Chapter Text
The dim morning light shined through Chuuya’s curtains on a rainy Friday morning. It was peaceful, until the blaring sound of an alarm clock went off on Chuuya’s clean nightstand. He groaned and rolled over to turn it off, then proceeded to get dressed for school.
Chuuya threw on a black long-sleeve shirt, sweater, and sweatpants, slid on his beat up black converse, and walked out the door with his school bag. The cold winter air blew on his face as he walked a couple blocks down to wait for the bus.
He put his headphones on to blast music since he didn’t really care to converse with anyone at the moment, unless it was a certain person. The bus pulled up and Chuuya went straight to the back of the crowded bus full of people from school.
“God, it’s too early for this. Can’t the weekend just start already?” He thought as he waited for the bus to start moving again.
Chuuya closed his eyes and leaned his head against the window for a few minutes, before being interrupted by a thump next to him.
Startled, he opened his eyes and saw a smiling boy with messy brown hair sitting next to him. Chuuya held back a smile as he pulled off his headphones to greet his best friend since childhood.
“Hey, Dazai.” he yawned while adjusting to sit up straight.
“Jeez you seem tired. Did you stay up all night playing video games again?” Dazai asked in a teasing tone.
“No, you stupid mackerel, I just couldn’t sleep.” Chuuya rolled his eyes. He leaned against the window and pulled his legs up.
It was true, he didn’t get much sleep last night due to his crippling anxiety and intrusive thoughts. He always felt as if his mind wasn’t his and was being controlled by an outside force. He eventually got used to being tired at school everyday.
“You know, dogs need their beauty rest or else they-” Dazai started, mocking Chuuya with a shit eating grin on his face.
“Oh, shut up!” Chuuya lightly shoved Dazai, feigning annoyance. “When’ll you ever stop harassing me about this stupid dog thing?”
“Hmmm…” Dazai tapped his chin in thought for a moment. “Never. You remember that bet you lost! Now you’re my dog for life.” Dazai smiled.
Chuuya glared at Dazai as he spoke, and rolled his eyes, saying nothing.
“Come on Chuuuuyaaa! You know you love meeeee!” Dazai leaned forward and tried to hug Chuuya teasingly, but Chuuya just pushed him away.
“Stupid mackerel…” He said while turning to look out the window.
The small raindrops on the cold glass added to gloomy vibe winter gave off. Chuuya turned to look at Dazai to study his face. His lips were red due to him chewing on them constantly, which was a contrast to his pale skin and dark brown hair. Dazai had his eyes closed and he rested his head against the bus seat.
The bus suddenly came to a stop and people started standing up to go to class. Both got off the bus and started walking to the main school building. They got into the warm main hall and went to their lockers that were, coincidentally, right beside each other.
“See you 2nd period?” Chuuya asks, more making a statement though.
“For sure. Bye byeee!” Dazai headed off in the opposite direction of Chuuya.
-----------
2nd period finally came, and Chuuya practically bounced off to his next class. Art was Chuuya’s favorite subject ever. He loved the class, mostly because he got to talk to Dazai all period, but also because he was extremely talented in it.
Chuuya walked over to the table where him and Dazai usually sit alone since their other friends are either in other classes or different grades. Dazai was already sitting down at the table with his computer out.
Chuuya dropped his school bag onto the ground beside the chair he sat in. They didn’t have really anything to work on since the week after next were exams, so Chuuya took out his computer to listen to music while talking to Dazai.
While he was taking his earbuds out his bag, Dazai looked up and spoke.
“Hey, wanna hang over at mine after school? My mom’s gonna be out at some party till tomorrow night, and you can go home whenever you’d like.” He said trying to convince Chuuya to go over.
Chuuya shrugged when he sat up again and thought about if he was doing this weekend. Nothing.
“Sure!” Chuuya brightened up a little.
His day started off a little dreary, but it was always Dazai that seemed to make his day better.
“Sweet, okay!” Dazai smiled and started to talk about whatever came to his mind.
For the longest time, Dazai was always the one talking, and Chuuya was the one listening when they had conversations. They laughed and talked for an hour straight until the bell rang, signaling for them to head off to their next classes.
“Darn it.” Dazai groaned.
“Can you at least give me a big smooch before we part ways?” he leaned, making a kissy face and closing his eyes, but Chuuya pushed his face back while smiling.
“Ew, you are actually disgusting! And, for the record, we literally have English together next.” Chuuya laughed, grabbing Dazai’s hand and started walking out the class.
