So I'm a free-range superhero (35M) specializing in looking out for my community. There's a local vigilante (?M) who I'll call Frog Hop who doesn't believe in business opportunities who's been getting in my way a lot. I think it'd be safe to say that he's my nemesis. Last night there was an important shipment that he got in the way of at the last minute (he has these carrot-themed bombs that cause so much fucking noise and light, I hate them) and when the smoke cleared it turned out that he'd ruined the perfectly legitimate business opportunity and he was there kind of like what are you gonna do. So obviously I told him that he'd ruined my plans for the last fucking time and kind of went after him with my claws and wings. Which I thought was fine, he'd gotten in my way one too many times, right?

But anyways, when I was talking to my friend T (32M) at our coffee meetup this morning the fight was on the news and he said that maybe the hero had taken things too seriously, and the vigilante saw this more as a fun rivalry they had and didn't mean to really hurt the hero.

AITA?

So I'm a free-range superhero (35M) specializing in looking out for my community. I felt worse about it because my friend T had actually been fucking mugged last night (he’s fine, I'm going to find who did it and make them pay) and seeing him with a broken nose and hurt arm made me think about how Frog Hop was feeling. He’s never injured me, just caused me business ruin, but you know, I dohave a lot of money anyways. Maybe I went too far? I said that maybe the hero had lost a lot of money, and T wasn't taking that into account, but T seemed to think that wasn't as important as the rivalry relationship. He was pretty sad about things too, and he didn't even cheer up when I bought him a candied carrot brownie and told him I was going to make his muggers pay.

So, was I the asshole for fighting my nemesis full-out?

I think your friend T raises some good points. If your nemesis hadn’t gone for physical harm before, this might represent an escalation he wasn’t ready for, which would make you a bit of an asshole, sad to say. INFO: Do you think any injuries you left on your nemesis would be serious/lasting, or more the sort of thing he could just walk off?

Well, he was still walking, but I think I might have broken his nose and his arm was kinda fucked. When it happened I just thought that would stop him from blocking my business plans, but like, T was having trouble drinking his latte, and that made me think. What if Frog Hop can’t eat his cereal? He has to be able to have the same cereal for breakfast every day, he’s mentioned. Should I send more cereal to say sorry? I think he said he liked Cheerios with grated carrots.

I checked the police scanner (I'm a hero, don’t worry about it), and there’s no record of a mugging last night. There’s only the docks fight a villain and a vigilante were involved in. ESH

Don’t worry, I talked to Frog Hop, and we’re all good again. I apologized for going too far, but it turns out that his biggest concern was that we weren’t friends any more, and we cleared that up! I would never stop being friends with a valued nemesis like him. Unrelatedly, I also talked to T, and we’re going to start a couple projects together.

I have to apologize to the Crowfather for calling him stupid. It has been brought to my attention that anyone could know someone in one persona but not recognize them in another, especially in cases where combat and masks were involved, and honest mistakes could be made. Even, perhaps, employing your own cousin as a sidekick, to use a hypothetical instance! Easy mistake, anyone could have done it. I take back what I said about the Crowfather. NAH.
