a scowl on his face.

Sanji stared. A... soup? A stew? A thing that vaguely resembled both. Vegetables and unevenly cut meat bobbed awkwardly. The aroma was surprisingly, and reluctantly, a little pleasant. Earthy, smoky, with a daring hint of cumin. His pride flinched. Did the moss head even know what cumin was?

Sanji took a spoonful.

He chewed.

Paused.

And then-

"It’s awful," he declared, far too quickly. "Bland. Overcooked. A crime against cuisine."

Zoro paused before he leaned in, arms folded, smirking with the smile of a man who’d just won a war.

"Then why are you still eating it?"

Sanji blinked. The bowl was… noticeably emptier than it had been mere seconds ago. His hand not fully cooperating with his brain. It wasn’t that it tasted amazing, no, but that Zoro made it. Burly, heavy-handed, snarky Zoro. He took the time and effort to craft a meal, even if it was to spite him.

"T-Testing it. For poison. You probably don’t even know how hot chicken needs to be to be safe, you idiot."

Zoro’s grin widened. “Sure, cook. Whatever you say.”

And there, in the kitchen that smelled of burnt garlic and stubborn pride, tension swirled between them. Neither spoke of the warmth that bloomed in their chests, the unspoken words hanging in the air.

Tomorrow, perhaps, they’d fight again. But tonight, Sanji scraped the last bite from the bowl, cheeks faintly pink, while Zoro watched with the quiet triumph of a man who’d finally learned the secret ingredient.

(Just a little salt... and a whole lot of heart.)