They made their way through the crowded hallways, hand in hand. Dazai let Chuuya pull him aimlessly to their next class.
-----------
After the bell rang, Dazai immediately went over to Chuuya’s desk already packed up.
“Wanna skip? We can go straight to mine.” Dazai leaned his hands on the ends of Chuuya’s desk while he packed up.
“Yes please, I desperately need to get out of this hell hole.” Chuuya zipped his bag up and stood up.
“Kay then, I don’t think anyone’ll notice if we’re gone anyways.” Dazai said as they walked out of the classroom and down the hallways.
They made their way outside and to the gate before a yell came from behind them. Their heads both looked behind them and saw a security guard walking towards them fast.
“Shit, go go go!” Chuuya yelled, and they both took off running, out the door in the gate, and down the street.
Once they were far enough, they both paused, breathing heavy, the cold air making them cough a little. They looked at each other and started bursting out in laughter.
“Holy fuck, that scared the crap outta me...!” Chuuya said breathless.
Dazai just kept laughing for a moment and then spoke in a wheezy voice.
“Wanna go to the gas station for Icees before going to mine?”
“Yeah! Last one there has to pay!” Chuuya said and then took off running again.
Chuuya was always more athletic and faster than Dazai since they were children. So, it was pretty clear Dazai was going to end up paying.
“Hey! Wait up asshole!” Dazai yelled and then started running again.
-----------
Chuuya and Dazai happily sipped on their Icees as they walked to Dazai’s house. It was only noon, so they still had a lot of time. A cold breeze blew and Dazai shivered, only having a thin dark brown cotton sweater, sweatpants, and band t-shirt on.
“Cold?” Chuuya asked him, kicking a rick on the sidewalk.
“No…” he mumbled and crossed his arms. Chuuya looked over and raised his eyebrows.
“…yes” Dazai eventually said and sighed.
“Well, that’s why you wear heavier clothes in the middle of winter.” Chuuya said exasperatedly as he took off his sweater and pushed it against Dazai’s chest, leaving his own arms bare.
“Chuuya-” Dazai started, about to refuse.
“Just take it. You’re gonna get sick if you don’t, and we’re almost home anyway.” Chuuya crossed his arms and looked away, his face slightly warm.
Dazai reluctantly put it on and mumbled a ‘thank you.’
They walked for a few more minutes in silence, finally reaching Dazai’s house. They both ran to the front door and inside to escape the cold, harsh winter outside.
This was gonna be interesting.

Chapter Text
Dazai’s house has always given off a cold and ominous vibe. As soon as Chuuya stepped through the doorway, his chest tightened slightly. He pushed down the growing anxiety he felt and followed Dazai up the stairs.
Dazai’s room was different from the rest of the empty house, it was comforting and cozy. He loved hanging out with Dazai, one of the reasons was because he was alone at home all the time. Ever since Chuuya could remember, both his parents were absent whether it be emotionally or physically.
They both worked in healthcare and were on call or at work all day. He barely got to see his parents, and it got extremely lonely, but he started getting used to it after a few years. Chuuya was planning on inviting Dazai over on Christmas because he knew his home life was pretty rough too.
Dazai never told him the details though, just that it was ‘hella boring’ in his words. Chuuya knew Dazai was just trying to pretend everything was okay when it truly wasn’t. He worried for Dazai, a lot.
Dazai dropped his bag at the end of his bed, and so did Chuuya. Dazai flopped onto his bed face first and groaned into his mattress. Chuuya let out an amused huff and laid next to Dazai on his back.
“Tired?” Chuuya said glancing over at Dazai.
Dazai rolled over a little to rest his head on his arm. He looked over at Chuuya with a slightly tired expression and spoke softly.
“Eh, kinda. I’m just really not looking forward to exams next week y’know?”
“Yeah, same. But I mean it’s only 2 more weeks till we get off for break, so that’s nice.”
Dazai sighed and Chuuya rolled over onto his side to fully look at Dazai. When he did, he glanced over across the room at the guitar propped up by Dazai’s desk. A great idea popped into his head and he smiled smugly.
“What are you smiling at?” Dazai said confused.
“Oh nothing. I was just thing about how I haven’t heard you play in sooooo long.” Chuuya said in a fake sad tone.
Dazai squinted his eyes a little while he looked at Chuuya’s ‘sad’ expression.
“I know what your doing, and I don’t want to, buddy.” Dazai said.
“Come onnnnnnnnnn. Pleaseeeeee. It’s been so long.” Chuuya sat up and crossed his legs.
