t's 10:15 PM on Christmas eve when the doors close on a bus leading to a nowhere village in Japan. It's snowing, but its beauty is lost to the two lonesome passengers in the back row. There's no one else other than them and the driver, and no stops inbetween.
The driver pays no mind to the two mismatch boys in the back, not questioning the lack of baggage the older one brought, and the age of the younger one. Satoru sure he just assumed they missed the prior bus, or that maybe he was simply going back home.
He wasn’t – the outskirts of Tokyo was supposed to be his home. It isn’t anymore and after tonight he’ll never see it again. After all – he won’t be alive to see the next sunrise.
