Work Text:
You are Frisk. After freeing the monsters from the underground, you've lived with the ones who stayed near Mt. Ebott. (Some monsters leave to spread out more every year. It's sad seeing friends go, but they're always happy when you hear from them.)
You bought some farmland in a place called Pelican Town so it wouldn't get bought up by Joja. (Even if "soul-sucking" is metaphorical, it still sounds awful.) Part of the deal was to make some use of the land, farming or otherwise. You figure if it's nice out there and you don't like farming, you can invite someone else to move in.
You're a little surprised at just how overgrown everything is, but it's not like you'd let something like that stop you. Robin understood your sign, but she doesn't know if everyone else does. You decide you'll need to make tea more often than you do at home.
The mayor understands your sign too. He tells you not to get in over your head. You guess you still look pretty young.
You make sure to buy one or two of all the seeds from Pierre. He says he wouldn't mind if you bought more, but the crows will come if you grow everything at once. You'll have to figure out how to make a scarecrow.
You try to meet everyone like the mayor suggested. Most of the adults seem to recognize your sign, even if they can't read it as well as your family. Evelyn and George are confused by some of your signs, but they understand you well enough. Harvey and Elliot can't read much more than finger spelling, but Clint doesn't know any. Haley and Alex don't recognize it either. Abigail, Emily, and Sam do but don't know much (other than some swears from Abigail and Sam), but Sebastian, Maru, and Penny know at least enough for introductions. (Your throat is still sore by the end of the day.)
Linus is your favorite friend here so far. He knows a lot about the wild plants and fish in the area. You tell him if anyone starts throwing rocks at his tent, he can pitch it on the farm once you've cleared some more space. He says he likes his spot, but he'll keep that in mind. You tell him you like his spot too.
You don't have a full kitchen yet, so you can't try any of the recipes in the human cookbooks Toriel sent with you. The parsnips are healthy though, and you've figured out how to make a scarecrow. Getting everything planted takes the rest of the day, but it's satisfying work.
You know Vegetoid is more like a carrot, but you draw his face on one of the parsnips anyway. You miss your family.
The tiny green monster you saw in the community center disappeared when the mayor turned to face it. (He didn't recognize your sign for "monster" and said it was probably rats.) You follow it into one of the rooms and see a gold plaque with some weird writing on it. (It isn't the old monster language, your friend doesn't recognize it either. They appreciate being asked.)
The wizard recognizes your sign for monster, but says the Junimos aren't monsters. He tells you to drink a weird potion to understand them.
(You CHECK it before you drink it. "Forest Potion: Made with dirt and human magic. Tastes green." It does taste green.)
You can read the plaque when you go back to the community center. This human wizard is okay, maybe.
You're never going in the mines again. (Your friend was too scared to see if they had SOULs. You don't know what would be worse.) You don't call your family that night.
You are very excited when you get your house upgraded. It comes with a real kitchen. You want to see if you can make magic food with your crops.
You clear some more of the farm on a rainy day and ask Robin to start building a coop and a silo when she can. She's happy with your repeated business. She says your farm is doing well. (Your friend agrees with her.)
The Junimos don't understand your sign, but they have good hearing like the monsters do and don't mind your whisper. They don't know if they're monsters, but they're made of magic. You say you think that makes them monsters. They don't seem to care if you call them monsters. It makes you happy.
You're getting better at making food with magic in it, but it isn't monster food yet. It tastes good though.
You can't eat this many pies (maybe if they were monster pies, but not human pies) but maybe some people in town would like them.
Most of them are confused as to why they're getting pies with a slice taken out. You explain you're trying to make something for your family if they visit, but it isn't turning out right. You have to taste-test them, and you'll stop once you figure it out, but you don't need this many pies. You promise they taste good.
Most of them agree. Willy is skeptical that your snail pie really had snails in it.
Gunther gives you a rusty key he doesn't remember getting and you find a friend in the sewers. (You and your friend are glad you never went back into the mines.)
Krobus feels like home. He likes hearing about your family. You'll have to bring them down here to meet him.
You finally figure out how to make magic food with your crops. You share the pie with Krobus and the Junimos. (Your friend tries to argue against you giving a small piece to the wizard, but you think it's polite.)
You make two pies when Toriel is coming to visit. The magic snail pie was harder than the magic blackberry pie, but you didn't want to have her over without it. She gives you a big hug.
She knows most of what you've been doing from your phone calls, but you show her everything on the farm anyway. You hold hands the whole time.
The townsfolk eye her as you walk to the library. When Jas runs up and hugs her, and all Toriel does is hug back, everyone relaxes to carry on with their day. She settles in to read and you say you'll be right back with a surprise.
You eat outside. Toriel loves the pies. You're so happy you could burst.
You invite Krobus to come visit that night. Toriel is all too happy to meet your local monster friend. Krobus is happy to meet the family you talk so much about.
Your family starts visiting more often. You keep a magic pie or two in your fridge at all times. The townspeople get used to seeing monsters walk into town, asking where your farm is.
(Word eventually reaches the "monster slayers" near the mines about "monsters" visiting town. One of them comes down when Alphys is visiting. You pose with your scythe and roar the way Undyne taught you to. Mayor Lewis hears you and intervenes, apologizing. Alphys feels better after meeting Maru and Demetrius.)
You're happy you've been able to help the Junimos, but you're sad to see them go. They say they'll still visit, just not as often. They love your pies.
It's Friday, but Krobus lets you sit next to him quietly. You appreciate it.
