Chapter Text
The dim rays of the morning sun broke over the thick walls of Oakhurst, banishing back the red light of the blood-moon. How they did it was difficult to say, considering the mournful fog that rolled in with them. The shine of the morning dew caught by the sun only served to make the whole town feel colder and the fact that the humans of Oakhurst had come to find this ominous light a comfort was truly a testament to what humanity could adjust to when faced with a worse alternative…
…and the whole thing was the perfect setting for a romantic scene in his next novel!
The dramatic scenery wasn’t the only reason Sausage was charging through the streets of Oakhurst at sunrise though, he was inspired! He had a great idea for his story and there was only one person who could help him!
“Doctor!” Sausage shouted, throwing open the door to Legundo’s house. There was a flurry of movement as he did, Legundo—who was still laying in bed—jumped, the sheets went flying as his limbs flailed about. For a brief moment Sausage thought he saw a second figure in the bed, but he must’ve hallucinated because it was gone before he blinked.
“Wh- Sausage?” Legundo croaked, his voice thick with sleep.
“Yes! Doctor, I need-” Sausage declared, walking dramatically through the front door.
“Sausage! Wait-” Legundo put out a hand, before pausing in confusion as he looked around his bed.
“Don’t worry! I don’t mind if you’re naked!”
“No- that’s not- Nevermind, just come in,” Legundo sighed, stepping out of bed with clothes intact.
Someday Sausage would see a naked vampire.
“Thank you, I need help! Something only you can do!” Sausage said, turning away forcefully.
“What happened? Is someone hurt?!” Legundo asked, the way he crossed the room reminded Sausage of an injured gazelle tripping its way through a meadow.
“No injuries, just…” Sausage paused for dramatic effect, “inspiration!”
“What?” Legundo stumbled to a halt, turning to stare at Sausage in disbelief.
“For my next book! You’re the only one I can turn to!”
“You woke me up, caused all this panic… because you need advice for a book?”
“Yes! I need realism, and who better to help me than a vampire who is also a doctor!”
“I’m barely a vampire,” Legundo said, looking down uncomfortably. “I didn’t get any special information when I was turned. You’d be better off asking Cleo or Apo, they’ve been at this longer.”
“But you’ve got a special perspective on this, knowing all the medical stuff!” Sausage begged. He also neglected to mention that Cleo had threatened to stab him if he asked again, and Apo had outright said no.
“I mean, maybe…” Legundo said reluctantly, “but medical training and vampirism really don’t have much of an overlap. Are you sure this can’t wait?”
“You don’t understand inspiration Doc! I have to act now or else it’ll fly away like one of those vampire bats!”
“I’m sorry Sausage, but there isn’t much I can do…” Legundo said, walking over to what looked to be his robes lying on the table. He continued to speak, but Sausage slowly tuned out his protests, instead taking the opportunity to get a glimpse at a real vampire’s abode.
Legundo’s home was pretty disappointing by vampire standards, aside from most of the windows being shuddered it just looked like any other house. He didn’t have a coffin, or a wine rack of blood, or even a cape… maybe Sausage should’ve just gone and found Scott. If only his memories of the castle weren’t tainted by adrenaline. That would’ve been a fountain of knowledge and inspiration!
Just as Sausage was about to give up on Legundo entirely, he saw something odd in the doctor’s bed. Amongst the rough sheets there was a dark brown blob, sticking out from under a blanket. At first he thought it was just some mud or a sock, but no- that texture, the shape… that was a wing!
“Are you even-” Legundo tied the last of his robes, turning to Sausage in exasperation right as Sausage darted across the room to where the bed was. “Wait!” Legundo shouted after him, the exhaustion gone from his voice.
Legundo said it far too late, not that Sausage was likely to listen either way, the moment Sausage reached the bed he threw back the sheets and was greeted by the sight of a curled up bat. He didn’t waste a moment in grabbing the startled creature and bringing it up for inspection, this was the exact type of thing he was looking for!
“Sausage, I can explain-” Legundo said quickly, running up behind Sausage.
“A pet bat!” Sausage said triumphantly, finally he had more information on how real vampires behaved!
“Wh-”
“It’s so cute,” Sausage said, raising up the little creature to pet its little head. The way it glared at him, he wondered if pet bats had more intelligence than wild ones.
“Don’t pet him!” Legundo reached forward, carefully grabbing the bat from Sausage’s hands.
“So, vampires are possessive over their pets!” Sausage gasped, “or is he a Familiar?”
“What? No, Sausage-”
“Of course! You can control bats!” Sausage threw up his hands in joy, it made perfect sense! That was how those swarms appeared when the vampires transformed.
“I…” Legundo sighed, looking down at the bat in his hand for a moment before taking a deep breath. “Yes, I have a pet bat.”
“That’s amazing! Can I get one?”
“It’s a vampire thing,” Legundo said, “and no I’m not going to turn you!”
“Aww,” Sausage pouted, “at least tell me how you got him.”
“I honestly don’t know,” Legundo's eyes lingered on the bat, almost lovingly. “He just took a liking to me.” The bat gently rested its head on his fingers in response.
“So bats just like Vampires then,” Sausage whipped out a notebook, frantically taking notes.
“Well, I don’t know about every bat and every vampire…” Legundo chuckled weakly, looking at Sausage in concern.
“I was right then, in Twilight, vampires have different abilities!”
“I wouldn’t go that far...”
“Thank you doctor!” Sausage shut his book, reaching out and grabbing Legundo’s free hand to shake aggressively. “You’ve really been such a good help!”
“I don’t think you should take all this to heart, I’m really not-” Legundo eyed Sausage’s notes warily.
“I don’t need to know everything, don’t worry, just a few little facts to spice things up! This is going to be the most accurate vampire book ever,” Sausage took his hand back and patted the bat one more time for the road, “goodbye doctor!”
“Sausage-” Legundo muttered, but he was already out the door before Legundo could finish his sentence.
Between all of that and his conversation with Scott, he finally had some real facts about vampires. No one would be able to doubt the truth and quality of his books now! He had to get back home, to use this inspiration while he had it!
During his frantic charge back, his thoughts and run were interrupted by a familiar voice.
“Sausage?” Martyn asked, from where he was sitting by the fountain.
“Martyn!” Sausage said excitedly, coming to a sudden halt as he spotted his friend and fellow militia member.
“Why are you running around this early?”
“I got inspired!” Sausage rushed over to where Martyn was, “and you’d never believe what I just learned!”
