Work Text:

Stupid dog. Stupid stray. Stupid Gwi-Ma for burning up his gamtu as he died. Visibility sucked when he had hair like cotton candy.

The figures he's following stop before a cart, and he ducks behind bushes. He glares at the Hunter as she snuggles up against his bandmate and pecks him on the cheek. Gross.

His glaring and simmering's made to abruptly halt when he's rudely shoved to the ground. He rolls out of the way of the Hunter's gok-do and hisses as he stands and pushes her back.

"This is my spot!"

"This is my spot!"

"Find another! I scouted this place out yesterday!"

"Too bad, too slow, I got here first, you bi-!"

"Did you hear something?"

He ducked and held his breath. He glared as the other Hunter did the same in the shrubbery. The black-haired one glanced around, and the mutt did too, before stopping as he faced the bush. His eyes seemed to bore into him, despite the hair-

"Here!" the little Hunter chirped, holding up the freshly-scooped ice cream cone, and the mutt beamed and took a bite before she pulled him along to sit at a bench nearby.

He grumbled and tried to get to a more comfortable position, only to find a glowing speartip pointed at his throat. He glared at the Hunter. "Seriously?!"

"Why are you here?" she growled.

"I could ask you the same thing."

"I'm making sure that demon doesn't hurt Zoey!"

"Oh please, she killed him once!"

"And he could do the same-!"

"I wish-"

The Hunter glared and he did too, as the blade got closer.

"But he won't," he spits, "Because your Zoegirl got her claws in him somehow and now he's a stupid lovesick puppy!"

"Oh like he didn't do something to her-"

"Like we needed to? You guys have been oggling us since we showed up!"

Her eye twitched, his claws came out-

"O I !"

They both turned and saw a red-faced old man squinting through his tiny glasses as he waved shears at them both.

The Hunter quickly pulled him up and made him double over with a spear hilt to his gut. She had a hand on his back, keeping him in a ninety-degree bow as she walked backwards and dragged him along, apologizing about trying to find something that fell.

He glared but a commotion would only draw attention to-

The bench where the mutt and his Hunter were being all lovey-dovey was empty. Great.

He kicked the ground when he was released on his feet and resisted the urge to scream into the heavens. A few meters away, the old man muttered, "Darned kids canoodling in my shrubs. . ."

He made a retching sound and the Hunter did the same. They met each other's gaze through narrowed eyes.

"You don't want him with her-"

"-and you don't want her with him," she finished.

His fingers shifted against each other, curling and uncurling, until he offered her a hand. "Truce?"

"Fine," she said, but smacked away his hand.

"Know where they're headed?"

"The mall," she replied, turning to the towering structure. "Gonna hit the cute couple spots."

He wanted to barf at the thought of the sappy, cutesy sights to be had. "That Hunter's intuition?"

Her gaze turned distant and she shuddered, as though recollecting a war-torn sight.

"She's been rambling about it all week . . ."

He was suddenly, deeply glad for his bandmate being so quiet.

"There's the mutt-"

"You don't get to call him that."

She looked down from the binoculars, because of course she brought those, and returned to her watching. He followed her line of sight and found the offending Hunter looking around a frilly shop, now and then holding up little clothes for the flat furry doll-skin in the mutt's arms. "Bleugh. It's like they're making a kid."

"Do not give me that mental image-"

"Ah, only demon you want in your head is Abby, got it-"

He dodged her this time, and cackled at the pink dusting her cheeks. "Really? Still got a crush? Man, you're-"

"Oh shit, it is like their kid."

He turned where she was looking and cringed. Some fuzzy, lavender-colored creature was dressed like the Hunter with a hat and skirt. There seemed to be a bun on its wig.

"That Hunter better keep it."

"I do not want that thing lying around-"

"Fuck, there's two-"

"There's two?!"

There were two. At the counter, the mutt held a black-furred creature with shaggy bangs that reached its snout. It seemed to wear a sweater and arm warmers.

Before he could concuss himself on the metal banister, the Hunter beside him pulled him back. "They're heading to the theatre!"

He hoped it was for an action movie, but knew he hoped in vain.

Okay it wasn't a romance, but being a horror movie wasn't better when he remembered how humans tend to cling to each other in moments of fear.

The black-haired hunter wasn't afraid, but she leaned against his bandmate and he leaned back. Like a couple.

He angrily munched through his popcorn, glowering until a scream has him looking at the screen. He rolled his eyes.

"This shit ain't even scary."

"You guys' fault for being so ugly," retorted the Hunter beside him, sipping her soda.

He hummed. Phones should be off in the cinema, but he was a demon, who cared not for such rules.

"Hey Mira."

Her eyes glanced over to him and the screen that clearly showcased Abby's perfectly-sculpted, glimmering abs.

She punched him, but he couldn't dodge this time with the theatre seats' arm rests in the way, and his shout of pain was lost in the scream of movie-goers at the jumpscare of the slasher getting another victim.

He popped his jaw back by the time the movie ended.

The sickeningly sweet duo went to dinner, then a dessert place after. The lovebirds fed each other, of course.

The other Hunter groaned. "Why do they have to be so cute and happy?!"

He found himself wishing Zoey would hit the mutt, just to prove him right. He's sure Mira wouldn't mind if the girl got bit just a little, so they'd have reason to pull them away from each other. But nooooooo, they just had to be a perfect little pair of mushy motions and smiles the whole day long.

They stalked the couple through dimming streets, and if the two suspected being followed, they certainly didn't care, still displaying all the nastily saccharine acts they had before. They were such a picture perfect couple that it was only fitting, really, when his ears caught the sound of a picture being taken, and when he turned his head, there was a human hiding much less skillfully than he or Mira were, grinning at what must have been a photo of the pair. Sensing the stares, the human turned, and snapped a pic the demon knew was of himself and the pink-haired hunter before running.

He soundlessly met the Hunter's gaze, and they chased the photographer down.

He broke the man's camera, his lenses, his memory card, his phone, his phone's cards-

When the man reached for his glasses, a spear whizzed by, pinning it to the wall. He belatedly noticed the way a tiny light on its frame died out. The Hunter came back from blocking the street cams, and crushed them to bits beneath her heel with the other shards, just in case.

"You're monsters," the man breathed-

Mira made an offended sound while he just grinned, making sure the fangs showed.

"No one will ever believe you."

The couple capped their night off with some stargazing.

Behind wilder bushes no old man would probably kick them out of, he crouched shoulder to shoulder with Mira. The other Hunter pointed at a star, and the mutt smiled down at her.

"They look happy," he grumbled.

"Unfortunately."

He didn't know how long they stayed there, but he went through all the snacks and drinks he nabbed from the convenience store they stopped at and the Hunter finished hers too. She scolded him to throw his trash proper and he tucked them away into the plastic bag, just so she wouldn't nag so loud.

Eventually, the couple left towards the station. He stood up and stretched his legs. "I still don't like this."

"Same."

"And I still hate you."

"Same."

They looked the way the couple went, their silhouettes still linked as they walked down the hill's steps.

"If he hurts her," Mira said, "I'll put him in the ground."

He nodded. "Same."

She offered her hand.

He stared at it, shook it, and they went their separate ways.
