Chapter Text
Dorothy didn’t know how things got out of control. It was another day of helping her town rebuild after the twister and con artist masquerading as a safety investigator. The next she lost her aunt and uncle to a drunk driver and the bank was taking her family’s farm.
She held Toto close as they looked at the stars in the field close to where they grew up. Neither knew who would take them in, if anyone would take them in.
Dorothy and Toto thought of Oz again. Of their friends that felt more like family than the girl’s biological relatives who were hesitant about taking her in. Of the magical land that took her seriously and cared about her.
Dorothy sighed softly as she realized what she was about to do. She hadn’t wished on stars since she was six and hoped that her mom would get better. But she knew magic existed now so maybe she could…

It was quiet in the palace of Emerald City where everyone should be celebrating Dorothy Gale defeating the Jester. But now filled with somber silence, the occasional weeping could be heard, but everyone avoided the palace as much as they could. It all started after sending Dorothy home, Glinda showed the girl’s friends how they could see how she was doing.
Each got to see how Dorothy’s life went into shambles and Glinda watched as they planned to bring the girl and her dog home. She watched as they tirelessly fixed the Rainbow Mover, keeping an eye on Dorothy and Toto. Glinda saw the girl watching the stars in a field, if the good witch’s hunch was right then Dorothy and Toto were about to wish on a star.
“How are they doing?”
Glinda looked over at Lion and blinked in confusion that he was alone. Usually Tin Man was with him whenever the King of the Forest came to check on the duo from Kansas, Scarecrow stopped coming in after the sixth relative refused to take Dorothy in. He glanced at the orbs with anticipation of another tragedy being thrown at Dorothy.
“Is the Rainbow Mover fixed?” Glinda asked. When Lion nodded she handed an orb to the big feline, “Take this one back to the others.”
Glinda watched fear flashed across Lion’s eyes before he gently took it and walked back to the other room. She looked out across Oz with an actual smile on her face.
Tin Man was the first to see Lion with an orb, trying to use his body to hide it from Scarecrow. Unfortunately Scarecrow noticed him too, groaning inwardly. His eyes refused to leave the machine.
“Is it that bad?” Tin Man whispered, glancing over at his shoulder to Scarecrow. Seeing that his husband was clutching one of the handles so tightly that he was worried that it would break.
“I don’t know,” Lion answered, “I asked Glinda how they were and she just asked if the machine was fixed then handed this to me when I said it was.”
Scarecrow glanced at the orb as Lion brought it closer so they all could look. They watched Dorothy stare up at the stars with such sorrowful eyes.
Then they all heard it.

“I wish we can stay in Oz permanently,” Dorothy said softly, hugging Toto close to her chest.
‘Can anyone hear us?’ Dorothy thought. ‘From Oz? In the Emerald City?’
The girl started to stand up, brushing herself off and grabbing the backpack that contained all of her things, when Toto started barking excitedly. Dorothy glanced up as a rainbow moved quickly towards her through the night. She pulled Toto and her backpack closer to her as the rainbow grabbed them.
Dorothy felt relief flooding through her chest as she slid through the rainbow, giggling as the rainbow moved quickly. Toto was barking some more as they flew over a river.
Dorothy braced herself and Toto for the drop as they flew above the Emerald City. Their landing was more gentle this time around as Dorothy landed onto the railing of a balcony to the palace. Glinda was there with her hand extended to help the girl down.
“They’re in the Wizard’s chambers,” Glinda stated, “I will inform your other friends of your return.”
That was all Toto needed to hear as he jumped out of Dorothy’s arms and booked it down the emerald halls. With Dorothy right on her dog’s heels.