Dazai contemplated for a minute and then he closed his eyes and sighed.
“Fine. But just because you’re my one, and only dog whom I guess I should treat once in a while.” Dazai teased and Chuuya rolled his eyes, but his annoyance quickly faded once Dazai got up.
He walked over to the guitar and put the strap over his head. He went back over, then sat at the edge of his bed and crossed his legs, beginning to tune it.
“Just gimme a sec, I need to tune it.” Dazai said, and Chuuya could hear the nervousness in his voice.
A few moments passed, and Dazai tossed the tuner on the bed next to him. He looked at Chuuya and quickly looked back down, letting out a shaky breath. He began playing and Chuuya felt as if everything around them went quiet.
He watched Dazai’s fingers slide across the fretboard, and his focused face. He was subconsciously chewing on his bottom lip as he concentrated on playing, and Chuuya’s stomach flipped. Chuuya was mesmerized, to put it lightly.
Dazai finished after a few minutes and looked back up and Chuuya's mesmerized expression. Chuuya didn't even notice Dazai finished, but he got brought back to reality when Dazai spoke to him.
“You’re staring.” Dazai said with his cheeks pink, fidgeting.
“…oh!” Chuuya mentally slapped himself and continued.
“No sorry, that was uhm… that was really pretty.” He stuttered but said with sincerity. He didn’t really know how to play that off.
“Oh, really…? Thanks…” Dazai mumbled as he got up quickly to put his guitar back, trying to hide his red face.
Dazai walked back over to the bed and laid down, resting his head on a throw pillow. Chuuya did the same, and they eventually started talking about whatever came to mind for hours.
Eventually, the sun went down, and the blanket of darkness that was night covered the city. The stars came out, and Dazai looked away from whatever movie him and Chuuya were watching to look out the window. He thought for a bit before looking over to Chuuya, taking a breath and asking.
“Hey, do you wanna go on my roof and like uhh… yap and stuff?” he asked and then started chewing on his lip again. Chuuya faintly smiled and paused the movie.
“Sure, if you want to.”
Chuuya got up and waited for Dazai to open the large window. A cold, gentle breeze hit Dazai’s face once he opened it and stepped onto the (not so steep) roof. Chuuya did the same, then shut the window, leaving it open just a bit. He sat beside Dazai, who was lying down looking at the night sky, and brought his knees to his chest.
“Did you know that black holes aren’t really holes?” Dazai spoke suddenly.
“Huh?” Chuuya said confused, looking over at him.
Dazai kept looking at the sky in awe before continuing.
“Yeah, they’re just really big concentrations of matter packed together. Kinda like a vacuum of a sort. Oh! And did you know that there’s actually a black hole at the very center of the Milky Way?” Dazai continued to go on about whatever facts he recalled with enthusiasm.
Chuuya listened, not interrupting once while Dazai kept talking. He loved listening to Dazai talk about his interests, mostly because he enjoyed seeing Dazai look so happy talking about it. Chuuya watched Dazai continue, he could listen to him talk about space, or whatever forever, never getting bored.
“I’d love to go there one day...” Dazai sighed and his expression changed a little. “Leave the world behind and just… be up there without any stress or anything…”
“Yeah…” Chuuya said, the gentle breeze making him shiver a bit.
Dazai gently took Chuuya’s hand and rubbed his thumb against it, making Chuuya get goosebumps all over him.
“It’s just the wind. Yeah… Jeez what's up with me?” He questioned, looking over at a seemingly unaffected Dazai.
After a few minutes of staying like that, Chuuya’s phone buzzed. Dazai quickly let go and sat up not saying anything. Chuuya checked his phone and saw a message from his mother asking him to be home soon.
“Shit, I should be getting home soon before mom lectures me.” Chuuya said while getting up to climb back inside, looking over at unmoving Dazai.
“You coming back inside or…?” Chuuya dragged out.
“Nah, I’ll stay out here for a little bit longer. I’ll see you on Monday though…” Dazai said, sounding a little down.
“Oh, alright” Chuuya climbed back inside and spoke once more. “You sure you’re alright?” he asked, concern evident in his voice.
“Yep! I’m all good! Anyways… bye bye Chuuuyaaa!” Dazai’s attitude flipped instantly. It was like he caught himself and attempted to act like he was fine.
“Okay well… See ya at school…” Chuuya grabbed his bag and waved back at Dazai, then exiting his room and eventually leaving his house, and walking home.
