Work Text:
They sat leaning against a desk, quiet as they typically are.
A glass of whiskey rested beside them. Gene shifted as he snatched the glass and downed it all in one quick gulp. There Sam was settled next to him staring intently at a buzzing radio, as if a voice from the future was going to suddenly break through.
Gene laid down the glass and turned his head to Sam's direction. He knew the Guv was watching him, yet he remained busy on the radio.
Gene slid closer, and Sam took a glance over at the man and noticed his attention was turned down, head focused at his collar.
Sam tried to figure out, curiously, for a moment on what could possibly catch Gene's interest before he reached for the medal necklace around Sam's neck, wresting it on his hand to further inspect it.
He leaned his head closer, “You always wear this. Don't think I've ever seen ya without it.” pulling it closer.
“Well, you noticed,”
“What is it, ey?” running his thumb over the shiny piece.
“Saint Christopher medal.” he peered down at Gene who was examining it in his hand.
“It’s always gotta be some’ fancy thing with you,” he sneered.
Sam huffed, when had it ever been ‘fancy’.
“Where'd ya get it? Gotta be somethin’ special, right?”
Special.
It really never was anything special, nothing significant. It appeared alongside his clothes when he woke up in the strange world of 73’. It didn't mean much to him— though he'd always kept it, just like the leather jacket he always wore.
“I don't know,” Sam replied after a moment of thought.
“It just… showed up on its own.”
It wasn't worth anything enough to keep— yet, it also felt too important to just throw away.
Gene chuckled, releasing the medal from his clasp.
“Yeah, right.” he scoffed, straightening up.
Sam wasn't sure why he kept it. Maybe to remember the day he found himself here, maybe as some accessory— or perhaps even for protection from the saint. Who knows? He thought he might figure out the reason another day.
